With Valentine’s Day only a week away, you might be thinking about fast, last-minute patterns you can knit or crochet for someone you love.
If you’re knitting or crocheting for a man, I think it’s important to make something that he’s really going to wear. That means selecting yarns that are easy-care, colors that match his wardrobe, and classic styles and textures. Make the project something he’ll really use day to day and be able to take care of. Here are 6 projects that I think fit the bill, but we’ve got plenty more on our site (plus hats, gloves, and more).
| Knit Basic Scarf
This classic stockinette stitch scarf with garter stitch border gets its interest from the heathered color of Wool-Ease Thick & Quick. Woodsy and natural, it’s adds a touch of quiet interest to this understated scarf. Plus the super bulky yarn will help you finish this project in no time flat. |

| Loom Woven Houndstooth Check Scarf
A classic pattern that’s experiencing a come-back, I love houndstooth’s rich, dapper feel. For the stylish man in your life, consider this quick-to-weave project made on our Knit & Weave Loom Kit. |

| Knit Varsity Stripe Hat & Scarf
You can’t go wrong with a classic striped hat & scarf set. Make it in his favorite team’s colors or his school colors. With such a big color palette in Vanna’s Choice and Vanna’s Choice Baby, you can mix and match to get just the shades you’re looking for. |
|
| Crochet Easy-Wear Scarf
Make him staple that will never go out of style: a classic ribbed scarf that can be wrapped twice for those windy days. It’s also fast-to-crochet in bulky, machine-washable Vanna’s Colors. |

Knit Harbor Scarf For a little added interest, consider a timeless stitch in a smaller scale. These cables add a wonderful honeycomb texture to the scarf, but when combined with the simplicity of the classic off-white yarn, the whole look is still masculine. |
| Crochet Hometown Scarf By holding two strands of solid color yarn together, you can create a tweedy look. Use colors that match his wardrobe, or for a more subtle look, select different shades of the same color. |

I usually make guys 2 x 2 rib knit hats. I use worsted weight yarn, cast on 96 stitches, and knit it long enough to have a fold up brim. That makes a hat that’s stretchy and adjustable so it fits most heads. I try to use “guy friendly” colors-navy blue, black, brown. Or I use colors from their favorite sports team. For students I use their high school or college colors. If you start the hat with a few rounds of the brighter color, it becomes a stripe around the edge of the brim.

With what size needle & yarn
Thanks

As a long time knitter, the number of stitches cast on (96) tells me it must be a worsted weight 4 ply yarn with about a size 9 needle.

I have a very picky husband who loves playing tennis. I made him a crocheted Dickey to protect his neck from the cold breezes. I found lots of knit patterns, but, prefer crochet, so I made my own pattern up and will be posting on my blog, Birdie Creates. He loves the pattern. I also made my son-in-laws the man’s chunky hat and scarf sets from LB, I changed the yarn to Vanna’s Choice (so-o-o soft) and added front post stitches to the brim, they loved them and so did I.

Question: What are “front post stitches?” I’d like to know, so maybe I can incorporate into some scarves I’m making for a donation project. Thanks!
ASH
Front post stitches are when you crochet in to the post rather than the chain of the next stitch. It can be used to create a ribbing effect. You can do a search for “front post double crochet” and find videos that explain how to do this.

A basket weave pattern with a seed stitch border is also very pretty. Fast and easy with big blocks. I used 5 stitches per block. An Italian tweed merino wool made it nice and soft. Even guys can have sensitive skin.

My husband has never been a fan of scarves. He says the long ends always get in the way. But when I kmitted myself a cowl (sometimes called a “tube scarf”), he asked me to knit one for him, too! He wears it a lot in cold weather.

Disappointed you did not also include Mr O Learys scarf which is in your pattern stash. I knitted it for a friend in your Fishermans wool in oatmeal. It was a hit. Annette
