Aside from scarves, I think afghans might be the project that attracts people to knitting or crochet. You can create these projects with just basic skills since many don’t require shaping. All you really need is to start, stitch, have some patience for the size of the project, and finish off.
Besides just being functional, afghans serve some other purposes that are just as important. They can be a reminder of the person who inspired or made them for us, like a constant hug no matter how much time passes. (I know I still have the classic crochet ripple afghan my great grandma made me as a baby!) They also add a touch of warmth and personality to a room.
Fiber For Thought: Do you use the term afghan or blanket more frequently? If you want to be technical and look up the definition you’ll find that blanket is the general term for a large piece of material you wrap yourself in for warmth. A throw is a smaller size version. Afghan is defined as specifically the knit or crochet variation of a blanket.
Knit, crochet, or even craft needle-free! These 3 afghans are just the beginning. Find even more baby and kids sized afghans HERE.
Knit up this sweet little hooded blankie in garter stitch with basic increasing and decreasing. Only 2 balls of Ice Cream® yarn is required for the project.
Basic Stitch Anti Pilling yarn provides a wide array of colors for you to make this afghan as special as the recipient.
The Dexter Baby Blankie is crafted using Off The Hook yarn. This super plush chenille requires only your hands to create the knit-look fabric!
Below is a small sample of the knitting patterns available at Lion Brand. You can see more free knit afghan patterns HERE.
The Tree of Life Afghan has been a customer favorite for a while. (See the crochet version below!) It’s a complex design knit up in Wool-Ease yarn. This is the kind of afghan that will become an heirloom.
I’m in love with the sampler-style patchwork of this afghan! It’s perfect for trying new stitches and combining your favorite colors. Knit using Touch of Alpaca yarn.
The Elbridge Afghan uses Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick® Bonus Bundle to create a rippling feather and fan pattern. It almost reminds me of the classic ripple crochet afghans.
Crochet afghans were my first big project. Maybe because of that, it’s usually this craft that I turn to for my throws and blankets. You can see the full selection of free crochet afghan patterns from Lion Brand HERE.
Like the knit version above, this beautiful afghan stitched in Wool-Ease yarn is sure to become a family treasure.
This afghan caught my eye as soon as we got the shots back from photography! It is made up of squares crocheted in various colors of Mandala® Baby yarn. Don’t be afraid to mix and match!
This is another beauty with just enough detail. Here it’s shown in 5 colors of Touch of Alpaca yarn, however, you can easily work it in a single shade or as a 2-color design.

For the hooded Rainbow on do you have a Crochet version?

For the Stitch Sampler Afghan, it would be really helpful if you provided either a picture of what the afghan looks like once it’s put together or at the very least a diagram of how the pieces are supposed to fit together. While the model holding in her arms is cute, it doesn’t help someone figure out the layout just from words. Picture or diagram please.

Crochet pattern for Elbridge Afghan?
Teresa Gregory
Please show a picture of the full sampler afghan. The picture of the cute girl with it bunched up is charming, but it doesn’t show me the different patterns and what it actually looks like.

As far as names for knit or crochet blankets there are also “lapghans†(lap size afghans), lap robes (sometimes made for wheel chair size), and baby afghans (baby blankets). There are ones for pets in smaller sizes too.
Size can also be a factor in the name. For example, throws are usually smaller afghans that are sometimes tossed over the back of the couch for a quick grab when someone gets cold while in the living room. To me, Afghans are more often in the bedroom for sleeping or napping.
Whatever you want to call them, I enjoy making them!
