Non-Slip Slipper Bottoms

Slippers are popular winter projects for both crocheters and knitters. However, the soles of handmade slippers can be, well, slippery. Here are a few ideas for making your slipper soles non-skid.
Felted Slip Ons

  • Pre-made soles. Our suede soles are durable and warm. They also add some traction to your slippers. You can also find leather soles or anti-skid gripping fabric that can be attached to your project.
  • Puffing craft paint. Simply dot the paint on your slipper bottoms (like the bottoms of commercially produced slippers). Although your paint may wear off a bit with heavy use, you can just reapply the dots.
  • Liquid rug backing. Found in craft and home improvement stores, this product can be painted onto slipper bottoms. It then dries to form a durable, skid-free sole.

  • I think that the puffer paints and the liquid rug backing are toxic chemicals.
    The pre-made soles and their sizes don’t seem to coincide to normal american shoe sizes.
    What other materials are easily available and enhance grip for slippers?

    • Hi, Egrace. Most puff paint available on the market is non-toxic. Although many liquid rug backings contain ammonia, there are some great non-toxic versions.

    • what about the anti slip cloth you can get to put on trays to stop plates etc moving about or you can put it under sugs to stop it slipping

      • The only thing about the anti slip cloth can be to gripping so you trip in gate!

          i think I would stick it to some fabric cut the fabic to shape then sew it on using a zig zag stich on the machine

  • I use Mold Builder – it’s a liquid you can find at a local craft store with the other glues, etc.- takes a couple applications and you have to let it dry between thin applications, but the results seem to be worth it. I made a cardboard cut out that helps me keep the soles in a nice smooth oval shape (or whatever shape you might want).

      do you ever crochet insoles fro your shoes I ahve thought about it but any tips you may have would be welcomed

  •     I WISH THE YARN COMPANIES WOULD COME OUT
    WITH A CLEAR STUFF U COULD ADD TO THE YARN SO AS U CROCHET THE BOTTOMS, IT
    WOULD BE NON-SKID TO THE BOTTOM OF SLIPPERS OR OTHER ITEMS. THE STUFF COULD BE
    MADE ROUND OR FLAT.

    LOOKING INTO THAT VERY SAME THING TODAY. 
    I WANT TO GO BACK TO THE CRAFT STORES TO CHECK OUT THIS STRINGING STUFF
    IN THE KIDS CRAFT SECTION TO SEE IF THAT WOULD BE TO COSTLY, OR SEE IF ITS
    NON-SKID. I READ WHERE SOMEONE USED RUBBER BANDS TO CROCHET INTO THE BOTTOM OF
    THE SLIPPERS. THAT SEEMED LIKE A LOT OF KNOTS TO ME, OR ONE HUGE RUBBER BAND.

    SO MANY OF THE HOUSE SLIPPER PATTERNS BUT, THEY ARE NOT SAFE. MY GRANDCHILDREN COULD
    USE SOME CROUCHED SLIPPERS, BUT NOT UNTIL I FIND A WAY TO MAKE THEM CHEAPER
    THEN BUYING, AND WITH NON-SLIP BOTTOMS. THE ONLY USE I SEE FOR THEM AREA WHEN I
    MAKE BABY BOOTIES, WHEN THEY DON’T GET USED FOR WALKING..

         I
    THINK THAT SOMEONE, MAYBE EVEN THE YARN COMPANIES SHOULD MAKE SOMETHING FOR ALL
    OF US.  

       UNTIL THEN, IM LOOKING FOR SOMETHING I CAN
    CROCHET THE BOTTOMS OF THE SLIPPERS WITH OR MAYBE SOMETHING I CAN MIX IN WITH MY
    YARN.  IM GOING TO PRICE THIS ELASTIC
    COLORED BEADING STRINGS AND BRACELET STRINGING STUFF I REMEMBER SEEING, BUT
    DIDN’T THINK ABOUT IT UNTIL TODAY WHEN I SAW AN ADORABLE PATTERN AND WANTING
    NON SKID SLIPPERS FOR ALL THE GRAND KIDS SO THEY HAVE WARM FEET ON OUR WOOD
    FLOORS..

      THEY SELL NON SLIP SOCKS, BUT THEY DON’T PUT
    ENOUGH STUFF ON THE BOTTOM OF THE SOCKS, THEY DIDN’T PUT THE STUFF ON THE HEALS
    AND THAT NEEDS SOME ALSO. THE TODDLERS ARE FULL SPEED AND SLIP AND FALL AND GET
    UP AND KEEP RUNNING. I REGRET TO SAY, I GREW OUT OF BEING ABLE TO DO THAT.

  • I was hoping to find a yard with non stick embedded that could be crocheted into a sole, then attached.

  • I would like to know if you can make adn sell. Some.kind of non skid producto. For intance like the dotes on Doctor Schools sock. I am looking for other métodos but I don’t want to ruin the softness of the yarn. The spray method they ruin the color of the yarn. Aldo I would like to wash adn drymy slippers no harm done.
