Baby booties make an excellent gift for new babies at family get-togethers and holiday gatherings. You can even make a small pair as a sweet memento or holiday ornament for a baby’s first Christmas!
Here are six of our favorite ways to take a basic knit or crochet baby bootie pattern and make it extra-special for the little one in your life. We’ve also included links to free baby bootie patterns on LionBrand.com to help you get started (including the Lavish Booties pictured to the right).
Embroidery
A small initial or simple shape like a star or flower is easy to add, and makes your gift extra-special. You probably already have a large-eye blunt needle for seaming your projects, all you have to do is pick a design and yarn!
Appliqués
Appliqués make perfect additions to your booties! You can add tiny handmade shapes by stitching each one up as a separate piece in any color you like, and then sewing them onto your finished booties. Make sure to stitch them on firmly, as little hands may try to pull at them while playing.
Sparkle
Adding a glimmer of sparkle to glam-up your booties is a wonderful idea. You can even alternate between sparkling yarn and your regular working yarn to add a little more visual interest. The sparkling Bonbons multi-packs are a great option if you’re interested in making small sparkling projects.
Stripes

Buttons

Make it a set!
The only gift that could be cuter in booties would be a matching baby set. Make your favorite baby projects in the same yarn, or using the same sort of appliqués, embroidery or buttons and your set will match beautifully! The best part is you don’t have to make something specific. Crocheted hats and knitted booties, a woven blanket and crocheted booties, or a blanket, hat, booties and mittens all in the same yarn; any of these would make a great set and a wonderful gift.

I do baby blankets for all the girls at church. Whenever they find out they are pregnant, I am told when and what sex. Then I get started and have it for their baby shower! I’ve had to start a journal because they are having their second and third babies and I don’t want to repeat myself. That way the kids will know which blanket is theirs!

Right now I am making a cocoon with purple homespun for my niece. Its her first baby. We are so excited….. I love Lion Brand Yarn.
