Our CAL host will be Heather, a great freelance designer and teacher, who you might remember from the previous knit-along of the Cable Luxe Tunic. Please say hello and introduce yourself!

Heatherโ€™s first post will be next Thursday, but in the meantime, go get your supplies, make your gauge swatch, download and/or print the pattern (available for FREE only until March 23rd ESPECIALLY for CAL participants), and get ready to crochet with us!

No need to sign up or anything! Just follow along with the blog, and leave comments here, chat on our Ravelry group, or on our Flickr group. We’ll be working through April, but you can work at your own pace and follow along!

We look forward to having you join us!

  • tHIS LOOKS LIKE A CHALLENGE BUT i AM UP FOR A CHALLENGE.

  • looking forward to another CAL, I am doing so many projects I still may be working on this one by the time everyone is done (same thing happened with last CAL) but I’ll do it and hopefully be dilligent enough to have for the next fall.

  • Yes! I’m so excited we are doing this pattern! Now, what color, what color? Thank you Lion Brand Yarns!

  • This is my first CAL. I’m more confident in completing the jacket than following along in the blogs. This is the one I voted for. What a great thing to take ourminds off the cold weather here in the east.

  • Can’t wait! I think I’ll do wool and cotton (one strand of each!) Joined the ravelry group! I just love the shaping pf this jacket!

  • This will be my first CAL-can’t wait to start. I’m going to go and pick out my supplies and try to start my gauge. I would like to change to something that is more cotton than the wool blend in the pattern. Any suggestion to which one I should buy? I want to keep the same colors. I love the cocoa and charcoal effect.

  • Hi! This is my second Cal, and can wait to get started.

  • This is my first crochet along, and I can’t wait to get started. The pattern is the first sweater I am making, though I have plenty of experience with scarves and afghans.

  • I’m teaching myself to crochet and this will be my 1st crochet a long. Can’t wait to start it. I love the look of this jacket.

  • I’m ready to get started, but with all the projects I’ve got going right now, I’ll probably finish last!

  • Hello everyone, I’ve never done anything like this CAL before but it looks like fun! My yarns and supplies are on order from the website. I’m for winter white! Been crocheting since the 70s, man!

  • Lenore
Winter white is going to be beautifull! The 70’s, hmmm, I have been at it since the 62. LOL

  • I am real excited about this project. Love the brown/black colors, just want something lighter in weight, not wool.

Zontee says: Hi Pam, glad you’re excited about the project. If you want to do this project in a more spring-friendly yarn, consider two strands of Cotton-Ease held together, instead of the Lion Wool/Lion Cashmere Blend recommended. There are some great browns and grays in Cotton-Ease too. Heather will talk more about substituting yarns in her first post on Thursday.

  • My new friends, I’ve been reading the pattern and am confused about the stitch we’ll be using. Can you direct me to a photo or diagram of the sc2tog? I feel foolish asking this question, but it’s been a long time since I’ve done a crochet project!! Please tell me there are no stupid questions…!

Heather says: “Hi, Lenore: The sc2tog is explained under the section of the pattern entitled “Stitch Explanation”. All you do, is insert your hook into the 1st stitch and bring loop through, then do the same with the next stitch (you will have 3 loops on your hook), then yarn over your hook and bring through all 3 loops (there will just be one loop left on your hook). Hope this helps and good luck swatching!

  • I’ve been wanting a new jacket. The texture for this one is just what I need. This is going to be great!

  • This is my first CAL. Looking forward to starting this project. I’ll have to pick colours tomorrow and make sure I have the right size crochet hooks.

  • Heather, I read those instructions in the “Stitch Explanation” and was confused. But your explanation above is very, very helpful. I can do this!! Thanks a bunch.

  • I’m not sure I’m up for this as I’m a total newbie–but I can try at least, so I’m in… yea!

  • I have never joined a CAL and have never crocheted clothing–I am excited about both… I want to make it for a spring/summer jacket, worried about wool being too hot. Those of you thinking of making it out of something lighter, let us know what you choose.

  • Kelli
You are up for this, you can do this and it’s going to be beautifull!!!

  • Hi I would love to participate but as I am in India and have no access to pure wool can I substitute my local yarn for this? I really love the shaping of this jacket!

Zontee says: Hi Vims, yes, of course you can substitute yarns into this pattern. Just make sure that when you do, you test your gauge so that your project comes out the right size. Heather will talk more about substituting yarns in her first post this Thursday.

  • I am so excited to start this project! I’m making the cowl neck sweater right now and should be finished by this week. As soon as i’m done I will test my hand at this!

    1 question:

I want to subsitute the colors but i’m thinking black and a lime green. I’m wondering if those two colors would compliment each other or should I just stick colors of the same or similar hue? I could use hunter green instead……

  • This is the first time I’ll participate in a CAL–should be fun! The jacket is great, and I’m looking forward to finishing something in a timely manner, for a change. I’m thinking of substituting silver and pearl grey yarn.

  • Nicole
Thats the beauty of making your own clothing. It is what you like that matters. Black goes with anything so go and hold the 2 colors together. If you love it, then it works!
I have switched over to rh grande[new one] in cranberry. The gauge works and the color is nice for fall/winter. And since its mine I added 2 1/2 inches before the first decrease because I like it longer!

  • Hi! I just love this jacket and I’m so glad it won for the CAL! I have to go buy my yarn this weekend. I’m thinking about using two strands of wool. While I’d love to use the cashmere blend the pattern calls for, I just can’t swing the cost right now.

  • Nervous about my first crochet project. (I’m a great knitter, though.) Crochet has always confused me. I don’t know whether I’m to crochet into the hole created by the stitch or into the top two strands of the stitch. I’ve heard both ways.

Zontee says: Hi Lynn, you crochet into the two strands at the top of the stitch UNLESS otherwise noted in a pattern. For more help, click here for our step-by-step illustrated crochet instructions or feel free to write into our pattern support team at support@lionbrand.com.

  • I’m in for this one! Though I am hoping to substitute yarn already in my stash. My hubby has been gathering all my yarn in one place and I think he thinks I should be embarrassed by it all but I’m not! But I do agree that I should start making stuff with it all instead of buying new for a while. So I’ll be looking forward to Thursday’s post! Think I’ll be following along on ravelry after this post.

    Melissa

  • I’ll try! The last garment I crocheted was in the 70s, so I’ll try my hand at this one! I’ve made hundreds of crocheted baby afghans… all in Homespun!

  • This will be my first CAL and I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve been crocheting since the 60’s (and I’m only 29. Ha! I wish), but have always done afghans, baby booties, etc. Never any clothing for me, so this will be fun! I, too, will want to make this in something suitable for Spring and cooler summer nights at the beach. The only down-side I see to this is…..trying to choose the colors. I know I’ll fall in love with several of them. Can you have 3 or 4 CAL of the same item going at once? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Do ya think I could make this long sleeved just buy keeping going with the final number of stitches. I am 65 and haven’t made garments in many years. Was going to go to the store and get yarn for a prayer shawl for me and a friend that has cancer will buy yarn for this project and join in. Has anyone seen a pattern for a prayer shawl for a man – they get cancer to and get very cold in the hospitals.

    Thank you

  • This is my first CAL project and I can’t wait to get started. This jacket looks like lots of fun!

  • I’m excited! I’m a longtime crocheter, but have never done a CAL, sounds like fun! The jacket looks great!

  • This is great! It’s beautiful! I’m looking forward to CAL for the first time.

  • On the question of the prayer shawl, the pattern is unisex, our knitting guild has just made them in manish colors, greys, brown, rusts, etc. This sounds like so much fun, i haven’t made anything for myself either and would love to try it.Love reading the comments.

  • This will be my first CAL and I am really looking forward to making this as I have only made baby clothes in the 12months that I have been crocheting.

  • Looks like a nice project. I’m already up to my ears in yarn/projects but hey whats one more!

  • Hello,

this is my first crochet-along. I hope I will not be lost.

  • I am excited – I have been crocheting for a few years making afghans, hats, scarves, and one piece cardigans for my daughter. I am really looking forward to making an actual piece of clothing for an adult! I am pretty sure I will be switching to the Vanna’s Choice yarns – much cheaper!! Thanks!

  • This is my first crochet-along! What fun! I’m excited about the pattern and the group. I have been crocheting and knitting for many years, but I haven’t really challenged myself. I’m ready!

  • I am in! I am so nervous and excited all at the same time. This project is a lot bigger than any I have ever tackled, but I think having you all to do this with me, will make it much easier. I have made tons of afghans and scarves, even a few hats but reading these instructions I started to get bleary eyed! Baby steps!!!! I am only reading the beginning part and trying to pick out my yarns. I want to do a lighter weight and brighter more spring colors but I don’t know which yarn or colors. I am looking forward to seeing what everyone picks!

  • I think I will give this a try. I have only done beginning projects. Hope I can make it through ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Like so many others, this is my first CAL. this is also my first attempt to make something other than an afghan/blanket, scarf, or filet crochet.

This will be a challenge, but I think it’ll be very fun. Especially with all the support!

  • Finally something modern and in plus siZe. Can hardly wait.

  • Hey birgit.1040 ,

Thanks for the information! I’ve finally decided to go with a chocolate brown and fushia color. I can imagine the colors blending well in my head but i’ll find out on friday when I actually go to the store to buy my yarn! ****crosses fingers****

  • What color? Spring green, of course!
    How nice!
    How Audrey Hepburn-esque!

  • This looks wonderful. However I can never gauge anyghing and things always look strange with missed stiches.
Can this be done on a long board knifty knitter?

  • Hi…this is my first CAL. I had purchased this pattern in the fall, so I was excited to see it and voted for it. I think I might be challenged to actually do it with a support group! Thanks!

  • I’m in — this is my first try at clothing in about 30 years, so I hope I don’t get too lost. I am confused as to why we have twice as much of one color as the other since we are using a two string crochet stitch.

Zontee says: Hi Jane, yes, there are twice as many balls of one type of yarn as the other, but this is because the yardage per ball of Lion Wool and Lion Cashmere blend are DIFFERENT. When substituting yarn into a pattern, you FIRST need to calculate the amount of yarn needed. If you take a look at Heather’s first post, she gifts approximate yardage for each size. Hope that helps!

  • This is my first CAL too, and I’m not quite sure how it works, but I’m in! I love the jacket pattern but I also will be going for the less expensive yarns. Will have to wait until I get to the store to decide what colors to use.

  • I want to make this jacket with a yarn that can be worn in Florida. Wool and Cashmere are too hot. Could I use a cotton yarn?

Zontee says: Hi Karen, yes, you may. Try our Lion Organic Cotton, Lion Cotton, or Cotton-Ease for some great options for warm-weather substitutions. See Heather’s new post for more options and recommendations.

  • I need help trying to figure out what size to make it in. I’m a 37″ bust. The small is a 34″ and the medium is 40 1/2″. I like my clothes a little snug but not tight, so I was thinking about making a small and hoping that the yarn stretches a little. I feel like the medium is going to be a little too big for what i’m looking for, I know have to take into account that I will have a shirt underneath but i’m still not sure what size to make!!

    HELP!!!

  • I’ll give it a try too! I need something to keep my hands busy and I’m tire of afghans. Wish me luck!

  • Just got back into crochet and looking forward to this CAL! TY for the pattern ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I’m in. But since this is the first garment I will have attempted since the late 1960’s – early 1970’s, I would prefer to first crochet it in less costly yarns. If I can get through the first one successfully (and I suspectd I will), then I might be willing to pay the price of the wool and cashmere to create another before next winter.

  • I am excited to try this. I have had no luck in making adult clothes before and I love this pattern!

  • This looks like a lot of fun! I’ve never done a CAL before, but no time like the present to start!

  • This is my first CAL and I’m so excited that I voted for this pattern. I’m going to hunt for the cheaper yarn tomorrow as I’ve never made clothing and would hate to think of spending near to $100 and letting it sit… like so many of my other WIPs. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thanks for the comments and helpful hints, Zontee and Heather.

  • Couldn’t help but notice the tab on this beauty is going to be around $120, for the *smallest* size. If you need the largest size, plan on a figure north of $170. Youch. Lovely, but too rich for my blood. How about a suggestion on a less expensive yarn. Thanks!

Zontee says: Hi Kristin, in Heather’s new post you will see that she is working with Vanna’s Choice and Vanna’s Glamour held together for a much more affordable version of this jacket that has a little extra shimmer.

  • I really like this pattern and am going to use some yarn my daughter sent me from Germany. Can’t wait to test the guage to make sure it works. The colors are rich & the pattern perfect for Seattle weather.

  • First time I’ve done a crochet a long. Hope I can keep up! I will be making this for my sister, she’ll just love it!

  • Looking foward to making this jacket –its my first cal and I’ll be making it in vanna’s choice since I’m alergic to wool projects. look foward to meeting everyone- ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I love this pattern but have never crocheted clothing and NEVER been involved in a CAL. I am looking forward to the blogs to keep me going in the right direction. I too would like to substitute yarn to a cotton. Thanks for this learning opportunity!

  • this is my first time in doing this sort of thing I am looking forward to it.Great pattern

  • Hi!! This is my first CAL and I’m so excited. I’ll be looking forward to hearing lots of tips and suggestions, especially about substituting various yarns.
    Thanks!!

  • I have been crocheting for about 30 years…. and have mostly taught myself to read directions. I have never done a CAL but I am excited to try this! Can’t wait to pick out yarns!! I think I’ll use Vanna’s yarns.

  • I’d like to try this, but I have a few questions: Is this too difficult for a beginner? How much time should I plan on carving out each day/week? And, like the frugal women before me, I’d like a suggestion on a less expensive yarn.

    Thanks!

  • Me too…I’ve never done this sort of thing let alone done a gauge swatch…I mean I crochet but always fudge it…no wonder why nothing fits :^D

Anyway, I too would like to use a lighter yarn if possible then try later with the wool and cashmere. Keep us posted for that pattern using an alternate yarn!
    Thanks and can’t wait!

  • I’ve never done aCAL. New baby on the way, but I’m willing to give it a try!

  • Looks like fun. I will give it a try.
Also looking for Florida type yarn.

  • This is the one I voted for! I too am looking to make this in a “cooler” yarn. I am allergic to wool and it doesn’t get cold enough down here in Atlanta to wear much of it! Looking forward to Heather’s post on Thursday about alternate yarns!

  • Thanks for sharing all your great ideas. Your website is great as well as the podcasts. I hope to visit your studio in NYC someday. Picking out the yarn for the CAL is the hardiest!!!!

  • This looks like fun! I think I can finish it in time for fall. I love the look of Teal and Cream.

  • This looks like a lot of fun and I’m all into jackets right now. Now to look for yarn…I am thinking cotton.

  • This will be my first CAL. I’ve made a lot of afghans and baby items but I don’t remember making anything for myself. I’ve ordered dark and light rose heather Wool-Ease (it’s cheaper than Wool/Cashmere) and am anxiously waiting for it to arrive so I can make a swatch to check my gauge. Then I hope to really keep on top of this project and maybe still use it yet this season here in Michigan.

  • This is my first CAL. The jacket looks warm and I am looking to increase my knowledge.

  • This is my first CAL, also. I have crocheted off and on for a lot of years and am looking forward to this project. I am hoping this will keep me on line and get the project done in a timely fashion.

  • My first CAL and I’m all set for it, just need to choose the yarn and figure out the hooksize ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s quite exciting to see how many people will be doing this.

  • I’m going to try the CAL. I have only ever made scarves, a couple of little amiguri toys for the cats, and newborn beanies Im a bit scared of something big like this. But All the posters seem very helpful or are new like me, so here goes!!!!

I would prefer to make the jacket with lighter material though. Can you mix the cotton ease with the cashmere?????

  • Hi I never did a crochet along. I have never made adult size clothes . This will be great.

  • this is for Melissa with the “stash” of yarn, You made me laugh, and now I don’t feel so alone LOL My husband thinks Im nuts too I have so much yarn, and sometimes when I buy some more I SNEAK it in.(isnt that crazy!!) hahah but I LOVE the colors and textures and love to see how they look with different stitches etc. Just need to finish the projects LOL. don’t feel too guilty : ) this CAL should be fun.

  • This will be my first CAL. I’m still fairly new to crochet so I hope this isn’t to advanced for me but I’m definately ready to give it a try. Now I just have to decide on a yarn weight and colors.

  • Great sweater, I think my Grandaughters will love this one. Can’t wait to see the substitution blog, as I have a bunch of yarn also.

  • This will be my first time and hope to be able to follow and not get lost! I live in Florida so I would like to make it a little lighter. Do you have any suggestions? I am really excited about this project!

  • I’m so excited about this. My first CAL too, though I’ve been crocheting for almost 20 years. Also substituting a different yarn – I think my hubby would strangle me if I went out and bought more yarn. We just moved, so I have to go dig my yarn out of boxes for Thursday. Wish me luck! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I’ve crocheted for years, but this is my first CAL too! I love this pattern and am eager to get started.

  • OH, this is going to be FUN!!!

  • This jacket is so cute! Looking forward to my first big clothing project. Not sure what yarn I want to use yet. This is gonna be fun! =)

  • This will be my first CAL. I voted for this pattern so I’m excited that it was the one chosen! I’m going to do lime green for spring. I was thinking of using Cotton Ease in Lime and Homespun in Apple Green, but I’m not sure if the yarn will be too thick. I’m going to make a swatch soon and see how it works.

  • I’m so excited that this sweater won! I have been in love with the pattern since I first saw it but somehow it never works its way to the top of the list…I’ve been focusing on knitting projects and have been thinking lately how much I’d love to do a crochet project–here’s my excuse!

Note to Lauren: Homespun will probably be too heavy mixed with the Cotton Ease. I’ve done a couple of projects with it and it doesn’t always mix well (although it does come in great colors!)

  • Have never participated in a CA; think it will be fun as well as helpful. Can hardly wait. So I won’t. Like the suggestion of substituting two strands of cotton ease for the wool.

  • This jacket looks so cute! I can’t wait to crochet it for my daughter.

  • I’m in. This is my second CAL, and I’m still working on the Cable Luxe Tunic KAL, but this will probably get finished first.

  • I am so looking forward to starting this. This will be my first crochet a long. However, it is a perfect start for me. I am just starting to get into making clothes (form fitting) so I will have a great place to ask necessary questions as I go.

    Thanks for the opportunity.

  • I’ve never been involved in a CAL either, but this looks like fun. Why not?

  • This is my first CAL.
I’m very excited to get started and am looking forward to Thursday’s first post.
I started crocheting when I was 8. That was in ’69.

  • This is my first CAL but I have been crocheting clothes for over 16 years now. I can’t wait to see what I can do with this pattern and some different yarns that I already have.

  • This is my first CAL…this looks like fun. Have to go get my supplies…I am so ready for this.

  • ke so many of you I will have to substitute for a less expensive alternative yarn. PLUS wool is soooo itchy!!!
I looked over the suggested substitution of Vannas Glamour. It is a rated at a 2 weight. How will that work????

I want to start buying my yarn this week so need some suggestions on how much to buy in both Vannas Choice & Vannas Glamour.

Zontee says: Hi Lynn, Heather is holding a strand of Vanna’s Choice (a category 4, worsted weight yarn that’s slightly thicker) and Vanna’s Glamour (a category 2, sport-weight yarn) instead of the two slightly thinner worsted weight yarns recommended in the pattern. As she talks about in her latest post, she tests the gauge of her new yarns to make sure that together they work up to the recommended gauge, and they do, which means that she will get the right size project with these yarns. You could alternately use a category 6 yarn instead of two strands of category 4 yarn, if you prefer to use only one color for this project. As Heather says in her post, the great thing about this project is that there are so many different combinations of yarn that will work!

  • This will be my first CAL. Can’t wait to get started.

  • I’m thinking hot pink and pale green cotton…

  • Well, I’ll give it a try, I’m more of a knitter for things to wear (meaning I only crochet amigurumis) but I’ll try to keep up with the rest of you X)

  • This is my first CAL here and I love the jacket. It will definitely be for late fall/winter for me because it’s already air conditioning weather here in Atlanta. I am doing another CAL with a CGOA club and working on lots of baby things for upcoming twins in my family, but I’ll get this done eventualy.

  • I’ve crocheted for kids, grandkids, and even my husband–now it’s time for me. This is one of the best-looking garments I’ve seen in a long time. Fortunately, an hour’s commute (each way) should provide time to do the work.

  • I am so excited! I love this jacket and this will be my first CAL. I hope to get my friend to do it with me. She is the one that got my crocheting again after a long freeze. Can’t wait to get started!

  • I voted for this pattern and although I have several knit projects in progress, I am sorely tempted to give in, select the yarn and crochet along. I too have crocheted for many years, but generally knit rather than crochet sweaters, jackets, skirts and dresses. I am really eager to attempt this lovey jacket. Living in So. Calif. I now also have to decide what type of yarn to use. I have a bamboo blend – will that work?

  • i’ve decided i’m going to join you all on this great project. i’ve just spent the last hour trying to decide what color scheme to try. i’m thinking a lighter white/taupe kind of mix since i already have a couple of darker jackets. i also am allergic to wool, so i’d love to hear other yarn ideas. anyone know what the “Recycled Cotton” is like? (i was thinking of mixing it with Vanna’s Choice.) would it be too stiff for this kind of project? i liked a couple of the colors i saw on-line. =)

  • I was excited to learn the Moderne Jacket won — I love the look! This is my first CAL. I’ve taken a couple of beginner crochet classes at JoAnn’s and hope I won’t get lost along the way. I’m a little tired of knitting scarves. With the warmer weather approaching, I’m looking forward to making this in a lighter weight. Now . . . to raid my stash to see if I have anything appropriate.

  • I really like the looks of this jacket. Have been crocheting for a long time, mainly afghans, blankets, filet…stuff that does not require a guage. This will be a challenge. Looking forward to Thurday and different yarns as would like something for spring/summer. Sounds like there might be several options… Looks like I will be picking up some yarn this weekend.

  • I think I am in. I have lots of unfinished WIP’s. The last time i made an adult crocheted item of clothing, it was for a college boyfriend. Anybody remember the granny square crochet vest?
I will try to keep up with the group and the blog.

  • This is my first CAL. Love the jacket. Looking forward to selecting my yarn. Any ideas on a less expensive yarn would be helpful.

  • Will the pattern work substituting Wool-Ease Thick & Quick and using a single strand of yarn?

Zontee says: Hi Sue, yes, it will! Just make sure to make a gauge swatch and adjust your hook size as needed.

  • I want to participate and am going to try to work up a gauge. My hands ache when the hook is too large, so if it doesn’t work, then I’ll wait for the next CAL. Thanks so much for all the work you put into this great website!

  • Hi this is my first crochet along as well as some others I saw. I have been crocheting since 1985 so I think 24 years..lol. I am excited to do this as well!!! I also voted for this sweater and I am glad it won. I will probably do the lighter color and material. I do love spring colors so I will have to see what I can come up with. I have a thread blanket going right now but should be done soon.

  • This will be my first crochet along, too and I love the pattern. I am tall with long arms and would like to lengthen the pattern by 3 inches in the body and 2 inches in the sleeves. It really shouldn’t be that hard to do, should it? Would you add the lenghth before beginning the shaping?

  • Hi have never joined a crochet along, hope I can make it ..just done afghans and doileys and such, it looks alitte hard but will try..thanks

  • I live in South Africa and would like to crochet the jacket but will have to substitute the wool.Any suggestions?

Zontee says: Hi Helene, please see Heather’s latest post for yarn suggestions.

  • What a perfect pattern to dive into! I too like others have not ventured beyond the afgahn or scarf, but am looking forward to the challenge, especially in such good company!

  • I really love this pattern but need to wait for less expensive yarn substitution. As a teacher, I can’t afford that expense. Hope I’ll be able to participate. Any suggestions?

Zontee says: Hi Charlotte, please see Heather’s latest post for yarn suggestions. She uses the very affordable combination of Vanna’s Choice (over 50 gorgeous colors) and Vanna’s Glamour (for a little glitz).

  • Hello! This will be my firs garment like this! When a pattern says finished size is…. does that mean the measurment of the garment or to fit a person of that many inches? I am an ample lady who is very tall. How much more yarn should I buy in order to lengthen one inch? That way I can just multiply that times the number of inches I want to lengthen the jacket. When I sew, I add the inches in the middle. will I be able to just add to the bottom? How do I add a little ease (increase stitches) in crochet? Hope I don’t end up being your problem child! Thanks

  • I saw this pattern earlier & am anxious to get started. I really enjoy crocheting! I made a sweater for myself in the early 80’s & I hope I can make this one soon – I need one now!
    Thanks for this site.

  • Hi!

Just got the info in an e-mail. My daughter has outgrown the previous sweater I crocheted for her, so this one looks like a nice replacement, if I can make it small enough. (She’s 8.) I’ll have to check her measurements. She wants the next sweater to be white(with lavender trim). I want to do one for me in fuschia, but she’s smaller and it won’t take as long or as much yarn to do it for her.

    Audrey M. DeNeui

  • This is the one I voted for, so I’m ready to go !! I will be using up left overs so it might turn out different ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Can’t sleep, so thought I’d update myself on the interest in the new cr. pattern. Have purchased substitue yarn, wool with a blend of silk. My next hurdle will be getting the correct gauge. Good luck to all!

  • I too voted for this jacket, so feel honour bound to join in. Like many other cal members I too will be substituting the yarn. Need to go shopping.. ๐Ÿ™‚ Quite a challenge, I am very new to crochet and am teaching myself. By the way the instructions on how to crochet on the Lion Brand site are very good.

Plus I was going to ask for clarification of the stitch instructions, the post above by Heather is very clear and an excellent help.

  • I am returning to crocheting and this looks like fun. Thanks for the great pattern. Can’t wait to start. Happy Crocheting, Everyone!

  • I’m looking forward to Heather’s post on Thursday. I will need to substitute yarns as I cannot wear or work with wool.

  • I have never crocheted clothes for myself so I am looking forward to this one knowing there will be lots of help if I need it. This jacket will be great as we head into winter here in Australia.

Goodness knows what yarn I will use as we have a very limited range of Lion Brand Yarns available in Australia.

It will be a fantastic challenge.

Zontee says: Hi Paula, you can find most Lion Brand yarns in Australia through our distributor, The Knitting Loft.

  • It looks very challenging but beautiful. I will try to keep up. The big decision will be what color to choose.

  • Wow…just started a Chapter for the “Blankets for Canada Society” in Midland/Penetanguishene, Ontario….hope to have time to participate and make this fantastic jacket. When I first saw the pattern I fell in love with it and now we get to work on it together…awesome! Thanks Lion Brand Yarns…really looking forward to participating.

  • I, too, am concerned about the size. 34 too small 40 1/2 too large. What do you suggest???
This is my first crochet a long. Thanks

  • Looking forward to choosing yarns. I’m in Florida too, but a sweater is always needed for the movie theater. Mom taught me to crochet when I was about 10, but she let it go. Just retaught her, so maybe I can talk her into doing it too.

  • This was the one I voted for! I’ll be using some yarn I already have, let’s see how it comes out.
I think this will be a beautiful summer jacket!

  • Wish me luck…this is exciting.

  • I really like this pattern. This will be my first crochet-along and I am looking forward to wearing my new crochet jacket. I can not wait until Heather’s first podcast so I can learn which yarns I can subsitute so that I can make one for the sping as well.

  • I’ve never done a CAL before but I’ve always wanted to crochet a sweater so this seems a good time to start. This looks interesting and I can’t wait to give it a try! Thank you, Lion Brand!

  • as a lot of you I have never joined one of these but have been croc for more years than I can count. It will be my first garment and since Tx is warm most of the time all sugestions on a lighter weighter would be app.looking forward to this.

  • This looks just like my daughter-in-law’s style. This will make a great Christmas gift so I will be making it for her.

I have never made shaped clothing other than a one piece easy diaper shirt for charity. I am a blanket, hat, scarf and bootie person so this will be a great learning experience for me. Having someone to help and discuss this with is just what I need. I cannot get out easily to take an advanced class so this is perfect for me.

I am looking forward to the week to week progress and aharing stories and pictures with everyone.

    Good Luck!
    Kathy

  • This will be my first crochet sweater. Looking forward to the CAL and giving this a try and reading everyone’s comments.

  • I am a long-time knitter, but love the look of this jacket so I am in for the project. Would like to make the jacket in a cotton or acrylic yarn for the summer. Any suggestions?

  • From South Africa – I just joined yesterday and am also a newbee to crocheting.
I will sit this one out and try the next one though.

  • What fun… My last online project was a shawl… Great looking sweater… My sis and her girls would luv it…Going to b busy if I plan on making 3!!! But it looks like it will go fast… Anxious to get started…

  • hi,i love lion brnd!!
i am from iran. and my english language is bad!!
ilove your patterns, but i cant buy them, because i am in iran, in iran i dont have credit card!!!
help me. iam profesional crocheter. iam crochet all your free patterns. i want new patterns but i can buy them. tell me what can i do.
    thank you so much.

  • I’ll be giving this a go.
What’s the hook size in British?

Looks exciting. I also fancy instructions for something slightly longer with longer sleeves…and i’ve only crocheted a square before…

Nothing like jumping in with both feet!

Zontee says: Hi Fee, you can find UK/Metric equivalents for hook & needle sizes by checking out our chart.

  • I have never made a garment but I have made scarfs, afghans, hats and purses. I already have a question .On the pattern it says how many balls of yarn to buy. Then to the side it has ALT QTY is that for the different sizes? I will be making the 2x so I need to know before I go buy yarn. Will it take more if you make it from the Vanna yarns?I’m looking for light weight and less expensive.

  • I’m so excited to get started on this CAL project. This will be my first. I’m also anxious to hear about the yarn substitution and am waiting to purchase my yarn until after the blog posts on Thursday. I love the brown and charcoal colors but hate the feel of wool. I can’t wait.

  • Hi everyone! I can’t wait to get started on this CAL! I voted for this sweater and am anxious to go to the store and purchase my supplies. This looks like it will be a lot of fun. I just hope that I can keep up!

  • Hello again, I live in Missouri and have done some other Knit Alongs, so this is my first Crochet along. I have the back completed, but I find that some of my stitches are so tight that I have to really push the needle through. Wonder if it because we have 2 yarns, anyone else having that problem? I am not using wool.

  • This is exciting………like many others this is my first venture in a CAL. I do crochet but my problem is shapeing so I’ll give it try. Thank You Lion Brand for this exciting website.

  • HELLO LADIES,
I’VE ENJOYED READING YOUR COMMENTS ON THE NEW JACKET PROJECT. I ALSO VOTED ON THIS ONE AND EVEN THOUGH I LIVE IN SOUTH FLORIDA I INTEND TO MAKE IT. I WILL PROBABLY GO WITH THE SUGGESTION OF USING A LIGHTER YARN. ONE OF YOU SUGGESTED
COTTON EASE. I WILL CHECK OUT THE COLORS AND GET STARTED SOON. I’VE BEEN CROCHETING ALSO SINCE THE 70S. MUCH SUCCESS TO ALL ON THIS PROJECT IT SHOULD BE FUN!

  • I am looking forward to trying this jacket. I have only made clothing one other time and was happy with the results. I usually stick with crocheting afghans, scarves and hats. I also will be substituting with yarn I have amassed in four storage tubs.

  • My first ever CAL,very excited

  • This is my first CAL. I have been wary of trying a harder pattern and this seems like the perfect opportunity… there are no babies on the way…I am really excited and I can’t wait to get started…Thank you lionbrand for all the opportunities you give to develop my craft

  • This will be a challenge for me with all the other projects I have going, but I love the looks of the very classy sweater. I want to start right away but need to get the yarn and the color is always a big decision for me.

  • I am excited to try this too. I have recently come back to crochet, after many years away, but never very experienced. I live in Texas (was in Moscow- that’s why I got back into it- needed hats!!) and now it will need it to be light-weight. Love the style!!

  • Hello Everyone, this is my first CAL & I too am very excited. Because of work this is the first time I have crocheted for a while, so I hope I can keep up!

  • I have been crocheting afgans, stuffed animals etc. for several years. It sounds like fun to
crochet along with others. Where I live there
arn’t many people that crochet. So I am starved
    for discussion.
Sorry I will probably have to substitute wool,
because I live in Florida USA.
This will be great for airconditioned stores and
restaurants. My color choice will be blues. lt and dark.

  • I’ll join along! Never crocheted clothing before, but always wanted to try. I’ll be interested in the substitution options – it’s getting warmer here and I’m thinking either a nice light blue or pink sweater would be perfect for spring! Will Thursday’s post have information about different quantities of yarn if you use cotton ease or Vanna’s?

Zontee says: Hi Pookie, yes, Heather’s post, which is now up has information about the yardage needed for this pattern. Purchase enough balls for the yardage needed for your size.

  • This is my first CAL and I am really looking forward to it. I live in rual Mississippi so there is not a lot of places to go around here to crochet or knit as a group.

  • I already picked up half my yarn (the dark brown fishermans wool) and will be picking up the rest this weekend (a complimentary colored cotton).

I can’t wait to get started!

  • I love this jacket. However, in these hard economic times, the price of this yarn is a little beyond my means. What would be some good, inexpensive alternatives?

  • I’m so excited! I can’t wait to start!

  • I’ve always wanted to make something more then a doily or blanket. I’ve crocheted sense I was 8 years old and never made anything to wear.
I’m in….I’m not good at figuring out these pattern sizes, hope you’ll help me!
    April from CA.

  • I’m thrilled this jacket was picked – it’s so adorable. This is my first CAL and I’m excited about getting my yarn, so many beautiful colors to choose from. What a thrill crocheting with many others!

  • I’m excited about this project. Haven’t crocheted in about 10 years but I ready to go.

  • Hi! This is my first CAL and my first garment — I’ve always crocheted afghans. I too can’t wait for the Vanna substitution info because I need to cut costs. I can’t wait — this is a beautiful jacket!

  • Hi! This is my first CAL and my first garment — I’ve always crocheted afghans. I too can’t wait for the Vanna substitution info because I need to cut costs. I can’t wait — this is a beautiful jacket!

  • Hi, this is my first CAL, the jacket looks great, ready to go! Karen

  • Hi, I am brand new to this and have never made a sweater, just hats, scarves and amigurumi. I too would like to know a good substitution for a lighter weight jacket, however by the time I finish I’ll probably want the wool. I’ll looking forward to joining in!

  • This jacket is so adorable! I can’t wait to get my yarn and get started!

  • Love at first site – This pattern was my choice also and was excited to find out that it had been chose. I have been crocheting and knitting since I was 12, but of late have made scarves and afghans. I am so excited about starting this project and it is my first CAL. I am concerned though about the sizes, 34 too small and 40 1/2 too big – how do we adjust the size? Also, while I love the colour and blend of the cocoa and charcoal cashmere – I am looking to subsitute for a lighter weight for spring, as the weather in Bermuda is now getting warmer.

  • I am still working on the last CAL, but I will follow this one too and see how everyone does. Good luck and happy crocheting!

  • Very nice project. I’m happy with my new jacket

  • I have been crocheting long enought its about time I try somthing to wear. Iam ready to go.

  • The pattern looks beautiful and a little intimidating, but I’m game! I really look forward to seeing the first week’s post.

  • I am going to join, this is my first CAL and my first clothing to try. I have ventured into hats for the first time this winter, but am more experienced with afghans and shawls. Looking forward to expanding my knowledge with ya’ll. I also live in south Texas, so the lighter weight yarn is what I am looking forward to, can’t wait for the first posting by our leader.

  • Hi! Everyone:
I usually crochet afghans and scarfs. So this will be the first adult clothing. However, Wool? I think I will go for something a little less scratchy.
Looking forward to crocheting along with everyone.
    Juquita

  • I have been crocheting for many years but this will be one of the few times I’ll be crocheting for myself. I love wearing jackets, so I am exciting of the outcome.

  • Hi everyone. This will be for first CAL, but I love this jacket. I need seom less expensive alternatives for yarn also. Thanks.

  • This will be my first time trying to make a jacket. I crochet all the time, but I’ve only did afghans, prayer shawls, hat and scarf sets, etc. This is going to be a challenge. Can’t wait.

  • This is my first CAL as well and I amd very happy this is the project. I was hoping it would be this one. Will be getting my supplies this weekend. I am glad we can substitute yarn I like the idea of making with a lighter weight for spring.

  • I have been wanting to join a CAL for a long time.I think this will be the one. I will join in and start but as I live in India and we don’t get Lion brand yarns here and buying over the internet is not an option for me, so I will be using Indian yarn and join in.I hope that is alright.
    Thanks.

  • I’m going to try this. I love to crochet and have made scarves, and bedroom boots. I think I’m ready to tackle this jacket. I am looking forward to this. However, I have trouble making swatches match gauges. This will be a challenge.

  • Greetings! My name is Klara. I am 27 and have been crocheting for almost 20 years.
I have tons of yarn to use up, and am looking forward to trying out a new project. Though I had planned on doign the last one, it didnt happen so this will be my 1st crochet-a-long. I am now on ravelry so hopefully that will help me stay focused (not to mention its off peak season!)

  • Hi. I have decided to take the leap and join all of you. I have crocheted for 30 years (Am I really THAT old? LOL). I have been into scrapbooking, but I am looking for something a little different.
I have also never crocheted a sweater. This seems like a great opportunity to expand my skill.
Hi to Syd. Nice to know that another Missourian is here.

  • Yay!! That will be perfect to wear to my office!

  • I’m up for the challenge, but won’t be using the yarns in the pattern. Definitely not in my budget, plus wool is too scratchy for me.

With weather in MN, I should be able to wear this until June. UGH!

  • This is my first CAL as well! Like so many others I have never made a jacket before. This is a first for me! But I am excited. I also want to do my jacket in spring or summer colors. because am going on a Cruise in May and I want to be able to wear it then. Looking forward to getting started!

  • I have just started a Crochet Guild here in Memphis, TN. There are 3 of us and we are all bringing a new member to our next meeting this Saturday. We are the Creative Freedom Guild and I am bringing this pattern to the meeting Saturday to challenge the guild! This is great. I am asking everyone to bring Cotton Ease since we get warm weather here in a hurry. This will be pretty for Easter. My first CAL- very excited.

  • This is my first CAL and can’t wait to get started. I am going for lighter weight yarn as I’m in TX and it doesn’t get that cold. I haven’t crocheted anything for me in a while.

  • Yeah!! I get to go yarn shopping today!! I will be substituting yarns.
This will be my first CAL. I have lots of unfishined projects I’m doing. Looking forward to actually finishing one in a decent timeframe.

  • What a great idea. I love the pattern…thanks. I’m ordering mine today–wish me luck!

  • Like many, my first CAL. I always seem to have a problem with gauge so am going now to get yarn and get a swatch done. I’m thinking of acrylic yarn in varigated spring colors (lavenders, blues, greens) with lavender solid yarn. I’ll see what I can find. I’m excited!

  • Never participated in a CAL, consider myself a beginner although I have made a baby sweater, baby blanket, shawls and purses this also will be the first wearable for myself and am very excited.

  • Here we go. This is the first time I have done this, but I am an avid crochet-er!

  • Looking forward to trying something new.

  • Hello, all! I was afraid I would be the only one joining with no prior garment-crocheting experience. It is nice to be part of a group learning together! I am concerned about the cost of the yarn, though. Anyone found a good substitute mix, yet? Something in cotton would be great for me. I’d love to keep it under $50, in these “lean economy” days. Looking forward to getting started!

  • This will be my first CAL…like so many others, I see! I too won’t be using the yarns in this project..not within my budget but I have some nice alternatives. Can’t wait to get started. I’ve made many jackets and sweaters before so hopefully I won’t run into any bumps…I’m excited!

  • This is my first CAL, and I am so excited! I’m a beginner crocheter, but I’ll try my best! I fell in love with this jacket and voted for it. I can’t wait to get all my supplies ready! I’m working on other projects so I’ll probably be way behind everyone else, but I’ll do it anyway! Can’t wait to see everyone else’s!

  • I’ve never done a crochet along, I’ve tried a knit along but I love this sweater and will try to do this one. I will also be using a different yarn (I have a very large stash)and cannot afford to buy yarn for this project. So I hope it works. So excited. Thanks

  • I have never participated in a CAL. I am very excited. I am just glad that we will be able to submit questions while doing a project.

  • Thank you for this club. I’ve been looking for a crochet club in my area. This is GREAT! Of course, first timer! I am looking forward to sharing the challenges of working with a group. This jacket is perfect for the cool nights (while they last) in Louisiana.

    Can’t wait to get started!

  • I also voted for this jacket. It looks great! I love the cut. I’ve never been in a CAL but think I might try this. I’m checking over my stash to see what I already have that I could use. If it goes well, I will make another in other yarn.

  • I am excited to be a part of a CAL. I’ve recently expanded from scarfs to blankets; I hope I can rise to the challenge of clothes.

  • This is my first time with CAL.ร‚ย  I have been receiving Lion Brand Newsletters for a long time.ร‚ย  They have been so theraputic for me because of the loss of my son a year ago.ร‚ย  I have enjoyed Lolaร‚ย  and a now this is the first time I have partiticipated in a sweater project.ร‚ย  All new to me but couldn’t have come at a better time as I fell and broke my ankle in 2 places a month ago and have to stay off of it for possiblely another month.ร‚ย  Thank Lion Brand Blog for giving me something to do to take up the time.ร‚ย Jani

  • I’m so excited! I’ve never made a sweater before, only scarves, blankets, bags, and hats. I’m new to CAL, so I hope that I can keep up!

  • Hi! I couldn’t wait to get started on this so I started over the past week using Vanna’s Choice in Taupe and Linen together. It is nice looking but if this pattern works out for me, I will make another in more of a bright color (pink combo or something with a blue combo). I am about 1/3 of the way done on the back section. This is a very easy pattern to follow so far. Vanna’s yarn provides a nice drape and feels good to work with. When I worked out my gauge I had to go down two hook sizes so I am working with a size L hook.

  • Chris Tarski– the lavendar, blues and greens sound beautiful. jani

  • I have never done anything but afghans. I am up to the challenge. Will be substituting yarns. Don’t want wool !!!! UGH !!! I hope I can do it.

  • This is the first time for me to crochet along as a working mom and grandma, I expect to be behind everyone else. I have been crocheting since I was pregnant with my first child, 27 years ago! This will be fun and I am thinking about doing it a lighter yarn also. I love the feel of the cotton ease. I am doing the pal blanket for my granddaughter now in the cotton ease, very easy to work with.

  • I am so excited this pattern won! I can’t wait to get started even though I have several WIP. I have already bought wool. (I found it on clearance about a week ago and bought it hoping this jacket would win. Now I am going to try to match up with something a little less pricey than the cashmere. I want to do chocolate and light blue for the colors. Can’t wait for the blog on Thurs. to help with the yarn substitution. I am planning to buy yarn Friday and start crocheting over the weekend. I have never done a CAL. I have done KAL but didn’t finish LOL.

  • Like most, this will be my first CAL. I was born in 07/62 and began crocheting around mid 67. I have crocheted just about everything you can imagine. Okay, not everything.: ) I really like this pattern and thought it would be great fun to join in. I’ll put my mini teddy bears and friends aside for a while.

  • I’m really a novice. I’ve been crocheting for nearly a year and a half. I’m learning so much in part thanks to lionbrand. I’m looking forward to making my first jacket. Thanks for the opportunity and support.

  • Looks hard but I am willing to give this one a shot. I love the way it looks.

  • Please include Homespun in the substitution list. I am addicted to it.

Zontee says: Hi Rene’, you could definitely hold Homespun and Vanna’s Glamour and try that out. Be sure to to make a gauge swatch and adjust your hook size before you get started!

  • This looks a little hard , but I am willing to give it a shot. I love theway it looks.

  • I’m going to give this a try!! I have always wanted to make something to wear other than scarves! I know how to crochet, but do get confused on following the pattern. Maybe this podcast can help me along. I use to rely on my mother’s expertise, but she has since passed on. I am also a newbie to CAL!

  • I love the style, but like many others, will need to substitute yarn as double stranded wool is not Florida friendly. We can get a lot of use out of cardigans if they’re not too hot. I don’t think acrylic is much cooler, but defer to experts. Will Cottonease work? It’s not as stretchy as wool, but it’s better for our climate.

I look forward to learning more about yarn substitutions and will wait to do my gauge swatch until Heather offers suggestions. I’m fairly new to crochet and have never made a sweater, tho I’m doing scarfs, home decor, hats, etc already.

  • Hi All. Just like many of you, this is my first CAL. I’m looking forward to trying a garmet.I’ve only crocheted afghans, scarves and hats. I just hope I have the time to finish it. I have several projects going at once (don’t we all?) Vanna’s Choice will be my choice… or possibly a cotton. I’ll wait for Heather’s post tomorrow to get the details on yarn substitutions. Good Luck everyone! Let’s get busy – just in time for National Crochet week (March 16-20).

  • Small = 34″ chest and medium = 40 1/2″. Six and a half inch difference? What about all the women in the middle? The gaps between the larger sizes are much smaller, as are the differences in the length from size to size. Are you sure the small and medium chest sizes are correct?

Neither the small nor the medium will fit me. Guess I’ll wait til the next CAL to join in.

  • Hi! I just got the email and I am totally stoked to try this! This is my first CAL so if I ask silly questions bear with me. I was wondering if there is a forum or something like that where we can post questions and comments? Anyways I cant wait to start! See you all Thursday! (I think)

  • the only things i’ve crocheted are lap throws. i haven’t tried many garments because i couldn’t justify the cost of the materials possibly ending up in the trash (i tried to knit a man’s sweater once and it would have been a perfect fit, if he had one long arm and very short arm, a thin pencil neck and short torso). i would love to crochet along so people are there to help me through the “errors of my ways”. but, i may choose to use different yarn and save the cashmere expense when i’ve done this trial run.
    Can’t wait!!

  • I am so excited to work on this project!! This is my first garment. I normally work with scarves, hats, booties, blankets and afghans, but I am up for the challenge!!!

  • This is my first CAL. I am alot better at knitting and crocheting than blogging. But looking forward to getting started.

  • Like so many of you, this will be my first CAL. Being from TX, I will not be using wool and am anxiously waiting for the substitution list. I have knitted for many years; but this will be my first item of crocheted clothing and am looking forward to a new learning experience. Wouldn’t it be great if I had something in my stash that will work? LOL

    Barb

  • I am going to try the cal. My crochet skills have defeated me more than once, but am willing to go for this. However, I would like to use something like sugar n’ cream cotton or cotton sports yarn as I live in southern Louisiana. Is there a way to adjust pattern and gauge?

  • I am so excited to be working on this project. To me the jacket looks like one that I saw in a very expensive store. You know that some can definately look too’homemade’. Can’t wait to get started. Thanks again.

  • I am anxious to start and to read about sub yarns, the wool/chasmere blend sounds wonderful but also expensive and WARM, especially as I live in AZ.

    I saw that 2 strands of Cotton-Ease was suggested…but the colors…decisions! Decisions!

PS…The is my first CAL too, I have been crocheting since I was 7…so (OH MY!) for nearly 32 years!

  • Hi – this will be my first crochet-a-long. I’m really looking forward to it as well. I’m going to check my stash first and if no luck there I’ll wait for Thursday to see what I can substitute with – I would like to crochet this sweater with lighter yarns. I’m also going to make it a little longer – I will be making the 2X size and I like my sweaters a little longer.

Becky (#30) was asking about prayer shawls for men – Becky there is a book called The Prayer Shawl Companion – I don’t know if you knit or not, but if you knit, there are several shawls in there that would be lovely for a man. Take a look at page 89 for one great example if you see the book.

    Cheers everyone
Cathy in cold, windy, snowy Ontario, Canada

  • I’m assuming CAL means crochet along. I will be crocheting along.I’ve been making lots of baby blankets and preemie and baby hats for hospitals recently. Before that it was afghans for every family member and special ones for when they went off to college (made in the college colors), scarves, hats, and ponchos. This time, it’s for me. I love finding patterns online and making new things. Everyone, ENJOY!!!

  • This will be my first attempt at a sweater, and my first CAL. I hope my granddaughter will like this style, and the colors I choose. I should probably ask for her color preference before I start.
    Anyway, this sould be interesting.

  • Hi,
I’m Darlene and I can’t wait to start.

  • I’m pumped that this is the pattern chosen – can’t wait to get started! Too bad there are so many other things I can’t wait to get started.

  • I have been crocheting off and on for about 9 years now. Mostly I stick to projects with larger hooks or things I can finish quickly like scarves, as I get easily distracted. But I am excited to do this, hopefully with the support from everyone else I will not get stuck and can get it finished!

  • First CAL. This is going to be fun! I am a self taught knitter and crocheter, been doing both for many years. Can’t wait to get started!

  • I didn’t vote for this jacket but think it would be very cute and comfortable on my grand daughter if crochet in cotton ease. I’m going to make it for the experience and hopefully, with help, the results will be more professional than some other clothing projects I’ve done. Looking forward to starting!

  • I’m also very pleased that the Moderne jacket was picked, like everybody else. (I voted for it!) I have several requests: I’m in Canada, and do not understand your crochet hook sizes, so could you give them in metric in your patterns as well? Also, could you post a closeup photo of the pattern stitch? This is my first CAL as well, nice to know so many of us are new to this. I’m also looking forward to hearing about how to use lighter weight yarns and adjusting pattern and gauge. I have a stash of cottons in light green, and I have enough that I could do the jacket with a matching tank top. Are there any patterns for this?

  • Hi! This will be my 1st CAL. Very excited to make this project. Haven’t crocheted in a while so will probably have lots of questions.

  • This is also my first CAL. I’m going to go get supplies tonight. I have been crocheting sense the 60’s. I was in second grade when I learned how. I have made many different things. Sweats for my 4 daughters, and many things for the house and now my grandkids. This one is for me. I have lost over 40 pounds and could use some new things to wear. I really can’t wait to wear this one.

  • I have been knitting for years but only crocheted afhgans and scarves. The pattern looks exciting but a little intimating. Am anxious to start getting my yarn, pobably cotton ease as some have suggested, in a green, I think.

  • This is my first CAL project and I’m really looking forward to giving it a try. I just finished crocheting my first baby sweater, so now I THINK (?) I can do an adult project. I’m allergic to wool – any other yarn suggestions??

  • I look forward to completing this jacket. It looks like fun and it is a very nice jacket.

  • Have decided to join your CAL of this sweater.
Sounds like fun and a bigger challenge as have not done an intermediate pattern. Must move up in the crochet skill.
I am also looking forward to the substitute yarn suggestions.

  • I am really looking forward to participating. This will be my first CAL. The challenge always seems to be getting the swatch right but I’m ready to do this.

  • This is my first CAL project. I love the sweater. I have made sweaters for adults, children and infants. I can’t wait to start this sweater.

  • This is my second CAL, it is really pretty and I love to make my jackets. Will make it in alpaca as it is very reasonable here in South America where we are vacationing. Black with a light colour, don’t know which one yet. Thank you for the CAL!

  • Becky, when I make a prayer lapghan for the men, I use a little more than 3 skeins of LB Homespun yarn and a size P crochet hook. My pattern consists of 3sc, 3dc with a ch 1 at the end of each row. I chain 55, then sc in each ch, then ch 1 at the end, 2nd row is pattern stitch, last row is sc, & crochet until it measures approx. 38 x 26 1/2 then add an approx 3 1/2″ border. With the border the lapghan (sp?) measures approx 42 x 30 1/2 This would fit over the lap better than the shoulders.

    * always do sc in dc of previous row, and dc in sc in previous row.

of course, if you’d like to use more yarn, you can make the lapghan larger.

  • This looks like a fun one. I think I will give it a go!

  • I’m really happy about trying my first CAL – am going to make it for my daughter for a Christmas present. Hmmm…hope I finish it by then!

  • I’ll give it a try.

  • I am looking forward to starting on this jacket, which I hope will be a gift for one of my daughters. This is my 1st CAL project but I am an experienced crochet/knitter so this will be fun! Thanks for the pattern, I’m sure I will use it again!

  • I’m so glad this won because I voted for it! This is the very first item I’ll be making for myself. I cannot wait!

  • This will be my first, not last CAL. Along with the other crocheting and knitting I am doing, this will be interesting to try. I am going to be stumped on which colors to go for though. Right now I am so cold, I wish it was already finished. I am really looking forward to the KAL in April too.

  • I actually voted for the Lush Lace Pullover and am currently working on it. It’s my first attempt at a fitted garment and so far, so good.

The Moderne Jacket looks cute, but stiff and heavy. I eagerly await tomorrow’s blog on substituting other yarns.

I am also wondering about the small to medium gap in sizing.

I think this jacket could easily be made suitable for a special occasion by using angora!

  • This is my first crochet project other than learning swatches. I’ve already tried the stitch in scrap yarn and I think I can do this. I love this jacket! I’m going to try to use a cotton all-weather type yarn since it’s already getting warm here in DC! I assume if I look for a similar weight and gauge and then fine tune it once I do my gauge swatch that should work? Why do the instructions go from a bust 34 to a bust 40 1/2? I’m in-between. Any advice how to handle that?

  • Greetings! This is my first time on a crochet -a-long! How fun is this! I have been a closet crochet-r for many mnay years…this will be a great challenge and fun to see everyones version!
    Crochet On!

  • It looks like fun. I’m hurrying to finish a baby blanket so I can get started on this!

  • OK ladies, I taught myself to knit in about 1948 during summer vacation from high school. And, I started with a very difficult doily pattern — it had pansies around the outer edges and was really nice. I still have it and one other that I made at the time – it has roses around the doily.
Mostly the past few years I’ve been knitting scarves and making baby afghans, but I’ve always got either some knitting or crocheting going. I think I’m going to try this sweater.

  • I have been knitting and crocheting for years, mainly knitting. I have never done a CAL so I am up for the challenge. Can’t wait to see the yarn substitutions on Thursday.

  • I would love to do this project, but my only problem is to find similar yarns in India.I’ll have to try different yarns to get the correct gauge.

  • Hello Ladies,
I recall crochetting at a young age, made a scarf, now I’ve been reintroduce by my Coworkers. Thanks. It helps to reduce stress, allows me to be a little creative, if I could read patterns better, that would make my day.

  • I am new to this site and would like to try the CAL. I have been knitting for a lot of years but not so much in crochet other than baby blankets and sweaters. I am excited about having a group that I can ask questions and see how others are doing and what new ideas there are out there. I am thinking of trying this particular sweater in the winter white. I have so much left over wool as well but I don’t think the gauges will fit.

  • I have only been crocheting for about a year now. Like many others, I have only made a couple of baby afghans, a few hats, and a scarf. I voted for this pattern, but now am getting pretty nervous! This looks pretty difficult- I have never done anything involving a clothing pattern, so here goes nothing. I will definitely get a cheaper yarn… especially since there is no guarantee it will even turn out for me!!! (Not to mention I live in Arizona!!!!) Looking forward to Thursday’s post for tips on alternate yarns!
    Good luck to everyone!

  • Hi, Everyone!

I have never participated in a CAL before, but this sounds fun! I can’t wait to get started! I am a 4th grade Writing teacher so I’m very busy during the day at school, but I plan to crochet and correspond with ya’ll in the evenings and on the weekends. Yeah! Let’s talk again soon!

  • Okay you’ve convinced me, reading all your comments I’ve decided to join in. I’ve been crotcheing for years, but never made any clothing, just afghans, purses, etc. Can’t wait to get started. I have the same question as some of you do regarding the size difference between the small and medium?

  • this project caught my eye but I’m left handed and have no idea how to reverse the pattern as that is what I have been told i need to do. Maybe that’s why I have only crocheted lots of afgans up to this point!

  • Looks like a lot of us our first timers to this. Glad I am not alone. I love that someone stated they too were adding inches to the bottom. I like my tops longer as well but am always worried that I will mess things up. I can’t wait to start. Just have to get yarn and start on stitch at a time. Good luck to everyone!!

  • Today seems like a good day to start something, so I’ll just join my first CAL. I’ll follow along on Ravelry and post pics there as well as my blog! I’ve crocheted for years and years and I’m so excited by finding more and more crocheted patterns for clothing. Woo-hoo!

  • I am excited to start this project.I’ve always stayed away from making anything other than an afghan or shawl. This looks like a challenge, but this is the year for me to tackle the new and different that comes my way.

  • This will be my first. I’m allergic to wool so I’ll need to find an alternative to the wool.

  • I’m in! This will be my first CAL.Excited to see how this will go.Very cute jacket!I also am interested in the yarn substitutions we can use. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I would love to join in with this project, I am
complete new to this type of thing, but would love to try!

  • This is my first CAL. I have a bunch of cotton ease I was going to use for another project, but I think I’ll use it for this instead! The only other sweater I’ve made was one for my baby son when he was a newborn. This looks like much more of a challenge. We’ll see how it works out. Now, I have to see what colors I have and what I’ll have to buy. Looking forward to working on this!

  • I have been crocheting for years off and on when I had the time. Now that I’m retired, I love to spend my time on yarn projects. Taught myself to knit- again – and will love doing this. Look forward to hearing what kinds of yarns all will be using. In Texas, its just too hot for wool, even in what little winter we have.

  • Cathy (#223) your cold up here too huh? Im wondering when the heck spring will finally get here… but until then i will be keeping warm under which ever crochet project I am working on at the moment ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Can’t wait to get started. I love making sweaters. This one should be fun.

  • I will rtry – I crocheted baby blankets and afgans but never somethin for myself – it will be a challenge and I am very excited

  • I will try – I crocheted baby blankets and afgans but never somethin for myself – it will be a challenge and I am very excited

  • Hi, I am English and I live in Surrey which is about one hour from London. I am going to give this pattern a try and am looking forward to hearing how you are all doing with it too.

I have been crocheting since I was nine years old and I love making crochet garments as well as blankets, tablecloths and other ‘flat’ items. The first thing I ever made was a granny square blanket for my big sister’s baby (she was 12 years older than me and I was very thrilled to be an auntie). The second thing was a blue cardigan in acrylic yarn which never seemed to wear out!

This jacket looks lovely and is very stylish. I do agree though that at this time of year it would be a good idea to use a lighter weight yarn such as Cotton-Ease.

We can get Lion Brand yarns in the UK through a company called Banyan yarns. They are also available sometimes on Ebay although usually only in small quantities. I think people auction off left-over balls.

I have been ‘following’ Lion Brand’s emails for a couple of years and look at the website regularly. You are so lucky in the States – NONE of the UK yarn producers offers free patterns either as downloads or in leaflet form. You can usually only purchase a pattern when you buy yarn unless you buy a craft book. I do belong to the Rowan club but of course you do have to pay for membership. So, thank you Lion Brand.

Knitting and crochet patterns are a little bit different between the States and the UK. We are expected to measure in metric these days although I still prefer Imperial! We use metric needle and crochet hook sizes too although our old sizing for them was different from yours in any case. When it comes to making an item, we refer to what you call single crochet as double crochet. Your single crochet is our slip stitch. The stitch you call double crochet is a treble stitch in the UK and your treble stitch is our double treble. Still with me?

Similarly with knitting we refer to binding off as casting off although I think there are no other real differences.

Good luck everyone – I hope we all get on well with the project.

  • I’m in, I have never made more than an afghan but I am ready to try bigger things. Wish me luck. I’m off to get my yarn.

  • I’m thrilled that there will be lower-price suggestions! I like the jacket, but the yarn was just too pricey for me. Looking forward to Thursday! I knit nearly all the time, but I also like to change things up – this should be fun.

  • This will be my first CAL–I hope I can keep up with everyone and am looking forward to finishing this sweater–just cannot decide what color!!!!

  • This is my first crochet-a-long, though I’ve done a couple of knit-a-longs. I’ve never actually kept up, though! In fact, I’m not sure I’ve finished the projects yet. Hmm, doesn’t bode too well, but, as they say, hope springs eternal.
I’ve been wanting to try a crocheted more-fitted garment, because, as I’ve read others say, I also have mostly done blankets or shawls. The occasional baby bootie, that kind of thing.
I’m planning to shop in my own stash, though. I have quite the yarn collection, and I’ve given up yarn purchases for lent. ๐Ÿ˜‰
Looking forward to finding a good yarn and swatching!

  • I love the look of this pattern and hope I can make one just as beautiful.

  • This will my first CAL I am looking forward to it, I hope I can keep up. I am allergic to wool
so I will need an alternative yarn, but something
that would give me the same look and weight.

  • Excited about this and hoping that the CAL will keep me moving. I’m going to use Cotton Ease for mine as I’m in a pretty moderate climate–looking at a color combo involving purple–I already have a purple cotton yarn that I haven’t started anything with.

  • I started the last CAL, but got bored. I made my afghan larger and multi-colored used a different yarn (LB Organic Cotton – yummy yarn) and added a few different blocks. I just have to put it together.

I’m definitely excited about this one. Looking forward to whipping it out. Now about those colors….

  • Hi This is my second crochet along . Was wandering if I can use another type of yarn . I can’t use wool .I use crocheting to get mind off my pain . Hope we all have fun together .

  • Hi, I didn’t vote for this one, however the more I look at it the better I like it. Haven’t yet picked out my colours yet, but I want something spring/summer like. I also don’t want to use the wool as I am allergic to wool. I like the idea of double strand Cotton EAse. I might have to go with that. I have been crocheting forever and a day- or so it seems. I started very young – age 7 or so. and even though I started young, I had difficulty deciphering the pattern. So I made a small swatch with some leftover yarn to see how it would work up and it is quite easy, but very pretty. Looking forward to working with you all.
    Liane

  • HELLO
I AM READY FOR A CROCHET CHALLENGE. I HAVE NEVER MADE A WEARABLE FOR AN ADULT. I AM EXCITED ABOUT TRYING THIS.
    PHYLLIS

  • i love to knit or crochet but this is the first time ive ever done a cal. i need to look at study the patern though cause i am sure i am gonna go the cotton route so it will be easy care. maybe some vintage buttons too.

  • Back atcha, Nicole, regarding which size to make. I would draw out full sized body pieces illustrated on the pattern, cut them out and tape them together. Then you can try the “sample” on for size. Light weight paper, like tissue paper is best for this. If you have a fabric stash, you could also use some of that. When you are comfortable about your size, you can take the pieces apart and keep them as a referrence. As you crochet, periodically compare your piece with the actual-sized sample. This helps if you tend to “wander” in your gauge.

  • Ha Everyboy, This is my first crochet along. I love the Moderne Jacket. If I have questions can I contact someone by phone? I don’t have all of my supplies yet but I hope to get them in a day are so.

Zontee says: Hi Anita, Lion Brand has a call-in pattern support help-line that can be reached at 800-705-8636.

  • I’m from Pennsylvania, I’ve been crocheting since the late 80’s. This will be my first CAL and my first jacket project. Looking forward to give it a whirl. Good luck to everyone.

  • I’m in! I forgot to vote, but liked this one best. I have some antique-turquoise cotton at home already, and am thinking of mixing it with taupe cotton or bamboo to have a spring jacket. Looking forward to starting another project.

  • This will be my first crochet-along. I’m going to have to substitute yarns for something that will fit my F/T college student budget, but I’m excited about geting help in finishing something in less that a year.

  • I did the last crochet-a-long afghan and am finally putting it together, forcing myself to finish it before I start this jacket. I purchased Vanna acrylic yarns, one a solid color (taupe) and one a taupe tweed. I will make the swatch to see whether I’ll need to adjust the hook size, thinking I will have to make some changes. I was also thinking of just a solid color because there are so many pretty ones, but thought taupe was more neutral.

  • Heather,

The email said, “version of the jacket with Vanna’s Choice and Vanna’s Glamour”. Can you tell me what supplies I need if I prefer to use the Vanna’s Choice and Vanna’s Galmour yarn? Will I use the same size hook that was in the pattern?

    Thanks!!

Heather says: Hi, Linda (and almost 300 of you!) who have responded with your enthusiasm for this CAL. Wow! Tomorrow will be the first post for the start of the CAL, so more information on what types of yarn to use will be discussed there and then. I am thrilled to see so many of you joining in!

  • I’m so very excited to try my first sweater. I’m even MORE excited about making something for ME instead of having every project I make go to someone else.

  • Hi,
Im looking forward to having a go at this jacket, but not got a clue what yearns to buy as i live in the uk.
Has anyone any ideas what could be used.

    Thanks

    Jacky

Zontee says: Hi Jacky, Lion Brand yarns are available in the UK through our distributor, Banyan Tree Yarns. You can also find UK/Australia equivalents for yarn weights on our Yarn by Weights guide. Hope that helps!

  • this looks like fun and 1st time doing a CAL!!! Have lots in my stash, will look to see what I have the most of. Probably cotton. Have made several vests and Tee’s so now just have to learn to put in sleeves.

  • My first time trying this CAL. Hope I can keep up with everyone, I’m really excited to get started with everyone. It would be great to run into someone wearing the same sweater some day and find out we made them together…

  • This is my first crochet along. I’ve been crocheting since I was 13 when my grandmother taught me how to make a granny square (I’m almost eligible for retirement now). I love the newsletters and am very pleased this pattern won!! I, too, am thinking about what color I want to make – but am leaning toward spring/summer colors. Happy crocheting!!

  • Hello!

This will be my first crochet along too. I am looking forward to the challenge. I need a project to keep me busy and to share!

  • My first CAL. I voted. I’m pleased and now I will create. Good luck to all.

  • I can’t not wait to do this. It looks really nice and it would make a very good present for someone.

  • This is my first CAL. I’m not sure if I’m up to the challenge, but I really like the pattern, so I’m going to give it a try.

  • Heather, regarding yarns to substitute, I made a tote bag using two strands of cotton worsted weight yarn, and it was very stiff, great for a tote bag, but I don’t think I would want it for a jacket. As a qualifier, I used a size J or K hook…perhaps N would have made it more flexible, thus more suitable.

  • This is my first. I will try to do the pattern. I like to crochet but have a learning diability due to strokes.

  • I am excited about this project. The finishing is always the hardest part so am looking for lots of help in that department. Have Peaches N Creme Cotton worsted weight. Any ideas if that particular cotton would work in this project?

  • Just finished reading some of the comments. This is also my first CAL project, although I have been crocheting for most of my life. I was taught by my Grandma when I was 6 or 7 and I am 56! I have not had much luck with crocheting clothing, so am looking forward to the project.

  • looking forward to start this project, i haven’t been crocheting for a while lets hope it all comes back.

  • […] Lion Brand Yarn Blog has another crochet-a-long (CAL) starting up, and after allowing the pattern decision to be selected by their blog readers via […]

  • Yay – I loved this style, so I’m so glad it won the vote. This is my first CAL and I’ve never crocheted a piece of clothing before, but I’m looking forward to trying.

  • I love the look of this jacket and am VERY tempted. I have troubles finishing crochet projects because the forearm twisting agravates the nerves in my arm. I have tried wider handles. Has anyone tried the hook with the egg shaped handle? I really want to try this jacket!

  • This is my first CAL. I am teaching myself and hope this project turns out right. I can’t wait to get started.

  • This looks like allot of fun. Been a long time since I tackeled something this ‘big’. will see how it goes.

  • This will be my first CAL……I’m excited!! Finished my latest project last night and was wondering what to do next.

  • I can knit, but the art of crochet has always seemed more difficult to me for some reason. So, I am looking forward to attempting this CAL project and the comments/questions and the good answers that will be provided for those of us who are less-skilled! Also looking forward to learning about alternate, and hopefully less-expensive yarns that can be used! I think the sweater/jacket pattern is wonderful and hope to do it in a solid color, perhaps a chocolate brown?

  • I am up for this challenge I have already joined the Ravelry Group!

    Heidi

  • This jacket looks lovely but I’m going to have to make substitutions for the yarn because the yarn called for will cost $120 and I find that a little high for a homemade item.

  • I’m so excited about this project! However, I tried to order the yarn online and am having difficulty. I sent a message to Lion Brand, but no one has responded.

Please tell me how to order the yarn in different colors from the sample – and get the 15% discount. I don’t seem to be able to change the color for the wool, put it in the cart, and then go back and change the color for the cashmere. When I try to put the cashmere in my cart, the wool disappears!

Help – I’d really like to get started.

    Thank you,
    Mary

  • I am excited to try a CAL (this is my first). I’ve been so busy making prayer shawls for our church that I need a change of pace. I’ll have to go look at yarn this weekend and see what inspires me!

  • i’d REALLY like to make this in a single strand yarn – probably a wool blend. what yarn would be recommended for this?? i’ve enjoyed reading the other comments and questions
    thanks.
    jd in st louis

Zontee says: Hi JD, you can make this in a single strand of Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, a great easy-care wool-blend, if you prefer.

  • I can’t wait to start! I love this pattern and think it might even be something I actually make for myself instead of someone else (a rare occurence!)Now, to purchase yarn – without spending a bundle on that “just because I might want to use this sometime” yarn! By the way, race you to see who finishes last!

  • I just purchased my yarn for the jacket. I am going to use Vanna’s yarn. Upon puchasing the glamour yarn, which I am using instead of the cashmere, I noticed how many balls of yarn this pattern was asking for. The Cashmere Blend Yarn only has 87 Yards per ball. Since I am going to make the large, I only need 1,044 yards of yarn. Vanna’s Glamour Yarn has 202 yards per skein, which means that I only needed to order 7 skeins instead of 13, which is what the pattern stated.
If you are substituting yarns to make this jacket, please make sure you look at how many yards the ball that you are using has, so that you don’t purchase to many. I always buy one extra skein, just to be safe.

    Good Luck to All

    Mimi

  • Several people mentioned being between sizes, say a small and medium. I am not experienced at crocheting clothing, but am an advanced seamstress. Why not just try going halfway between the given numbers? You would need to make sure the number of chains at the beginning will let you complete the pattern stitch in the following rows, and not leave you hanging with extra (or not enough) stitches in the previous row to complete the pattern stitch. And for those wishing to lengthen the jacket, you will want to lengthen before the decrease begins, or may even wish to increase the width of the jacket at the lower edge, because a longer jacket will be hitting a wider part of your hips. Also, for international crochters, there are web pages that compare the American and British stitch terms and convert hook sizes to metric ones.

  • Hi This will be my first CAL. I taught myself to knit when I started to work because of working for Ma Bell. I made a sweater and when I came to the front bands they were crocheted. I had to teach myself to crochet to finish the sweater. I still would have it if I didn’t get it mixed up in the wash and throw it in the dryer(it was wool).
If you have any old Mon Tricot books they have the Equivalent English &American Terms and chart for English, American & Continental needles and crochet hook sizes.

  • Hi, This is a great idea. I will download the pattern because when I have more time I will do this jacket. It is so cool. Thanks Lion, Melissa

  • Lynn,
I don’t think anyone answered your question about working into one or two loops of the stitch. Unless the pattern says otherwise, you should use both loops. Special patterns might tell you to work into front or back loop, which will give a looser, lacy effect. For this pattern, I’m sure you should use both loops.

  • Hi there! this will be my first CAL. Have only been crocheting for 60 years. I love doing some-thing new and different. I,too, am allergic to wool. Am looking forward to substitution suggestions. I,m ready for the fun!

  • I voted for the pullover because I couldn’t afford the yarn for the jacket. But truthfully the jacket is my first choice and will search for less expensive yarn options. I also like the idea of a “spring” jacket and think hot pink or lemon yellow might look wonderful. I have crocheted an afghan and small gift items, but never a piece of clothing for myself. How exciting!! I am new to ravelry and to blogs and chats and all of that, but will muddle through somehow. Thank you Lion Brand Yarns

  • This will be my first CAL. Very excited to get started, but I want brighter colors. I think I will try a red and silver combination. I hope Heather’s suggestions for Vanna’s favorites will be just the right thing.

  • Can’t wait first CAL ๐Ÿ™‚ I might even finish ๐Ÿ™‚

  • My first time doing a CAL…This looks like a nice project and I am interested in doing it in something a bit lighter to wear in Florida on cool evenings and mornings. Is it necessary to do 2 kinds of yarn together??

  • I have never participated in a CAL but am looking forward to it my biggest issue is time due to running a restaurant but definitely looking forward to it

  • Wow…it’s so beautiful…I must try..thanks for the pattern!

  • I am excited and nervous about this project. Crocheting is not one of my strengths. I am willing to try. Thank you. It will be fun!!!

  • This is my first CAL project. I have made scarves and afgans as well but never clothing. I love the sweater and look forward to making it lighter and in a spring color to wear here in North Florida.

  • Looking forward to joining the CAL also. And waiting to hear about the options using Vanna’s Choice and Vanna’s Glamour.

  • This is my first CAL and my first sweater I am very excited about this challenging but beautiful pattern.

  • I love a simple textured stitch that lets the yarn do the talking. At age six, I was taught to crochet by a patient aunt; my first project was a thread doily! So to the new crocheters, just hang in there. Now I’m sixty and hope to make this in springy cotton as first CAL.

  • It is so good for me to have all these patterns. Thank you very for sharing all of the.

  • Hi all,

I was thinking of making this jacket, and was measuring to check the size. I found the chest measurement for L was right at my bust size and the 1X was substantially bigger. But either length seems quite skimpy – barely from my shoulder to the waistband of my jeans for L. And I certainly don’t want a jacket that is as short and wide as that…

Am I not measuring in the right spot for length? I laid the measuring tape from shoulder seam forward, over my bust to the waist. Now I’m thinking maybe it is from center back neck edge down – no matter. Checked the pattern again and these two measurements on the back and front left are the same, it seems.

So, it makes me think this shape won’t work for me. Any variations or fixes in the works?

    Thanks,
    Tonia in NY

  • Tonia,
I may be mistaken but I think it is a shorter swing style (almost) jacket. I do think it would be simple to make it longer if that complements your body better.

  • This is going to be a real challenge for me since I’m a beginner, but, I’m up for it. This sweater is beautiful. I want to do it in cotton since I live where it’s warm. I can’t wait to start!

  • COUNT ME IN. THIS CAL IS NEW TO ME AND I JUST STARTED CROCHETING AGAIN A FEW MONTHS AGO. THIS JACKET LOOKS GREAT. SO WITH HELP FROM ALL MY NEW FRIENDS, I HOPE TO BE WEARING MY NEW BEAUTY REAL SOON. LET’S HAVE SOME FUN.

  • Hi there, I am new to CAL. I am not sure how this works but I love the Moderne Jacket. I have done some projects on my own but never this way. I have gone through the instructions yesterday and this morning and I am afraid that I may be lost midway through. For the projects that I have done, I refer to charts (found in Japanese magazines). Is there by any chance a chart for this project? Thank you.

  • This is my first CAL also. I’m a beginner and hope I could to this. I love the look of the jacket. I’m looking forward to this and it sounds like fun.

  • I was just looking at this pattern last week. I am so excited. This will be my first CAL or any “along” for that matter. Now to pick out what colors I will use….decisions, decisions ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Hoping I can follow along on this I have been crocheting for almost 40 some years with most of my projects as gifts for friends and family. I thing it is great to have the larger sizes available to make. I will be away for the first couple days but have printed the pattern and plan to visit a yarn store in Anchorage as I live here in Juneau and the colors and types of yarns are limited I do order form the web site on occations but since I am going on this trip this will give me a reason to visit and purchase some yarn that I will enjoy making an item for myself. Hope to see more larger sizes and that I can follow along with this type of format I am new to this Crochet along site but it sounded like a great place to meet people that I share a common interest in while creating a work of beauty!

    Venus

  • This is my first CAL also. I’ve been crocheting since I was a child – my Grandmother taught me! I’m going to use 2 strands of Cotton Ease I think, I like in California and the Wool and Cashmere wouldn’t get enough wear! The Cotton will be great nearly all year round though! I did a Blue and Tan combo baby sweater for my Grandson that came out great. I might go with that color combo for me as well. A denim blue and tan would make jeans a fashion statement with this jacket over them! Looking forward to this!

  • Hi,
This is my first CAL and I am excited to be a part of this one. Can I substitute the mentioned yarn with any worsted weight yarn?

  • I’m in, but awaiting Heather’s post before getting started. Hopefully, all the questions will be answered then.

  • I’m going to try! Beginner, but willing to go for it! I love the jacket pattern. I also would like to do a “one yarn” version. Any ideas on yarn? Maybe a chunkier yarn?

To Dorothy # 301 — We want something with body in the yarn, so the jacket won’t droop, (maybe that is why the “two yarn” pattern), but I would think that the cotton yarn would be too stiff, as well.

I would love to use up some of my stash, but doubt that I have 7-13 skiens of the same yarn. I think that a bright Spring color would be nice and modern, but I am leaning toward the browns or the moss greens.

I’ll post on Ralvery, so this will help me to actually work on it and hopefully finish it — so many projects, so little time! Good luck everyone!!!!

  • I am very disappointed that this is the pattern most people chose. I do not know who I would make this for, but I could have made the lovely multi pattern lacy pullover for several people, and I have lots of Woolease yarn already in my stash. I will have to wait for another crochet along as this pattern does not appeal to me. Good luck to everyone taking part. I hope you have fun.

  • cool, am in!

  • Hi,

I am new to crocheting and this will be my first CAL. I am really excited to be a part of this project. I hope to make this jacket and gift it to my mom this winter. Since I am in India, I am eagerly waiting for Heather’s mail on substitute yarns which can be used for this project. The pattern given is for S Size and I would like to make this jacket in size L. Can someone help and guide me how can I read from the pattern given on Lions Brand and start crocheting for L size?

    Thanks

  • Hi! I’ve been crocheting for about 3 months but have already made a ton of scarves, dish scrubbies, and stuffed animals. I’m nearly done with my first afghan (pattern by lion brand) and this looks like a good next challenge!

  • […] Join the Moderne Jacket Crochet-Along (introductary post) […]

  • Finally something that’s crocheted but doesn’t look like my grandmother made it! Good for you, Lion Brand!

  • Will try – basically I have only crocheted afghans, etc. Nothing to wear for myself, but will give it a try.

  • Hi,
I’ve been crocheting and knitting since I was around 8 years old. My Grandmother taught me also. This will be my first CAL and I am looking forward to being a part of the Crochet Along Group. I voted for this cardigan- I love the drape and cut of this design. I would like some suggestions for an alternate yarn to the cashmere since it is quite spendy and I am more likely to wear it with jeans, khakis, or a long skirt for a more casual look. Maybe that is why others have suggested cotton, but it may not drape like it was meant to.
I am already a member of Ravelry and flickr and plan to participate in those discussions as well. Don’t be discouraged when you go to my Etsy site. It is still a work in progress.
A big Thank You to Lionbrand for their So Beautiful yarns and great patterns and kits, and for sponsoring the Crochet and Knit Alongs.

  • to Tonia, #337
The length of a garment is measured from the base of your neck down your spine, and the jacket could easily be lengthened. Hopefully Heather will address this, as many people have made this comment.

  • Hello I am Poiema and I am excited about this group and I can’t wait to get started!

  • I just received this e-mail and I am going to participate. I love the Jacket. I have also forwarded it on to a friend who crochets.

I am mostly a knitter but love crochet also. Love challenges.

It will be fun reading comments from others as I crochet along.

I hope to participate in these crochet alongs in the future.

I have used all your yarns, but really love Vanna’s yarn and will be using that yarn for my Jacket.

    Happy crocheting day to all.

  • I am excited to work on a project like this. I’ve never crocheted clothes for myself only for children. Can’t wait to get started!

  • I’ve been crocheting since I was 8 but i’ve never blogged. I think I’m gonna switch up the yarn as well as wool/cashmere doesn’t really suit my lifestyle. More soccer grandma than stylista but I love the tailored lines of the sweater and I always need something over a T-shirt to cute top. I think this will be fun.

  • I haven’t done much crochet for a while but I like this jacket very much and would like to try to do it. Also have a stash of yarns and cannot spend a lot on more yarn but will try to decide on a lovely color.

    Anne in New Orleans

  • I love that sweater! I am going to join in on this. I always use Lionbrand patterns and I love them!

  • I’ve been a knitter/crocheter for several decades .. but have never participated in a CAL! I voted for this jacket and am anxious to get started. However, because of the economy, I won’t be getting the suggested yarns ($110 will buy several days of food!) Am looking forward to this project! =)

  • This will be my first CAL, too. I can easily make the medium and will use the alternate of Vanna yarns but I am always worried that the arms in the bicep area will be too tight. I have heavy upper arms and always have to adjust my sewing patterns for this. How would I do it here?

    Lisa in TX

  • I’m excited to try this. I love the lines of the jacket. I’ve only made a few baby items and have been wanting to try adult clothing. Thank You Lion for this opportunity.
    Nancy

  • Hello Heather, this will be a first for me but I love challenges.
    Staten Island, NY

  • Hi Everyone,
Wow I’m so excited that so many people also wanted to make this jacket! I think it is so cute. I ordered my yarn from LB in advance hoping it would be chosen for this Crochet-Along(for once I was lucky and prepared,ha!). I too am curious about using cotton as an alternative yarn for a Summer jacket.

This is my first time making a fitted jacket, like many of you I have made afghans, scarves, doilies, purses etc. I am so ready for this project. Plus having so many new friends to work alnog with is going to be a blast! Now I must check my other supplies and see if I have the correct size crochet hook.

I did have to laugh at the lady that said she has to slip her yarn in past her husband. Yes I have been there too and happy to see I’m not alone.

Also to the lady from Iran that can’t use her credit card to purchase the pattern. Look again at the Lion Brand Website the pattern is FREE for all the people until March 23rd. (or something like that).

Good luck to all, all around the world!

  • I am nearly finished with the back. I particularly like the stitch pattern and will use it again, maybe in a baby afghan. One thing that bothers me is that the decrease row disrupts the pattern, causing it to jog over by one stitch. This is especially noticeable toward the end, as every row is a decrese row. Am I reading this right?

  • Hi, New to CAL, I have crocheted ever since I can remember. This appears to be a rather simple pattern. Will consider for one of my next projects as I had just started another project,a knitted sweater. Good luck to everyone.

  • My name is Nekeisha and I live in Trinidad. This is my first CAL, I am also new to wearables. I am however vary the pattern a little and doing it us Tunisian Crochet.

  • Hi Heather,

I’m so pleased to be able to join in.

  • I AM ACCUSTOM TO MAKING KNITTED AND CROCHET ITEMS FOR NEWBORNS AND TODDLER, AS WELL AS KNIT ACCESSORIES FOR ADULTS, BUT SOME PARTS OF THIS PATTERN SEEM TO NEED ADDITIONAL EXPLAINING, LIKE THE DECREASES.

WILL THE PATTERN BE EXPLAINED AS THE PROJECT GOES ON? IS THEIR A DEADLINE FOR COMPLETION OF PROJECT BECAUSE I AM A PART-TIME STUDENT AND FULL-TIME WORKER.

Zontee says: Hi Dinell, yes, Heather will explain various parts of the pattern as she works through them–that’s precisely the value of a CAL–it allows you to gain the wisdom of everyone working on the pattern. No, there is no “deadline.” As it stated in my post above, the CAL will last through April, but you are welcome to work on the project at your own pace.

  • This is a beautiful jacket. Looking forward to the group working together.

  • Woohoo! An excuse to go to the store and buy YARN!!

This jacket is lovely, can’t wait to get started on it…

  • Hello to you all – I am British but living in Southern Spain and I really would like to join this CAL but need to work out what wool to use – a cotton is going to be best for me.

I taught myself to crochet about 5 yrs ago and have just started making garments – I have just completed a beautiful dress for my 2 yr old daughter.

Anyway look forward to joining you all on this once Iร‚ยดve got my yarn sorted!!!

Zontee says: Hi Pam, as I mentioned earlier, if you need help with UK/US equivalencies for yarn, check out our Yarn by Weights chart.

  • Hi! Like Shannon, I have too many projects started but what the heck this one looks so sharp. I think I will try it. I’ll just be behind you all. Thanks, LBY

  • Looking forward to joining in on the fun of this CAL! I’ve been knitting & crocheting since I was in my teens & am excited about this pattern. Can we share what types of yarn & colors are being used?

Zontee says: Hi Wendy, yes, of course you can share what colors and yarns you are using. You can also check out Heather’s latest post to see what yarns she recommends.

  • Count me in! I’ve been crocheting for years, about time I expanded my skills! Lissa ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Hi Heather…I wanted to crochet this sweater in another yarn and found a fabulous bamboo/silk blend, do you think this will work as long as I get the gauge right?

Also, is the purpose behind using 2 yarns to get the hand of the garment as lovely as possible? Or do we need the thickness/weight? I was just going to use the one yarn/ply.

    Thanks,
    KT

Zontee says: Hi KellyT, the purpose of the two strands of category 4 yarn held together is to get the weight/thickness of a category 6 yarn. If you would like to use one strand only, make sure that you substitute in a category 6 yarn and test the gauge. The type of fiber you use is up to you — as long as you’re happy with the texture, drape, and density of the fabric at the correct gauge, go for it. To see Heather’s latest post, go back to the main blog page at blog.lionbrand.com — hope that helps!

  • Hi! This will be my first crochet-a-long project- I hope I can get my yarn this weekend and get started!

  • This will be my first CAL, I am so excited. I voted for this jacket. I am a beginner crocheter and ready to start this project with so many of you. Please recommend a less expensive yarn that can be used for this jacket. Thanks

  • I have been crocheting for most of my life and I’m not much of a joiner, but since I’m laid off from my job, this seems like a great way to do something with a group that I can do from home. I’m excited to get my yarn and start. I hope I can keep up with all of you.

  • I started this project today and love the pattern. I am concerned though about the decreases as stated above – the lady said it disrupted the pattern. Should the pattern be like that or should there have been an adjustment?

Heather says: “Hi, Joyce: Althought the decrease row in the pattern is not wrong, it does “shift” the pattern by one stitch. In darker yarns, or where two different color yarns are used, this isn’t that noticable. However, I am doing this jacket in a light color – and that shift is more noticeable. What I did (and you can do if you wish) is to start with a sc on those rows that are “off” pattern and end the row with 2 sc (instead of the 1 sc). This will line up the stitch pattern for those rows – but for many of you, this shift will not be so noticeable.”

  • This a lovely pattern…shaping and stitch detailing in a modern style…I would like to see what this looks like on someone! [It’s beautiful on the hanger]. I’ve been crocheting and following patterns since Mom taught me the summer I turned 11. Very relaxing…

  • This will be my first CAL. I love to crochet and this look like fun, I’m starting to get board with hats. Thanks

  • The instructions say “end with a WS row” – I’m a newbie, what does that mean? (Wrong Side?) After the first row of the pattern stitch, do you work in the front loop of the previous row or go under both loops?

Heather says: “Hi, Sally: WS refers to the inside of the garment. After the first row, work under both loops of each stitch. Hope this helps you.”

  • I’m still working on the knitting project but I did download this jacket too.Hopefully I will be able to get them both done while my husband recovers from his heart surgery.I too would like alteratives to the cashmere yarn to save on the cost.

Zontee says: Hi Barbara, see Heather’s post for some affordable alternatives.

  • With a stash too big to mention, I am going with yarn and colors I have. I thought of a cream and a pale rose medium weight worsted. Perfect for evenings when a cool breeze whips up a nip in the air.
I had also thought about a chocolate brown heavy worsted with a variegated fine chenille for the fall.

  • I’ll be my first time CALing, too. Still lots of questions. Most improtant for me…I’ll need to make it longer. I’m a tall gal! Include helps for that, please.

Heather says: “Hi, Trish: This pattern is very adaptable to being made longer, just be sure to add the length before the armhole shaping.”

  • I am a very experienced crocheter and am looking forward to the CAL. I am so glad to see so many people who say they are beginners. I am going to go a different direction than most of you and probably substitue the Lion Suede for the wool. I have some in black and taupe that I think I will use together somehow – either in blocks or stripes. Will be swatching this week to find out. It is a Cat 5 yarn, so I will probably just use a larger hook to get gauge. I will post my swatches and progress on Ravelry (deedlesdesigns) for anyone interested in looking.

  • I’m a first time CAL’er, but have been knitting and crocheting for many years. I look forward to making a less expensive version of the jacket as well. It will be a nice change from the baby blankets I always have in the works (for charity).

  • I’m also a first time CAL’er, but have crocheted for years.

  • Hi I am Della and this is my first crochet along project. Have been crocheting for over 40 yrs. Have downloaded and created many of your free patterns from the Lionbrand website and they all turned out beautiful. Can’t wait to start this one although I voted for the sweater. Most of the patterns I’ve made were gifts for someone else but I have not had any complaints. I am also a member of Project Linus and have donated many of your afghan patterns to them for their charity. Thanks for having me along. Della

  • I purchased this pattern a few months ago and started croching it with a cheaper yarn. It isn’t too hard, but I stopped and decided to look for the correct yarn which I haven’t done yet. I have checked out the Mohair and Wool in other craft shops but so far have put it up until I find just the right yarn. Jean

  • This will be my first CAL but I need adjustments for size 3 X. I have not done anything by pattern before but know most of the abbreviations. I’ll give it a try. Brenda Lee

  • Hi i crocheted a dog coat and was sure surprized i could crochet!(knitter here) I want to give it a try and i know it will be fun and a challenge but count me in.Learning the lanuage of crochet is going to be my biggest quest.

  • I have been crocheting for years and am looking forward to making this project. Most everything I make ends up being a gift and I never seem to keep anything for myself. This will be a first for me.

  • =)
I loved this jacket when i saw it… showed it to my mom and she likes it too… we want to start as soon as possible =)
i love crochet xD and im just 22yrs old =D

  • Hi all this will be my first CAL. I hope I can keep up with all of you :-). I have been doing crochet for a long time I just never really finish anything ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I love to crochet, sew and knit, I just started a jacket (sewing)when I finish I will try this pattern

  • I’ve been knitting and crocheting since I was about 6 (I’m now 69!) I love to do new and modern things so this jacket is perfect. Just have to decide what colors. Off to the store tomorrow!

  • It’s really cool that we’ll be working together with so many people from all over the world. I am not an expert, but have been into crochet since my early childhood, about 35 years. Hope I can help some of you, while I’m sure I will learn much in return!

Shikha, The sizes are given in Small, with conversions in brackets. The first number in the bracket is medium. The second number in the bracket is large. To make size large, print your pattern, then go through the whole pattern and circle the second number in every set of brackets (I like to use a color pencil or highlighter).Use those numbers when you come to them.

Sally, yes “WS” means wrong side.

  • My first CAL. I’m a weaver, but also do sewing, crochet, and knitting (in my “spare” time outside the job). I’ve ordered 2 colors of cotton/bamboo for my jacket–more affordable and better for Texas weather.

  • This is my first time with CAL and I can’t wait to get started. This is great, I’m making this for ME! I always seem to make things for everyone else but me.

  • I taught myself to crochet in the 70’s, then taught myself to knit about ten years later. I haven’t crocheted in a long time, so this will be fun and interesting. I make little sweaters and dresses for the teddy bears I make, but I don’t make big articles often. I can’t wait to get started. Thanks!

  • Hi everyone, My name is Toni and I grew up in the big apple but now live in Ohio. This is my first time joining a CAL. I thought it would be a good way to get back into crochet so I’m thinking I’m going to need alot of help.I’m hoping to get to the store on sunday to get my yarn and get started.

  • Hi Ladies,
You have all made this sound so interesting that I think I’ll give it a try! Have crocheted for years and usually stick to baby blankets and occasional afghans. I tend to get bored and not finish but maybe if I can keep up with the group I will see this project through. That jacket is gorgeous. Will go and look for yarns tomorrow. The two Vanna yarns sounds interesting.

  • I’m looking forward to trying this one.

  • Hi everyone, My name is Toni. This is my first time Joining a CAL. but i can’t wait. I thought this would be a good way to get back into crocheting. So hoping to get to the store on sunday to pick out the yarn I would like to use. I’m thinking the cotton-ease. Since its been awhile that I”ve crochet a garment, I’m thinking I will need alot of help. Thanks

  • This is so exciting! I am an avid knitter and a little intimidated by crocheting, but my sister just whipped out 24 hats in about 2 days for my kids hockey teams so I figure there must be something to it. I’ve done market bags and scarves but this will be my first crochet garment. i love knitting sweaters in the round so hope the piecing works. I’m sure I’ll have lots of questions! Am using Vanna’s Choice in antique rose – NEED those spring colors!!!

  • Hi all,

I think this is a great pattern! This will be my first CAL, and I’m hoping it’ll force me to get it done! I’ve taught a beginner crochet class for years and always feel like a fraud, cause I don’t have any crocheted garments! It’ll need some resizing, tho – why do designers always assume us plus sizes are tall?! Crochet ON!

  • I am excited about the CAL. I have never done this before. Since I live in Florida I think I will do this in Cotton Ease. It is already in the 70″s & 80″s. As I am attending college also, I will be slow at completing the project. Bear with me!!!

  • I’ve never done a CAL before, but I’m intrigued with the idea. I’ve told myself all week that I’m too busy, but I keep thinking about how nice that jacket looks. I’ve crocheted since I was 8 (A long time ago!) and I’ve taught young ladies to crochet in 4H. My mother taught me and her mother taught her. Its in my genes, I think. I have always made things for others, never for myself. I want to make a Spring jacket and I’ve made my swatch. I’m also going to try it in Vanna’s Choice.

  • Looking forward to making a beautiful jacket! Thank you.

  • Hi,

I am very excited to get started with this project. Just recently I began to crochet again and I am glad that I did. It is the best relaxation and the best therapy.

    Cathy

  • I am also very excited. I will make this beautiful sweater for my new friend she is just this style!

  • Hello from southern Louisiana!
I’m really looking forward to doing this with all of you!

  • Well, I don’t need another project going, but I can’t resist. It will be my first CAL though I already had this jacket on my list of interesting patterns. I’m going to use Jiffy in Charcoal Mist and Vanna’s Glamour in Sapphire. Now I need to order the yarn and try to keep up.

A suggestion for those choosing cottons rather than wool. Cotton is heavier than wool, so a blend with acrylic, bamboo, linen, etc may be a better choice than 100 percent cotton.

As a side note – some have mentioned crocheted fabric being stiff. A crochet stitch is denser than a knit stitch, so using a larger hook helps the fabric to have a better drape. Many older patterns just used the comparable hook to knitting needle size (ie F hook = #5 needle) called for on yarn labels and this results in some pretty stiff garments.

So looking forward to crocheting with you all and reading your comments and suggestions.

Heather says: “Thanks, Cheryl – You are right that cotton can be heavier and more stiff than other fibers. Here’s another suggestion – many times cotton, bamboo and other plant fibers soften after they are washed. I would suggest that any of you out there using a yarn like this wash or dampen your swatch and then let it dry completely. You may be surprised how nice it turns out!”

  • Hi…
I’m Widya from Indonesia, an I’m new in knitting or crochetting. I just learn from the web. That’s a beautiful sweater but I still don’t know how to make it and I can’t find the supplier for a yarn like that here. So, may be I’ll try with other yarn.

  • Are the 2 strands necessary, does that give the fabric extra strength or stiffness to hold its shape? I’m wondering if you wanted to make a garment but with just 1 strand, do you need to adjust by choosing a bulkier yarn? or do you just need to stick to 2 strands as written.

Heather says: “Hi, Carol – Go to the first post of the CAL and then you can read about the types of yarn to use. There will be lots of information in the comments that follow the post as well.”

  • This is my first time joining a CAL, but I love this pattern and look forward to seeing how they all turn out!
    Cheers!

  • I am also fairly new to crocheting but loved the look of the jacket. I have started and am a little confused by the pattern you ch 1 sc2tog and ch 1 -sp. I know the last is ch 1 for space. In doing so I have two chains and am getting extra stitches what am I doing wrong. Thanks for the help and guidance.

Heather says: “Hi, Kathryn: The first ch1 in the pattern row is after you have turned your work and that ch1 is done once, then after that you repeat (sc2tog, ch1) across to the last st, and then you sc in the last st. Remember that the sc2tog decreases 2 stitches to one, and the ch1 increases by 1 so that there are 2 sts where there were 2 before.) I hope this will make it easier for you.”

  • I’m going to join, but I won’t be starting the project for a little while. I have a couple of other things going that I want to finish first.

  • Bonjour,

As you can see i’m francophone, from the province of Quebec. I will do my best not to do to much mistakes in my writting.

It is the first time i’m joining a CAL and i’m really happy about it.
Just can’t wait to start that beautiful jacket. I would like to make it only in one colour and in cotton – is this feasable.

I now have to remember to come on the blog once a week on thursday hihih

    Thank you

  • This is my first CAL. Finally got my yarn yesterday and started this last night. I chose Vannas choice to keep down the cost. I love the stitch and am excited to see how this turns out.

  • I’m with Kathryn #430. I have started just to get practice on the pattern and already am stumped. I know how to sc2tog, but when it says “sc2tog over next st, or sc2tog over first sc”, how can you just do one st when sc2tog uses 2 stitches? AND in the Dec Row it says to “sc2tog over first sc and ch-1 sp, (omit ch-1 for dec),” does that mean you undo the last ch-1 sp?

Sorry—–getting started is always the most difficult. Oh one more question that might be important when making garments (I have only made scarves, hats, aphagans), how can you tell the WS and RS in crocheting????

    thanks, Debbie

Heather says: “Hi, Debbie: Please check my response to Kathyrn and see if that helps. Thanks.”

  • Heather, thank you for the suggestions to keep the pattern – I have noted them on the pattern. I am making the jacket in a solid color and it will make a difference to me as I am anal about that sort of thing.

    Love it!

  • I actually made this jacket already with the recommended yarns. The jacket is for me and I did a large. The cahmere blend and lion wool are beautiful yarns. The jacket came out just about perfect. I want to follow the CAL so I can see if I can improve my crocheting. This is a lovely versatile jacket.

  • I am looking forward to doing this.

  • This is my first CAL – and my first attempt at anything other than simple crocheting. I would also like to make this jacket in something a little lighter weight, but I think for this first time, I’ll stick with the recommendations.

  • This is also my first CAL and first adult sweater. I have crocheted for my great grand daughter and she absolutely loves that sweater and it really isn’t perfect but its getting to small as she is growing fast. She is 3 and I am going to do a bigger one for her along with the Moderne Sweater. Couldn’t have come at a better time because I have my leg in a cast. Broke my lower leg in 2 places and am laid up for a least another month. Thank You Lion Brand for this opportunity to chat with others and make something pretty. Love you all Jani-Michigan

  • This will be my first CAL. I’ve known how to crochet for many years, but have always done very small projects, and no clothing. I am also guilty of having many unfinished projects. This will be a fun challenge!

  • I Love this jacket, and have been looking forward to this project. I am confused on the directions already. The Dec Row(RS) where it says “sc2tog over first sc and ch-1 sp, (omit ch-1 for dec)” Does this mean chain 1 and skip a space, after the sc2tog?

Zontee says: Hi Jodie, don’t forget to check Heather’s responses to the comments on her latest post or her response to comment #429 above, where she clarifies this topic.

  • I decided to go with Vanna’s Choice yarn in antique rose which is beautiful. I and am using 2 strands of it — will that be too heavy?

Heather says: “Hi, Pam – The best way to see is to make a swatch both single and double. Crochet is very adaptable, but the swatch will tell you how the fabric will look – so swatch away, everybody!”

  • I liked this jacket from the first time I saw it a year or more ago, but didn’t order due to the cost of the materials. The substitutions are great. I’ve ordered my yarn — Vanna’s Choice in Silver Blue and Vanna’s Glamour in Diamond — for a more summery color combination. It should be arriving on my doorstep in a few more days. Maybe this winter I’ll make it in the taupe/charcoal colors. I’m looking forward to the CAL, having done the KALa this past winter. Good information is shared. I’m excited about getting started. BTW,many of us have had wonderful grandmothers who taught us to crochet. I’ve just finished crocheting a couple of baby afghans and crib blankets for 2 different great grandchildren expected this summer, so I’m ready for a new project. Like many others, I’ve never crocheted a garment, usually knitting for those types of items, but have crocheted many, many full-size afghans, having made one for each of my grandchildren last year. Looking forward to all the comments and tips along the way.

  • Hi

I did the Cable Tunic for the last KAL – was originally supposed to be for myself but my daughter liked it so I gave it to her. Now I was looking for another project and this one has come along just in time. I hope to go look at yarn today. Crochet goes much faster than knitting so this one will definitely not take as long as the cable tunic took.

  • I feel in love with this jacket the moment I saw it. I haven’t ever tried anything like this before so I am looking forward to the challenge! Hopefully it turns out well enough to give to my Mom for Christmas!

  • This is my first CAL – I live in rual MS and am very excited to participate. I love to make baby items and afghans but have not made many clothing items. Am looking forward to this new experiece.

  • I don’t believe the question about the different quantities of yarn has been answered – why less of one color? Looking forward to this project – am also doing this one for me for a change!
    Thanks. Barbara

Zontee says: Hi Barbara, please see my answer to this question in comment #47. Lion Cashmere Blend and Lion Wool have different yardages per ball. Please see Heather’s latest post for recommended yardages per yarn so that you can substitute in other yarns.

  • Hooray it worked thank you, this is so wonderful it’s like going to a crocheting class but on line, I’m making mine in the lighter weight and in purple for the spring.

  • I just joined CAL. It sounds very interesting and very fun. I’m always looking for new patterns and others to talk to about crocheting.

  • Heather says(to #430): Remember that the sc2tog decreases 2 stitches to one, and the ch1 increases by 1 so that there are 2 sts where there were 2 before.) I hope this will make it easier for you.รขโ‚ฌย

This doesn’t make sense to me…there were 2 sts where there were 2 before? I still don’t understand.

What I wanted to know has to do with: The Dec Row(RS) where it says รขโ‚ฌล“sc2tog over first sc and ch-1 sp, (omit ch-1 for dec)รขโ‚ฌย Does this mean chain 1 and skip a space, after the sc2tog? Please help…I don’t understand how to do this…

Zontee says: Hi Jodie, it may be helpful for you to read Heather’s response to comment #24 on her latest post.

  • Hi! I’ve never crocheted anything for myself–master baby blanket & afghan maker over here!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰ So this will be an adventure just for me. I’m using Lion Wool in Dark Teal and Lion Cashmere Blend in Dusty Blue. I hope I’ll end up with a nice tweedy blue jacket……Good luck, everyone!

  • I’m new to crochet and this is my CAL. I’m very excited and hope this project is not TOO far over my head.

  • My first CAL. My husband says I have to use my “Stash” before I can buy new. So I will dig and see what will work. Wish me luck.

  • I am interested in using the Vanna’s yarn. Any suggestions on some color combos? I am going to get my yarn this weekend. I can’t wait to actually crochet a piece of clothing. (no blankets)

  • Picked my yarn, wool-ease, dk rose heather and rose heather my DD pick them out, did my swatch, I have to use an O hook and its my first CAL. This project will help keep me sane, I dislocated my shoulder and need something none physical to do.

  • Hi! just saw the email and am hitting the store tomorrow to pick yarns! My goal is to finish this project!! I have crocheted in the past, but just blankets. Thanks for offering this!

  • I have a huge amount of Lion Brand Suede in a beautiful rust color and would love to use this for the jacket, since it will be light weight for Los Angeles. Any thoughts on using the Suede and what its gauge might be?

Heather says: “Hi, Wendy: Try the Suede single strand and work up a gauge swatch adjusting your hook if necessary.

  • I would really love to join along, but I can’t afford the yarn for such a big project. I’ve got a bunch of odd and ends, that my caregiver gave to me. I live in a home for disabled and senior women. I’ve downloaded the pattern and will follow along to see how everyone is doing, and will buy a skein of yarn at a time. Perhaps by next year I’ll enough to make it with.

  • Hello from Orange Grove Texas I am totally new at this so help!

  • This is my first for CAL. I have crocheted for several years and I am looking forward to making this jacket. I’m going this weekend to get my yarn, probably something light.

  • This is my first CAL. I look forward to it. It looks like a fine way to keep the pace on a project. I have several projects working right now. the issue is always finishing. so I hope this will help me to keep focus on finishing within the season.
I think I too will try cotton.
I have knit sweaters but never crocheted one. I do crochet crafts or blankets so the jacket will be a new venture for me.
looking forward to the project and group interface
    thanks

  • Heather: I don’t think my question #434 and Kathryn’s #430 were completely answered. Can you take another look at them and fill us in? Thank you so much for your patience. I really want to do a good job on this (at least make it fit) ;’)

Heather says: Hi, Debbie: I think your question is about the decrease row? For the dec row, work the sc2tog as usual, but skip the ch1 after it and go right into to the pattern again starting with a sc2tog, then when you get to the end of the row, skip the ch1 that comes before the sc. This will decrease each side by 1 stitch (2 for the decrease row). Hope this helps you!”

  • Like post #458 I have lots of fuschia Lion Suede, (Bulky 5)that I want to use for this project. What yarn do I use with it? Any thoughts on a color combo with fuschia?

I also have lots of Chenille Thick & Quick (Bulky 6). Is this too heavy a yarn to use? I will be making size 2X – don’t want the jacket to be too bulky. Thoughts?

Heather says: “Hi, Margie: Either of those yarns should work well single-strand. Just make a gauge swatch and adjust your hook size as needed.”

  • I am excited to try to crochet a jacket…I knit sweaters, socks, mittens and anything else I can think of, but have never done anything with crochet except afghans and dishcloths…this should be fun!!! I am still trying to decide what yarn to use…I have several choices in my stash!!! I will probably do it with a tweed heather blue worsted weight using 2 strands together…I have to get a size N hook to make the gauge swatch…

  • I have never crocheted a jacket before this one. I am on the back piece at the second decrease row and need to start a second ball of yarn. Can I do this in the middle of the row? So do I just tie a knot? since it will hide in the pattern stitch?

Heather says: “Hi, Deb: It is usally best to join a new ball of yarn at the end of a row, so that you can hide the end in a seam. If you do add the yarn in the middle of a row just start with the new yarn (no knot) leaving ends that you can weave in the wrong side later.”

  • So glad the modern jacket is the choice! I’ve been needing a little black sweater or jacket… I played around with a swatch using LBY Landscapes and Wool-Ease and it is a fun pattern to work with. Now…which two black yarns…???

  • This looks very similar to a jacket I made a couple years ago. I went looking for it, but must have given it away. I am almost done with an afghan I started last week (see it on my site at http://www.crochet4charity.ning.com) so I think this just might be my next project. I can’t wait to shop for new yarn!! Thanks for the tips on types to use and quantities.

  • Hiรขโ‚ฌยฆ
    I am Henny from Batam-Indonesia
Actually, I would like to make the modern jacket but in Batam very difficlut to looking for the yarn, especially the cheap yarn.
    Any solution from Lion Brand?

  • This is my second CAL and looking forward to another fun project. I’ll be changing the yarn & color scheme like so many others are doing.

  • This is my first CAL and i am so excited. This should be a lot of fun!

  • This is the second time I’ve posted. The first one for some reason didn’t show up. I’ve ripped out the back twice now.The first time I didn’t have enough stitches after the first 2 decs. The second time because all the decs were on one side???? I tried to keep the pattern. So this time I just did it(didn’t try to keep the pattern) & it seems to be working.

  • This is my first CAL and I am so excited because this jacket is soooo cute!!! Heather, thanks for the yarn tips because I am allergic to wool and was wondering how yarn choice will affect gauge (I’m self taught and still figuring things out). I can’t wait to go choose my colors! This will be fun!

  • I live in Kure Beach, NC and am going to give this a try. This is my first CAL and will be my first sweater too. I’ll make it for fall/winter. Can’t wait.

  • This is my first CAL. I am a new crocheter and sometimes struggle with pattern interpretation. I am working on my swatch and it doesn’t look at all like the swatch pictured in the March 12 notebook posting. I must be doing something wrong! Can anyone share with me what they are doing to get the pattern right? Thank you in advance!

Heather says: “Hi, Tobi: If your pattern is working out even, then it may be right. I’ve noticed that this stitch looks a little different depending on the yarns used. If you are getting the gauge then I would go with it!.”

  • Something I forgot to ask, since I live in Belgium, is there a conversion chart anywhere?
Like the metric for a size N crochet hook and 900 yards of yarn

Heather says: “Hi, Anyk: A size N crochet hook is a 10mm.
-And here is a conversion for yardage to meters:
    1 meter = 1.094 yard
    1 yard = 0.9144 meter

Zontee says: Hi Anyk, you can also click here for a conversion chart.

  • Hi! I have decided to join this CAL. It is my first, and I am really excited about this project! I have some experience with making afghans, but not making clothing. It will be a fun challenge!

  • Hello,
I’m willing to try this styling jacket. If I make it through the finish line, it will be the first garmet I’ve crochet other then a vest which I never wore but once. I hope there is help if I get stuck. If it works out I will take pictures of each step I finish and post it on my Windows Live Space for my family to see.

  • Can you clarify the dec in the Raglan Shaping on the Back. Do I use the row 1…sl st across first 2 sts?? or the Dec row above omitting the ch-1 space? for Row 3 Raglan Shaping. thanks

Heather says: “Hi, Deb: Row 1 is where you sl st across the first 2 stitches, work in pattern across, but don’t work the last 2 stitches. The decrease rows after this are the same as for the lower back of the jacket.”

  • Have never ventured into making anything other than afghans, placemates—-so this will be a challenge! But I”m going to atempt it.

  • Hi all,
I am Angelika from Cologne, Germany. This gorgeous pattern made me chrochet again after decades. I had to spend several hours until I managed the pattern stitch (hope it is right at all ;-), but the explanations here in the thread helped me to decipher the abbreviations. Thank you!
Great project – I hope I will be able to cope with the decreases and increases as well … It’s good to know that I can ask ๐Ÿ™‚
    Regards
    Angelika
P.S.: I use a Cotton-Polyamide-Mix (tara from ggh), quite soft and hopefully not too warm for such a summer jacket.

  • I ordered my yarn from Joann’s today, I’m using the woolease thick & quick fig color. Can’t wait. My first CAL.

  • I am so excited about this project

  • Hi there, all. I was stunned to see such a great turnout to this introductory post. Obviously this is my first CAL and I am looking forward to learning a new stitch. The pattern is very “chic” and I can see it appeals to allot of crocheters (from other countries as well!)
I will probably order my yarn from Herrschners, as they have been able to meet my needs over many years at competitive prices. The Vanna’s Choice and Glamour appeal to me for this jacket. Only I can’t decide whether to make my first one for myself or my daughter. Maybe I will end up making 2!

  • Hi! This is my first CAL. After seeing the pretty tunic pattern in the KAL and thinking it might be time consuming I downloaded the pattern, recently, and hope to make it. I’ve been knitting for many a year and crocheting almost as long. I bought Vanna’s Choice in Denim Twist and Silver Blue, yesterday, for the CAL project. Thought it would go with jeans or just about anything. I see many people have already started. I have a huge yarn stash so nobody had better open our closet doors or they could be buried under yarn. Well, it is lighter than a lot of other things people stash. Ha! Ha! Glad I’m not the only one that gets carried away with yarn buying.

  • Hi! I signed up for the CAL on Mar 10 and also joined the CAL group on Ravelry.

Here’s the thing. My account on Ravelry, “Ulfsparre”, was suspended on Sat, Mar 14, 2009. I was part of a group of conservatives, all of whom have also been suspended. Does Lion Brand support Casey Forbes’ actions?

  • Thanks Heather for your previous response. I did my gauge swatch (first time ever doing one!) Dumb question – after the foundation row, instructions say “work even in pattern.” Does this mean to continue the same repetition as the foundation row?

If I want to make the jacket longer, do I add inches to the 3 1/2 in piece on the back before I begin to decrease? If not, where do I add?

    Thanks!!

Heather says: “Hi, Margie : The foundation row is only done once then the every row after that is the instructions for the pattern stitch which is found under the “Stitch Explanation” part of the pattern. Then, as for lengthening the pattern, do that before the armhole shaping for the best results.”

  • I have a question on the row following a decrease row. If you make a sc 2 together in the first 2 st. no matter what they are ( sc2tog, chain or sc) then for just that row you are doing the st in a different order. You are working in a chain sp then a st. instead of in st then chain 1 sp. I am concerned that this will throw off the over all look of the pattern. Is this a concern?
    Thanks

Heather says: “Hi, Pat: I will talking about that in my next post this week, but if you notice the shift (many won’t because of the yarn they use), I just worked an extra sc at the beginning and end of the rows that were “off” pattern. Hope this helps you with your jacket.”

  • I’ve signed up for this and it should be a challenge as I haven’t been crocheting much since I got back into my knitting/crocheting a couple of years ago. I did make an afghan and do some work on finishing knitted things, so this will give me an excuse to “brush up” on my skills again. I did a lot of crocheting when I was younger. This is such an attractive jacket I couldn’t resist, and with the help of the group I feel a bit more secure if I run into any problems. Thanks much for agreeing to help us out!

  • Please help. Can someone walk me through the basic pattern stitch – not enough to tell me sc or sp.
I have tried to do the swatch and it does NOT look like the sample one.
I need a step by step walk through.
    Thanks.

Heather says: Hi, Evelyn: Please look at the next post of the CAL about gauge – I have responded to many questions about the pattern stitch – so you may want to read those responses. If you need help understanding a certain stitch command you may want to go to the “Learning Center” on the Lion Brand website homepage.”

  • Now I’m getting brave. I have just “re-learnt” how to crochet and I’m bitten by a mad crochet hook! I can’t wait to see whether, with a bit of help from my friends, I can manage to recreate this wonderful wee jacket.

  • Can I use two strands of the same yarn for this project?

Heather says: “Hi, Pam: You can use two strand of the same yarn as long as they are worsted-weight. Please look at my post about gauge and I’m sure this will help you.”

  • Hello to everyone. I am so excited to be connecting with people who have the same passion as myself. I have been crocheting since I was 8. My grandmother lived with me and I used to sit and watch her crochet all the time and one day she finally got sick of my looking over her shoulder all the time and gave me a hook and said, here its time you learn. Within 2 weeks I had made my first poncho.

Anyway—I have chose Wool-ease in cocao and denim beause they are the closest I could come to the original colors in the picture that made me vote for this jacket in the first place. Have found that the N hook is working fine and have 1-1/2 of the front panels made.

Looking forward to reading about everyones adventures.

  • I am using two strands of the same color – Vanna’s Choice Linen – I do have a question also. This may sound “I don’t know dumb” but we do crochet into both stitches – not just into the back stitch – I have the back just about done and maybe it is too late to ask this question, but thought others may wonder also.

Hope all are having a wonderful day.

Heather says: “Hi, Joyce: Yes, make sure to go under both loops of each stitch, not just the back.

  • Wow…this is sooo awesome to see all these crocheters and knitters blogging along and working together for this CAL. I have see my emails come in regarding this KAL’s and CAL’s, but this last voting I participated in..and the Moderne Jacket was what I had voted for!! This will be my first “CAL”, and I know I am starting a bit late…but I do love the look if this jacket. 3/4 sleeves are my favorite!!
I have lots of yarn in my stash, and will need to check out which to combine!! I do have several projects going right now, as I have a new grand baby and belong to my own group who have lovingly named ourselves the “Knotty Knitters”..
Making articles of clothing is my new endeavor.
Good luck to all and I will be checking in from time to time for help, I am sure!!
    Happy Crocheting xoxoxoxoxoxox

  • Your response to 391 should read “sc”, not “dc”, right?

Heather says: “Thanks Rene – You are right and I changed it!”

  • Hi from Ontario, Canada. I bought a very earthy combination of green and mushroom brown Friday. I think I should have had at least a third of the back done that night, but I kept ripping out to fix where I lost track of the pattern. Serves me right for trying to watch a movie and start a new stitch at the same time! Love how this stitch works up though.

  • My first choices of color combos or yarns didn’t look as good as I thought it would. Wound up using Vanna’s choice in Taupe with a chocolate brown chenille. Gives it a lovely soft texture with a pretty tweedy effect that should go well with dresses or slacks.

  • Hi! This looks like alot of fun. I’m not interested in making this prodject, but I’m sure I’ll find things in the future I will be interested in making. I love to crochet, bead, plastic canvas, scrapbook, stamp, emboss, make cards plus many more crafts. These are the things i’m basically doing now. look forward to keeping in touch with the site and postings, till next time, Mary

  • OK NOW I HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION.ROW 1 OF RAGLAN SHAPING YOU DECREASE FROM 59 STS(SIZE 1X) TO 55 STS.THATS 4 STITCHES DECREASED.THEN IN ROW 3 DECREASE, SAME AS ROW 1 BUT YOU ONLY DECREASE 2 STITCHES. THIS IS NOT MAKING SENSE TO ME. PLEASE COMMENT.

Heather says: “Hi, Kay: Row 1 for the Raglan shaping is only done once, which dec 2 sts at each edge. Row 3 says to do a dec row (like the first dec row in the lower back). Then you repeat rows 2 and 3 after that. Hope this helps you!”

  • I couldn’t choose which project to do, but I am excited to work on the Moderne Jacket as my first CAL! Look forward to learning more about crocheting from others!

  • Heather, I haven’t bought my yarn yet….I would like to use Vanna’s yarn. What do you think of Taupe and Chocolate Sparkle??? Please advise.
Thank you so much. I feel so behind everyone, I haven’t even got my yarn yet. I can’t wait to begin.

  • I just want to say that this has(so far) been the best learning experience for me! I’m currently working on the raglan shaping and everything up to that point is coming out perfect. My local Hobby Lobby didn’t have the selection of Vanna’s choice as some of you are choosing (they sound like wonderful combos), and I didn’t want to wait for an order, so I chose two worsted weight yarns in chocolate and linen. It looks beautiful, but I think it will be a little heavy. If this comes out like I hope, I will try a different blend. The choices are endless!

Heather: a special thank you for answering all my questions!

    Debbie in Minnesota

  • Hi, everyone. I have finished the back and one side. I am very pleased with the project so far. My daughter visited yesterday and, of course, would like me to make one for her, too. In black and light blue, please, size small and shorter so she can wear it over her skimpy little t shirts. I’ll get right on that…

  • Help…I made my swatch and it was perfect. Am working on the back, the rows are fine, but the st width is about 1 inch less. How do I correct this?? I like the way the texture is, so do I just add more sts?

  • Hi;
I, too, have a question about the sizing. Is the bust measurement listed the size of the jacket itself, or the size of the person who is going to fit into the jacket? In other words, is ease built into those measurements, or do we need to add that to the wearer’s actual bust measurement?
This is such a lovely jacket, and looks like it will work up fairly quickly. Thanks for voting for it, all!

  • I tried swatching the Wool Ease Thick & Quick, and at a K hook it was still not right. I’ve always enjoyed working with that yarn. Decided that the Wool Ease Chunky would work (though I’ve never used it), just a matter of gauge, the right hook. I’ll be late getting started. Have to mail order everything here. Oh, chose the Willow color.

  • Hi everyone

This is my first CAL and the first crochet garment I will have made for at least 20 years. I normally knit (a lot) and do know how to crochet, but havn’t always been thrilled with the look of crocheted garments. I voted for this cute jacket because I thought the texture was lovely, and the jacket would hold its shape when completed. Now, I need to choose a color and buy the yarn.

    What fun this will be!

  • I have crochet simple items like scarfs and hats. How to I determine what level crocheter I am. I love this jacket but don’t have enough confidence try. Are there any others where this will be their first piece of clothing?

  • My first CAL, really looking forward to it

  • I was so excited to see that Lion Brand was having another CAL. I did one this winter with the squared afghan and loved it! I love this pattern, but hope it is not too difficult for me since I have only done scarfs and afghans mostly. I am hoping for lots of help. Also I decided to do a “prototype” in a cheap yarn first to see if I can do it then I will do one in a real nice more expensive yarn if it works.

  • this is my first CAL, have picked my yarn, done my swatch, and crocheted half of the back….what a great pattern, so easy.

  • confused again..left front..After the dec row, 30 sts. The even number does not leave space for the last sc.
How to work even when the last st is a ch 1. There is no space for sc, so do I ch 1 again and then turn? if so, where does the next row start? the pattern will not be even?

  • I have crocheted for years pretty basic things. Afghans, scarfs, dolies and other string crochet items. This CAL is new to me and so is the blogging. I am not sure I understand how either works. Sounds even to me like I’m in over my head. Do I just get supplies and start in?

Zontee says: Hi Joyce, that’s right. Just jump on in. For more on how to participate in a crochet-along or knit-along, click to see our guide from our first KAL.

  • Hi Everyone,
This too is my first time making a fitted garment as well as joining a Cal. I’m not sure how well I’ll keep up with the blog but it sounds like fun. I’m growing bored with shawls and afghans.
I’m going to make my sweater in leaf green and rose.
Thanks for all the help already. I love this site!!

  • Many thanks Heather. Presently working on the Elegant Shawl. As soon as I am done with it, I will take up this project. Eagerly waiting & excited about starting the Moderne Jacket Crochet Along project soonest.

  • So now I’m a bit confused. After the foundation row, do I make the chain 1 at the end of that row and then turn? And what does sl. st. mean on raglan decrease? Do I stop short of the last two stitches and then turn? (as in short rows for knitting?) Please help. Thanks.

Heather says: “Hi, Wendy: Yes, you ch1 before you turn for each row. The sl st at the raglan edge, has you just sl st in the first 2 sts which will shape for the underarm and then you do not work the last 2 stitches on the other side of the row.”

  • Hi everyone! I have too many projects going as it is, but I really like this pattern and I’ve never done a knit/crochet-along. It might take me longer than everyone else to get done, but I still think it will be fun!

  • Kelly, I am with you on that. I, too, have three projects going and 4 more in my mind, but I started this one also. I’ll be holding up the rear too! Should be fun!

  • Will there be more posts from Heather, if so, where can I find them?

Zontee says: Hi Linda, just hit the “Blog” button at the top of the page or go to blog.lionbrand.com for all new posts. Heather’s posts will go up on Thursdays. If you want to see JUST posts on our CALs, click the “crochet-along” button on the right-hand bar, under “categories.”

  • Hi: I am going to try this, also first timer, and I will be helping Linda hold up the rear. I too live in a way out town and it will be tomorrow before I can get going but I am looking forward to receiving help with any problems I could have with my FIRST garment. I will be making this for my daughter, 38 with two children and works FT. I love to crochet on Sundays while hubby watches racing and ballgames.

  • I’ve got the back done. I liked the picture of the jacket and so have chosen Vanna’s Choice Charcoal grey and Chocolate. I love the results! Hope everyone is having a great time with this.

  • This is great! – I did not know this kind of thing existed and would love to crochet along – I am already behind (don’t have my yarn yet). I am really good at crochet – been doing it a long time. I am TERRIBLE at picking out colors. I was thinking of following the leader – somewhat – and choosing Vanna’s Choice (860-127 Espresso) with Vanna’s Glamour (861-134 Copper). Anyone think that would look good – or have a suggestion? I want to make it somewhat dark, (brown, gray, black, purple)- altho tempted to just go with beige and topaz like the leader – beautiful choice.

Zontee says: Hi Vicki, I think that your Espresso/Copper combination sounds great! I think a sparkling brown will go with a lot of different outfits. Hope you enjoy!

  • On the decrease rows, the pattern not longer lines up. Is there a fix for this? And or the raglan shaping, is there no turning chain?

  • Hi Kim #509: I too am a first time garmet maker!! Always stuck with scarves, aphaghans although I have been branching out making mittens and disclothes this year. Don’t give up—I didn’t and I have finished the back. The directions and support from this blog are great! I have amazed myself that everyting has come out the way it should so far. I am hopeful that the rest of the jacket will be just as grand!

    Debbie in Minnesota

  • I got started on the back of mine last evening. I somehow think I ended up with one less stitch on the row following the first decrease row but will figure out what I did, or didn’t, do. The Denim Twist color Vanna’s Choice with her Silver Blue looks soooo good together. Love it. Love reading all the postings here. Everyone is doing great!!

  • In looking back over the previous posts, I found the answers for the decrease row. It’s still a bit confusing to line up the pattern so that it’s not off by that one stitch. I’ll wait until Thursday for the new post to do the decrease row. Is it possible for you to rewrite the decrease row to reflect the sc on each end so that the pattern continues to line up? Also, can the answers be posted in a different color than the questions? Thanks.

  • Hi everyone, to all of you just getting your wool, don’t feel you’re so far behind. This pattern works up very quickly when you get going. The back will work up in a few hours, even if you rip out a lot to make corrections, like I seem to! The posts in this thread are very helpful. Thanks.

  • The jacket turned out beautiful! I just love it, especially the buttons. I had purchased buttons, thinking I wouldn’t like the crocheted ones, but ultimately made them and like them much better. My mom loved it too, so I think she’ll get the second one.

Zontee says: Hi Julie, congrats on finishing your jacket! Share your pictures in our Customer Gallery and then share a link here so everyone can see!

  • I just love catching up with how everyone is doing! Is there anyone in Sioux Falls, SD that is participating? I have the back done, and checked the sizing, and so far everthing measures out perfectly. I did add a couple of inches to the length, as things tend to be short on me. I started the left front this evening. I am using Vanna Choice Charcoal and Chocolate, and really like the combination.

  • Yay, I finally got it!! Redid the back, up to 8″ (again), but this time it is straight. If I can get to the raglan shaping, I’ll consider myself very lucky. Reminds me of an abbreviated version of the star stitch without the sc return row.

  • Hi from Philly,

This is my fist online CAL. The crochet I have down it is the blogging and online chat that will be the challenge for me.

Are there any other CGOA member doing this jacket? I am so excited I can wait to get started I am using using cotton ease and micro-spun in hot colors for the spring.

  • Becky, regarding prayer shawls for men. In our group we make the same shawls but in the darker colors. The heather type turn out beautiful. Homespun is a good one to use.

  • Think I am changing to Vanna’s Choice Honey with Vanna’s Glamour Topaz to brighten it up – you only live once – I need more flair (lol) – was hubby’s suggestion, my color master

Note on prayer shawls for men – there are 2 great urban wrap patterns on this site(search urban wrap – I did pattern 997) – made in manly colors they are a great FULL wrap for men. I made one for myself – in Fiesta – my hubby wears it all the time around the house and on the boat. I made another one in Metropolis for my sister – her hubby wears it too. The painterly or tweed yarns look best with this pattern – painterly being my favorite, although the Metropolis came out just as nice if not better. I also adjusted the pattern on my second try to make the front 10 stitches longer to ‘even it out’ as the front tends to come out shorter than the back when you actually assemble and wear it.

  • I too need help with the Raglan Dec.. was doing fairly well up until that point.. had to frog a few times on the first dec.. but made it thru.. this has me really flustered. I’m so glad to see that I’m not alone. This is my first CAL and am so excited to read all the posts and others ideas as far as color and yarn choice!

  • PRAYER SHAWLS FOR MEN

I completely messed up on my post regarding the pattern change for the urban wrap. (#534)

When assembled and worn – the front hangs longer – so I made the front 5 stitches shorter and the back 10 stitches longer – evens it out for wearing. Oh my gosh am so sorry about that – checked my notes – never trusting memory again. I will also post these notes in the comments on the actual pattern as well. So sorry about that

  • Hi from the Twin Cities! This is my first CAL. I’ve been crocheting for 14 years. About two years ago I branched out from baby blankets and started making sweaters and stuffed toys/animals for the infants and toddlers in my life. This will be the first project I do for myself. I chose to do the pattern in two strands of Wool-Ease in “Wood”.

  • Hi everyone,This is my first crochet along. I am excited about crocheting along with other people on the same project and comparing notes. I have been crocheting for a very long time and have never had good luck with clothing but I am going to try again. Any good tips with crocheting sweaters? thanks

  • Just joining in…finally got my yarn. I did my swatch and the stitch is already confusing. This is my first crochet project that is not an afghan or scarf. I love the feel of the yarn and really want to succeed in this project. But I figure if I fail, I can always have a wool and cashmere afghan.

  • Joanna – look at post #14 above – there is a good explanation of the stitch there.

Chris – I will share 2 tips that helped me with making clothes, I too used to struggle, but now have some items I have made and actually wear!

    1) measure measure measure – not just what you are working on according to the pattern, but find something you own – as similar in cut as you can (and make sure you love how it fits you). Lay it out and take similar measurements – that match those on the pattern. Making sure that the size you are making matches those measurements as close as possible will give you confidence that it will fit you when you are done. Keep measuring your work as you go to ensure you are on track. I found this tedious at first – but after I saw how it pays off, I really got into it.

    2) blocking – this is the end step and I used to never block anything – boy that was a mistake – makes all the difference in the world. I am hoping the group will share some tips on blocking as people get to this step. I have found it a hard topic to get info on, still struggle with it a bit – but it is well worth the effort and really makes clothes hang well. Blocking will also help you get the final measurements of the pieces correct for assembly – really improves the shape of your work.

Still waiting for my yarn to arrive…

  • To Vicki V—-the blocking, do you do that before you sew the pieces tog? Hope that is explained as we get to it. My first time making a sweater. So far my pieces are coming out with the right measurement and I don’t want the blocking to mess it up if I don’t do it right!!

    Debbie in Minnesota
P.S. Hi to Deb R in Twin Cities—I’m in Rochester!

  • To Debbie T – I always block before assembly – so much easier to work with smaller pieces and one layer. I never reblock the finished garment – I think some people do.

  • very goodddddddddddddd

  • Hi–
This is my first time to join a CAL, I think the jacket is pretty, but am changing the colors to 2 blues to fit what colors I wear. Have been knitting and crocheting since I was 10 40 years now. Looking forward to the progress.

  • Hi
I’ve been interested from the beginning, and I don’t think I’ve left a sign-up comment yet, so I’m biting the bullet and committing now!
    Thanks
    WendyBee

  • Wow! I’m looking forward to giving this a try! I have never joined a CAL nor done an entire garment, but this jacket looks so adorable, I have to make one for myself! I’ll probably have to make two more so my daughters don’t steal mine.

  • I’ve finished! I just need to add buttons. I decided to buy some instead of making them, so that they slip through better. I also added a row of single crochet around the entire finished project, to tidy up the edges. Tomorrow I will start over again on a tiny version as a birthday gift for my daughter. She turns 18 next month.

  • I have a lot going already, but I want to experience a CAL, so I’m going to try this one out. So sorry I missed the cable luxe tunic KAL. . .Looking forward to learning and building my confidence as a crocheter and a knitter with LBY :).

  • I was looking on the Flickr group for the CAL, and there is a beautiful example of the jacket pictured on display in NYC. . .my question is how do I change my pattern to get the look of that jacket (longer, and more shaping at the waist). It’s gorgeous, and that shape would look so much better on me than the one pictured in the pattern. I haven’t started yet, so I wanted to get suggestions as to changes and additional yarn yardage estimates to make it like the one on Flickr.

    Thanks!

  • My first Cal, too. I started knitting a few years ago & just started to crochet. So thrilled to have all your wisdom & guidance for my first project beyond a shawl!

  • This will be my first CAL. I’m looking forward to it. I definitely will use lighter weight yarn for spring.

  • This is my first CAL and project that wasn’t a scarf or afghan so gauge is very important. I am purchasing my yarn tomorrow and will do the gauge. I need to know how long everyone will be here to help me with questions since I will be soooooooooo far behind. When is the CAL finished?

  • Becky, you were looking for a prayer shawl pattern for a man. I think that the pattern on this website would work for either male or female: http://www.shawlministry.com/
    Good luck!

  • I’m looking forward to trying this! This is my first CAL! It wont be easy, but should be a lot of fun!

  • I am very excited to try this, I have done a lot of knitting and crochet, but never a wearable. I think I can…. I am going to get the cotton ease I live in South Ga

  • Hi I am new to this CAL, so forgive me if I do some mistakes. This is going to be so much fun. I have to pick out my yarn, but am leaning toward Moonlight Mohair with another of course. I just love the mohair.

  • Hi, like many of you I am new to CALs and also new to reading this type of pattern. I have 2 questions regarding row 1 of the raglan shaping on the back:
1st – the pattern just says to turn and does not say to ch1 and turn, is this correct or should there be a ch1?
2nd – after the 2 sl st there is a ch1, do I count the ch1 in my 39(45,49,55,59) sts? If I do count it, it seems to throw my number of stitches off…help!?

  • I have finished the back and the left side!!! This is my first CAL and my first garment. I’m so excited. My question: Can you give me an example of what “reversing all shaping” is for the Right side? I follow the pattern the same as the left side until I get to the Raglan shaping? Then, ? I’m not sure how to proceed. Thanks!

  • This is also my first CAL. I’m using Vanna’s Choice in Dusty Blue and Linen. It will go great with jeans. I’ve started on the back. I also would like to know how to do the reverse all shaping for the right side of the jacket. I love reading all the posts.

  • This is my first time making something to wear. I will be trying the cotton ease yarn.

  • In response to Ginger, 557. You are basically starting your row two stitches over. You slip stitch twice to get to that place and then start your row as you normally would, by chaining once. You may want to mark the indentation with a safety pin so that on your return row you do not accidentally work those two stitches.

  • I can’t get the pattern> I am computer-challenged/ what am I doing wrong?

Zontee says: Hi Ann Marie, we’ve e-mailed you directly. Please check your e-mail.

  • I just opened my CAL email and I think I missed the download window. It must have switched at midnight eastern time? Can I still get the pattern?

    Thanks.

    Lisa

Zontee says: Hi Lisa, we’ve e-mailed you directly. Please check your e-mail.

  • i love crothet very much, but i m very busy working mom with 4 chidren i hope i can do sone cal thank and think that will be a lot of fun

  • I requested a free pattern, #60617AD Lion Brand Moderne Jacket. My internet wasn’t working properly and it didn’t go through. Now it is March 24, and the deadline was yesterday. May I please download the free pattern anyway? I bought all the materials and made a special trip out-of-town to do so. It would be a shame not to have the pattern. Please let me know what to do. The pattern won’t download at this point. Thanks so much. By the way, I’ve tried other brands of yarn, and Lion Brand is always best.

Zontee says: Hi Denna, we’ve e-mailed you directly. Please check your e-mail.

  • I finished putting the button on today and will wear it tomorrow. I did use purchased buttons. I made one crocheted button and it seemed to big for the chain one space. Instead of trying to do reverse shaping, I just made 2 the same. Both sides look alike. I love it. Just right for the really cold weather we are getting.

  • This is a first KAL or CAL for me, am excited to see all the different results.

  • To Margie and Margaret, since the pattern stitch is the same on the front and back, just make two left sides and turn the piece over for the right side.

  • This is a great project. I am using Vanna’s Choice in Sea Spray Mist and Caron Spa Bamboo blend in Green Sheen. Green is my favorite color at the moment.I live in Florida so this jacket will be a bit warm now,but look forward to next winter. Thank you for all sharing your frustrations and advice it has been very helpful. If you want good info. on blocking,Jan Eaton’s 200 Crochet Tips,Techniques&Trade Secrets has wonderful information on several types of blocking and finishing with good photos on how to.

  • Heather mentions that keeping the pattern in line was a “bit trickier” for the raglan shaping. Could you please explain how she did it, because I would like to keep the pattern in line as well but don’t want to mess up the raglan shaping. Appreciate your help –

  • Rene’ thank you for your suggestion (#568) about doing 2 left sides and turning one over. I thought of that, but I’m using Lion Suede and the shadings will be different because the second left side, when I turn it over to become a right side will be on the wrong side and show the stitch differently, I think?!?

Zontee says: Hi Margie, as Heather describes in her latest post, the stitch pattern is reversible, so if you don’t mind a slight difference in the bottom edges, it should not be an issue.

  • Hi everyone how are you all? I am from Ireland.

  • Hi again! Even with my years of crochet experience, this one has me going. With my two colors combined it looks right to me with the stitch pattern, finally. Have taken out rows several times thinking it wasn’t right, only to decide I had it right the first time. Ha! Ha! Oh, well.

  • Sue#573- Im with you,Sue.I’m working on the second front piece which I just frogged for the second time last nite. This has turned out to be very challanging.Ha

  • Hi everyone! This is my first crochet-along, and I’ll be honest, the first crochet garment I actually thought I’d wear. I’m still on the back piece, but it is going nicely. I am being very methodical, which is against my nature and probably why I never want to wear anything I create. I love the yarn. It is so soft and the combination of the colors looks great.

  • My first CAL ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m primarily a knitter, and crocheting has been done mostly on blankets and shawls. It should be interesting making a more structured garmet.

I chose Vanna’s Choice Denim Mist and Colonial Blue. The tweed will not be as pronounched. I love the color together and think it will be a jacket that I can dress up or down. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ll check my guage tomorrow.

  • Hey All,
Isn’t this fun? I’m finally on the left front. I lost track of how many times I ripped out rows on the back trying to get the decrease correct. But now it seems to be falling in place. I like the idea of doing 2 left sides and then the row of sc around the edge. Work smarter, not harder.
Anyway, my words of wisdom…Don’t give up!! Keep trying and with all the help on this blog we can all have a jacket.

  • I forgot to ask Kay in 574…frogged???

  • Got the back done. The guage for me surely took a different needle size. It’s coming out a little bit oversized, but I’m liking the extra ease. I was surprised that it was so different, but I am substitute Vanna’s choice for the suggested yarn. It’s looking pretty good; we’ll see. I’m a little concerned about the sleeves, but I’ll cross that when I get to it.

    ๐Ÿ™‚

  • About Kay in 574 and ‘frogged’, I think it means ripped out a few rows. Took me awhile to catch on when I first saw that term used. I’m still puzzling on whether my decreases look equal on the back, which I am still working on. Oh, well.

Zontee says: Hi Sue, you’re correct. “Frog” is a a slang term that comes from the sound of having to “rip it, rip it” (ribbit ribbit like a frog, see?).

  • Becky there is a nice prayer shawel book I got from Amazon. You might find an idea there Ann

Zontee says: There are definitely some great prayer shawl books out there. The Prayer Shawl Mininstry and The Prayer Shawl Ministry Vol. 2 are great additions to any collection, with patterns, stories from groups and individuals, beautiful prayers, and even a guide to colors and their meanings.

  • Well, so far so good. I did get my yarn and have the back, left front and most of the right front done. It looks really pretty and everything has gone smoothly so far. It is going pretty quickly when I have time to sit down and work on it. Most of my previous crocheting was on “granny squares” when they were so popular in the past. Made lots of things for my kids as they were little then. This is lots more sophisticated. They have really pretty patterns now for crocheting which weren’t available back then.

  • Working on the collar right now. My sleeves don’t seem to be quite as long as in the pic. Wonder what I did wrong. Oh well, I like anyways. Hope to wear on Sunday.

  • I am still I must be the only one still on the back – have torn out many times as I did not think the pattern followed correctly.

I am going to do it. I am a craftaholic and work on many projects at one time. So I fit them all in and love doing it.

Is everyone going to put a picture of their jacket online when finished. I may be the last one to do so, but will!

    Enjoy Easter everyone!

  • Rather than reading thru everyones comments to find a good explination about how to do the decrease secion after the first 3 1/2 inches could someone explain it to me a little more clearly as to what I am to do to get to the raglan shaping? Thanks Ann

  • hello
I am french and I love your website because we can find really fashion and modern patterns which is not the case in France. All you can find here is how to do stuff for women over 80… or from the 19th century…
anyway, I am trying to do this modern jacket and I already have a probleme because I would like to use cotton and the gauge is not as the picture. I don’t understand, on the picture, it seems that the stiches are in relief (like working in either the front loop or back loop of a stitch).
    Is this correct?
or the difference I get is only because I switch the yarn?
    thanks
    stephanie

  • Reynaud, The pattern stitch is offset by one stitch on each row from the previous row. I always look to the 2nd row below to match my stitches up so that the crochet 2 together is straight above the same stitch 2 rows below. Does that make sense? No crocheting into the back of any stitches.

  • Hi
thank you. I will care and work more carefully
    have a good day
    stephanie

  • I hope this blog is still up and running, it’s May 2, and I know it was to run through April. I need some HELP! I got through the jacket just fine but my last page of instructions, is MISSING! (Probably my dog . . . just last week I found what was left of my glasses in his dog pen. He’s lucky that he’s so cute) Anyway, I don’t remember if the collar is to be 3 1/2 or 4 1/2″ and I don’t know how to make the buttons. Can someone help? If not, guess I’ll just buy buttons and stop the collar at 4″ when the good edge shows. Thanks

  • I went to the blog under putting the pieces together and learned that once you have downloaded a pattern, you can get it again by signing in, clicking my lby, then downloads! This company is just too cool! Too bad we have nothing but a small selection of Homespun at the local Wal-Mart.

  • Hey. I got a 502 gateway error earlier today when I tried to access this page. Anyone else had the problem?

  • help? I have only done the first row after the chain stitch (sz sm) and I keep coming up with only 34 stitches instead of 47 at the end of the first row.

Zontee says: Hi Dorothy, since the Moderne Jacket Crochet-Along ended in April of last year, we’re no longer providing support for it here on the blog. But never fear — you can e-mail our pattern support team at support@lionbrand.com and someone will get back to you as soon as possible with advice on your question. Hope that helps!
