Crafting Your Summer Festival Look

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Summer festival season is almost here — in fact, it’s only about a month until Coachella hits the California desert. That means you need to put together the perfect boho-chic look, and nothing could be better than an outfit you made yourself.

It’s certainly possible to knit or crochet your entire look, but if you don’t want to spend that much time, you can always make a few smaller elements of the ensemble. Add that handmade touch easily with few jewelry pieces, a sun-blocking hat, or a cute tote.

Accessories

As we mentioned this morning, nothing says festival like a flower crown, so that’s a great accessory to make. Some i-cords and some knit flowers make an easy and fun project. Make them all in DIYarn and it’s an inexpensive, durable piece you can wear all summer! As an added bonus, it travels well. This piece will squish into a suitcase without getting bent or wrecked like a regular flower crown would.

One of the simplest and fastest accessories to make is jewelry. The Boho Chic Earrings above require a small amount of Sock-Ease®, and only consist of three rounds of crochet (two are worked around rings so they hold their shape). You could make several pairs of these for everyone you’re going to the festival with.

Most jewelry takes very little yarn, and often very basic skills. Some pieces can even be done without any knitting or crochet, so they’re great crafts to make with friends who don’t know how to do either of those! Try the Rio Necklaces shown above. If you can braid and wrap yarn, then you can make them.

Jewelry isn’t the only quick accessory, of course! Add interest and sparkle to any look with some fun crocheted Opera Sleeves made with Vanna’s Glamour®. Protect your arms from the elements and keep warm as the summer day turns into evening.

Add some fringed fun to your look with the Belly Dance Fringe Belt, made from Alpine Wool or any other bulky weight yarn. Use scraps and leftovers to make the fringe and customize the size to fit perfectly over any look. This adds interest and boho whimsy to your outfit heat.

Festival Bags

If you’re spending all day at a festival, you need a good purse. Sewrella’s Mykonos Bag uses Fast-Track® to make a durable but chic bucket-style bag. (Note: we are currently sold out of the pictured color Truckers Taupe, but we have many other colors to choose from as a substitute).

The Encantada Bag is made with sturdy-but-light 24/7 Cotton®, and is big enough for everything you need. You can throw it over one shoulder or wear it as a backpack, and the drawstring closure will keep all your stuff safe. As a bonus, the cotton yarn is washable, so if it gets dirty at the fest, it’s easy to clean.

Not everyone wants to carry a large bag around all day. If you’d prefer something smaller, the Boho Festival Purse in 24/7 Cotton® and the Shimmer by Night Bag in Vanna’s Glamour® are both stylish and useful choices. They’ll hold your wallet, phone, and a little sunblock, but aren’t so big that they’ll get in the way or be too heavy when you get tired.

Cover Your Head

Even though it’ll be warm out, you may want to cover your head. It can keep your face and scalp from getting sunburned, keep your hair contained, and, frankly, just look really cute. Try something lacy and open to stay cool, or make a hat with a brim to ward off the sun. It’s always a good idea to have a hat on hand just in case, and they don’t take up much space in your bag.

Note: the Mod Lace Hat pattern calls for a discontinued yarn. You can substitute any of our category 4 (medium) weight yarns in its place, especially 24/7 Cotton®, Heartland®, or our newest addition, New Basic. Those should work up similarly, but always check your gauge.

Wrap it Up

No matter how hot it is during the day, you’re going to want something to cover up as the sun sets. Pick a wrap or poncho; they’re easy to carry but will still keep you warm. Throw one on over your regular clothes to keep the sun off your shoulders during the day, and ward off the chill when evening rolls in.
