How To Crochet A Granny Square Using Crayola Cake Yarn

Another granny square!

This on I’ve worked in Crayola Cakes “Timberwolf” colorway. It transitions from dark charcoal grey through pale silver grey. I made the square rather large. My idea was that this way you would see a decent amount of the color transition in one square. One Crayola Cake will make 2 of these squares. With each square measuring about 10″ x 10″ you can create a 40″ x 40″ baby blankie by combining 16 squares. To do this you would need 8 Crayola Cakes.

You’ll see in the photos that I had a little “help” on this square.

Materials

• Crayola Cake yarn in Timberwolf
• H/5mm crochet hook

The Granny Square

To begin, chain 6, join with sl st to form rnd

Rnd 1: ch 3 (counts as first dc), 15 dc into center of ring, join with sl st to top of beg ch – 16 dc

Rnd 2: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in same space, 2 dc in each st around, join with a sl st to top of beg ch – 32 dc

Rnd 3: ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc3tog in next st, ch 1, *dc in next st, dc3tog in next st, ch 1; rep from * another 14 times, join with a sli st to top of beg ch – 32 sts

Rnd 4: ch 1, sc in first st, *ch 3, sc in next dc; rep from * another 14 times, ch 3, join with a sl st to first sc – 16 sc

Rnd 5: sl st in first ch space, ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in same ch sp, ch 1, *3 dc in next ch sp, ch 1; rep from * another 14 times, join with a sl st to top of beg ch – 48 dc

Rnd 6: sl st in next 2 sts, sl st in ch sp, ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in same sp, ch 1, [3 dc in next sp, ch 1] twice, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next sp to form corner, *ch 1, [3 dc in next sp, ch 1] 3 times, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next space; rep from * twice more ending last rep by working a hdc in top of first ch 3 – 60 dc

Rnd 7: ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in same sp, [ch 1, 3 dc in next sp] 3 times, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next st, *ch 1, [3 dc in next st, ch 1] 4 times, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next st; rep from * twice more ending last rep by working a hdc in top of first ch 3 – 72 dc

Rnd 8: ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in same sp, [ch 1, 3 dc in next sp] 4 times, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next st, *ch 1, [3 dc in next st, ch 1] 5 times, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next st; rep from * twice more ending last rep by working a hdc in top of first ch 3 – 84 dc

You may continue working rnds until square is your desired size by repeating rnd 8 and increasing the number of times you work the [3 dc in next st, ch 1] portion on each rnd. For example, on rnd 9 you would work [3 dc in next st, ch 1] 6 times. On rnd 10 you would work [3 dc in next st, ch 1] 7 times.

Each rnd increases the stitch count by 12 dc sts.

Final Rnd: ch 3 (counts as first dc), work 1 dc in each stitch (including ch spaces) and work (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in each ch-3 corner space), finish rnd by joining with a sl st to top of beg ch – st count varies depending on number of rnds worked.

Special Stitches

DC3TOG: (yo, insert hook through st and pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops) 3 times, yo and pull through all 4 loops on hook.
