How to Crochet a Button

One of my favorite parts of yarncrafting is selecting the perfect button, but sometimes I just can’t find one that matches. The perfect solution is to crochet your own buttons! All you need is a small amount of yarn, a crochet hook (the yarn’s recommended size or smaller for a tighter button), and a blunt-eyed needle. Here’s how to do it.

How to Crochet a Button

Step 1: Make a slipknot and chain 2.
Step 2: Work 6 single crochet in 2nd chain from hook. Join with slip stitch in first single crochet. (6 stitches total.)
Step 3: Chain 1. Work 2 single crochets in each stitch around. Join with slip stitch in first single crochet. (12 stitches total.)
Step 4: Chain 1. Single crochet 2 together 6 times. Join with slip stitch in first single crochet. (6 stitches total.
Step 5: Weave tail through remaining stitches. Flatten button slightly and stitch through all thicknesses to secure.

With those easy steps, you’ll be able to crochet buttons that will always match your finished projects. Happy crocheting!

  • When I need a button with substance, like for a coat, I crochet using a stainless steel washer as the base from the hardware store.

    • Great idea, Zom! Washers or even old buttons give additional strength to a crocheted button.

  • I’ve always used a “bone” ring (now plastic) of the appropriate size to crochet the last round around. It adds the firmness of a button without extra weight. One of the tricks I’ve learned after 50 years of being the family knit-wit.

    • Atta boy, Randy!   These ‘bone’ rings have made many a sweater of mine look fabulous!
      The LB version, without an inner support, are fine, but get fuzzy after a while, and do not
      keep a sweater buttoned, but the rings are stiffer, of course, and hold their shape.

  • I just started making my own crochet buttons and like Randall, I also use the plastic “bone”rings but I do it on the next to the last round with another round of sc to completely cover the ring.

  • As I was reading the tute, I wondered about inserting a shank button for firmness.  Then I read the comments and got my answer!  What a smart and resourceful group!

  • Love this much easier than trying to crochet over a Cabon and can fit the project! Ie; I am crocheting micropreemie hats (must fit a plum, tangerine, and an orange<lrg. Preemies) for Graham'sFoundation.org. The need is great and they need more hats for boys. Each baby goes through a minimum of 3 hats a day (when parents take baby out of incubator often the hats fall off; parents are allowed to take them home & wash them; however due to MERSA they cannot bring the hats back into the hospital! The baby’s head is one key to keeping that baby’s body temp at the regular temp. They (Graham’s Foundation) have a you tube video out there that tells you all about them. March 23rd is the FIRST ever Preemie Day! If you can help. Visit their website with all the info you need to contribute (even Pamper’s Points help!) Yarn must be soft! Baby’s skin is. Very tender!! NO WOOL a cotton or acrylic yarn is fine. Lion Brand has tons of SOFT baby yarn. You can crochet up a cute hat for a plum size (small preemie). In a 20 min time frame or less. Try to make them cute like little boys brimmed beanies or for girls I use a cupcake hat or cloche pattern. For plum size increase to 18 stitches with a f or g hook and continue down for about 6 rows. Its that easy! If you watch the video choose the Reese’s Peesies Graham’s foundation one ((((LOVE))))) and Newborn hats welcome to for going home packages!
