From Football to Needlecraft

I got some great comments on my earlier Cary Grant knitting blog post that suggested I highlight one of the great professional football players, Rosey Grier. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Rosey, he was three times All Pro and played for both the New York Giants and the Los Angeles Rams. Grier was also apart of the “Fearsome Foursome” which is one of the greatest defensive lines in the sport’s history.
Not only is he an athlete, he is known for his needlepoint and has always been associated with that image. Rosey even wrote a book call Rosey Grier’s Needlepoint for Men which consists of projects which are all geared toward men. Although he doesn’t knit or crochet this shows how even a professional football player can be involved in needlecraft. I hope you all find this inspiring.

I am so impressed with men who are willing to share what is traditionally thought of as “woman’s hobbies”. My husband, in fact is very talented and he does floral arranging, not professionally, and also counted cross stitch and plastic canvas and rug hooking. I can’t convince him to try knitting or crochet though!

When I was growing up my dad did some simple needlepoint and did latch-hook rugs. He often pointed to Rosey Grier as his inspiration.

I remember when Rosey was playing football and read a piece about his needlepoint. It inspired me to try needlepoint too. I did several pieces but my first love was still knitting. I have often wondered what happened to him after he left football. I’ll be he is still doing needlepoint.

That is so cool. I once found a picture of Jane Powell trying to teach Frank Sinatra how to knit. It was pretty funny.

A story in our family says that my cousin got to sit across the aisle of an airplane from Rosey Grier. She said he worked on his needlepoint the whole trip from CA to PA.

As a woman I can and have re-wired whole rooms in my house, changed the oil in my car, fixed the plumbing in the bathroom and sanded and finished hardwood floors among many other supposedly masculine skills with no fear of being labeled. It’s a shame that so many men are so afraid of labels they won’t try these “womanly” skills. Thank God for Rosey and other men who are self-confident. The others don’t know what they are missing.

Watch some of the MASH TV show reruns. Alan Alda is knitting in some of them when he’s in the Swamp. He actually knits, not just holds the needles and yarn.
