Will granny squares ever go out of style? I think not. They’re portable, can use stash and scrap yarn, and have so far withstood the test of time. These iconic squares have grown far beyond the “traditional” granny square into elaborate motifs and medallions. In this post we will be stitching a flower circle-in-square variation. I’ve chosen to highlight the circular center with sunflower coloring, however, other color combinations or even a solid color would also be beautiful!
Re-Up Yarn in Colors
H/5mm Crochet Hook
Gauge is not important, this square can be worked in any yarn weight and used alone or in a serious to make up afghans, runners, cushions, or anything else you can dream up.
Finished Size: The finished sunflower square size using Re-Up yarn and an H/5mm hook is approximately 6.5″ x 6.5″ after blocking.
Try joining the squares together for blankies and throws. 36 squares would make a baby blankie (using the finished size of the Re-Up squares) and use approximately 1,400 yards of worsted weight (58 yards Color A; 346 yards Color B; 115 yards Color C; 865 yards Color D).
Squares can also be joined together to form pillows. Try making 4 colored squares for the pillow front and 4 solid color squares for the back!
Step 1: With Color A, chain 4 and slip stitch to form ring.
Round 1: – Color A – Ch 2 (counts as 1st dc), 15 dc into center of ring, join with a slip stitch to top of beginning ch – 16 dc
Round 2: – Color B – Join yellow yarn with a slip stitch between any dc. Work 16 petal puff stitches around in the spaces between dc sts as follows: *[yo, insert hook through space between stitches and pull up a loop] 4 times, yo and pull through all loops on needle, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join with a slip st to first petal puff to close round – 16 petals.
Round 3: – Color B – Slip st through the next ch-1 space. Begin working another round of petal puff sts through ch-1 spaces as follows: *[yo, insert hook through space and pull up a loop] 4 times, yo and pull through all loops on needle, ch 2; repeat from * another 15 times, join with a slip st to top of first petal puff – 16 petals
Round 4: – Color C – Join green yarn with a slip stitch to any ch-2 space. Ch 2 (counts as 1st dc), [2dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in same space, *[ch 2, 3 dc] in the next 3 ch-2 spaces, [3dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in next space; rep from * twice more, [ch 2, 3 dc] in the next 3 ch-2 spaces, ch 2, slip stitch to top of beginning ch-2 – 20 dc clusters
Round 5: – Color D – Join Ecru yarn with a slip st to a corner ch-2 space. Ch 2 (counts as 1st dc), 2 dc in same space, *[ch 2, 3 dc] in the next 4 ch-2 spaces, [3dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in next space; rep from * twice more, [ch 2, 3 dc] in the next 4 ch-2 spaces, ch 2, 3 dc in first corner space, ch 2, slip stitch to top of beginning ch-2 – 24 dc clusters
Round 6: – Color D – ch 2 (counts as 1st dc), work 1 dc in each st across edge, work [dc, ch 2, dc] in each corner ch-2 space, end by working ch 2 and joining with a slip st to beginning of rnd ch.

I do not find where to click for directions for Sunflower crochet directions.
Thanks for your help.

The photo covers the directions on my view. I think I can figure it out from the photo but directions would have been nice lol. I’m a big fan of sunflowers!

Did you realize your photo of the square is wrong side up?

Would like to make this but the picture of the granny square obstructs the view of the directions. I am using an iPad, very disappointing

Is there a tutorial for the petal puff stitch? I’m struggling.
