It’s recently come to my attention that Homespun® yarn might be underrated. Or at least I personally have been guilty of not giving it the attention it deserves. Maybe you’re ahead of me and already realize its beauty and potential.
This yarn has been around for a while and runs the risk of being passed over for the shiny, new, and different yarns of the moment. However, the fact that it has been around for years says something. It has staying power. And there are reasons for that.
The unique texture of the yarn gives simple garter and stockinette stitch a depth that you won’t get from a smooth plied yarn. This makes it perfect for beginners who want projects that are simple, but look more complex. Homespun® is forgiving. Any mistakes won’t pop.
Note: this is a good yarn for crafters that have a project or two under their belt already. The same texture that allows for simplicity in stitch also can make it a difficult yarn to learn on.
When my mom and I taught my Dad to crochet Homespun®, and Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick®, were his go-to yarns. Fast, fun, functional. Homespun® makes satisfying looking pieces without much effort. Cast on (or chain) and go.
With Homespun® yarn less is more. Stick with simple shapes and stitch patterns to let this yarn shine to its full potential. A good example? The 8-Hour Throw (below) has been a fan favorite for years. Simple and quick with interesting depth thanks to the color and feel of this special yarn.

Since these were all designed specifically for this unique yarn, you are guaranteed to find the perfect pattern/yarn pairing. Some, like the Cozy pullover and Ulla top featured below, pair two yarns together and thus add even more depth to this amazingly textured yarn.

Homespun is my favorite for the many, many prayer shawls I’ve made the last 15 years. Only disappointment is some of the colors that have been discontinued. Will take this yarn over any others. Thank you for the beauty and luxurious feel.

Everyone I know hates the Homespun yarn because it’s very splitty, hard to unravel, due to its sticking to itself and creating knots. When you crochet with it, the loops are hard to see, and when knitting, it splits no matter how careful you are. I now refuse to use it, due to the many frustrations I’ve experienced.

I love the Homespun yarn for shawls. Close stitches make heacy, warm shawls and more open patterns make open pretty shawls. Going to try a blanket next. Tudor is my all time fave color.

I have a bag full of the homespun. Have tried to crochet a blanket with it several times. I find it very hard to work with, have to search for each stitch before I can place the hook. So sorry I spent so much money for something I can’t use.

Homespun Yarn is my absolute favorite… I am making a jacket right now. Also a blanket with two wonderful colors that I reporposed… yesterday from a large cape, cowl that I no lnger liked… and yes its a little tough to get unravelled at first… pull to the left of the stitch… got 5 balls out of that… oh yes its going to make a beautiful blanket… and yes I will post.

I like Homespun yarn. It is soft, has pretty color blends. Yes, it is hard to see stitches already made, but I get around that by using my fingertips to find the space for the next stitch. That has worked for me with simple patterns with single and double stitches. I even used it for crossed double stitches. However, I would not use this yarn for a complex pattern.

Agreed, Homespun can be difficult to work with, but it produces a soft, lustrous fabric that is super warm and wears like iron. it ‘s my grown kids favorite for baby blanks because it washes and dries beautifully Also a favorite for prayer shawls and adult blankets. My complaint is, my favorite colors keep disappearing. I need one more skein of Renaissance to finish a prayer shawl…
