Queued Up: New & Noteworthy Crochet & Yarn

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

I’m back to give all you crocheters a case of *startitis!

Startitis – The condition of beginning all the new projects. So many new projects you may qualify for a PHD (project half done)!

For this round of Queued Up I decided to focus on some new crochet kits and also a new yarn that have recently gone live on LionBrand.com.

New Crochet Kits

The Glencoe Tartan Poncho

The Glencoe poncho is a crochet kit from Olivia of Hopeful Honey. It uses a combination of Wool-Ease® and Touch of Alpaca®. The Tartan plaid design is created by working single crochet stripes and weaving lengths of yarn through your piece!

Words from Olivia:

“Whilst freely roaming through rolling hills of lush green and heather, the Glencoe Tartan Poncho provides ample room for those on-the-go needing a soft garment to retreat into. Simple comfort elevated by carefully chosen details, this pullover will have you feeling bundled in the winter months, all thanks to the timeless turtleneck and flowy, flattering drape. Side vents and exaggerated sizing give this garment easy style, while the rich, mirrored tartan design harkens back the the past, brought beautifully up-to-date in a modern piece with lasting appeal. With a flask of tea slipped into your bag, the misty moors offer a compelling place to head as you wander through the valleys enveloped in your newfound companion, the Glencoe Tartan Poncho…The kind of perfect pullover that is day-in-and-day-out cozy and comfortable!”

The Daydream Blanket

The Daydream blanket is worked in a simple Tunisian crochet stitch. In Tunisian crochet stitches stay “live” on a special crochet hook with an attached cord. It looks something like a hybrid between knit and crochet.

Words from ChiWei:

“A cloudy day by the coast, filled with the craggy rocks to the bustling harbor with its colorful boats bobbing in the water, out to a serene expanse of blue. Watching people at their busy lives, and wondering what is happening on the other side of the endless water. The Daydream Blanket design represents those moments of peace when you allow your thoughts to wander, feeling alone and yet, not lonely. The blanket itself a cozy lap-sized afghan made using Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick. Worked up in a Tunisian Simple Stitch, the blanket is easy to make, full of rich texture and soft color, and thick enough to keep you warm on the breeziest of harbor days.”

Just In: A New Yarn!

Perhaps even more exciting (to me) than all the new kits is this yarn that recently hit the Lion Brand website. Fifty Fifty is a new super bulky (CYC6) yarn that’s part of the LB® Collection. It’s 50% wool and 50% alpaca and calls my name on so many levels.

I love the natural fibers. Yarns that are at least 50% wool are my personal favorite and this one has the added 50% alpaca, which makes it super soft. The alpaca does give the yarn a halo. If you’ve worked with this fiber before you’ll probably expect that since it’s one of the common characteristics.

Expect projects in Fifty Fifty to go from WIP to FO in no time. The recommended hook is a Q-19 (15 mm) and knitting needle size is #17 (13 mm). Those make some big stitches!
