Milk + Knitting = Comfort

November 17th, 2009

I love advertisements that feature knitting or crocheting, and this Canadian milk campaign is so fun and innovative! The website features a milk-drinking woman who has covered her house in all things knitted, from her phone to her cat. Take time away from knitting to try their virtual knitting game! Quebec residents can even enter for a chance to win computers and video game consoles.

Learn to Knit Socks!

November 2nd, 2009

I love making socks because they’re small, portable, and great for trying new stitches. Many of you on Facebook and Twitter have been asking for help making socks. Our new videos teach you how to knit socks step-by-step. Learn how to use double pointed needles and make a comfortable pair of socks from the cuff down! I used the Mens Grey Socks pattern with Wool-Ease in Gold.

Quick Tips for Avoiding Crafting Pain

September 29th, 2009

Crocheting or knitting for long periods of time can cause discomfort. Here are a few tips to avoid crafting pains:

  • Sit up straight with your feet flat on the floor. Proper posture reduces strain on your back and shoulders, allowing you to sit and move your arms more comfortably.
  • Use proper lighting. Eye strain can cause headaches and make you feel fatigued.
  • Take frequent breaks. Stop for a moment between rows, roll your wrists, and relax. Walk around the room to stretch your legs.
  • Use wrist-friendly tools. Stress Relief Gloves and Ergonomic Crochet Hooks or knitting needles can help alleviate minor wrist pain.
  • Use circular needles when knitting a large number of stitches. The weight of your item will be equally distributed over the circular cable, and the work can rest on your lap instead of weighing down your needles.

If you experience serious or prolonged wrist pain, consult a physician.

Chain Stitches as Jewelry

September 21st, 2009

I always love to see how the fashion world takes crafts like crochet and knitting and reinterprets them in unexpected ways. This simple, oversized crochet chain as necklace is such a fun pop of color from German design duo Gabriel & Schwan. Sehr schön!

Knitta Please Hits Fashion Week

September 16th, 2009

New York Fashion Week is the place to see and be seen. Underground yarn-bombing group Knitta Please got into the spirit by adding colorful knitted covers to poles outside of the Standard Hotel. The project, which will be on display through tomorrow, is meant to celebrate the relationship between fashion, design, crafting, and street culture. Was It Nostalgia?

September 15th, 2009

This pattern from our new catalog was an instant sensation.  Many of you who rated this pattern said that yarn-covered hangers bring back great memories of grandmothers or aunts who had these in their homes.  This updated version uses beautiful colors of the Cotton-Ease yarn and received rave reviews. One customer emailed us that she is planning to make 100 of them to create 10 gifts of 10 hangers each for her friends and co-workers.  It seems like this pattern is just so easy and the results so beautiful and practical that it’s more than nostalgia making these popular.  What do you think?

If you have made any of the patterns on our site, please to post a review.  Your pattern reviews help others decide which patterns to make.

The Knitting Version of Julie and Julia

September 11th, 2009

The film Julie and Julia has inspired one knitter to take her own challenge: knit and blog about all 48 projects from Nicky Epstein’s Knitting on Top of the World. Beginning in January, Mary will knit one garment per month in the order that they appear in the book. She’ll be tracking her progress on her blog. Until then, Mary is preparing by purchasing yarn and supplies, making gauge swatches, and choosing the perfect color combination. It’s an enormous and inspiring task. Best of luck, Mary!
