Andrea shows how versatile crochet can get with crochet checks today!
Over the last two weeks, we’ve shared with you some of the scarves we’ve been making for our Hat & Scarf Charity Drive at the Lion Brand Yarn Studio. Today, we continue with 8 days of scarves. Whether you’re making them as gifts or for charity, come back from now until Thanksgiving for inspiration & patterns for easy scarves from the Studio’s staff.
Andrea’s Crochet Checks (shown in Vanna’s Choice Burgundy)
Ch 20
Row 1: *(Sc tbl) twice, (sc tfl) twice, repeat from * to end, chain 1 turn
Row 2: *(Sc tfl) twice, (sc tbl) twice, repeat from * to end, chain 1 turn
Repeat rows 1 & 2 for body of scarf.
Bind off and weave in ends.
*As with all of our scarf patterns shown, we only used one ball for our scarves, but you can use two and make them as long or short as you wish. Vanna’s Choice’s recommended hook size is J-10; its recommended needle size is US9.

What is “tbl” and “tfl”
Patty says: Through Back Loop, and Through Front Loop. Anytime you see an abbreviation you don’t recognize you can go to our Learning Center & click on abbreviation, then click on tbl and tfl.
Carol
I’ve tried several of the lovely scarf patterns and am always stymied when it comes to deciding in what chain/stitch to begin a row (most patterns say 1st/2nd chain/stitch from hook, etc.) Are there some guidelines elsewhere that would help me figure this out?
Zontee says: Hi Carol, unless otherwise noted, you need 1 chain for the height of a single crochet, 2 for the height of a half double crochet, and 3 for the height of a double crochet. You can see diagrams at the LionBrand.com Learning Center by clicking here.
Sandra
I agree that these instructions are not very clear. Is the sc tbl twice in the same loop or the first two loops?
Zontee says: Hi Sandra, unless otherwise noted, directions are always for individual stitches. So in this case, sc tbl in one stitch, then the next stitch, sc tfl in the third and the fourth stitches.

I am trying to do this pattern. I don’t understand how i can crochet in the back and front loops when I only chained 20. Can someone help please?
Thanks
Patty says: It’s chain 20 because it begins with a tbl stitch, which in a chain is the bottom of the chain. However, if you have trouble with that, you can always Ch21, do one row of regular sc, and then begin the pattern. As with all sc patterns, remember that each row would end with a single turning chain. That is standard unless otherwise noted. I have edited the pattern to include the standard turning chain.

Thanks!

What type of yarn is used for the Cheery Crocket Checks scarf?
lionbrand
Hi Margaret, Danielle here – the yarn in the picture is Vanna’s Choice Burgundy – here’s the link: http://www.lionbrand.com/6030/PictPage/1922242371.html

I am using Wool Ease for this scarf. Should I use a smaller hook?
