If you’re a stash buyer, you purchase yarn because you found a yarn you simply must have and will find something to do with it later.

If you’re a project buyer, you purchase yarn for a pattern or specific project you plan to work on.

  • Definitely, a project buyer. That being said, it doesn’t mean that I won’t change my mind on what to do with it before I actual get to it. But, there is something definitely in mind when the purchase is made.

  • I am trying very hard to be a project buyer – even if the project is 3rd or 4th down the line on my list. However yesterday I found a deal I “had to have” and bought it. Now I need to find a project for it so I don’t feel guilty.

  • I’m a project buyer. If I see some wonderful yarn, I’ll say to myself, “that’s beautiful…too bad I have nothing to make with it”! That’s not to say I don’t have a stash of unused yarn at home…that’s from failed projects.

  • I’m a little of both. I will find great deals, or skeins that I “must have” and then find a project for those yarns. I will also purchase yarn specifically for projects. Having a minimal yarn budget limits the stash buying. 🙂

  • both. I try to buy with a project in mind, but will often buy something just because the colour or yarn “spoke” to me that day. if if i hear there are new buttons or fun notions I will probably rush to check them out.

  • I used to be a stash buyer but became frustrated at the amount of material piling up. So I have determined not to buy unless I have a specific project in mind and am ready to start it. As a result I am also using a lot of what I’ve stashed now. =0)

  • Mostly a project buyer. I see something I want to make and get the yarn — then end up not making it. But sometimes I just buy yard “because”. Either way – I have quite a stash!

  • I’m a little of both, but now a days, a project buyer so that I can use up my current stash since hubby says no more yarn buying…I get many of my patterns for free, however, at Lion Brand and other sources. But when he gets a job again, watch out!;)

  • I am so totally a stash buyer. If I were a project buyer I might actually have enough of a single colorway to make some of the stuff I want to make!

    I couldn’t have said it better myself! I won’t even be looking for yarn at the craft store and somehow manage to find myself in that area! More times than not I leave with a skein or two (or three.. or…. )

  • I’m definitely a project buyer. My ‘stash’ is quite small, all mostly leftovers from projects. Always buy more than you need, right? lol Occasionally, I’ll see a ‘must-have’ skein that I MUST have! I also try to stay away from LYS’s, and if I’m near a craft store, I have to put my ‘blinders’ on! 😛 Great question, it’s fun to read what others think – thx!

  • I’m a project buyer, but I’m motivated by the yarn. It’s the right yarn that makes the project stand out (for me) and want to make the project in the first place.

  • I am both I guess. I was going through my stash today, and told my family not to let me buy anymore yarn until I’ve used up some of my stash. But if I come across a great deal for some beautiful yarn, I don’t know if I can resist!

  • I am a stash buyer… I buy bulk on sale and If see something new and unusual I buy it! My husband groans when I come home with more yarn! GOT TO HAVE MORE YARN! there is always a ball of yarn with in arms reach! I have a large stash!

  • I am a project buyer, but I tend to put my stash away, and forget which yarn I purchased for which pattern, and then I find I have wound up a stash buyer.

  • I head into the store with a project in mind, but always seem to end up with extra yarn in my basket. I have two large boxes of yarn in the spare bedroom, a 1/2 finished blanket that is waiting to be unraveled and started over.

  • I’m a project buyer, but right now I still am working on my new year’s resolution not to buy more until I finish the projects I already have in my “Assigned Yarn” rubbermaid tub. I also have an “Unassigned Yarn” tub for any extra skeins I have after a project is finished. I use that for very small projects that pop up in between the larger ones.

And lately I have been buying skeins of different colors to complete small amigurumi projects and I have no where to store all these balls of colors…….. so I am sure that I do not like storing yarn for some project to come along. what if you dont have enough yarn to complete then what.? no not a good Idea.

  • mostly a stash buyer. i get a kick out of somehow wangling what skeins i have in my stash into the project i decide to go for. can you say multicolored? project buying just takes all the fun and mystery out of it. lol!

  • I am a stash buyer, have enough yarn to last a couple of years, always have some to start another project! Couldn’t do this when I was younger. Now do things for RSVP and for my family.

  • I cannot resist a bargain so I buy yarn at bargain prices and store it until I find the right project for it.

  • I used to be a stash buyer, but being a college student I’ve had to become a project buyer (grr lack of space and money). What is both great and unfortunate is that I’m only 15 minutes away from WEBS, and it’s starting to own my soul.

  • I am a project buyer most of the time, unless I see a yarn that I really can’t resist, but that does not happen too often. I do stash sock yarn though, but that does not count does it? 😉

  • I am a project buyer. I tried to be a stash buyer, I have stuff that I am not sure what to do with and I probably don’t have enough to make anything with it and that is kind of depressing. Now I am cleaning out what I have left from various projects and just working with it. If there is a new yarn I want to try I will typically go with a one skein project to get the feel for it and if I like it then it goes on my list of future possibles for the right project. Plus I have a small space and too much stuff drives me batty, and that is never a good thing.

  • Project buyer all the way! However, I have many projects piled up ready to go. I pick out my pattern, buy the yarn, then bag it with the pattern. I have a closet full of bagged projects at hand at all times. Finish one, reach into the project closet and grab something else!

  • I am new to crocheting (<<1 yr), so I don’t have a stash, which is challenging with some of the small projects that call for “a little bit of red yarn”. I end up buying an entire skein for a couple of feet of yarn and then not knowing what to do with the rest of the skein yet.
    I have started some bigger projects (sweaters) where I have been a project buyer.

  • I am both : a stash buyer, because when I find the most absolutely scrumpscious yarns I just have to have some, even if expensive, and I tend to buy enough for at least a scarf, trim for a sweater, a tiny pouch big enough for id, gloss, and funds for the evening, something useful and beautiful; a project buyer, because I will have a project in mind, and specifically purchase yarn for that project with a little extra- to make sure I have enough (yardage counts do vary) and to add to the stash count (cuz you just don’t know when a project is needed and you just don’t have time to go purchase).

  • Stash!! I have to be. There’s no good wool in Mexico where I live. Also, there’s no affordable yarn store nearby. I have to strike while the iron is hot!

  • Project, decidedly. Fewer spontaneous projects happen that way, and I’ll be insured that I have enough of a given color.

  • Guilty, Guilty, Guilty. I have so much yarn I could probably have my little store. However, I have been really good for the last two years….this has been more difficult than when I stopped smoking. I just love yarns, their colors and textures. Maybe having a shop is not a bad idea.

  • This is cracking me up. My husband is always commenting on my “stash”. I tell him I am not the only one. Now I have proof, and I can’t wait to show him. I am a Stasher and proud of it. I always buy at least six of one kind/color, so that I can make something useful (someday). I do buy for projects in mind, but haven’t gotten to the project or have forgotten what the project was. That in itself makes a great BIG stash.

  • Stash buyer, then I have to go out and find the right thing for projects because I have the worst time finding a project for the stash. I do tend to buy enough for a project but it never seems to work out and turn into one.

  • I am a on sale and clearance stash buyer only. Simply because I crochet alot for charity [crafty angels] and need a good supply on hand at all times. I store them in space bags so it does not like like so much plus it keeps it clean. That way hubby only shakes his head a little. :]

  • Its funny this question is asked @ this time. I am both .. but I do lean more on the stashing side. I go into a craft store without the intent of buying yarn and for some reason there I am … Its yarn!! So many colors and textures I’ve made many scrappy afgans using my “stash”. It adds interest to a project and its fun. How can you not love yarn?!?

  • I am a stash buyer. I love to buy yarn as if they were candy in a candy store. It’s like I got to have that color yarn, because it’s one I don’t have in my stash. Later on, I’ll find a pattern to use it for.

  • Stash all the way – can’t resist a sale – I mean, come on – $1.19 a skein???? Surely I can find a project to use that adorable yarn with!!

  • I’m a project buyer but if I find a sale on a yarn that I want to try, I will add to my stash.

  • I am both. But, I will extra of a yarn I really like and save it for a rainy day when i need s small project to do. I work in an elementary school and try to keep small projects in a bag with me to get young students interested in learning to crochet or knit.

  • I’m definitely a stash buyer! Now and then I’ll buy for a project, but I’m one who sees a yarn I like and will buy it while it’s available. Most of the time, I end up making what I thought I bought the yarn for, but sometimes even I surprise myself with what I do with it.

  • I am both. I buy some yarns because they are pretty and speak to me and some for projects.

  • Like many others I tend to be both. When I see a pattern I really love then I will hunt forever to find the just the right yarn for the job. But, if in my search I see a yarn I just HAVE to have you bet I snatch it up and then look for the the right project to use with it.

  • I am sometimes both! I like to have a pattern picked out before I buy the yarn. However, if I find a yarn I can’t live without I buy a bunch and figure out what I can make with it later. Right now I have at least 3 boxes of yarn that need to made into something. I already know what I want to make but right now it’s not on my must get done list!

  • I am a project buyer. I may not use it for the project I bought it for, but I buy it for a specific thing when I do buy yarn.

  • Can’t you just hear that yarn calling the minute you walk into a craft store? You try to ignore the call by going into other isles. You buy scrapbook paper, ribbon, stamps, punches, glue anything but yarn. Eventually the call is so loud that you look around just to make sure the other customers haven’t heard the yarn call. You saunter over to the yarn isles, determined not to be influenced by the colors, or the designs, or the feel or heaven forbid the really, really good deals. Before you know it, your cart is full. Your heart is happy. The cashier says, “You are going to be busy!” You answer, “Maybe, maybe not.” You walk out of the store feeling giddy, with a great big smile on your face. It’s only when you get home that the trouble begins, where do I put my stash? Another corner filled with yarn.
    You guessed it, I’m a stash buyer…..not only of yarn, but craft paper, stamps, ribbons….well I think you get the picture! You just never know when you might be able to use it.

  • Most of the time I’m a project buyer. But every now and then I hear some special skein of yarn saying “buy me, buy me” and I can’t resist!

  • It is so nice to find I’m not alone. 6 skeins of one color for some project in the future. Since starting a prayer shawl ministry at church, I buy for the others who may be on fixed incomes…so I’m trying projects. The colors, textures and sales are so irresistible! However, I have finished 3 shawls in the last 3 weeks because the stash needed a little trimming! Thanks for sharing!

  • STASH! Once upon a time, I would buy specific yarn for a specific project, but that was decades ago when my mind was more well organized and my budget more restricted. Now that the kids are all grown up and independent, I find that I not only have more time for knitting/crocheting, I have more free cash, even though I’m now retired. I never knew how costly having children could be!! When they were little, there was never enough money to cover all the necessities; yarn was NOT a necessity.
    I guess those years of privation are why I am now a stash buyer. If the price is right and the yarn pretty, I buy it and worry later what it will eventually become. In the meantime, it inhabits (fills to the brim!) the largest single room in the house!

  • I buy by the project. HOWEVER, the project for which I buy the yarn doesn’t always get done before the next project comes to mind. I have a stash of 20 or more projects.

  • I am a huge stash buyer, but I am also a project buyer. Just found some yarn I loved today and purchased it even though I didn’t have a project in mind…shhhh, don’t tell DH!

  • I am pretty much a yarn junkie, so I’d have to stay stash buyer. The good part is that I can always “see” what I want to make when I buy it…the bad part is that there isn’t enough time to get it all done!

  • When I am at home, I am a project buyer. However, when I travel, I take a book listing yarn stores.I always go to one at my destination and buy something wonderful, and usually a bit more expensive, and take it home as a souvenir. Whatever I make of it reminds me of the trip. I have a nifty scarf made of cashmere bought at a stall in a market in London.

  • I guess you would call me a “project stasher”! I see a pattern and then compulsively look for a yarn to do it in; then stash it away until I am ready to start it. I won’t allow myself to have more than 3 projects going – have to finish one before starting another. But I can have others waiting to be started. I always keep a list in my purse of yardage for patterns I want to do incase I run across the perfect yarn. . . . . . !

  • I am a huge stash yarner. I have three rubbermaid totes that are filled to the brim with yarn. I love to make afghans that are multi colored.

  • I’m a hybrid, but probably lean more toward stash. I buy for specific projects, particularly if it’s a question of finding yarn that will accommodate allergies or please the finicky color palate of gift recipient. But for myself I’m as likely to buy a yarn with a luscious color or feel & then figure out what I want to make from it. Unfortunately, that means there are some 20 year old yarns in my stash still waiting for inspiration. Most, however, date from a period when I was physically unable to knit. As I now keep 4 projects going at any one time, on various needle sizes, the stash is decreasing.

  • I’m a project buyer, but I might make an exception if I happened to find something really special, like homespun yarn at a festival or something like that.

  • I`m both! I always buy more yarn than I need for each project, (since I never know “exactly” how much I may need, and later use what I`ve collected
    for a throw, baby blanket, scarf, etc. When I find a clearance or a really good sale, I stock up on a yarn that I love, whether I need it or not. I`m a yarn fanatic!

  • I am a Stasher!!! I look for great sales and buy yarn. I buy yarn using the following criteria: 1) softness 2) color 3) how it would look as a scarf. How a yarn feels against your skin is of utmost importance. I live in the country and go to town about once a month and when I do… oh boy do I buy the yarn!! I also order online when there are sales. My stash is huge, HUGE. But it doesn’t take me long to whittle it down by making scarves (which I sell). I love yarn and am always working on something. I have a large extended family and always making something for a baby. I love it!

  • I am a stash buyer. I see a yarn that I like and get it thinking inspiration for it will strike me later. I also buy a lot of baby yarn. I am always making baby things and it goes fast.

  • Well Iam both.I love love my yarn .I cant pass up a sale.But I do think of something I could do with it when I get so I do get enough.plus alittle more then need sometimes but one can never have to much yarn.I do have my hugh stash of
    my stock yarn.But that should not count.Does it?

  • I’m a new knitter (2008). I bought a tub full of luscious yarn from an experienced knitter/crocheter who had to purge. So far I’ve made scarves for a few folks. So I think I’m stash?

  • Definately a stash buyer! Although I am trying to be a project buyer. I am just drawn by an invisible magnet to the yarn isle! Just love touching and feeling all the different yarns. Sometimes there is one or two I just HAVE to have! Especially if it is on sale!

  • I would definately be considered a Stash Buyer. I don’t always know what I want to knit and when I find something that is calling to me to knit it, I just dig through my stash for some yarn that will work (or adjust the pattern if needed :P). Not to say that I don’t sometimes buy yarn with a specific project in mind tho :).

  • I am a project yarn stasher. I have a ton of projects that I want to do, and will buy the yarn, but the list is so long that I rarely ever get to the end of it.

  • I’m a stash buyer, but I started out as a project buyer and quickly got out of control! I’m in the process of using up some of my yarn I have “stashed” so I can start buying again. I have new projects I want to start. I simply can’t resist some of the luscious yarns available!

  • Oh Lord, I’m a stash buyer. Have been for the last 40 years. Still have yarn from those original sprees.

    I keep yarn in garbage cans under the house, and in fact, bought a fairly ample size barn from Home Depot about 10 years ago. And guess what? Within the last hour, I hit Hobby Lobby pretty hard…they had all that discontinued stuff for $1.99, and it included lots of Lion Brand Wool Yarn! WooHoo!

  • Stasher!! Yarn Junkie!! That’s me for sure!! I can really relate to everyone’s input – can’t pass up a sale, am touchy-feely in the yarn stores, love to add to my own yarn corner!! Need more room!!

  • Both. I buy a lot of stuff for specific projects, and when I get it home I put it in big ziplocks with tags saying what pattern it’s for. But I also buy a fair amount of yarn because I loved the color (or sometimes the feel, although mostly it’s about color), or it might be a good sale on what looks like “useful” yarn. This would all explain why my stash is sort of exploding!

  • I am a project buyer, but lately I have been finding yarn at the dollar stores and then I just buy a large amount and hope I have enough for any project I come up with. I now have a yarn stash to go with my fabric stash. The one with most before she dies wins!

  • I am a project buyer, but sometimes I change my mind about the yarn for a project after I’ve bought for it. Then I develope a small stash of yarns that I eventually use for something else.
    The price of yarns requires me to use as I buy and buy as I use.

  • I’ve only been a stash buyer a couple times and realized it’s a bad idea for me. The yarn is still sitting in a drawer three years later. Therefore, I am a project buyer which still leaves me with a drawer full of yarn for unfinished or unstarted projects to look forward to!

  • I am a stash buyer. I live close to some chain stores, but FAR away from a local yarn shop. When I get to one I go crazy. I try to estimate how much I will need and then buy 1 more. I love to feel fine yarn.

  • I used to be a stash buyer. I would go to auctions and my hand would automatically jump into the air on any yarn or thread that was being shown! The bad thing about that was there was never enough of any one thing to actually do a project. So I have gotten rid of all the auction thread/yarn and only buy as needed at the store for projects. Auctions are a dangerous place for crafters!!! lolol

  • I am definitely a project buyer … going to the store with the project and color list in hand. Then, at the store, I get the intended yarn plus bunches of extra skeins in case I come across a project I must make in that same “fantastalicious” color!

  • Thank you Burma for the wonderful idea of buying when you travel and creating something that will serve as a souvenir. I am a stash buyer who can not pass up a clearance sale.

  • Oh boy, both! I have yarn from completed or failed projects, plus the yarn bought because I had to have it and thought I’d never see it again (afterall, why was it $1/skein?). “If you buy the yarn, the project will come!” That’s what the sales lady told me, very zen-like. I have no less than 3 projects with yarn waiting in the wings, and can’t wait to get to all of them.

  • i am a stash buyer. I buy yarn if there is a sale or if i just like the yarn.

  • I am 100% a STASH-aholic!! If there is a sale, I am there….new color comes out, I am there!! You could take me to a jewelry store and I would look around and say everything is beautiful and walk out….take me to a yarn shop and I become the ‘kid in a candy store’!!
    I told my hubby I want the cubbies like I see in your studio pictures…and I probably have enough yarn to fill that whole wall. My dh says he is going to send me to ‘YA’ (yarnaholics anonymous…hehe!)

  • I am a project buyer and knitter. I will not go on to another project until the current one is completed. What I do find is all the left over yarn from my projects makes me look like a stash buyer.

  • Stash usually – occasionally I’ll buy for a project – but I like to let the yarn talk to me.

  • I am a project buyer! I like to use every bit of the yarn before moving on.

  • I am a stash buyer however sometimes I buy a project. Use all extra yarn for Lap Robes.

  • I am both a stash buyer and a project buyer. My main habit is stash buyer because I can’t pass up a good deal on yarn or if find something in a beautiful color. If I am planning to make something for someone in particular, I will usually go and buy yarn for the project, if I don’t already have something on hand.

  • I am definately a stash buyer mostly. i love yarn and often find colors or materials that i have to have. I will buy and then search for a pattern to go with the yarn.

  • I am both. I will stock up when there is a close out of a color or yarn I like. I have yarn that was sold when a store went out of business. My mother gave me yarn from Woolworth’s and WT Grants.
    I will shop for a project if a person I know needs or wants something crocheted. I try not to buy yarn and have it left over so I can use what I have.

  • I go both ways. I have a closet full of stash and several projects ready to work on. I try to use my stash for charity projects but there doesn’t seem to be a bottom of the barrel. And then there are my friends who feel that since I am knitting for charity they can help me by giving me more yarn to use. I have a feeling that one of these days I may have to have a “yarn yard sale” but that will only give me more money to buy more yarn!!

  • When I lived in a larger house, a friend who downsized gave me her stash. I added to it with enthusiasm, then downsized! I recently packed up a huge box and mailed it to a friend of mine who has knitting students…I have now become a project buyer! However, I have “stashed” three kits and have just started on one. You can stash more than just the yarn! I have a pattern stash, too (lots from Lion Brand), but it fits neatly into a box under the bed.

  • I’m a bit of both – will buy or make yarn for a project, but I’m not averse to just adding to stash if the yarn is too delicious to pass by!

  • I am both… I will from time to time visit a yarn shop and if they have an area where yarn is on sale like 25 or 50% off ..I will fill my basket and then figure out what I will make…interesting projects come out of it..
    then again I will start to finish a project and end up giving it to friends or family..

  • I agree with most of those here… I am both. I go to the store with a project in mind and end up with enough yarn for 3 more projects than I intended. I think what inspires me most is not the project or the yarn by itself, but the possibility that lies within the yarn. Sometimes that motivates me to pick up yarn for a pattern and sometimes that motivates me to pick up a pattern for some yarn.

  • I’m a stash buyer…I love Lion Brand and (sometimes) find it featured at Big Lots, so I check there frequently. Sometimes I reward myself for completing dreaded errands by stopping at my local craft store ‘just to look’. Of course, then I get sucked into the vortex of colors and textures and my husband and kids start calling me, wondering if I got lost, or if I’m ‘looking at yarn’!

It will get used for smaller or spur of the moment projects like Christmas ornaments, baby things, short notice gifts, cat toys…or something from my huge pattern stash.     In truth, it’s both. I will add to my stash if I find a sale or wonderful yarn that speaks to me, but my eyes are bigger than my time will allow, so I have quite a stash.

    I also buy for projects, but that doesn’t mean I make everything I originally thought I’d make. Sometimes that’s because I don’t have time, or something else catches my fancy or needs.

    I really need to work down my stash. I have 3 projects underway right now, one is detailed and requires close attention, one is what I call a TV project in that it’s kinda mindless and can be done while watching The Mentalist, and then there is a class or CAL project. I’m reducing my stash with two of these, but bought new yarn for my mindless project, an afghan.

  • I too am a stash buyer. I now have a room dedicated to my passion/obsession! There’s just something about all those colors and textures in the room with me – it makes me HAPPY!

  • I was a stash buyer. When I was living in NE and would go to auctions I would buy any yarn or thread that came up. But now I going for the project. I always buy extra so I can add to my stash of course!

  • I am both. If a yarn is on sale I’ll buy it.
    I will go to the second hand stores looking for yarn to add to my stash! I will buy cheap afghans at these places to unravel to add to my stash! I make stash blankets out of all of it. I give them to family members, and I also make stash blankets for cats and dogs, made out of various weights, which they love! I love planning the colors. I am always looking for a stash to buy! I also buy quite a bit for certain projects too. But, I love having a variety of yarn on hand to save a trip to the store. I know where all my yarn is, and it is sorted by colors and weight, and kept in plastic storage tubs.
    It’s all good stuff!

  • Mostly project buyer. I have something in mind when I shop for yarn. But….. once I’m in the shop there is so much temptation sometimes I’ll give in and get something I have no idea what I’ll do with. Still mostly for projects.

  • I am a huge stash buyer, it is actually turning into a hoarding situation. . . I’ve got a couple of projects that I’m working on that I bought specific yarns for, too.

  • I used to be a project buyer but am now completely a stash buyer! And as Naomi above stated…it is almost becoming a hoarding issue! Not quite yet, I guess, since it is contained to one 8 foot closet in my office!

  • Stash buyer for sure. It is a rare occasion that I buy yarn for a specific project. I have SO much yarn in my stash that it is sickening, but it always seems like there is a yarn out there that I don’t have in a specific fiber, weight, color..ect. So when I find that yarn I don’t have I MUST buy it. And as I type I am staring at my stash wondering what I should make with them…I can’t tell if I’m in a knitting or crocheting mood…hmmm

  • I’m a project buyer, but I need to be a statch buyer. I love to go to wal-mart or handcocks or Hobbie Lobby andjust look at the yarn and decide what I want to make.

    i go to the store having something in mind of what i want.
    once i get there i sometimes might just get carried away from the beautiful colors
    the main things i love to craft is amigurumi.
