Hat Size Guide: Preemies Through Adults

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Hats make great gift projects, however, knowing what size circumference is right for your recipient can get a little confusing. The following hat size guide chart offers some guidelines. Do keep in mind that this serves as a reference, but every person is unique.

Hat Size Guide

Circumference measurement is “actual size.” The finished circumference of your hat should be at 2-4″ smaller (negative ease) than the actual head circumference. How much negative ease depends on the stitch and yarn used for your hat. Very stretchy yarn/stitch pairings (i.e. wool worked in 2×2 ribbing) should have a larger amount of negative ease.

  • The size guide is just a starting point, but you are right. An XL size could be helpful.

  • It would be helpful! However, the blog doesn’t have PDF hosting capability.
If you right-click you can use “save image as”. If you have a Mac you can drag and drop the image onto your desktop.

    • I work from an Android tablet which does not have a right click function. I could go to my Windows desktop and copy and paste, but that hardly seems worth the effort to fire it up for one table. I was able to download in .pdf format using PrintFriendly. You might want to investigate adding this button from the PrintFriendly website.

  • Knitting hats for 2 12 – 14 yr old girls. Using two strands of double knit yarn – one with sparkles .Does thickness of yarn affect the size the hats will end up being ? Would rather slightly bigger than too snug.

  • Very handy – I was able to “SAVE” on one of my Pinterest boards.
