Fly me to the moon, and let me knit/crochet among the stars…

Exactly fourty-seven years ago, the Apollo 11 touched down on the moon, carrying astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong. Six hours after landing, Neil Armstrong famously stepped onto the crater-laden surface and uttered his legendary phrase about small steps and giant leaps.

Tin-foil-hat-wearing people will tell you the landing was staged and fabricated out of movie magic. Others will tell you the moon is made out of cheese! Yeah right!

We are here to tell you the truth… it’s made out of YARN!

Up first, we have a wonderful crocheted moon pillow by Joke Decorte, which is just itching to receive a big lunar hug! The perfect addition to any child’s bedroom or to make as a gift, we recommend using Vanna’s Choice in mustard, black, white, and charcoal gray. You can purchase the pattern on Ravelry.

This Rocketship Beanie turns your headmelon into the moon! Created by The Sequin Turtle as part of a project that benefited less fortunate school children in Nasheville, the pattern is available for free. If you want to work it up in a hurry, check out our Wool-Ease Thick and Quick. I’ve never seen a rocket ship with green accents, so I’d say that you’ll want to make your own color choices here. But who can resist colors like “constellation” and “starlight” for a project like this?

Now here’s a funky rocket! If you ask me, this incredibly fun bobble chart by Kari Philpott is perfect for our 24/7 cotton or Kitchen Cotton yarns. Pick a color, any color, grab the free pattern, and go intergalactic!

And now on to some ideas that will truly satisfy the space jockeys out there…

Dig this fantastic, hyper-accurate take on the Saturn V Rocket by Emily Premise-Conclusion. You’ll want Vanna’s Choice in white and black, with a little navy (or colonial blue) and scarlet for the accents!

And on to the show stopper… another creation by the incredibly talented Ms. Premise-Conclusion. The mother of all NASA geekery… THE SPACE SHUTTLE!

Here, we’re looking at the same white, black, navy and red coloring as the Saturn V rocket, but we’re going to want to add terracotta and honey or mustard for the big rocket!
