Announcing Our Summer 2011 Crochet-Along Featuring the Mesh Raglan Pullover

There’s no need to sign up; simply follow along with the blog posts at your own pace as you crochet your sweater.

My name is Kendra and I’ll be your CAL host! I work at the Lion Brand Yarn Studio, Lion Brand’s unique retail & education center in New York City, where I am both a crochet and knitting instructor and I can’t wait to work through this project with you. Click here to learn more about me. Mesh Raglan PulloverTo start, this week is just about getting your yarn and other materials together. The pattern is made in our Recycled Cotton, which is a fabulous worsted-weight, cotton-acrylic blend that is made from the discarded fabric from tee-shirt production. It comes in beautiful tweed shades and has a great drape making it perfect for a summery top.

Cotton-Ease and Lion Cotton are other great summer yarns, which are both worsted weight and come in a wide variety of colors. Cotton-Ease is another cotton-acrylic blend where the addition of acrylic lends a stretch and drape to the cotton, making it a wonderful choice for garments. Lion Cotton is 100% cotton, which gives it great strength and structure, but it can also make it a little heavy for use in a sweater. Given the open fabric of this top, however, it could also make for a good choice.

As with any yarn substitution, you’ll need to figure out how many balls of your chosen yarn the top will take. The top is written for five sizes, and here are the number of balls for each of our recommended yarns:

Editor’s note: If you’re planning on modifying the pullover in terms of length or planning on keeping your gauge swatch, you may want to purchase an extra ball, just in case.

Now which size should you make? This top is meant to have a slightly loose fit, meaning it has some positive ease, so you want to select a size which measures a little larger than your bust measurement. When in doubt, it’s useful to measure a top you own, whose fit you like, and pick the size closest to that garment’s measurements.

Starting next week I’ll be sharing my progress through the top, starting with the all-important gauge swatch! I’ll also give you an overview of the construction of the garment so you’ll know how it’s going to come together. The following posts will work through the top starting with creating the yoke, moving on to the underarms and body, then the sleeves, and lastly the finishing work and blocking to make your garment perfect! So pick out your yarn, gather your hooks and stitch markers, and check back next week as this CAL really gets going!

  • I didn’t vote for this pattern because the side picture wasn’t good and I wasn’t sure whether or not I liked the style. Now that I can see the front view I think I like it better and I’ll be looking forward to watching the CAL posts to see it in even greater detail.

  • I’m excited to make this top!  I think I want to make it a little longer (I like the tunic length that’s popular right now), but I’ll wait and see how it turns out.  I haven’t done a CAL before, although I followed a little bit last year, and I’m excited for a chance to have feedback at different stages of the project.

      • I’ll definitely let you know how it goes.  I haven’t altered a pattern significantly before, so I’ll probably have to play around with the bottom band.  I don’t know if I’ll want the tie at the bottom either.  Let’s stay in touch!

        • It looks like we might get lucky on this pattern since it starts at the top and works down.  We should be able to add extra rows at the bottom without a problem.  I was wondering about the bottom tie as well.  This may be something I do not add to the piece.   I might want to lengthen the sleeves a little too.  Do you think we can do this without them ending up looking like wings?  :-)  

          • I am not sure about the sleeves :).  It seems like since those work top down too, it will be easy to back up and try again if the look isn’t just right. I went ahead and bought an extra skein just to make sure I can do as much as I want.

  • I am so excited this won the vote! I will pick up my yarn this weekend, and follow along. I wanted to do this one as a crossover from doing afghans and scarves, I have never done a fitted garment before.

  • I would love to join this but not sure what yarn I would most want to use from my stash (must use stash yarn or can’t do this project at all)  

  • How much crocheting experience do you need to do this?

    • Hi, Debbie. The pattern isn’t too difficult. I’d recommend skimming through the pattern to see if you’re comfortable with the stitches used. Since we’re all working on this together, it’s a great way to expand your skills!

  • Will there be a winter project?  I just started the crochet shrug using Lion Brand Homespun yarn.  Don’t really have time for two projects.  thanks

    • Since we alternate knit-along with crochet-alongs, the next CAL will probably be in winter or spring.

  • I love the Recycled Cotton yarn.  I had already printed out the pattern from your website and bought the Rose and Green yarns.  It will be great working along with you as we work on this top.

    • I just bought my yarn through Lion Brand….on sale.Yeah!!! Also, July is no shipping….I am  excited waiting for it to come in to me.  I have a couple prayer shawls and baby sweater started but this will be a good back to school for me.

  • I am going to try it but I have never used stitch markers before. Will I have the skills I need? I recognize all the stitches in the pattern and have done them before. I plan to make it for myself. I also have never had to do a gauge swatch before. So I guess I have to wait until next week to start.

    • I think you’ll be just fine, Jean! Think of stitch markers as a cheat sheet so you don’t have to do as much counting.

    • Ditto Jean. I saw this pattern earlier and the adv. int. skill level turned me away. So I decided to do something else, but I think I’ll try this CAL. Can’t wait to get started.

    • Jean, you will love using stich markers.  Makes it easy to know what you are doing.

  • I voted for this pattern not only because I liked it best, but because it was the only green out of the other three red photos. This is my first CAL and im looking forward to it. I am making this just because…for the experience of a CAL. =)

  • I am so disappointed.  As a Plus Size crocheter I was really hoping one of the other items would win.  But a 45 1/2 inch bust is just a little too small for me.  Maybe next time!!!

    • I agree. Is this an easy pattern to make larger?

    • You might want to try it anyway.  I am large in the chest and always have trouble with a good fit that doesn’t look sloppy.  You could try a larger needle.  I started this top in a 1X and got the yoke done.  It seemed just too big so I am starting over with a smaller size or needle.  I do like this top.   Plus it will stretch some. 

    • Me, too — I often make patterns in the 2X size, but the bust measurement is usually quite a bit larger. I think the choices should have a larger range of sizes. I have this yarn in pink but am afraid to mess it up if I try to enlarge the pattern, and it doesn’t work.

      • I started with the 1x and started over doing large.  not sure what will happen but I’m giving it a try.  I certainly don’t like starting over!

    • Hi Bwheaton, see my earlier blog post about how a pattern can be made larger by using a thicker yarn — a relatively easy fix, since you can use the pattern as written. Hope that helps!

  • Well, this isn’t the one I voted for, but after seeing the new pic, I like it!  I don’t, however, like cotton yarn.  Soooo … I’m gonna try this with some yarn I bought that I loved but had no project for.  It’s Vanna’s Choice in Seaspray Mist – a light green and white varigated yarn.  I think it will love fabulous (similar to the pic)!

    • Wait.  They usually give you weekly instructions (like every Wednesday for example), with pictures and hints.

    • Rosie, it seems all crochet a longs are only for the ones who have been crocheting for years, I’d lile one that is for beginners..  It is a beautiful top but not sure I can follow the pattern either.

      • Try the tension square and follow the instructions.  From what I’ve seen, you are going backwards and forwards along the rows.  If you don’t have a go you never know.

    • Hi there! The best way to judge if it’s something you want to try is to read through the pattern stitches and notes to see how much makes sense to you. There’s no time like the present to try new crochet techniques! Keep watching the blog each week where I’ll be giving you hints to help you through the pattern and we’re all here to help each other!

  • I’ve never done a CAL before…about how long does it take?  Have never made an actual garment where gauge really matters, so this would be a great learning experience me.

  • I was already planning on making this top! I saw it in the Lion Brand magazine! I have the yarn also! It was on sale awhile back online! I was going to wait ’til all my other projects were finished, but not now!

    • Hi! They are listed at the top of the pattern, below the size names (small, medium, etc) it gives the actual finished measurements.

  • I have a different brand of cotton yarn in a couple of varigated colors.  I undid what I had started so I can start on this, that project was going nowhere anyway!  ;).  It’s in pastels, white, green, aqua, lavender.  The pattern looks pretty easy for those of you who are relative beginners.

  • By coincidence, I had just started working on this when I noticed it was a candidate for CAL! This is my first CAL and I am enjoying it.

    I am Delilah from Winnipeg. I am using UltraPima by Cascade Yarns in white. I did not do a gauge swatch, so I will do one now before I continue with the top. I’ll let you know how that goes – I may have to start the top over. 🙁

    I am also planning on making it longer, as others have mentioned.

    For those asking about the level of difficulty – the stitches are easy, it is the interesting construction that some may find a challenge. So far I have had no trouble. The instructions are clear and easy to understand.

    The yarn is very silky with a lovely drape. I am making the top for myself. I plan on wearing it often – in the summer only of course!

  • I have never done a crochet along… but this project looks like something I could do and I am very interested in it… but I need a larger size than the pattern allows.  I need a 3X-Large.  Any suggestions on how to do that would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!

    • I’m goin to try and add extra stitches at the under arm chain and see if that works.  But I think this pattern is going to run a little big anyway and you do have the stretch factor.

      • Tomorrow is my birthday!!!  My yarn (my gift from my wonderful grandmother from whom I inherited my love of crochet) just got here!  For buck bang, I purchased from a discount house.  I am using a soysilk/wool/hemp mix.  It was supposed to be worsted weight… but it is DK-LIGHT which I learned is a weight class of 3, not 4.

        Can I still use it?  And if so, how does this change what I do? Your help is greatly appreciated.

  • This isn’t the pattern I voted for but choosing was difficult because I liked them all.  I plan on still making some of the others.  I have my yarn and I’m excited to get going!  

  • I’m trilled this is the pattern that won the vote.  I had bought yarn to make this during the winter, and it is still in my closet.  I’ll be taking it out tonight and will be making guage swatches.  I’m still new at doing garments and swatches.  What if one hook is too big and the next size down is too small?  Should I just pick the closest one.  It always seems like it should be perfect and mine never are.

  • if you are to pick your size according to your chest measurements and the pattern only says s,m,l,or xl…what are the measurements for these?  Don’t want to make something that doesn’t fit!

    • Download the actual pattern.  It has chest and length measurements.

  • Ohhh … I really want to do this project (I’ve never done a CAL before), but I have soooooooooo many projects in process already that I should really finish.  What to do … what to do …  ?!

    • Hi Vicel, since this pattern is made from the top down (from the neckline downwards), there are lots of opportunities to lengthen different parts, including the sleeves. You’ll definitely want to pick up 2-3 extra balls of yarn for the sleeves though.

      • I’m going to lengthen sleeves.  I do have some yarn in my stash that I will be using.  Can’t wait to start.

  • I’m excited to try this. I am terrible at getting the gauge right though!! I am going to use some Bamboo Silk i got on sale in a sort of denim blue. It is a little lighter weight than the yarns they are recommending. Is that going to be a big problem. I always crochet tighter than a pattern calls for too.

    • I would like to do this as my first CAL project as well and I would like to make the sleeves elbow length (to hide my fat upper arms of course!).   I will pick one of the yarns on the list because I have found that each yarn (even if supposedly the same weight) makes up differently and makes getting the gauge right much more difficult.  Also, to the person planning on using Homespun, you might want to reconsider because it is thick and stretchs a lot in something with this kind of open and loose pattern to it. 

      • Thanks for the feedback on Homespun. The heaviness of it is why I thought it would work with an open, loose pattern. I’m not be doing it for a summer garment, but as an over-blouse with a long-sleeved tee or other type of tee under it. BUT (!) today I ordered the recommended yarn in Marine. Looking forward to this experience.

      • Hi, I like your idea, too, of elbow length sleeves.  No one told me as you got older that the dimples on your face moved to your arms LOL  I inquired just now if there would be someone to guide us in making desired changes, so hopefully the answer will be yes.  Good luck to you! Barbara

        • Hi Barbara, crochet-along host Kendra will address issues such as alterations during the crochet-along. Also, keep in mind that since the top is made from the neckline down, you can lengthen either the body or sleeves as you go along (just continue the pattern of that area until you get your desired length). Just be sure to purchase extra yarn.

      • I too am looking forward to this project.  Why is it that even the womens sized clothing now has those infinitesimal 2″ sleeves.  My favorite way to lose 10# quickly is to put on a shirt w. elbow length sleeves.  These look as though they would lengthen OK – just work even until they are the length needed – well, we’ll see as the CAL goes along!

  • Some things can’t be kitted or crocheted, but some can like sweaters, hats, socks ect.  But is just doesent look right to were (exept on babys and little kid) tanktops and shortsleves. I does not attractive at all.

    • … and some people are brave enough to post even if English isn’t their first language or they have disabilities that interfere with spelling … but they try.  Thanks for trying.

      • I agree.  They may not have the best spelling or grasp of the english languaage but atleast they are involved and posting comments.

  • Hey I don’t know if anyone mentioned this but sizing is not important for this project. This project is top down which means you can try it on as you go and if it’s not large enough, keep working the raglan increases until it is.  So don’t pass it up if you don’t see your size.  For newbies this also means that your gage is not super important because you can try it on as you go- stop making increases if your gage is too big but it fits or add more increase rows if your gage is too small.

    • I started this pattern (which I really like on the small girl).  Got the yoke done and the neck area was just too big.   So I’m starting over with smaller size or smaller needle.

      • Could you fill in the neck with an extra row or two of the trim?  I’m not sure if that would work, but it’s an alternative to starting over.

        • Yes, you could add extra at the neck line.  I think this pattern might run a little big and then you have the stretch factor.  I started over with the large instead of 1x. I’ll see wht happens.  It does seem like a very easy pattern.  I have made baby sweaters in this fashion. 

  • I really like this project but will need to incorporate a slit or v-neck in the front because of a comfort issue. I am experienced with crochet. Any suggestions?

    • I’ll do some thinking on that, but given the construction of the top (in the round from the top down) an easy modification to achieve that isn’t coming to mind. I’ll keep it in mind though!

      • It looks to me that if the Yoke is worked in rows instead of rounds, then joined at the end of the last one, that would create a slit in the center front that would be as deep as the underarm placement.  If that is too long a slit, the piece could be joined in an earlier ‘row’.

        • That was my initial thought too, but the join isn’t at the center of the front, it’s along the back of the shoulder 🙁 Moving it would require moving all of the increases to still form the shaping correctly, and then the seam would be down the front of the sweater. Although the joins are fairly subtle, the joining of each round looks slightly different, hence it’s placement along the back shoulder. Good thought though!

  • I used to crochet for my grandpa years ago but haven’t done a large item in quite a while.  This will be the perfect project to get started again – I’m thinking blues!

  •  This top was a maybe in my pile of items to make.  But the new picture sold me.  I will try to fit it in with the piles of baby items that I am am making.  All three of my children are expecting at the same time.  So far there are two girls coming.  I will find out soon what the last one is going to be.   I know, TMI, but I am excited.  I haven’t purchased my yarn yet. I will this weekend. I am excited to start this CAL. It will be nice to make something for myself.

    • New babies are never TMI (at least IMO)!!!  I was expecting at the same time as my sis and sis-in-law, so I’m rejoicing with you!

  • Hi there, will be my first CAL also and my first something to wear.  Am a knitter, always having trouble having the right amount of stitches left at the end of a crochet row but will just count every row end, I guess. 

    A couple of people mentioned different endings i.e. longer length to top and elbow length of sleeve, which I would also like.  Will there be someone to guide us for style changes?  Looking forward to this new horizon 🙂 Barbara Bee

  • This is a really cute top, but I’m not sure if the sizing will work
    for me. In order to have enough positive ease, I’ll need a bigger size
    than what is listed on the pattern size. Since this is a top-down
    construction, will it be enough to simply start with more stitches? Or
    are there more involved shaping considerations?

  • Hi–This is my first crochet along and this is the pattern I voted for so I am very happy.  I’m from Central Jersey and is happy that Kendra is just a 50 minute ride away.  I’ve been wanting to take a visit to the studio so maybe this will give me a push I needed to visit.  I’ve been crocheting since I was 5 years old so crocheting has been a love of mine for 50 years.  I am looking forward to our weekly blogs–have a great 4th.

  • I have enough Cotton Ease in a nice shade of green I think I’ll use. I lost 25 pounds over the past few months and need new summer tops that don’t hang off me, so I’m not sure what size to make, but I’m sure I can figure it out. I also wonder if I can make the sleeves a bit longer? This very short length isn’t flattering to women over 40. I may try to make it them about 3 or 4 inches longer if I can do it without the sleeves looking like wings. I like the length of the body. 

    • I agree with you mimi, about making sleeves and total length longer.  shouldn’t be a problem.  I wish I could lose some weight.   I’m using cotton eas also, in a very pretty shade of purple.  I wonder why recylced cotton cost so much!!

  • So glad this one was picked for the project.   I am making mine in Lion Brand acrylic knitting worsted in black. After the project is done.  This will make a great pullover for  a cotton top.

    • Oh, I like the idea of doing in black.  Mine will be in lime green cotton ease, which I love.  But now I’m thinking I may need a second one in black.  Would be a whole other look.  We’ll see how it goes.  I like it!

  • What other kinds of yarn do you think would work for this project besides cotton?  I love this pattern-very excited about working with it!

    • Any worsted-weight (category 4) yarn can be used for this pattern, such as Wool-Ease or Vanna’s Choice. Enjoy!

  • This is my first time joining the crochet a long.  I’m going to try doing this in the cotton.  I make a lot of home decorator stuff in all cotton, so I always have plenty at hand.  This way I don’t have to go out of my way to buy yarn for something for me!  I only do that for the grandchildren;)

  • YIKES!  I am so excited to start this project…I have never done a CAL before, and have only tried a couple of very simple garments…for my daughter.  I’m nervous, but excited!

  • Is the cotton yarn pre-shrunk? I’d hate to make it, then wash it and have it turn out too smal..

    • That’s what gauge swatches are for! But as long as you follow the care instructions on the yarn label (also listed on the website), the yarn shouldn’t shrink. Check back next week for gauge swatch tips.

  • I voted for this project, and hope to jump in as the CAL progresses. I’m considering the LB organic cotton, or some other yarn from my stash. I’ll be working on a couple of aran knit sweaters and trying to keep up with my Associate’s classes at the same time, so if I fall away, know that I remain with you all in spirit.

  • Darn, I had some Bamboo/acrylic microfiber that I’m looking for a use for–it doesn’t have a weight number on it, but it looks an awful lot like a 1 or 2 weight.  (I hate it when it’s not marked!)  So, I guess that goes back into the closet and I dig a little deeper…Something that won’t be too hot in an Arkansas summer…

  • For all you “nervous nellies”,  if this CAL is anything like the winter afghan CAL they had, instructions will be precise, pictures will be included for the stitches and directions, and not only will the moderator help you, but so will the whole blog network.  Relax, enjoy, and, if you cant get to the current weeks instructions, they remain posted so do it on your own pace.  I finished the afghan about a month after the end of the tutorials!   • I love raglan shaping- it’s amazing how you create shoulders and sleeves from one piece. I’ve only done it in knitting, and I’m excited to try it with crochet. I have a bunch of “I Love this Cotton” in buttery yellow from Hobby Lobby, so I’ll probably use that. I can’t wait to wear this and show it off!

  • In reading over the pattern and trying to select some yarn (I’m on a yarn diet and want to use up stash) I realized I have an issue with gauge swatch instructions:
    Gauge is given as 18 sts 7 rows = 4″
    Does that mean in pattern stitch? What stitches and what kind of rows?

    • Hi! From the pattern it says: “18 sts 7 rows = 4 in (10 cm) in pattern,” meaning in the mesh stitch of the pattern. This will be covered in detail next week so check back then!

  • Has anyone finished the Yoke and started the portion where it says mark the sleeves /underarms.  I am stumped.  I know I am starting earlier than our start date but I was excited to get rolling.   Can someone help with the instructions where it says Notes:  Join with sl st to mark the sleeves…..  

    • I’m almost done with the yoke.  I had trouble with the neck being too large and started over with a smaller size.  I’ll look at that part and see what it means.  I have done baby sweaters made top down like this pattern and I think I know what to do.  I’ll let you know.  Have 2 more rows to go.

I ordered the recycled cotton yarn, which I also just used to knit up a tote bag. And I want to say that I enjoyed working with this yarn so very much; I’m looking forward to crocheting with it now.What is the start date for the CAL? July 7th?

  • I bought the Recycled Cotton today on Clearance (hooray!) at Joanns so I am ready to go.  I started to read thru the directions and the update/corrections at the top of the pattern (some in black, some in red) were very confusing.  Will that be explained next week when we start?

    • Don’t worry about the corrections – they are updated in the pattern already if you downloaded it in the past couple of days. They are just listed at the top of the page for people who have an older version to see that changes have been made.

  • I’m LInda from NJ.  I’m an experienced crocheter but I am also having trouble with the yarn swatch.  I’ve been doing it in the V-stitch and it’s entirely too large.  I’m down to a size E hook and it’s still too wide.  I may try just swatching 18 dc and see if it matches.  Already figured I would make the small even though measurement-wise I’m a medium.  I’ve worked with cotton yarn before and it stretches alot.

  • Reading the pattern I note there isn’t a good explanation of the appropriate stitch pattern for the gauge swatch. I’m pretty sure the V st. is only for increasing and decreasing…. and a mesh stitch is used for the body of the sweater. 

    I want to make a swatch before starting. Help please. 

    • Hi Mimi, the mesh stitch is correct (the dc, ch 1) for the swatching. Don’t forget that Kendra will be specifically going over gauge swatching this week, since this last week has been for you to gather your materials. Hope that helps!

  • I read the pattern and the V-stitch is only being used for the increase.  Based on that, I think the 18 sts would be the dc, ch 1 that is used throughout the pattern (9 dc and 9 ch).  I measured and it comes out with the 4 in gauge swatch using these stitches.  Describing the top as “This airy lace top is created with a V-stitch pattern.” is very deceptive since the V-stitch is only used for increases. Hope this helps.

    I’m making mine with a strip pattern changing color every 5th row using the left over cotton ease yarn from another project.  Colors are taupe and mushroom stripes with paprika trim.

    did my guage swatch and was almost dead on the first try…am making an XL since the measurements for the L would be just fitting, and i would like it to be loose to go over a tight fitting tank…but, am going to try it on after i get the first couple of rows to make sure it’s not too big…the tie around the top row should be able to take up any slack if its just barely too big…

  • Hi everyone, greetings from New Brunswick, Canada. Have just completed a move and as soon as I find my boxes of yarn I will begin. I’m sure I have something on hand I can use. If not, Michael’s is just down the road. I’m so glad this pattern was chosen. I voted for it because I figured I would get the most use out of this garment, and if it turned out as beautiful as it looks I’ll make a couple more for gifts. Can’t wait to get started.

  • i am making this top already.  i had decide before I see the blog.  i am making it in acrylic and am wondering why garments aren’t usually made with acrylic.  

    • Hi Tnconrad12, garments can be made with just about any fiber, but keep in mind that since different fibers have different properties, they’re best for different projects. Acrylics and animal fibers like wool tend to trap heat, but have more “memory” (keep their shape better). Cottons tend to be cooler, but heavier in weight and have less memory. That’s why two of the recommended yarns in the blog post above suggest cotton-acrylic blends, which have the memory of acrylic, but the cool, summer-friendly feel of cotton. However, as with all crochet-alongs, you’re welcome to use whatever yarn you choose.

      • thanks, Zontee.   I’ve never crochet a garment, and was just wondering. i have limited selection in my area, most yarn is acrylic.  

  • In making the guage swatch it says 18 stitches = 4 inches. Is that 18 V- stitches? So how many do you chain?

      • I believe you’re right Zontee, but unfortunately, the pattern instructions aren’t at all clear about which stitches to use in the gauge swatch. I’ll make mine in the mesh pattern for now and see how it comes out. 

        Also, the pattern calls a 39″ circumference “large” and says there should be some positive ease to the garment when worn. Since most crochet and knit patterns call 40 to 42 inches a large, I’m guessing I’ll need to make mine XL to fit my 39″ bust measurement, but even then it won’t have positive ease according the numbers. Maybe the mesh pattern stretches. I hope we get some guidance on sizing and fitting. 

        I want to wear this sweater, not give it away. 

        • Hi! It’s up to you with sizing – the sweater doesn’t seem to need a lot of ease, just not meant to be tight-fitting, so you could probably make the XL even if it’s only a little bit of ease. Hope this helps!

  • I’m so glad this was the selection for the CAL.  I’ve had this on my to do list, downloaded the instructions and even had the the yarn bought already.  So … trying to get a jump start, I’m stuck already. :-(   The instructions after the 1st round say to turn.  If you’re working in the round, why would you turn your work?  I’m already confused, and so glad to have the CAL for clarification!!!

    • Me too. I did the chain and first round, but have about ten chains left over. I’m doing the large size.

    • The instructions you are using are for the optional start for those who prefer not to join the first round.  That is, the 1 and 2 under YOKE Notes:

      After that is Round 1 of the actual instructions.  Note that the starting chain is different for each of these options.   That may be why Kochk has chains left over.  Hope this helps.

  • I can’t wait to start tomorrow!  I chose a yarn from my stash:  a competitor’s (whoopsie!) version that is 75% recycled cotton and 25% polyester.  I hope I don’t get burned….should be ok if I actually do the swatch, which will be NOVEL for me!  

  • Good morning from Southwest Georgia! I was so excited to find out about the crochet-a-long and anxious to get started that I went out on Monday morning and got my yarn.  With the limited options at our local stores I wound up choosing some Vanna’s Choice in Seaspray.  The yoke flew by and I had joined the bottom of the sleeves before I went to bed that night.  Last night I finished it and I am so proud!  It will be a gift for a friend of mine that is moving away.  I just wanted to say that even though I have completed my own pullover that I will be watching the blog in order to learn things that I could do differently or better.  I love this pattern and will definitely be making it again!

  • Started today using Cotton Ease in Lake. I like the idea of doing this pattern in a tunic length, too- it would make a great beach cover-up!

  • Tomorrow is my birthday!!!  My yarn (my gift from my wonderful grandmother from whom I inherited my love of crochet) just got here!  For buck bang, I purchased from a discount house.  I am using a soysilk/wool/hemp mix.  It was supposed to be worsted weight… but it is DK-LIGHT which I learned is a weight class of 3, not 4.Can I still use it?  And if so, how does this change what I do? Your help is greatly appreciated.

      I made a second pullover this weekend in a yarn with a weight class of 3 (a Bamboo blend).  Due to this I also downsized my hook one size.  The finished product came out a little smaller than the one I made below in the 4 weight.  I had the first one to compare it to so that helped me.  One change I did make was to do complete 2 additional rounds on the yoke to make sure I had enough arm room.  I think you’ll find that if you’re gauge swatch is on point, you will be fine.

  • Zontee, hi there I started my row 1 and when I got to row 2,  I ended up with the same number of dc (80) for size 1X which I had in row 1,  instead of the 84 stitches I should have ended up with for  row 2.   I kind of got lost after making my V stitch do I then dc into the last leg of the V stitch from the previous row.  I hope you understand what I have done.I’m hopeful that your next blog post on thursday will address how to make the increase.
