I just taught a group of ladies to knit in a 10-week evening course at our church. We have kept going as a knitting club, meeting once a week at a different park and setting up our lawnchairs for the afternoon. Recently I found out about a group of volunteers from another church who will be going to Uganda next August, 2011. They presented a slide show about how people can get involved to support them. When I mentioned our knitting group to them, they asked if we could make baby blankets for the orphanage they will be going to. So this group of new knitters has taken on the challenge of knitting 100 baby blankets by next summer! Needless to say, I'm very thrilled and proud of them!

I taught myself to knit from several books and by watching Knitty Gritty on the DIY channel. I was working third shift at a local answering service when a couple of girls wanted to learn to knit or crochet, which I have been doing since I was about three years old. I taught them and it turned into a major session as several others knew other techniques and taught me. It was a great deal of fun. I also taught another friend of mine to knit who has went on to have the prettiest stitches I've ever seen!

When my dad was traction in a Veteran's hospital, having been wounded while in the Navy in Korea, a nurse taught him to knit to pass the time.
With donated yarn, he knitted a nice shawl for his young wife (my mom).
Somewhere we have a picture of him flat on his back, leg extended by cables and weights, with knitting needles held high.
Even years later, whenever he tried to knit, he had to lie down on the couch and hold his work up in front of his face to keep going on it.
I hadn't thought about that in quite awhile :)
