Our last knit-along of the Cable Luxe Tunic, was a big hit, and we’re ready to start another one! This time we will be working on a very special pattern — the Textured Circle Shrug from the book Glam Knits! We’re so excited to offer you this pattern for FREE, courtesy of North Light Books.
Knit-alongs are a great opportunity for people all over the world to connect on the blog and work together on their own versions of one particular pattern — it’s a chance to learn, make new friends, and expand your knitting abilities by helping each other through the pattern.
Our KAL host will be none other than the shrug’s designer, Stefanie Japel! Stefanie is the author of Glam Knits and Fitted Knits (click the titles to see/purchase the books). She also runs a great blog, Glampyre.com. Please introduce yourself, tell us about your skill-level, and where you’re from!
Stefanie’s first post will be next Thursday, so download the free pattern and collect your supplies! There’s no need to sign up. Just follow along with the blog and chat with us here, on Ravelry, or on Flickr — work at your own pace, share your pictures and thoughts, and have fun. We look forward to knitting along with you!

[…] Lucky me! I get to be the next host of the Lion Brand Notebook […]
Shawn
This looks like fun. Can’t wait to start.
Sophia
I’m looking forward to this? I’ve never participated in a knit-a-long, but this shrug is so cute. My only fear is not having the proper gauge. I’ve usually knitted accessories where gauge doesn’t matter. Until recently when I knitted a shrug and it turned out to be way too small. I thought I checked the gauge properly, but I guess not. So I don’t want to mess this shrug up. Can anyone suggest a good info site for a gauge tutorial?
Zontee says: Hi Sophia, Stefanie will probably go over the gauge for this pattern in a bit more detail in her post on Thursday.
Christina
Gorgeous design! I’m glad to see something so classy AND sexy… I’m looking forward to the challenge
Fiona C
What a gorgeous design. It’s my first KAL too and I’m looking forward to it 🙂
Jill D
Just what I’ve been looking for to wear over a too-revealing summer dress. Can’t wait to get started!!
DeAnn
WooHoo!!! I’m in 🙂
Tonka
I’m really excited about doing this, but I’d love to have some suggestions for different yarn to use. I’m a college student, and really can’t afford to splurge on my yarns.
Zontee says: Hi Tonka, Stefanie’s going to go over some different yarn options on next Thursday, but in the meantime, consider Wool-Ease, Vanna’s Choice, Fishermen’s Wool, or Cotton-Ease for affordable options.
Cheryl
Awesome KAL! Looking forward to it.
cathg
Love the shrug – the 3/4 length sleeves and slightly longer fitted length really do give it a glam feel.
Wendy
…LOVE The Glampyre !!!!
Linda
Love this darling design, and I would like to participate in the knit-along!
Chika
Love the color! The pattern is fabulous, specially the detail on the back and sleeves.
kylie
Oh great I can’t wait, this will be my first knit along and what a great one to start on.
Judy
I had almost given up looking for a pattern like this, especially with the longer sleeves. I’ve never done a KAL before wither, but I’m sure all us newbies will have a BLAST!
Jana
I love the KAL project and I really love the sweater on the left on page 17 of the book. I am afraid that I am not this good at knitting yet, though.
Terri G
Wow, what a lovely shrug! Can’t wait to get my yarn and make it!
Lani
Whine. Every woman in our family has big shoudlers and arms. The most critical measurement, the width of the sleeve, was left off the schematic. I’m afraid this is another KAL I’ll sit out because from looking at the picture, nobody I know will be able to fit in those sleeves, which seem narrower than most.
Celeste
Thanks for the free pattern.
Tricia P
I love the design of the back. I’m going to try it with long sleeves.
Marie
This looks like a challenge, I hope I’m up for it!
deidre
i’m afraid i missed the starting date. i am interested in this KAL, but don’t know if i can participate. the pattern is darling, though, and hopefully i will make the shrug later. have fun!
Colleen
Stephanie’s designs are really awesome. Everyone will love this KAL. Check out her other stuff too.
Marissa Armstrong
This will be my first knit-along. This shrug is so cute it makes me want to try it.
Nyketa
I’m one of those weird people who knit AND crochet! I tend to crochet the most but this shrug certainly makes me want to knit!
ashpags
Great idea for a KAL – this is a super-cute shrug! =)
Stephanie T
What a great KAL choice. I’m really excited to get started!
Phyllis
I’ve never done a knit along but it sounds like a great way to learn and try a project I wouldn’t do on my own!
Sabrina
Nice pattern. I’ve got just the dress to go with it, too!
Caroline
This is such a pretty shrug I can’t resist joining, the first time I ever have joined a KAL. What size should one pick I wonder, just the size to fit bust circumference, with no ease, or a little larger?
Darlene
Have not done this before–love the pattern, and am looking forward to the project and the online community of knitters.
Wanda
It’s a lovely shrug/cardie, i worry about the gauge though, my things always seem to come out smaller than they should!!
G
It is good to see that knitting can be upscale too. Thanks.
Kristine
I love the design! It’s gorgeous!
I wish I could join this KAL, but I’m still very much a beginner knitter. Nevertheless, I’m still gonna follow along and watch everyone else do it. I can’t wait to see finished results! 🙂
Jessica
I’m so excited to make this shrug! Thanks for choosing another great design – I absolutely love the tunic (granted, mine’s not actually done yet…).
Nihal
I am so excited for this KAL!
Virginia
Beautiful design and classic looking shrug. I’m anxious to start knitting!
Julia
Love the design!
Laura
Nice knit! Its cool that you have the designer doing the KAL as well
Candice
This is such a beautiful pattern. I might just have to join this KAL.
Carole
I think that this pattern is beautiful. I have not done a KAL before, but have done a CAL. Recently I have stuck to crochet as it ‘grows’ much quicker, but this pattern makes me want to get my needles out again.
Nekane
Wow, this shrug is very beautiful. ¡¡¡Precioso!!!
Anita C.
I think I might have to get on this – have been admiring Ms. Japel’s work for a while now but have yet to actually try anything.
mnkymama
This will be so much fun!
Lindsay
Ooh, I love this design! I’ve been wanting to make a shrug for a while now, but hadn’t worked up quite the motivation to get past the first few rows on any. Maybe a KAL will motivate me!
Any suggestions for a non-wool yarn, though? Just was checking this before class and don’t have time to check the chosen yarn’s weight/gauge.
Zontee says: Hi Lindsay, LB Collection Organic Wool is a category 4, medium yarn (worsted). Stefanie will go over some yarn options next week, but in the meantime, you could substitute Vanna’s Choice for a cool-weather option or Cotton-Ease for a warm-weather option.
Angelina Glass
I’m new here… and learning to do anything other than Knitting and Purling… 🙂 having a blast.. and taught my 9 year old daughter to knit right along with me…

Cute sweater! Just what I have been looking for. Nice variety of sizes.

I’ve been looking for a shrug to make for my mother, this pattern and KAL will be perfect motivation. Plus I can see her wearing this.
Fern
Awsome.
Love the kal..
great for the cool summer nights
Lori
What a gorgeous shrug! All that texture will make it fun to knit!
Misty
that shrug looks so pretty…I WISH I could knit well enough to make it
Jennifer
Cute! I think I’ll find a different yarn that will work for spring / summer, though.
I’ve never knitted a garment before. Hope I can do it!
Sindy Faddis
I have never done a knit along but am seriously thinking about this one. (Winning the book would be cool too).
KatherineR
Looks like something my sister might like. I’d love to have a copy of the book.
Gail
Love the pattern. I have crocheted a shrug and was very pleased with it (one of my granddaughters is wearing it now) so I am anxious to see if I can knit one. I am trying to improve my knitting skills and I think this will be a great way to do it. Hope I can!!
Krista Pires
I haven’t done a sweater or a knit along before, but I have been eyeing that sweater for a long time, so I think I will try it out. Thanks for offering such a great pattern.
becomewhatyouare
This is just lovely. Exactly the kind of thing I’ve been looking for for my daughters!
joyinga
Oh-this is just what my daughter wants! Hope I can keep up with you knitsters on this, my first KAL. Thanks for the great pattern.
Jessica
beautiful! i can’t wait!
Amy
This will be my first knitalong — I’ve been wanting to do one for a long time, but this is the first one that I thought would both fit my skill level and end up as something I might actually enjoy using. Can’t wait!
Anna Falat/Eagle Rock Winery
I have never done this before, but what a beautiful piece. I can’t wait to start!!!!
Inezknits
I’m not usually a shrug kind of person, but this pattern looks absolutely gorgeous — too good to pass up. As others have commented this will be my first KAL, and I’m looking forward to it.
Victoria
Very Cute Shrug. Would I knit it a size larger if I did not want it to be so fitted? I like things a little loose.
Sharon Madagan
Wow!!!! I am always looking for new ways to invent patterns and use different yarns. The knit-along sounds fantastic, and any pattern that uses cool yarns is always of interest. Just as most knitters, I have many yarns in my stash, but I love using Homespun and the Lion Cotton. In fact, I just finished knitting a sweater using the Lion Cotton and enjoyed every minute. I loved the yarn so much that I returned to the store and bought another color–all of the available skeins/balls in the same dye lot. I have no idea what I am going to knit, but I have the yarns in ONE of my knitting stash baskets where I can see them and think about what to do next.
Pam Chamberlain
This looks like fun. Never done one before but I think I’ll give it a try!
Susan Spiers
I have been looking for a pattern for an exciting shrug. Any advise from the designer would be welcomed as this is my first attempt at one.
Barb
My first KAL, too! Can’t wait to get started. I have two teenage daughters who never have enough shrugs. They’ll be soooooo excited!
Michele
Nice pattern! Glad to see instructions for larger sizes 🙂
Sabrina
How cute! Not to see if it’s actually graded up to my size.
Crossing my fingers.
Marta Dolbear
I’m a first-timer at this KAL thing. Looking forward to it! Great looking pattern.
Margo Lynn
I like this one because in the right yarn and colour I can wear this in the office.
Laura
I loved Fitted Knits so I’m excited to see something from Ms. Japel’s new book. Perfect for my first KAL!
Judith Petruccio
it’ll be my first “circular” attempt. looking forward to it.
Heather
Looks like a fun project. My daughter would love it. I have been knitting since University 25 years ago, so am willing to take almost any challenge.
nancy
Looks like a beautiful project. Can’t wait to start.
Sonya Weiss
Can’t wait. This is my first KAL as well. How fun!
Johanna
This looks like a great pattern! Let’s get going.
Bronwyn
Great choice for a designer for this KAL. LOVE the seamless construction techniques Stefanie uses… always can learn something new! 🙂
pam
I am also new to knit alongs but am trying to get back into knitting so it sounds like fun.
Becky Butler
I love your emails! I can wait to try one of these!
Gloria
This wont look like it came out of your grandmothers closet! Love the color too.
Melissa
This shrug looks classically elegant!
LeeAnne
I think I’ll put down my hook for this one. I’ll have to save up if I want to use the beautiful avocado (or maybe the eggplant?) yarn.
Florence Salotto
I also would like to know how to do the gauge
the right way. This is my first knit along.
I am about in the middle for knitting ,not bad
but not great.
Zontee says: Hi Florence, click here for an explanation of making a gauge swatch.
Edith
This pattern looks like fun and will likely knit up quickly. Can’t wait to start!
Bonnie
I like this pattern. I look forward to starting the project
Dyhana
Yay! A KAL I can get excited about! I love that retro style, it totally works with my figure. CAn’t wait to get started. I’m a novice to medium knitter from Ft. Lauderdale looking for projects to practice new skills. Thaks to Stephanie and thenks to Lion Brand!
Nancy Coutu
What engaging pictures! I am getting ready to graduate from one-size-fits-all scarves and felted purses to a shrug or (do I dare?) a sweater!! This book could do that for me.
Sue Day
I have the time and I am looking forward to participating online in a group session which I have done before. The pattern is awesome.
Julie
This will be my first KAL, and I am so excited! What a beautiful choice…I just can’t resist! I am currently working on my first sweater: the Pretzel Cable Cardi from Vogue Knitting Fall 2008. Which will I finish first? I can’t wait to get started!
Rebecca Jones
Love the look of the shrug
Roberta
I love one piece garments, and this one looks like a winner! I can’t wait to get started!
Loretta Jensen
I think this will be a great present for my teenage granddaughter.
Jacquelyn Till
This looks like a great project. Doing it with others is new to me.
Vahishta
I did the last KAL and the CAL and they both turned out to be a lot of fun. I think I will give this one a try too. Have to find the right yarn though.
Jessica Le
Wow! I can’t wait to get started! I love Ms. Japel’s designs.
Breanna S
Perfect choice for a KAL. I look forward to working on it together.
Mary Alyce
Great timing! I have been thinking of a shrug for the cool summer evenings. This will be the very thing. Hoping to have fun.
michelleher
This is too beautiful to let pass by…
Elizabeth
Thanks for the free pattern!
Beth K
I’m hoping some of the questions about yarn will be answered before the KAL starts. I think my daughter would love this shrug, but she’s severely allergic to wool. I’d really appreciate the designer or someone at Lion Brand to suggest a cotton or wool-free blend for a substitution.
For those of you asking about checking gauge: here’s how I learned in a terrific knitting class I took:
Using the needle in the pattern (in this case a size 8), cast on the number of stitches in the gauge sample instructions, plus 6. In this case that would be 18 6=24. Knit the number of rows in the instructions (26) using the pattern. So, my sample will look like this:
Cast on 26 sts using size 8 needle
Rows 1-5: Reverse Stockinette
Rows 6-13: Stockinette
Rows 14-18: Reverse Stockinette
Rows 19-26: Stockinette
Slide the sample off the needle – lay it flat and measure from 3 stitches in on each side. This will exclude your “curly” edges from the measuring and increase the accuracy. If the sample is too small – go up a needle size, and be sure to make a new gauge sample to confirm the change. If your sample was too large, go down a size.
Hope this helps!
Zontee says: Hi Beth K, Stefanie will go over some more yarn options next week, but in the meantime, here are some non-wool options: You could substitute Vanna’s Choice for a cool-weather option or Cotton-Ease for a warm-weather option. Hope that helps. Enjoy!
Peggy
This will be my first KAL. I love the pattern and decided that this would be the time to start. I just downloaded the pattern, ordered the yarn and, actually, ordered her book because it looks so interesting. I can’t wait to get started.
Katy
Gorgeous shrug!
Debbie
This a great look – going to the store today
to buy supplies.Perfect for summer
Melissa
I am so excited to see this KAL. I have been needing a kick to try Stephanie Japel’s patterns – I always admire them from afar! 🙂
Brandi
Great KAL choice! Stephanie Japel has wonderful designs–she’s one of my favorite bloggers, too!
Beth K
Thank you, Zontee, for the quick response! Now I can’t decide whether to go ahead and get one you suggested, or wait until after Stephanie’s first blog to collect my yarn – such decisions!
elsa
Beautiful shrug!!! can hardly wait to get started, count me in!!!
Gwen
I’m so excited about this KAL! My sister gave me the Glamknits book for Christmas and the first project I chose to do is this one! I’ve barely gotten started, so this is PERFECT timing!
Sheena
Looks gorgeous, and sounds fun!
Wendy
These KALs are so helpful for a somewhat intermediate knitter!!!!
Michelle at Scribbit
Count me in–I’d love a copy of that book and am loving your newsletter.
Sandra
What a great idea! I look forward to following along with Stephanie!
Logan
Ooo! Amazing patterns. I want to win!
Megan
I have to say, this is the first shrug I really love.
Kristen
I have wanted to join the knit-a-long for a while. I am excited about this. What is the skill level? Thanks
Zontee says: Hi Kristen, if you click the link to the pattern, you’ll see that it’s designated an intermediate level project.
Kelli
I absolutely ADORE Stefanie Japel’s designs and bought her book Fitted Knits as soon as it came out. Her designs are elegant, drape well, and are written very clearly. I’m so excited that she’s participating in a KAL, especially on this shrug!
I have wide shoulders and a larger bust, and most shrugs make me look like a linebacker because they’re so bulky. This is lean and elegant, and the shaping should prevent Pro-Football Syndrome! Thanks Stefanie for sharing this with us!
kelle
This is very pretty! I’d love to win the book 😀
Mary Greenfield
Fantastic pattern, fantastic book!
Sandra In The Zone
The Textured Circle Shrug is just splendiferous!
My interest in dogie sweaters has just been replaced with this “must have” shrug! Thank you for the existence of knit-alongs to improve my own ever reaching horizons!Lion Brand Yarn simply rocks!
Sally
this is the best pattern yet on lionbrand…especially for people like me living on a warm island. People often think we do not need sweaters here in Bermuda but a small shrug like this is perfect. Thank you so much
Connie
I really enjoy Stefanie’s designs and look forward to making this also!
Alice Halbeisen
I always enjoy Stephanie’s designs. Northlights Publishing has done an amazing job with layouts and photography.
Kathleen
I look forward to learning how to knit this great shrug. I know once I knit it, both my daughters will want one!!
Barb Nelson
As a near “senior” I don’t like to show my arms so a shrug is perfect for me. Can’t wait to start.
Sarah McD.
I’m really looking forward to this project. I love shrugs (and shawls and wraps and capes and the like) and my 8-year-old does too. I’m considering making a small version of this for her. Yay!
Elenir
I’d simply adore to win this book and I’m preparing everything to start knitting up this cute and very “chic”shrug !
Thanks for the pattern ,
Elenir
evie kol
Looks like a good pattern and not too complicated.
Carol
I’ve never participated in a KAL before, but am considering this one! Looks like fun!
Karin
Lovely pattern. Will be a great way to learn a new technique.
Allyson
I’m still a new knitter, so I’m not sure if I’ll be able to follow along with this one, but it sure is cute. Probally I’ll keep up with the blog to learn from all you brave knitters. I’ll definately be crocheting a shrug though!
Kristi
Beautiful! Love the color!
Gina in SF Bay Area
I love KALs. I really enjoyed the Cabled Tunic KAL. It gave me the inspiration/push I needed to finally complete this project that had languished in by “to do someday” list for way too long. I have also learned lace knitting through various KALs. Although KALs don’t replace our LYS, they are a great way to get nearly immediate feedback on both general and problems unique to a particular pattern. Happy knitting!!!
Mary-Jane
I’m accumulating quite a collection of patterns I’d like to try… I haven’t knitted for about 25 yrs, and am concerned my early-arthritic knuckles won’t make it as far as they’ll need to go so I still haven’t tried one… Maybe this will be the one? Guess I should Just Do It, or at least try and see what my hands can still handle. Wish me luck!
Heather Hernandez
The detail on the back is beautiful!
Emily
So glad shrug patterns are becoming more prevalent! Been looking forever for a shrug pattern for my next project…
Jan
This is a fabulous shrug. Very sophisiticated. I’ve never participated in a KAL. This may be my first.
Stephanie
This is so pretty! I will do me best to get yarn in time to start time! so cute!!
Michelle
I’ve already knit this! lol…It’s a bit ironic in my eyes. I used Lion Brand Fisherman’s Wool, so it’s a little scratchy, but very cozy. I find it’s just right for a cold-blooded person in Louisiana…XD
D Corby
Wow, what a great project. My friend just finished one and it looks awesome. Can’t wait to make it. And thanks to the designer for making in an a wide range of sizes.
Samantha
Looking forward to trying this. It will be my first KAL. I will have to experiment with yarn choices, though, since I am alergic to wool!
Nicki
I love Lion Brand Yarn! The quality is amazing with the new blends and coveted fibers and you can’t beat the price! I am looking forward to this KAL!
Amanda Marinelli
I’ve never participated in something like this before. It looks like fun! I hope I can keep up.
A. McC-
Excellent. Japel is my favorite designer right now.
Merianne
I haven’t done a KAL before, but I think I might do this one! The pattern is really cute and I think I’ve got enough worsted weight yarn in my stash that I won’t even have to shop. Just got to finish up the shawl I’ve got started!
Claudette Soucy
I love KAL’s!!!!!!!
Thank you so much for offering this to us.
Can’t wait to get started. :>)
Lisa
this will be my first KAL, I’m a little scared of the intermediate level but am going to try…
Subwayhooker
This is so beautiful – Stephanie does incredible work!
Sandra
I am really looking forward to knitting this exciting new pattern. Thank you so much for all you do.
Meredith
I love this pattern! Can’t wait to get started!
bj mathes
A search by Ravelers for a pattern that would resemble the shrug worn by the ‘mom’ on an Ikea commercial put the idea in my head and now it all seems to be solved. With Stephanie Japel’s Textured Circle Shrug pattern and Lion Brand’s Cotton Ease, it will be just the right style and weight for wearing while walking along the beach in the evening. The perfect gift for my dearest friend who lives in one of the few homes left on Bolivar Penisula after Hurricane Ike. Thank you for the opportunity and inspirations.
Diane Ellison
What a fabulous pattern! Thanks for sharing and organizing a KAL :))
Pamela
I love this shrug! Will definitely be making this one!
hallie m.
This pattern looks awesome, and it’s plus-sized, too! Can’t wait to get started.
BeckyS
Great choice. I’ve wanted to try this one out for quite some time. Can’t wait to cast on! 🙂
Lianne
I just recently did the CAL and love this pattern. I am more experienced at crochet, but this is inspiring me to try knitting again after a long layoff!! I love this shrug and the back is just lovely!
Linda K
WOW…what a lovely knitted shrug.
Finally, a shrug that I really want to knit & wear!
Rita
I love the design. Can’t wait to get started.
Deanna B.
this book looks really awesome, and the knit along looks like fun. i can’t wait to get started
Roberta
Lion Brand is the greatest – and this shrug looks fantastic. Thank you for choosing a project that includes those of us who are not of the “average size” description. I am looking forward to making this and wearing it. 🙂
Debbie C.
Hello,
I’m a fairly new knitter and absolutely love anything inspired by the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. I
have an extremely busy schedule but look foward to my first KAL. I’m challenged with patterns because of weight gain from a bad back. I’m so pleased to see something vintage for us “big girls”. Can’t wait to get started. The book looks very insightful. Hoping to purchase soon.! Happy knitting everyone.
Miri
What a nice pattern… looks almost like a jacket. I still haven’t done my cabled knit tunic either, but I printed out all the blogs, which I think is a real help. Lots of tips & tricks on these KALs, I always learn something. Hopefully one of these days, I will actually finish all my projects! 🙂
Marian
Can’t wait to follow along with this – very classy styling!
Thea
I love vintage and vintage-style patterns! This looks like a great one.
Jo
This Circle Shrug looks wonderful – I am starting my first knit-along with this!
Biki
Hi All! This looks amazing! I can’t wait to get started 🙂
Marian: I totally understand! I have all these projects that are in stages and only a small handful complete (the easy stuff only 🙁 ) hahaa, let’s motivate each other!
Bonnie
I love the shrug and can’t wait for the KAL
michelle
love this!
Laura Baker
Can’t wait to see all the patterns. I love this cardigan. I am on a cardigan kick right now so I will have to join the KAL. Hope I win the book.
Thanks.
Jeanie
What a beautiful pattern! Yay, can’t wait to see how the KAL progresses. 🙂
Trish Austad
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for: a glamorous season-spanning shrug that suits all shapes and ages, not just bean-pole teenagers. Gorgeous!
Lynn
Glad to see that you’ve chosen a pattern that comes in a small size!
Kim
Beautiful shrug, can’t wait to get started!
Kristen
Wow, this is a beautiful shrug! I think I have the perfect yarn for it… hopefully I have enough!
If not, well, there’s no harm in buying something else to use with this pattern…. 🙂
Ann
It looks like a beautiful shrug. I really would like to try to make it.
Justine
I had to miss the last one as I was working on gifts, but now my time is free and this one’s gonna be just for me! Thanks for choosing such a nice pattern to share, it will keep me warm and stylish at work.
Marina Glagolev
Love these knit-alongs – gives me the courage to try something new – I learn so many skills & they have really given me the confidence to step up to more complicated patterns. Thanks! Marina
Courtenay
This is my favorite pattern from Glam Knits! It’s been in my queue for a while now!
Pam
I looked over the ravelry photos of what people have done with this pattern, and was impressed. Thanks, Stefanie and Lion Brand!
Katia Colavito
This is very exciting. I just finished a long sleeve shrug that was a trial for me but I have great joy at completing it. I have never participated in a Knit along but look forward to it. I am a fairly new knitter just started in November. I love it…. I have knitted scarves and crocheted necklaces which are sold at my sisters boutique in Tucson. I have never blogged so here we go….
Candice
What a beautiful shrug. I hope to make it!
Erin
I love it! Its something I would wear and it looks fun to knit too
Tammy
This looks lovely and sexy! I am going to give it a try because I always need “a little something” for the summer when it is hot outside and cool inside. Now what color should I choose???????
ALH1964
Awesome shrug pattern! I have been looking for a pattern that is stylish and not too bulky. This one is perfect!!!
Maria Claudia
Hi! I´m from Barranquilla, Colombia and I´m so excited about this project, sometimes i can´t get exactly your yarns, because in my country there is not a Lion Brand store, so i get them from the internet but take some time to get home… or addapt our colombian yarns to your projects. Hopefully i can buy something similar. I really would like to try tomake it because it´s so beautiful.
Zontee says: Hi Maria Claudia, actually Lion Brand IS carried by a few distributors in Colombia. Please e-mail international_sales@lionbrand.com to find out where you can buy our yarns in your country.
Nightlady
I love this!! It’s so classic. I’m a beginner knitter and this would be one I would look forward to making!
Jamie
I can’t wait to get started!
Sarah Ryan
I’m a Canadian, living in Oxford, who loves to knit. I love the idea of a knit along – and I’ve admired Stefanie Japel’s patterns for a while. I was out and about the other day recognized a stranger walking by me in Japel original. A fabulous moment. Happy knitting!
Judy Moseman
Thank you Stephanie Japel!
Miriam
Looks like fun. I love top-down.
StephanieRBM
Have loved “Fitted Knits:” can’t wiat for this to get started!
Jena
That is a really cute shrug. I am into shrugs right now (I am also trying to learn to knit). Great timing for this knit-along.
Debra
Wow, this book looks beautiful! Some really different and gorgeous designs. Can’t wait to see the whole thing. I’ve never been in a KAL, but you guys have convinced me!
Carol
Oooh, I’m so glad I get to knit something from her new book. I have her first book and have knitted a few sweaters from there. Love the look, love her method. Stephanie Japel rocks!
Sandra
Love Stefanie’s designs! I’m from Vancouver, Canada and I guess I’m an intermediate knitter because I always have things to improve on and I’m never afraid to try something new!
irishwings
I’ve never been involved in a knit-a-long before.A new experience I’m looking forward to!!! Love the shrug.Great patterns that give knitting a,”ZEST.”
Jessalyn
I completed the crochet-along last month. I am looking forward for this knit-along project – Textured Circle Shrug!
Amanda
I really like the look of this shrug! Like Lani, I’m a bit concerned about whether the arms/shoulders will be too tight, and how to remedy that.
Ann B
Yeah! This is a neat pattern, and I may knit more than one. It looks like it’d be great to have as an office sweater…
Joyce
I love these Knit-a-long and crochet-a-longs. I did the CAL but did not finish yet, but almost there. I am going to share this site with a group of ladies called the Knotty Girls who meet every Monday night and knit. It is the best night of the week. I think some of them may just want to participate in this KAL. Love the choice of patterns. Printed off my pattern and going to the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival tomorrow and hope to find wool to make this pattern. Knit On I always say!
Lia
I can’t wait to start. I have been meaning to knit a shrug for a while, this will be the perfect excuse!
Melissa
Looking forward to this one. I loved the projects from Fitted Knits.
Donna
I’m looking forward to trying a new thing – have been following previous KAL’s but this will be a first for participation for me! Let’s go! Donna
Amanda G.
I’m living in a town in southern Middle Tennessee, and I’m not a very experienced knitter. I’ve been knitting scarves for several years in increasingly complicated stitches, but have only recently branched out into something with a shape. I took one look at this shrug and thought, that would be PERFECT for my daughter who recently complained to me about getting cold in a strappy dress that she wore to a wedding. I’m going to give it a try!
Alesia
How fun is that! I love the look of this shrug. I can’t wait to try it on for size – and to wear it too! I have never tried a big project before and I am hoping the kal can help me. Thanks for doing this!
ennadoolf
What a pretty shrug! I’ve just learned socks, so maybe a shrug should be my next project!
Audrey
I love this shrug pattern! What yarn could I substitute if I am allergic to wool? Wool makes my skin itch and I develope hives. Love to make this in wool, if I could!
Michelle M
This is fabulous! Someone posted that it would be a great office sweater….I agree!! I may have to do a couple of these in different colors. Thank you!!
Ina
What a great choice! I got a late start on the last KAL, so this time I am really ready to start with everyone and really knit along.
Cherann
I’m especially pleased that the pattern comes in extended sizes. Too often, fitted pieces seem to be limited to the tiny, and as a larger person, I like structured items too.
Like many in this conversation, I’ve never done the KAL, so it will be an interesting experience to give it a whirl.
This will help me “step away” from the sock making addiction I currently have…
W.L. Sakowski
What a cute shrug… and my first KAL. Now, to just *finish* it! (especially with all the baby blankets that are waiting…)
Carol
What a great pattern – thanks to the publishers for making it available for free!
Marlys
Perfect, I was looking for a new project!!
Helle Majlund
What a wonderful idea. I’m a great fan of Stephanie Japels designs, and the fact, that you can knit top-down. Great choise. Thanks for a great pattern 🙂
Hope Meltser
I’m so excited about doing my first knit-along. The shrug is so cute and I think it will give me a welcome challenge!Plus, its free! How much better can you get!? Thanks Stefanie and Lion Brand!
Sandi
how fun is this shrug….givemmme my needles
babe…Im ready to knit ..
Faded Lily
Looks like a really great pattern! I’ve got it downloaded and printed, now just need to decide what yarn in my stash will work best for this! I’m in the middle of two projects, one for a baby and one for my 9 tear old niece. I’ve been looking for a new adult pattern to make, so this is perfect! See you all at the KAL!
Melanie
I’ve been watching the KAL groups from the sidelines, but I love this shrug and I can’t wait to join in this time!
Janice
I love Stefanie’s designs–great choice!
Andrea
Stefanie’s patterns are gorgeous – wonderful choice! We can’t get Lion Brand in New Zealand, so I’ll be watching out for Stefanie’s suggestions on substitutes. As we’re heading into winter this will be a great project to make while looking forward to spring!
Bonnie
Hey this is such a cool pattern, it will be the 2nd shrug I knit. =) I’m so glad the pattern is free.
Cheryle
This looks great! Youthful and stylish. I’m in.
B.Smith
Wow! What a beautiful design! It feels retro to the 1940’s when women’s clothes were distinctive and glamourous!
Judy
I’ve been looking for an unusual shrug that can go casual or dressy — this seems to fit the bill. It will be my first knit-along; hope I can keep up (I already have a lot of projects going!).
Valerie
Oh I love her patterns! Can’t wait! I guess I better finish up the fitted knits wrap sweater so I can start on this!
knitz ditz
This is a lovely shrug – just what I was looking for – longer sleeves and focus on the waist, not on the rib cage!
As for an alternative yarn to consider for this project, I am currently using cotton-ease for a baby sweater and it is a great yarn to handle with nice stitch definition.
ujala
I just love the pattern, just getting started!
Angelica
Can’t wait to do this. It looks so sophisticated. This mother of 2 needs it!
Andrea
Hi…such a lovely shrug!!! When you think of glamour knitting together; metallics pastels come to mind first…not me @ all!!! So nice to see these rich colors in well fitting shapes. I just printed off the pattern look forward to trying a pattern from this designer, for the first time. I will probably “tweak” the sleeves to full length though. Thanks for the opportunity w/ the free pattern.
Marge
I may have to dig out my knitting needles and do this KAL. I love the shrug and have plenty of yarn left over from the Moderne Jacket (Crochet CAL)to do this shrug.
Jacqui Davidson
Well I must have a go at the textured circle shrug it’s beautiful…and it was my birthday yesterday so I think the yarn will count as my present!! Oh and it’s green which is my favourite colour!
I hope I can get a substitute yarn to match???
Michelle
I’m really excited to start this project! It will be perfect to wear to work and a night out on the town!
Lucy Ann Wines
How lucky am I! I was looking for an item to knit to enter in the Woman’s Club Arts and Crafts Contest that would catch the judge’s eye and having no luck at all. Taking a few minutes break to read my e-mail I was rewarded with this pattern and a knit along.
Thanks so much!!!!
Helen
I love shrugs and this one is beautiful. Can’t wait to get started on it. Thanks so much for great patterns!!! :<)
Dorsey Clement
Woo Hoo a knit along that I really want to do. Great choice–this looks like it’s going to be a ball.
Lynnita
Love the pattern. I’m not great at knitting, but want to try anyway! maybe with a KAL, I’ll get it finished.
Sue
Love Stephanie’s designs! I was just looking at this pattern today in the book from my library, & thinking about what yarn I have to use. Great choice!
Trish
Hi, was following up on this on Ravelry, some have said there are some mistakes in the pattern and Stephanie said she would work it out when it comes up, shouldn’t we be aware of it first, or just follow along till we get there?
Thanks, just don’t want us all to be frustrated at some point. I know the pattern says “no corrections” and it looks like a great project, so should I just ignore what I saw on Ravlery?
Zontee says: Hi Trish, sometimes people point out problems with patterns that are not actually mistakes, but explanations of specific skills or techniques that they did not understand. Since Stefanie is the designer, it is probably best to work along with her and if the group spots any issues, she can address them as we progress in this knit-along.
Tatiana
Wow! I’ve gotten to the age where I always feel a bit cold when everybody else is fine, and this looks comfy AND gorgeous!
First KAL I’ve joined and can’t wait to start. (Sorry I’m late. 🙂 )
Judi
I have the perfect friend for this shrug. Makes it more fun to knit when it’s for a special person. 🙂
denise
looks very classy.may be fun to try.
Karen
Love the shrug. Now I definitely have to check out Stefanie Japel’s books – Glam Knits and Fitted Knits. Oh and I can’t forget about her blog.
Kay
I don’t ususally like shrugs, but this one is very appealing. It may be my next project as soon as I deal with the loose ends to my last afghan! Thanks for the free pattern. I’m looking forward to following the KAL progress and noting where to pay special attention when I finally knit this myself.
Naomi
Looks like a great garment, especially in the shade of green shown.
Gaia
Awesome! Ms. Japel is my favorite designer. I can’t wait to get started.
JulieM
Wonderful KAL. THis will be fun. One of my favorite designers and a great blogger, too!
Donna B.
Yay! I want Glam Knits in a big way — looooove Fitted Knits. Pick me!
Natalie N
I knitted a couple of sweaters from the Fitted Knits, my favorite knitting book. Will have to knit this circle shrug, it’s so darling!
Ashley M
I love the shrug! This may be made several times!! Too cute. 🙂 I am very excited!
BellaMama
A chance to win THIS BOOK!! Would need the book to knit along, we’ll see! Early congrats to the winner!
Zontee says: Hi BellaMama, you don’t need the entire book to knit along with us. The pattern is available at LionBrand.com (search for “Textured Circle Shrug”) for free. Just click on the title of the book in the article above to go to it.
Jan
My first KAL. I’m SO excited!!
dottedl
Talk about perfect timing! Just returned from a trip with a bag full of summer dresses and of course new yarn to knit shrugs to match (I know I should use my stash oops). Literally just logged on to search for patterns when this popped up! Love the extra length of this pattern. A small shrug is not warm enough for Irish summers and cardigans cover too much of the dresses – this should be just right 🙂 I may even get away with wearing it to the office instead of a suit jacket – bliss.
I’ve seen loads of Stefanie’s patterns on ravelry and can’t wait to try one out. So jumping in to my first KAL after 20yrs of knitting. My mom will be delighted that I’ll have other people to bug with questions.
Vickie D.
I have always made a very simple shrug that is an old Nova Scotia traditional heritage pattern. My Grandmother used to call it a “Hug-Me-Tight”. Probably because you could wrap a baby up in your arms and the shrug would “hug” the baby too. Great accessory for the rocking chair. It is now time to progress and this is just the pattern! Can’t wait.
allison
This looks like a great book with beautiful patterns. I look forward to the knit along!
Wendy C.
Love the pattern! I have been putting off knitting myself a sweater for far too long — looks like this KAL will finally get me going. Can’t wait to start! Thanks Lyon Brand Yarn Company.
Seirretta
Wow! Beautiful shrug. I am new at knitting and just teaching myself to knit. It is going to be a challenge but all good things in life come with a challenge. Hope I know all the stitches. Stefanie does some amazing knitting in Glam Knits.
Josephine
Knitting is fun. I recalled when we were in class back in 80’s only a few of us in class know how to knit-after we motivated and inspired-on graduation day, all of us (29) knew how to knit and with finished works!
Stephanie
Wow! what a lovely shrug, very flattering style. I’m looking forward to knitting this project!
TRACIE J-B
WAAAAAAAAAAY TOO CUTE! NOT YOUR GRANNY’S KAL THIS TIME!
Judi A
I’ve followed previous KALs but without actually making anything. This shrug is just what I need in the slightly-too-cool-for-me office where I work, so I’m going to do this one. It’s been a long time since I made something for me. This will be fun!
Suzan
Thanks for remembering us zaftig types!
Cindy
So glad to see more flattering sweater sizes, instead of the old boxy ones!
Charlotte
This is my first KAL. Like so many others, I’m excited to join!
Beth
I love this pattern. Wool is a bit itchy for me, so I’ll probably use Cotton-Ease. Must make sure it yields the same gauge.
Tammy
I’ve been looking to buy a shrug like this for years…my needles are ready!
Muriel J Moore
I’ve never done a KAL, but I think I will try this one. I’ve been knitting baby sweaters to use up stash yarn and am ready for a new challenge. I understand about the gauge thingy. When I do a swatch I always seem to knit tighter than normal, so I’ve started using two different size needles. If pattern calls for gauge with #8, I’ll use an 8 and 9 to get gauge on the project. So far it’s worked, so you might try it?
dee
Glam is not your grandma’s knitting! Wow!
Dianna
This looks like it would be perfect for the office. I have never knitted a KAL before, but I will like trying this one.
Sue at Tulalip
I have been wanting to make a shrug so this gives me the chance to do it on this KAL. Good luck everyone!!
Deloris
This is a beautiful shrug! I can’t wait to start!
Lisa
Can you let us know what skill level this is–I’m a beginner so I’m not experienced with making something this complicated–can I do it?
Zontee says: Hi Lisa, if you click through to the pattern, you will see that it is an intermediate pattern. Review the stitches used in the pattern (don’t forget the ones in the abbreviation guide at the bottom) to determine if these are skills that you can handle.
April
I am so excited to knit this great shrug. I have never joined a KAL and this just seems the perfect time to. Besides look at all the great company and support to keep going. I just love Stefanie Japel’s designs. Bad Penny is my favorite.
Barbara Mills
Hi, I’m a knitterholic from rural Victoria, (bushfires!)Australia. We are comming into winter after avery long, hot dry summer. I can’t wait to get my hands, needles and wool busy on this wonderful looking garment. Daughter and daughter in law are fighting over who gets the first one! (it will be me, but don’t tell them that! Keep theses KAL’s going. LOVE your newsletters, patterns etc. biggest problem is substituting Aussie yarns. Cheers. Barbara
Zontee says: Hi Barbara, also remember that if you’d like to use Lion Brand yarns, you can go to the Knitting Loft website, our distributor in Australia.
lilaclinny
fab kal love the shrug love Stephanie’s work great choice!!
Kimberly A
I loooove the look of this sweater, and love the green too! I so excited Lion Brand has gotten Stephanie of board for this KAL. Good job!
Emma
What a great sweater. I have Stefanie’s first book, and really want to pick this book up as well. Now I have some incentive…
laura
looks very interesting…i might have to get organized and knit!!!
Cynthia
Love the shrug as well. I have not finished my CAL since I am making many modifications in the length and sleeves. However, I love to have many projects going on at the same time. I am finishing up my knitted market tote and am ready for the next knitting project. I believe my daughter will love this in the Cotton Ease or Vanna’s Choice. Looking forward to the next blog.
Deb Cameron
Love, love, love Stefanie Japel…she is the bomb! This pattern is gorgeous, so figure flattering, can’t wait to get started, am making mine if RED! Thank you Lion Brand!
Luise
This a a first for me in all respects. At the age of 87, I can use the challenge and this looks like a great place to start. Luise
Donna Williamson
Love it!! Can’t wait to get started. I really enjoyed the cable luxe tunic and it fits like a dream. I’m hoping to have the same experience or better with this project. Thanks for the KALS!
Nitya Viswanath
The KAL shrug project looks beautiful, but I’m a beginner and it seems a little overwhelming. Is there a KAL project offered for beginners? I can do scarves, and I just started socks (so far, so good!).
Zontee says: Hi Nitya, no, we are not currently hosting any beginner KALs. We really encourage people to participate KALS in order to expand their skills and experience levels, which is why we usually select slightly more advanced patterns. You should definitely check out yarn community websites such as Ravelry.com though, where there are many KALs going on at once, at many different skill levels.
Karen
Fun project – would like to make it in the teal (or maybe a lighter color and alter it to make the sleeves a bit shorter!)
Eileen
I am looking forward to this. I had made a shrug for my 16 year old niece and had problems with picking up the stitches to do the ribbing. I am looking forward to learning more and doing better. I started a prayer shawl ministry goup and we all trade patterns and years and stories. We love how the homespun works up into the prayer shawls and its is sooooo soft. Thank you. I enjoy the emails and all your suggestions. Eileen
Donna
What a great pattern, this is my first KAl. Thank you Lion Brand
Carmen
How absolutely beautiful!!!! Just learning to knit (and finally purl too), but as a left hander am just learning to “switch” things in how I approach a pattern since I use knit european (continental?) style. Printed the pattern out and will ask for some advice before I start. Thank you!
linda-kay
I’ve been a Glampyre fan for some time and I’m finally branching out and trying more complex patterns. Thanks for the opportunity.
Lori
Love the pattern and the yarn choice for this Kal. I have a question. In the first row PM, which I assume refers to an increase for the raglan…does this refer to M1P or PFB? Thanks.
Donna
I just completed my first shrug and now am totally in love w/them, so I’m looking forward to creating this one, it is so gorgeous.
TK Clark
I’d like to make this shrug for myself but I have a full figure and usually prefer tops that go to my waist or hips. Can this pattern be adapted to do that?
Jamie
I love that Stefanie has brought some glamour to knitting arts. These arent your Grammma’s patterns! These are sexy, classic and simply stunning!
Connie
I am not sure my knitting skill are up to this, but I will try it out next week when my mom is in the hospital.
Connie
Trish
What a beautiful design! Wish I could figure out HOW to knit!!! I crochet, but my knitting ends up tangled and wonky….I’m working on it though!
Mary Thomas
Loved the first KAL tunic, and I’m looking forward to knitting this lovely shrug; it’s even shown in my favorite color! I’m a long time knitter, fairly experiences, and like to read the KAL commentary.
Ann
Lovely shrug. Looks like a fun challenge!
Deni Schwiebert
I luv shrugs, and this looks like a really special one to add to my collection.
Irene
This is my first KAL. I have been knitting for at least 60 years, never made a shrug.
I’ll use Vanna’s choice because I’m allergic to wool.
Melody
I told myself that I wouldn’t start anything!!!! Until I got some of the things I have on the go finished. HOWEVER, I can’t resist and the last Knit along I finished – it is great to know others are working on the same pattern at the same time and keeps me going till the end.
Still knitting in Canada.
andrea kushner
this would be great for my 86 year old grandmother
she loves to knit
Elizabeth
This is such a cute pattern… can’t wait to get started. Thanks for a super choice!
Patricia
I’m a first time KAL but am an intermediate knitter and am always looking for more fitted, stylish patterns. This looks perfect. Thanks LBY for making this possible.
Arlene Cherry
Very cute design, I bet the book has some really great projects.
Christine
I love Stefanie Japel design books and her patterns are fabulous…but I enjoy MOST is that LB newsletters always enclosed with free pattern(s) each month which lighten up our days of dissappointment…THANKS
Ellen Coale
I’m looking forward to this knitalong. I’ve wanted to join one for a long time. Now I will get the chance, because I will be having surgery and laid up for six weeks.
Best of all is I love shrugs.
Erika
I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of a knit-along, and this design definitely sealed the deal for me. It’s to gorgeous to not participate!
Wendy
Looks gorgeous! Can’t wait to follow along.
Gita
BEE-YOO-TEE-FOOL piece! Wish it were crocheted, ’cause that’s my forte, but I think it’s time to finally learn how to knit. I’m gonna hang on to the pattern, as it’s probably a wee bit too ambitious for a novice, dontcha think? 🙂
Thanks for doing this! (Man, it is soooo gorgeous…)
Rosetta
Thanks for another great pattern!
Mary
This looks really cute! I just hope I have the patience to get all the way through with it.
Valerie
A KAL that includes size 3X. Thank you!
Laurie
Well, I still haven’t cast on from the last KAL (I did get the yarn and worked a swatch though), but this would be so much more useful here where it’s warm or hot most of the year. If I only had some idea what color I wanted/needed. (A reasonable person would just use the Vanna’s Choice she already has from the cabled pullover, which lets you know how reasonable I am.)
For all the beginners contemplating this, this is a great chance to expand and learn with dozens of people to help you here. I’d imagine along with pictures here, you can probably find a bunch on Ravelry. Go for it!
donnagrafblow
looks like fun. I’ll prob choose a cotton yarn
Heidi
Can’t wait to see what everyone does with this! The book looks beautiful!
Susi
Gorgeous!!!! – Will definitely be following this one!
Mary Jane
What a great choice, this will be my first attempt at a garment with sleeves!
Rebecca Seals
I am still a beginner when it comes to knitting sweaters but I am going to do my first knit-along. I tried one on my own and it was a little too hard for me at the time so I am excited about doing this shrug with other knitters. I am a little unsure about which yarn to choose and may need some help. Does the knit along start May 7th?
Linda M.
The textured Circle shrug looks beautiful. I’m so glad the pattern has larger sizes too. So many of the shrug patterns are warn so tight and wouldn’t look good on a heavier person. I’m sure I’ll make this one.
Linda M.
Robyn
I’m probably a beginning intermediate. I can’t wait to knit this shrug with everyone’s help of course. I made the jacket with the CAL group and loved it. This will be my first project with KAL.
Ellen R. Perry
Hey, let me get to the store…I want to knit this…
ellen
Michelle
Cute shrug! Stefanie has such great patterns. Can’t wait to get started.
Phyllis
I think I would make this in Vanna’s Choice, as I like the color choices better.
Sakia
Love it! Seriously consideing moving the gorgeous textured shrug onto my Knit List…
Zilicia
I ran out of steam before I even got really started on the last knit along! I have no major WIP’s right now, so I am READY to go!
falkonfly
Yummo! This is a cute shrug and will be my second KAL… am still working on the first one (Cable Luxe) as life kept intervening and I’ve had to start again… but I WILL finish it 😀
At least this project will be a little smaller :D)
MelodyJ
I love Stefanie’s sense of style. This is going to be a fun KAL. The pattern will work for different body types.
Vicki D
I am working on my gauge swatch for the shrug. What is reverse stockinette stitch? Do you just start with a purl row instead of a knit row as in stockinette stitch or is it more complicated? What cast on method would be best for this pattern? Thanks for your help.
Vicki
Zontee says: Hi Vicki, reverse stockinette is the same as stockinette except the purl side is the “right side” that faces out. You can find more detailed explanations of all of the abbreviations on a pattern simply by clicking on that abbreviation in orange at the bottom of the pattern. Personally, I like a cable cast-on for garments as it is stretchier, but you may want to wait until Stefanie’s post on Thursday to see if she has any recommendations on it.
Janey
I really want to join in – provided work allows me. Because I really want to know where the “Circle” is in this Textured Circle Shrug.
Janey
Judy Levine
WaHoo! I’ve been looking for a fitted, sassy sweater. Count me in for my 1st KAL!
Irene
Great choice. Can’t wait to get started.
KnitWhit
I’m a huge fan of Stephanie’s designs. I’m in!
Cindy
Great back on the snug. I can’t wait to get started.
Yvette
I am so excited to start this project. It’s fun and funky and will be one of those pieces where people will stop you on the street and go ‘GREAT SHRUG’!!
Joyce
I am in my 70th year but I refuse to acknowledge the fact and therefore “little old lady” patterns are not for me. This one is just the thing for that wearing over a sleeveless top, especially in restaurants and stores with overly agressive A/C. I am more adept at crochet, the last CAL came out beautifully, but I am looking forward to getting back into knitting with this pattern. My only concern is the sizing.
Pawsandknit
Great selection! I’ve had this on my To-Do list and now I’ll DO.
Sandi
This will be my first knitalong but it looks like great fun with a really good reason to finish the project!
ANNE
This looks like a fun project. It will be handy to havethis little shrug at work for the cool drafts. Now to the store to pick out the yarn and color. Happy Knitting!
Patricia
I’m excited about this KAL — I can’t wait to get started. I like that the shrug is long in the back.
Sheri
I can’t wait to get started on this! I have had Glamknits on my wishlist for awhile now, so this is a perfect opportunity for me.
Knit On!
Holly Kubick
I love the helpfulness of the KALs and CALs you have sponsored. This one looks like it will be great fun.
Holly
Michelle
What a beautiful shrug! Can’t wait to get started
Michelle
Beautiful, and the book looks like something I need to add to my library, too! Theses KALs and CALs are so informative, I’m sure I’ll learn a lot again. Thanks!
Elena
I’d love knitting this shrug! And to have this new book by Stephanie Japeö!
Claudia
My fav web designer! Go Steph! <a great pattern
Cheryl G
This is a great pattern for a KAL! Really looking forward to knitting with others on this one.
Mary
I’ve fallen in love with shrugs and have wanted to tackle one. This is just the motivation I need!
Naysa H
This is my first KAL and I’m so excited!! I’m a little nervous about the gauge as I tend to knit a little tight, I’m looking forward to learning a lot over the next several weeks!
Hannah B.
What a darling shrug! I’m from CT and I’ve knitted for many years, but am self-taught and there’s much I don’t know. I’m a little out of practice too.
Meredith
Awesome choice. Love it!!
Ashley
This looks really cool! I am excited that it comes in my size. I have to decide what color I want to make.
Diane in Northern CA
As a fan of Stefanie’s designs, and her blog, I am excited to have the KAL group beginning. I plan to use Cotton Ease for my teen daughter to toss over tank tops on cool California evenings.
Andrea
this looks like a fun project. I am an experienced knitter originally from Germany and now live in NM.
Bobbi Jo
I’m a first time KAL person. Glad to see that people have already given suggestions on substitution yarns – was leaning towards Vannas or Cotton. Will just have to make a quick stop at my local store and then I’ll be starting.
And I can always give it to one of 2 nieces if I make it too small for me. 🙂
Erin
I’ll have to find another yarn to use; I can’t work with wool without my hands breaking out. But it’s lovely!
Marty
I love the shrug.
Ros
Trendy, with it, catwalk stuff. The book must be fab. Can’t wait to start.
Addict-to-knit
Just finishing up the sweater on the cover of Stephanie’s book “fitted knits” and love it!
Looking forward to another of her designs!
christy fedirchuk
Hello all, i love the design of this next ‘knit along’ and wish i could join with you during the group process. Alas, i am trying to catch up with all of the knitting projects i have begun and have promised myself to not start something new until i have finished them all!!! (ah, what a personal obligation i have put upon myself!).
The designer, Stefanie Japel, has set out for us a gorgeous little shrug. just love the back of the garment, something i adore (well designed and consideration of the back of a article, especially ones that fit the form of the wearer so well).
I am going to check out the blog, as well to learn more from her, she seems so skilled!.
Since i have made it impossible to keep up with the group i will come and follow the process after the fact since the project and KAL is archived on the Lion site (thank you!). I love this little shrug and look forward to knitting it up some time in the near future. thanks to Lion brand and Stephanie!
Christine
I would LOVE to win Glam Knits!!!! I want some more LaLa in my life.
Jodi Grzeczka
I love the shrug — can’t wait to start. How does it look on a large-breasted woman?
mamasglory
Love this pattern!Don’t know if I’m a skilled enough knitter to finish it but I’m going to give it a try.
Jennifer Berendt
You read my mind. I was for something like this!
Trish ONeil
I love kals and this looks like a great project! Thanks!
Christine
This looks like fun. I love it.
Nicci
Hello I am new to the NAL, but have always wanted to share in it. I have been nitting for about 2 years and I have been trying a lot of new types of patterns, one of which was a silk lace that I think turned out fairly well. It would have been nice to have other people doing the same pattern to ask all of my questions to.
Cynthia Wilbanks
Never having worn a shrug, this will be a great time to knit one & see if I like the look on myself!
Jane
WOW! In these tough times we all need as much “Glam for the buck” as possible. The book looks great!
Cheryl Gomes
This is great for me to make for the young and trendy girls I have of my own and adopted. This is a good present idea. Can also be used as a bedjacket for the elderly.
Anne
I am excited I found this site and there are so many opportunities to learn.
Anne
I agree with Jane, we do need all the glam for the buck we can get! I love fibre arts. Thank you for this site.
Janice
Beautiful shrug! I can’t wait to get this on the needles!
Sandie
I haven’t tried the knit along yet…hoping to give it a shot.
Thnks!

Great choice! I didn’t even know there was LB Organic Wool; can’t wait to try it, since I LOVE the Organic Cotton. There aren’t many shrug patterns that come in plus sizes, and this one doesn’t look skimpy. Hope there’ll be lots of help on finishing, since I always dread it, and careful finishing will be important to this piece…
Carolyn
Living in South Carolina- I will need substitute cotton yarn or something else — please suggest dreamy yarn but economical that would keep our arms warm in the evening chill over the summer dresses! I am thinking about making for my granddaughters too! and they must have one to match for their doll. I have decided I only want to knit from the Top Down!! I’m an expert crocheter for 42 years but started knitting hats 3 years ago for Cancer patients.
Zontee says: Hi Carolyn, consider the Cotton-Ease or Nature’s Choice Organic Cotton as substitutes. Cotton-Ease is easy-care and because it is a 50/50 blend, it’s lighter and has better drape than plain cotton, while Nature’s Choice Organic Cotton is lofty and soft, making it great for garments.
claudia
Hello from Austria – my first KAL – will start in a few minutes… ;-))
Melissa
I’m so excited about this, I’m hoping this gets me out of the hat-sock-scarf cycle I’ve been stuck in the past couple of years!
Shay
Wow! That is one nice sweater. I’ll have to get my hands on some circular needles. I love that it’s organic wool!
Carleen
Question about needles. Where do I find 40 inch circular needles in a size 6? Lion Brand doesn’t seem to have them on their web pages and I’ve been looking for them for a couple of months to make a knitted jumper for my grandaughter. Looks like I’ll need two pair now! This shrug is too gorgeous to resist. This will be my first KAL as well, assuming I can get the needles!
Zontee says: Hi Carleen, check with your local craft store or yarn shop, or websites of craft chains, such as JoAnn.com or ACMoore.com, for 40″ circulars.
Julie
All I can say is WOW! with all the great support available, I’m feelin pretty brave about starting my first sweater/wrap KAL. I know we all want to be Glamourous & Sophisticated, and this looks like both! Thanks!
Vanessa
The perfect shrug!! Just what I have been looking for.
Ann
It’s All Good!!!!!!!
MonkeyGurl
Man, that’s cute! I love Stephanie’s designs.

Kendra
Sounds like a great KAL, I can’ wait!
Ashley
Yes! Free book! Please! =)
Donna Lea
I have longingly eyed the shrug patterns for the last year. I hope I now have enough knitting experience to “git ‘er done” and am looking forward to the KAL.
What a great pattern to share! Thank you!
Jessi Miller
I’ve been wanting to make a small layering sweater, so this is perfect! I’m an intermediate/advanced knitter (some lace experience, sometimes struggle with cables) in Atlanta GA.
Ann
I would love to make this my first KAL. Stephanie’s designs are beautiful.
dee
This is a really pretty item, and I’m so happy about the broad size range for the pattern. I’ve been knitting for 46 years, and I am in Arizona.
TRACIE
I’m looking forward to this kal. I really enjoyes the last one and learned alot. I hope this is as much fun as the cable luxe tunic. I got my pattern today and am looking for juct the right yarn. I’m thinking of maybe using microspun for summer wear.
Teresa
The design is very flattering. Thanks for the free pattern. Now to choose the color. …
seejenknit
whoo hoo – I’ve been waiting to knit this piece. perfect timing!
sarah
I am excited to try this out. Normally I skip because the pattern isn’t something I am interested but I think it is about time I knit something for myself 🙂
Caroline Harvey
What a perfect pattern for all hemispheres – here in NZ we are about to go into Winter and are experiencing a spectacular Autumn, so the Circle Shrug is a ‘must-have’. Look forward to showing you the results.
Nashie
Hi!
Nice pattern you pick for us!!!
Regards from Uruguay, South America!!!!
Natalia
stephanie
such an easy pattern for such a stylish piece!
Beth Curtis
Count me in! I have knit the “One Skein Wonder” form Glampyre at least 4 or 5 times so I know her patterns work. It is a really pretty sweater to wear with a bare dress or tank top. Looking forward to it.
Alice
What a lovely pattern! I’ve also never done a KAL, but there’s always a first time! I just have to pick the right yarn …
Tanya
I’m very excited about this KAL – lovely shrug!
Phyllis
Wow, I have been nervous about taking on a garment, but this KAL makes me feel braver!
Silvia McFarland
This is a great choice, I love Stefanie Japel’s designs!
I’ve ordered Cotton-Ease for this project because I wanted something more for Spring and Fall.
This will be my first shrug.
Happy knitting everyone!
Norma T. Kellenberger
I have never blogged or participated in an online knit along. I just ordered the materials and hope to have fun. Norma
Geraldine Handa
I can’t wait to start. Thanks for giving a chance to join this knit-a-long 😀
Amy Luo
I want to knit along as soon as final exams end! Don’t go too fast! 😛
Christa
Can’t wait for my yarn to arrive so that I can start this project..
Happy Knitting
Christa
Diane
I have started the shrug and come to the area where you pick up 268 stitches all around the shrug. This is overwhelming me at the moment. Does anyone have an easy way to do this so you come out with the correct amount of stitches without needing higher math?
Thanks
Diane
Hi Diane,
The pattern is written with the number of stitches picked up for each section (front left, back neck, front right, etc.) broken down into smaller segments, so that it’s easier to keep track of how many to pick up at each point. It may seem daunting when you look at that big final number, but if you just follow the pattern and pick up within each section, it’s not so bad.
Louise
I saw pattern last week and printed for a class I am facilitating at our continuation school. One of the students is ready to move up to a new project and thought this would be wonderful. How great that you have selected this pattern. I live in the CA desert and would also like to do in cotton so tomorrow will pursue this and let her know that she too can participate and blog along.
What fun!!! LEW:)
Goddess in the Groove
What a beautiful shrug! I am an intermediate knitter, so I will follow the blog and hopefully my shrug will fit ME when it is finished :).
Martine
I’m game! This one is worth it!
Katie
I am so glad you chose the circle shrug – I’ve wanted to try this technique and I look forward to the support of KAL. I adore the book too! If this is successful, I may try another ;). I have knit accessories – I love socks – but I haven’t finished a sweater yet. I cannot wear wool, so other yarn suggestions are appreciated. I also appreciate many of the comments posted so far, great ideas and suggestions. It’s nice to know someone has used the Lion Cotton for a sweater and was pleased, since I’ve tried other brands of cotton for dishrags to try them out and was sorely disappointed with the result. Thanks to all!
Wendy
what a gorgeous shrug! I want to knit one in every color 🙂
Kelsie
This looks like a great pattern! I can’t wai to get started! This will be my first KAL.
Katherine
Looking forward to this KAL.
I have never knitted a piece of real clothing before. I don’t think a hat and scarf counts. This will be a new challenge for me.
Katherine

Karen
this kal is such a great idea. it’s wonderful to involve community together with like minds. thanks!
Dee Weaver
I’m a fairly experienced knitter from England. I had already downloaded this pattern from a previous KD email, because I love the top-down design. I’m looking forward to my very first KAL.
Jacky
Brilliant – yes, please, I’m in!
Kat
I love this! I am signing right up for this KAL. Now, I need to get the yarn ordered. It is so cool to have so much feedback from the different groups. Thanks!
Esther
my my! what a beautiful shrug! i absolutley adore shrug-style tops, and am very glad that I am able to find patterns!
i’m a very skill-challenged knitter (have only just learnt the basics – and re-learning them, over and over again) but I very much enjoy the passion of making something by oneself, for oneself.
I live in Mebourne, Australia (shout out to all aussies up in here) and would probably like to join in the kint-a-long craziness if it can be recommended for baby-stepping beginners (if not, i’ll just have to level-up my skillz)
anyhow, this is a cool, unknown teriotory for me and i look forward to joining the krew >^._.^<
peace

Chloe
I’ve been wanting to knit this! Hooray!
Linnet
What a lovely pattern. I’m looking forward to it: this is just the sort of style I love to wear. I’m thinking I’ll look through my stash to see if I’ve got enough of something fab to knit it in. I’m an experienced knitter (since I was wee: I was taught by my grandmother and several great aunts).
marjanneke
What a lovely pattern for a KAL! Have fun everyone!
Vicki Morgan-Bogart
Beautiful pattern with great details. I think I’ll take a break from knitting socks & try this KAL.
Cindy Silverstein
I have been looking for a shrug pattern just recently and this is definitely the one! It’s beautiful. I’ve also wanted to try the new LB yarn specified in the pattern. This will be my first KAL, and i’m looking forward to knitting along with a group.
Pamela Burnet
What a great idea KAL. Am an experienced knitter (40yrs), love knitting for all ages and sizes and am looking forward to others comments. Live in NZ and we have fabulous merino wool.
Emily
This should be fun!
Mac Birrell
Yay! My very first KAL! I’m in New Zealand and it’s hard for me to source Lion Brand yarn – can anyone tell me a fair substitution? I really enjoy getting the Lion Brand newsletter and I hope that it becomes more commonly sold in New Zealand soon as I am an AVID knitter!
Have fun everyone, looking forward to KAL’ing with you all!!!!
Tonia
So looking forward to this and the free pattern is gorgeous. I’m a newbie from the United Kingdom and this is my very first KAL, although I’ve been knitting since I was about 10 and have about 30 or so years under my belt – so now you know my age as well.
Tanja
This shrug is exactly the kind I’ve been looking for myself! There are lots of patterns out there, but most of what I’ve found are pretty simple and I wanted mine to have something extra. I’m just hoping this isn’t beyond my skill level…
Michelle Moore
What a very interesting and attractive pattern. I am going to follow this KAL with great interest. (Might even make it for myself). Mac in NZ, by my calculations any aran weight wool would be okay. Lion brand wool seldom hits the shelves here in Australia although we have had a few odds and ends in Spotlight.
Thankyou to the people at Lion for your interesting newsletter and making this KAL possible.
Zontee says: Hi Jacky, Lion Brand yarns are available in Australia through our distributor, the Knitting Loft. You can also find UK/Australia equivalents for yarn weights on our Yarn by Weights guide. Hope that helps!
knitnanna
Haven’t done a KAL before. Love the pattern and the wide range of sizes. Going to try to make two, one for DD and hopefully one for myself.
Carol
Cute shrug!! I might join this one if I can get the yarn in time.
Maggie
Love this shrug!
Ana Reis
Love your designs!
Kat Robertson
Can’t wait to get started!! Perfect for chilly Spring/Summer evenings…
Kim Yue
I’m so excited to give this pattern a try! I have been looking for a shrug to wear over a multitude of sleeveless dresses (I DON’T DO SLEEVELESS!!! LOL) and this will be perfect. My only problem is to decide which color to make it….
Vicki Connell
I’ve never done a knit-a-long, but that shrug is super cute, and I am all about free patterns! I look forward to the info regarding gauge – I want the shrug to fit me when I am done, and I have not knit a garment yet, so a bit apprehensive.
Anne Peterson
Have been looking for such a pattern to knit this is perfect timing! Thanks much.
anne
Looking forward to it
Noreen Hatfield
This is great. Can,t wait to get started. Hope everone has a super time knitting this.
Mary Lynn
Great shrug. It looks like it would be just the thing to keep the chill off while knitting or reading or computing or out for dinner.
Carly
I just picked up my yarn yesterday! I’m going to use cotton-ease in Hazelnut. I’m really excited to make my first sweater.
Sarah
I’ve never done a knit along before either. I was really drawn to this pretty shrug. I’ve knitted a shrug before, but then never wore it since it didn’t turn out as planned. I think this knit along will help me improve my skills to make garments that are wearable.
Linda Browning
This looks like a beautiful project! I’m excited to begin my first KAL!
Lynn
Am trying to get a wedding afghan finished up so that I can join the knit-along.
Sue Howard
I’m in! I love to knit (my family says I’m addicted) and knit lots for others (prayer shawls, baby blankets, afghans). Am always cold inside in the summer, so have been looking for something exactly along these lines. I think it’s my turn for something! This will be my first KAL, too and my first grown-up size garment! I think I will go with the Cotton-Ease – I have used it before & it knits up like a dream. Cant wait to finish up current project & get started!
Kristi
I’ve never done a KAL either, but I like this pattern and the idea that it’s just beyond my comfort zone. I’m also hoping a KAL will also help me keep up the pace.
Plus, I too have drooled over Stefanie Japel’s designs!
Harlene LeVine
I’ve been looking for a new project to help eat up my stash. This will make a great gift. The pattern looks very interesting and will keep me from being bored. Can’t wait to see how it works up. Can’t wait to hear how others fare. Count me in.
Laura
What a beautiful sweater…count me in too!
Joyce
Awesome pattern!
Dale
The shrug is beautiful, but I’m going to have to sit this one out as well. I’m brand new to knitting, so I’m going to follow along instead of participating this time. I appreciated Zontee’s suggestion of less expensive yarns to substitute with. When I do try this pattern, it won’t be such a costly mistake if I mess up! 🙂
Pat
Wow, this makes me want to put away the crochet hook and dust off my knitting needels! Adorable!
Marilyn
Love Stephanie’s patterns…would love this book.
Madame Purl
Very cute shrug.
Leslie
What a cute shrug. I’m going to join this KAL and make it for my daughter’s birthday in June. Perfect timing.
Maialiisa
I definately will join this knit-along. It is lovely and just the thing I need!
Helena
I had never heard of KALs until the last one ended and was so disappointed. When this one was announced, I jumped at the chance, downloaded the pattern and ordered the yarn. Can’t wait to start this darling shrug – thank you for this opportunity!!
johanna
I love this shrug! It would be perfect for my friend. I will join for sure!
Kathleen
Best shrug for older women too because of the long torso section. Those cuties little shrugs are for little girls and slight young women. Thanks for a mature, and beautiful design.
Cynthia
Beautiful patterns to knit!
Viola
This Shrug is beautiful. I can’t wait to start.
Thank you for thie awesome pattern.
Wilma Simmons
I saw this pattern on the website and thought I would like to make it sometime. Now this is the incentive.
Wilma
Jen C.
Love this shrug! This will be my first KAL and I can’t wait to get started!
Sally
Can I start something else? How can I not? This will be my first knit along and maybe I will actually get it done….
Diane Royston
I’ve not joined a KAL previously, but love this pattern and hope I can find time to check in every week. I’ve downloaded the pattern and hope to pick up the yarn this week….I have an evening wedding in August in Canada that I think this would be perfect for! Thanks for the downloadable pattern!
Sindy Faddis
I have never done a shrug before. Maybe I will make this with my daughter in mind.
Vanessa Glova
I’ve never joined a KAL but this shrug is so pretty that I can’t resist participating. I’m an experienced knitter but slow. Hope I can keep up.
Michelle
YES!! I’ve been eagerly awaiting the new KAL! I’ve only knitted “beginner” patterns up until now, though. Is the “intermediate” shrug do-able for a self-taught knitter?
Tracy
Oh!
What a great shrug!
I just started learning to knit in January so I’m not sure I’m quite up to this level yet… I really wish I was!
Soon! : )
Shirley
I have been searching for a shrug…to use when sitting knitting in cooler weather. A shrug does not have sleeves to get my needles caught in so this is going to get me to actually knit one. Thank you and looking forward to this project in free moments from knitting the prayer shawls.
Noemy
Hi! just read about the KAL on the newsletter! I’m in LOVE with this shrug and anxious to collect the materials to start KALonging =P with you.
I’m from Brazil and my knitting skills are something around average.
But always looking to learn new stitches and techniques and, of course, making new knitting friends around the world!!!
Noemy.
Kelly S
Very nice choice for a KAL…I really enjoy Stefanie’s work! Her books are beautiful!
Kate
Such a cute pattern! I can’t wait to get started!
Mary Anne
This is a wonderful pattern for a cool summer evening. Do you suggest using Cotton-Ease for this project? Stephanie Japel is one of my favorite designers. She is a with it “now” kind of designer.
Zontee says: Hi Mary Anne, I agree with you — Stefanie is a very cool, modern designer and we’re so happy to have her hosting this KAL! As for Cotton-Ease, yes, I think it’s a great choice. Quite a few people have already mentioned that they plan on using it for this project, and I’ve used it for a (different) shrug of my own. It’s a great, light-weight, easy-care yarn, with much better drape than many plain cottons out there.
Judy
I love it. This is the perfect thing for the office which is always cold. Can’t wait to start!
Thank you for the perfect pattern.
Rhoda Weyr
I look forward to this… I’ve done one circular shrug, but without sleeves…. more like a vest… so I look forward to this! Rhoda
Becky Butler
Hello All,
I am anxious to make the shrug. I am new to KAL and excited about a new project!
Becky
Patricia
Great pattern! I can’t wait to try it.

Susan
What timing! I was just getting ready to cast on!!
Dawn Sparks
Love this, cannot wait to get started!
Robbie
This is a really cool shrug. Think I will make this for my daughter-in law – it would look great on her! Can’t wait to get started!
Bonne
I am fairly new to knitting have crocheted a while and some knitting when younger and just getting back into it. It looks like a fun pattern and having someone to talk about the steps and show what it shold look like at that point will definatly help.
LaRie
I’ve never participated in a KAL. Love the shrug, thank you for providing the pattern!
Laura
I love that book! Great choice for the KAL. I always enjoy Lion Brand!!
Bonnie Mc
Hi,
Love the Shrug. Wonder if I go up one size if it won’t be quite so fitted-older body, you know. I’m going to try to keep up!
This is fun!
shelly
I not only love this pattern but the color as well! I havent gotten up the courage to start clothing projects yet, but I printed out the pattern and plan on trying to make it soon!
Liz Thomas
What a lovely shrug! I’m from England and having just retired have more time to knit and do other things, which is wonderful. I have been knitting for years,in the old way, bottom up. I haven’t had the courage to start a top down pattern yet, so would love to join in on this one. Knitting with others will be a new thing for me,too Thank you for widening an oldies’ horizon.
Liz
Cathy
This is going to be great for my first kal Thanks
Andrea Weiss
Tempting, tempting… Shall I cast on my 5th or 6th project to join in? I have some yarn in my stash already has been waiting to be used. Looks lovely, and perfect for summer layering!
Jenai
I am fairly new to crochet and just began my journey into knitting. What a great piece to inspire me to become a knitter so that I can create something so lovely.
BabyBeth
I can’t wait to start on this shrug. I love Stefanie’s patterns.
Lori Lynn
What a great pattern! I’m excited to try this one. I’ve been looking for a shrug to make and haven’t found a pattern I liked.
Kathi
Looks like fun, and having the designer participate will make it better. I’m going to hand dye some LB Fisherman’s Wool for my shrug. Eager to get started.
Cindy
KAL shrug is awesome! Look forward to seeing the end results!
Julie B
This looks like fun and challenging. I think I should try this KAL. I have never done a KAL before, so it looks like a good time to jump in and try it.
Elaine Yarde
I am a new knitter but I love this pattern and look forward to trying my hand at it.
Mary Anna
Oh, how fun! I just knit my first clothing item – a shrug – over Easter weekend. This will be a fun new project!
Laura
Looks fun! I’m joining in-
Pat
I can’t wait to get started! Love the pattern!
I’ve already decided to use mushroom wool ease that I have in my stash, so now for the gauge swatch!
Karen
This lovely shrug looks a bit complicated, so I am happy that we are doing it as a knit along! Can’t wait to start, as it looks like the perfect project right now.
Jennifer
I have little time for knitting with a new baby and a 2, 4 and 7 yo. I like the flattering look of the wrap. It would be wonderful to knit at night something for myself. Is there a way to make it longer in the back or would it just get longer everywhere?
Hi Jennifer,
This shrug is designed with a few extra inches in length in the back that are worked before the ribbing is added. You could simply add to this length by knitting a few extra inches before you pick up for the ribbing. We can discuss this more as we get to that point int he KAL.
wendy hania
I’ve been knitting for years & am looking forward to the KAL. With wine tasting season just around the corner in Eastern WA, I’ll need a spiffy little warmer like this for cool evenings on the terrace.
Michelle
So pretty! I saw the picture on Ravelry, and then there was the link in my email inbox! Perfect!
Diane
I look forward to making this shrug and using the new Lion Organic, I have been wanting to make something with this since it was introduced.
Linda
Hello from Michigan. I have been a crocheter for about 50 years, a knitter for about 5 years, and a quilter for about 6 years.
I love this shrug, it will look great on my daughters. Guess I will have to make two.
Dori
I’ve been interested in doing a shrug for some time and just wasn’t comfortable trying it. This will be a great item for my first knit-along.
Josephine Harrell (Jo)
I love the idea of this project and all the support available. Loin Brand products are just the best. When I purchase Lion yarn, I know that I am purchasing a product that will produce a garment I will be proud to use and or wear. Clothing items made from Lion yarn hold their shape and the colors do not fade with use. I am always proud to give a gift made from Lion Brand yarn.
Jo

Also my first knit-a-long. I follow Stephanie’s blog and am excited to knit the shrug in a georgeous shade of teal. Now I’m off to swatch!
Karin Soster
Thank you for such an interesting and inspiring/challenging pattern to try. And it’s wonderful to have helpful tips so readily available along the way – like having a friend alongside providing guidance. Very much appreciated.
Kind regards,

This is exciting hope I’ll be able to keep up!

Both my adult daughter and daughter-in-law love this shrug and will look great in it. It is a hip and contemporary design… a far cry from the tea cozy knitting of years back. Can’t wait to get started adn to follow the groups progress. This is a first for me in a knit-along! Yippee!
Holly
I got hooked on KAL’s with the Cable Luxe Sweater, so I can’t wait to do another one! It was SUCH fun to make that sweater, especially knowing that others were doing it at the same time. I got LOTS and LOTS of compliments whenever I wore it later. I even made a second one for a friend. Now I can’t wait to make this Shrug. Christmas is coming, so maybe I can make several for gifts.
Connie
Knit Along has intrigued me for some time and I have decided to jump in on this one. Have knitted for many years but doing it via computers is a new concept for me.
Michelle
Very cute! I haven’t participated in a knit along before but I am going to give this one a try.
Stephanie
I love Stefanie’s work. I need a shrug and this one fits the bill!
Laura
I am excited and scared too. I haven’t knitted a garment like this before. I just can’t wait to see the finished project.
Sandra Peterson
WOW!! This is beautiful. This will be my first KAL. I am so looking forward to knitting up this shrug. THANK YOU, for choosing a pattern that will fit us “fuller” sized women!
Shannon Ethier
I’ve never participated in a KAL and I’m really looking forward to this one. This is a design that I could immediately think of about half a dozen different ways to wear it. I just peeked at Glam Knits at Amazon and from what I could see, all the patterns are wonderful.
I am really looking forward to this.
Cheryl Godwin
I can’t wait to make this, I want to make one for my daughter and one for me.
Susanne
Please advise on yardage. This pattern is in a huge range of sizes. Approximately how many yards are needed for medium, large, 1X?
Zontee says: Hi Susanne, to find out approximate yardage on a project, you would take the recommended number of balls for your specific size and multiply it by the yardage of the recommended yarn. In this case, the number of balls is:
5 (6, 7, 8, 9, 11) for S (M, L, 1X, 2X, 3X)
The yardage of LB Collection Organic Wool is: 185 yards
So the approximate yardage needed would be 925 (1110, 1295, 1480, 1665, 2035) yards.
Melissa
This will be my first KAL. I am a seasoned crocheter but have just started knitting. I hope I can keep up with this one. Looking forward to all the help!
Mary O
I had a great time doing the Moderne jacket CAL and love the pattern for this KAL, so I’m excited to join in. I just bought a sleeveless dress that needs something as a light cover and this will be perfect. Can’t wait to start!
Diane Rose
I have never done the knit-a-long before. I’ve been knitting since I was 13. I am WELL OVER 13 now and I am looking forward to learning something new. Times change, I want to change with them.
Maggie
I can’t wait to see the patterns Stephanie’s come up with! I’m currently knitting an adorable cardigan from Fitted Knits, and there so many other projects in that book I’d love to try!
Fifie O
Hi,
I’m a NYer, a long-time knitter, and I love, love, LOVE Stefanie Japel’s work. It’s always well thought out, beautifully crafted, and I find it inspiring. Although I’m not planning to make the shrug, I’m looking forward to reading on!
kelly
The last KAL I did was the Tree of Life afghan and it was super fun! I haven’t had time to join another one since, but this shrug is beautiful, and I’ve been needing a cute sweater so I’m going to have to join this knit along with you all 🙂 I just have to decide what color to use!
Kathleen A. Grom
Can’t wait to get started. This will be my first KAL and to think it will hosted by the designer. I’m very excited!
Amber Burroff
This pattern look great. I’m In!
Shelly
This is the cutest sweater! It’s so versatile- I can see myself wearing this with everything.
Pattie
This is my first KAL and I love the design. I have been looking for a cute sweater to wear over summer dresses. Thank you for sharing this pattern with us. I am heading out to our local yarn store to buy supplies today.
lisa
So looking forward to this !
thanks for all you do !

Sue
I’m a beginner knotter and have never tried this before, but I love the look of this shrug and a knit-along looks like SO much fun! I’m going to have to try and follow along.
Sue
Whoops, how about *knitter* instead of knotter?
Seema
I have done a Kal before but this would be a fun project. The Knit project is Simply marvelous and i already have the same color of Yarn available…i wouldnt want to miss any info on this kal.Looking forward to work and learn on this kal with such a great knitter…Thanks for hosting this.
Mary Kay
Like I need another project going, but I looooove Stefanie’s designs and this KAL sounds like fun!
Margaret
I am a fairly new knitter but am trying to branch out and try something different from squares and rectangles. Tried a couple of baby hats, did fine. Will I be biting off more than I can chew to try this project? I want something different but don’t want to get too discouraged and stop knitting if I try something too difficult.
Zontee says: Hi Margaret, read over the stitch explanation section and the abbreviations section, and click through to any explanations of the abbreviations. If you feel like you can handle these skills, go for it. If you feel like it may be too much for right now, come back later and try the pattern when you’re ready. All of the KAL posts will stay on blog.lionbrand.com under the “knit-along” category, so you can always come back!
Linda
Lovely pattern – my daughter is getting married in November and I would love to make this in a silky ecru color for her to wear with her strapless gown if it is cold!
Connie Miester
I loe this pattern! it would look beautiful in black for a cool evening, dressy or casual! Thanks for sharing this gorgeous pattern!
tammy
Unique shrug pattern!
Georg-Anne
This is a great staple piece to a summer wardrobe. Looking forward to knitting-along.
Christine
What a beautiful, feminine shrug. I’m looking forward to getting started!
Lita
This will be my first try at something with arms. Wish me luck.
kelly
awesome!
Susan
My first KAL too. And my first top-down knit too. I’m very tall, so I’m looking forward to being able to try it on as I go and adjust sleeve length, etc.
Caillile
Incredible! Patterns which are not “Grandma’s sweater” always are worth their weight in gold.

This is awesome! I am a huge fan of Stefanie’s work and look forward to following along with her.
Mary
I’ve never done a KAL before. Knitting has always been something I have done on my own, or with one other friend, so it will be wonderful to share thoughts, ideas, & questions with so many other people. I look forward to that experience!
Kathy
Love the pattern. This will be my very first Knit Along and I’m looking forward to this.
Wendy
I just joined the Bernat email list so this is the first time I’ve heard of KAL. It really sounds like fun. I’ve never had the nerve to try circular needles before, but this might be the pattern that pushes me to do it–it’s so beautiful and classic.
e Butler
great to see all these knitters doing this project!! can’t wait for some of the pictures and comments as we “go along” (GAL). i look forward to doing this KAL. THANKS!!!!
Linda
I have never done a kal and am excited to get started. The pattern looks absolutely beautiful.
DJ
Sounds like fun and a lovely pattern to test my skills. My usual problem is gauge. I have trouble making items to “fit”. I will probably end up with Vanna’s Choice yarn (love the color selection). How much would I buy (5 skeins?) for a size medium? I apologize if this has already been answered . . . but there are over 500 posts. I admit I didn’t readl them ALL. 🙂
Zontee says: Hi DJ, making a gauge swatch and then occasionally checking your gauge as you knit (to make sure you haven’t gotten tighter or looser) is the best way to guarantee the accuracy of your garment’s size. Also, take a look at the garment’s measurements before you get started. Compare it to your measurements so you know how it compares to your actual body size and you’ll get a better idea of fit.
When replacing a yarn, first multiply the original yarn’s yardage per ball (LB Collection Organic Wool) by however many balls is used for your size (in your case, you said 5) for the total yardage needed for your garment. Then divide this number by the yardage of your new yarn (in this case, Vanna’s Choice) for the number of balls you need in your new yarn. Tada!
Kelly Black
I have never done a knit-along, but am very excited about this pattern. If it goes well, I might knit it again for my neice, as it looks teen friendly.
Stef
This is such a cool project! I’ve been looking at pictures of finished shrugs on Ravelry (can you believe some knitters are finished already!?) and they’re super gorgeous and flattering!
Lourdes
I’ve never participated in a KAL (or CAL either!) but this looks doable! As I am one of those that start projects and never seems to be able to finish them, I hope that by doing it with everyone else I will have the motivation to see it to the end – and actually have a finished garment I can use! 🙂 I do hope I can manage, since I am also pretty new to knitting, always been more of a crocheter…
Mari
I am really looking forward to doing this and loved doing the cable tunic for my daughter. This will be for me for once.
Debbie
Can’t wait to start! I love shrugs and Stefanie’s designs so this is a great opportunity.
Lauren
Looking forward to trying this pattern and surprising my daughter!
Veronica
this will be my first knit along, so I am anxious to get started , i’ve been knitting for a number of years but there is always something new to learn, I just love this shrug pattern, I tried one but it was a flop so hopefully I’ll be able to do this one, thanks for the opportunity
Linda Tonner
I love this pretty garment! I have already imagined it in something black and smooth over an evening gown, or bright white or ivory, over a simple, straight winter wedding gown.
Linda
Regina
I love shrugs! But just haven’t found a knitted pattern I really liked, but I think the design to this one is just perfect and not complicated to work up. Can hardly wait to get started.
Lois Hooper
Nice design – I like things that are a bit above the usual run of the mill. Now will the dogs appreciate me in this glamourous creation? lol
Robin Hatlestad
I’m looking forward to following this KAL (my first KAL!) on ravelry! I have only been knitting since December 2007 and have just started knitting simple top down cardigans (the Lion Cropped Cardie was my latest).
On ravelry I am Paintgirl
Therese
This is the first KAL I’ve joined. Can’t wait to get started! Great choice of knits….Love the Glampyre site/blog anyway, so it’s nice to see this choice.
Thanks!
Monica
What a great pattern to KAL with. I’m so excited to join! I’m a big fan of Stefanie Japel, and have knit a couple of sweaters from her book Fitted Knits. I don’t have Glam Knits yet, but I’ve looked at some of the designs online and it looks just as fabulous as her first book.
Angie Divaris
I am so excited, as I have just joined your website, and living in South Africa we do not have access to patterns so I am really looking forward to making this shrug for my daughter
Linda
This is also my first KAL. I love the pattern. It should be a challenge. As I am allergic to wool, is there another type I can use without screwing up the pattern.
Zontee says: Hi Linda, yes, you may substitute other category 4 yarns, such as Vanna’s Choice (affordable, huge color selection), or Cotton-Ease (great drape, perfect for warm weather).
Dorothy L.
Not only will this be my first KAL, this will be my first knitted garment.
I am having a hard time understanding the measurements on the diagram in the pattern.
How would I figure out the circumference of the upper arm for a size 1X?
I have a fuller figure, with larger upper arms. Most RTW garments that fit great through the torso are too snug in the arms, and if I go a size larger, the look becomes frumpy with too wide shoulders and bagginess in the torso.
How can I tell if this pattern will work for me?
Hi Dorothy,
What you can do to figure out the upper arm measurement is to check out the pattern. In the section labelled “separate the sleeves from the body” you are given a stitch count. If you divide this by the stitch gauge, you’ll come up with a measurement in inches. Since this garment isn’t sized in terms of S, M, L, etc., but rather in bust measurement, I’m not sure which size you’d consider 1x…but let’s say it’s the 44-46″ bust size.
You’d have 69 sleeve sts. Divide this by your 4.5 sts per inch and you’ve got an upper arm circumference of 15.3 inches. Since this is a top-down raglan sweater, you can always adapt (add more stitches to or take some away from) this number once you get to that part of the pattern. We will discuss exactly how to add more width here when we get to that point of the KAL.
Gale
I am allergic to wool; can I substitute
Cotton Ease in the same amounts and number of stitches?
Zontee says: Hi Gale, yes, Cotton-Ease, like LB Collection Organic Wool is a category 4 (medium, worsted) yarn and has a comparable thickness. Check your gauge before you start, but Cotton-Ease will be a great substitute.
Bethe
Looking forward to this, need to gather up my materials quickly to make this happen in time. Great pattern! Have knitting projects coming up my ears and lined up for miles, but why not add another? Something to look forward to – thanks to Lion and to the designer.
Stampt
This looks interesting. I might try it.
Logan
Those are some amazing patterns! I’d love to have this book!
Antoinette
I’m excited to participate on this blog. It’s my first time and look forward to sharing ideas and learning new and exciting ways others knit. I love the Lion Brand site and look forward to sharing this site with my sisters in fun.
Thanks again for the free patterns.
Rachael Sage Payne
This is so beautiful! I love the dress in the book cover picture. I’d love to make it, although it looks far beyond anything I’ve tackled to date… those amazing sleeves! You have a gift. 🙂
I was reading through the pattern for the shrug, and have a question about a stitch: “M1P (MAKE 1 PURLWISE): Inc 1 st by picking up the bar between the next st and the st just knit and purling it.”
“..just knit and purling it?” Which do I do here?
Thanks! Rachael
Zontee says: Hi Rachael, the “just knit” refers to the “stitch knit just previously” or to put it another way, “the previous stitch (which was knitted)”.
Ellen Ekstrom
I’m looking forward to this project! I’m an intermediate knitter who’s just started knitting socks.
Brandie Grizzle
I can’t wait to get started! I guess you could say I’m an intermediate knitter, but, I’m not afraid to try anything more advanced.
mary devries
hey this looks lkie a challenge and what a way to improve my skills. Also what a way to meeet knitters from all over.
Carol
Beautiful…can’t wait to get started!
Kathy
In knitting, my focus is on Charity knitting, specifically Chemo Caps. The shug shown is beautiful. I just discovered back scrubbers through you website. Guess what each female on my Christmas list is getting??? I will couple it with sugar scrubs I just learned to make, but need to get going….I have 25 to make and pkge before Christmas, thank you for including me in your “circle”.
rhonda
I am new to blogging, new to a KAL, new to “knitting from the top down. I’m excited to work on the textured circle shrug and getting my feet wet with all the new experiences I’m starting thanks to Lion Brand!
Trish
I’ve never done a KAL before, but I’m thinking I’m going to have to join this one… It’s a beautiful pattern!
Tammy Munko
Great summer sweater!
Grace
How elegant! This looks really fun!
Caroline
I have been eyeballing this pattern for ages, so this is a good push to get me going! Very excited!
Debbie Hixson
I love this pattern, but will definitely need to use a different yarn. I live in Austin, Texas and it is already 90 degrees! I like to have a wrap for the over air-conditioned places in the summer.
AnnaMc
My teenage grand-daughters have searched for a way to bring modesty to the prom. I think I’ve found it and look forward to this challenge.
Judy McCain
I’m glad to see I won’t be the only KAL novice. I fear this project may be a little out of my league. My most complicated project to date has been socks, 2 at a time on circular needles. Texture has not been much of a factor so far in my knitting, so this will be a challenge, I’m sure. I think this shrug would suit me well in cotton, so I’m looking forward to the designer’s suggestions for alternative yarns.
Alicia
love the choice can’t wait to get started!
Veronica
What a pretty shrug! Will be a fun KAL, I’m sure!
Sue Dole
This will be the first knit along for me. I love shrugs but most patterns only cover the shoulders and arms. I really like the design and am looking forward to this project.
dani hartvigsen
I am so excited for this KAL. I am a beginner! I have already learned so much in just trying to pick out a yarn and needle size to match the guage! I may knit two!
Melanie
YAY!! I’ve been meaning to start something like this but have no idea where to start. I’ll probably be the snail of the group but will try my hardest. Happy knitting!
Denise
This looks like a fun knit!
Dale
Hi there ~
What advice would you give the beginner knitter who is standing on the edge contemplating taking the leap to more advanced patterns? 🙂
This looks so lovely and I want to make it for my daughter. I am adventurous but I really think I need to hear from you what will be helpful to ‘keep in mind’ as we begin the project.
Thanks,
Dale in CT
Zontee says: Hi Dale, my favorite advice for knitters who haven’t taken on more advanced patterns is: when in doubt, trust the pattern. If something sounds a little bit funny in terms of new skills or directions, just go with it. Sometimes they sound a little out there, but they are often in there for a reason. Just take a deep breath, reread, and try it. Remember, you can always rip back a couple stitches if it looks off.
If you don’t understand a term, there are many websites that provide more detailed explanations. On LionBrand.com, you can go to the Learning Center tab for more help with abbreviations (and more details on how to do them) or you can check out websites like KnittingHelp.com or YouTube.com for videos. Good luck!
Ann
Very exciting. I love Stephanie’s patterns – have made two already from Fitted Knits and I haven’t knit in 30 years. Great to have a success right off the bat.
Kim R.
Beautiful pattern, looking forward to the KAL!
Lucy
Always preferred crochet, but this looks like a pattern I could get into. Have the perferct person to make it for. Also this will be a way I can improve my knitting skills and connect with other knitters.
Barbara Breuer
I am a fairly new knitter and have never done anything this complicated. However, I will be done with my MBA in less than a month and will be going like crazy to start on gifts for the holiday season! Wish me luck. The hardest part for me is deciphering all the abbreviations.
Karen
I did the Tree of Life afghan KAL. I figure I will try this. Like another person said, the sleeves seem a bit small, so if I make substitutions, I’ll post them to the list!
Laurie
Rachel in message 590 points out a fun problem with the English language:
I was reading through the pattern for the shrug, and have a question about a stitch: “M1P (MAKE 1 PURLWISE): Inc 1 st by picking up the bar between the next st and the st just knit and purling it.â€
“..just knit and purling it?†Which do I do here?
Try reading the instruction as: Inc 1 st by picking up the bar between the next st and (the st just knit) and purling it.
“just knit” is a modifier on the stitch, not an instruction. Doncha just love this language?
Mamie Lo-Burnette
Great choice for another knit-along! I can’t wait to cast on 🙂
Sarah
Glad to see there are a lot of newbies to this interenet knitting circle thing! This is a first time for me, also. The shrug is just too cute to pass up!
Susan
Love the pattern, and this will be such fun.
Cheryl
I have not done a knit a long, and the first picture of this looks good. Be sure to check out the picture of the back since it is really beautiful with flattering lines. I took several (too many!!) years off from knitting and I regret it :(. Now I am trying to catch up on my skills and learn new ones. This Web site has been a great inspiration to me, and I love the e-mails with new ideas.
Lisa
I am a huge fan of shrugs and vintage styles. This knit-a-long is for me! I am ready!

Hi all, have never participated in a KAL but sounds like it will be fun and I will end up with a lovely shrug as well.
Shaun
beautiful shrug. can’t wait to get started, been wanting to make something for my girlfriend for a while.
Sandy
Thanks for doing this! I’m looking forward to knitting the shrug.
Jennifer
Going to give it a go I live in Northern Ireland. Our wool is given different names here, so was glad to see the suggestions for cotton etc. I too might have to make the sleeves a bit lager for the old ‘bingo wings’ to fit in!!!
Barb
This KAL project looks very interesting. Downloading pattern and making shopping plans.
Amanda Gravette
This is a super cute pattern. As this is the most ambitious knitting project I have tried I am looking forward to learning from everyone else. I am also looking forward to seeing what other alternate yarns are suggested.
Nancy
Looks like a fun pattern! My sister and I will be participating…yea!
wiz3283
I am fairly new to knitting and wanted to try something a bit more chalenging for me. This shrug looks like a good place to start building some new skills. Thanks for hosting this KAL.
Marilee
I love the design, but will try it in Cottonease, which is more suitable for summer. Air conditioning is often chilly, so a nice easy wrap is great to take along to restaurants and the movie theater.
I hope the next CAL project will be a shrug too, as I have just taken up crochet and appreciate stylish, easy to wear designs.
Liza Cheraz
I have been looking for this pattern to make a Christmas gift for a d-i-l who lives in Canada and is the size I’ve always admired: oh so tiny! I’m on-board and can’t wait to begin the project!
Barrett
Oooooh gorgeous!! I can’t wait to try it!
CaroleAnn Camp
I’ve never done this before, but it looks like fun. I’m in the middle of 2 crochet afghans, a knitted sweater for my grand-daughter several cross-stitch pictures and 2 quilts. I love starting new things, have a little trouble finishing though!!!
Monica
Hi all, I’m coming to you from Quito, Ecuador and I’m really excited about doing this. I’ve never participated in a knit along so here I go!! I’m in the middle of a shawl I’m knitting for my mom (it was supposed to be a Christmas gift but….maybe I’ll get it done for mother’s day!!), so I’ll start as soon as I get that finished.
Marsha A
Well I’m a crocheter by habit but this is just soooo cute I got my knitting needles out.
You’ll have to forgive me but I will probably be asking ALOT of questions.
Thanks
Marsha
Charity
I’ve loved Stephanie’s patterns from Fitted Knits, and am looking forward to trying out this shrug–it looks like the perfect sweater to keep shoulders warm in icy office air conditioning.
Barby
This looks like fun! I love the pattern:)
laila
i was thinking about attempting my first sweater- but a KAL is really what i need so i can get help with so many others that are working on it at the same time! great idea & love the shrug! xox! laila
Sarah
This sweater is great! I am so excited about getting started – I’m getting my yarn this afternoon! 🙂
Karen
This is exactly the kind of versitile shrug pattern I’ve been looking for. Looking forward to a knit-along.
LThomps
Signing in from Alaska.
This looks great for the summery weather coming (hopefully soon!). I haven’t done a KAL before so I fear my knitting skills aren’t quite up to par for this one, though I may learn some techniques. Wouldn’t this look great in a lavender?? Could be spring or fall wear, then!
Also looking forward to the CAL!! My crocheting skills are better 🙂
Janet McFarren
Thanks for making such a glamorous pattern available. Can’t wait to start it.
Mary
I am excited to participate in my first KAL! I can’t wait! Hope it does not turn out to be too difficult. Love the pattern. Thanks for providing it for free! (My favorite price!)
Maggie
I would love to make this shrug for my 14 years old granddaugter. I’m a beginner so it will be a challenge trying to knit this but I’ll give a try. I will follow this blog and Stefanie’s lessons. Thank you for this beautiful pattern and the opportunity to learn more about knitting in this website.
Iris
A shrug is just what I’ve been looking for – warmth for my back and shoulders without worrying about a shawl slipping off. This will be my first KAL and since I’m a slow knitter I may not be able to keep up, but I’ll try,
Cynthia
Wow! This is so awesome! I would love to make this! I do birthdays so if I want it for myself I would have to wait till October. But maybe my daughter-in-law would like it! I’ve never done a knit along, but I find it very exciting!
Charon Carver
Great design! Just what I’ve been looking for.
Andrea
This is a gorgeous pattern. I’m not sure how I will do given I’ve never made a shrug or any other type of garb. Very exciting!! Looking forward to starting the adventure…
Andrea Van Delden
This will be my first KAL and i am very excited. This pattern will be perfect for my 15 year old grand daughter for Christmas. As I get older I lean towards knitting uncomplicated patterns; I hope this isn’t too tricky!
Janet Lasky
This is great, can’t wait to get started! Thanks so much! I wonder how many I will make????
Sarah
What is the ease on this garment? You say 32″ inch bust, but is that with negative ease? What size bust does the 32″ fabric fit?
Hi Sarah, We’ll go over this in the first blog post on Thursday. Since the garment doesn’t actually cover the bust, take a look at the schematic and choose the cross-back measurement that is closest to your actual cross-back measurement. (Or to the measurement you’d like the garment to have.)
Brenda
This is my first time knitting with other knitters. I hope I will be able to follow along. I am very excited about this knit along. I think it will be like the knitters clubs that I read about in some of the fictions stories I have read.
Kimberly T
I am a beginner knitter and unsure I have the skill set for this pattern but, it is soooo cute I may give it a shot! I will certainly follow along as I’ve never done a KAL before and think it will be a fun and new experience. I love the textured “thing”. ;0)
Kimberly T, Castle Rock, Co.
Renee
This looks SO glam – I am already picking out the yarn!
Linda Copas
Just a darling garment, and absolutely perfect for my absolutely perfect daughter-in-law. Now, to try to choose a color. With large needles, should be a quick knit, and I’ll be ready for Christmas early. The question is, will I be able to keep from giving it to her as soon as it is done, thereby sabotaging my own plan, and racing to make something else to give her for Christmas!
Audrey M. DeNeui
I love the pattern! It’s so nice that these knit and crochet along patterns have size options for “traditionally built” ladies such as myself. This way, I don’t have to do math! Yaaay!
I have problems finding enough light to knit at home so we’ll see how many years it takes me to finish it! Ha.
Audrey
lainiekazan
I’ve never done this before, so I’m looking foward to the fun. Any chance we can get the pattern for the previous project (Cable Luxe Tunic)?
This shrug will be perfect for the teen in my life, especially since the yarn comes in eggplant (purple is her favorite color)!
Amanda Blau
I had been thinking about making this since I saw it. yay kal!
Jean
Love the look of Stefanie’s patterns, and this one is no different. Gorgeous!
Jin Ah
This shrug looks so cute!
Cyndi Cassidy
Wow! great pattern. I can make one for myself, my daughters and granddaughters. Thank you for sharing! I don’t often follow a pattern but with the numbers for all the sizes I can use it as a springboard for other ideas too. 🙂 Looking forward to the KAL and I’ll try to stick to the pattern as written, at least for the first one. 😉
Nancyanne
Perfect timing, I wanted to knit a shrug for my daughter in law for Christmas!
Aileen
This is my first time in joining a KAL, so I am excited. I usually find a pattern I like and bumble through the directions. My kids call me the “rip out queen”, but I always finish the project and it is perfect. I love the shrug, my daughers will love these as gifts and this comes out just in time to be finished for Christmas gifts. You can never start too early, right ladies?
Kathy Deutsch
Looking forward to the challenge!
Linda Andews
This is the year I returned to knitting and this KAL will give me the confidence to tackle something more challenging.
Thanks
Deanna
This is my first KAL.
Karina Maza
Love the shrug… let’s cast on!
lindakelso
As a knitting teacher, I love the KALs. It’s like being the student again! Plus I appreciate the support and love the company. I recommend these to my students as well as the LionBrand website. They use them and then come back and say you said do it this way but LionBrand says something different…what should I do? LOL. I always suggest they try different approaches…that’s where the KALs are so great…lots of ways to get to the same place. Thanks for all you do. linda
Elizabeth
Hi–Thanks for offering yarn options–that was very thoughtful to do for the budget concsious. I really wanted to join the NAL but the price of the suggested yarn was a little discouraging. The optional yarn choices are within my budget…so now I can!! Love this pattern-very modern!!
Tracy
This is my first KAL. I’m looking forward to the whole concept. And my first home-made shrug!
Joanne
My first KAL and I’m so looking forward to it. I’ve made 3 items from the Fitted Knit book and am looking forward to trying something from Glam Knits. Let the fun begin!!
Janet
This is a fabulous little shrug. Glad to join the knit-a-long. The gauge will work perfectly with so much of my stash … just a question of picking a color 🙂
Lisa
Picked up the yarn today–wow, it’s so soft. It will be gorgeous.
Marilyn
I don’t usually wear this style with being overweight but I’m excited and want to give this pattern a try. Thanks, Lionbrand!
Alison
I’ve only just found this so hope I’m not too late to start. The shrug is lovely.
Pam
Wonderful pattern!
Diana
This is my first KAL. I’ve considered knitting the February sweater on Ravelry but I’m not ready to embark on a project that large. I’m looking forward to knitting this shrug and having it finished to wear in the autumn.
Debbie
I am very excited to join in this knit along! KAL’s are wonderful to keep you motivated and inspired byt hearing about everyone’s progress. The design selected is just perfect! It can be worn any time of year. Now to gather my materials.
Tisha
I would love to knit this shrug!
Michelle
I’m with Sophia – love this project, but nervous about size/gauge as I’ve only done projects that aren’t specific.
SuzQTee
This is so gorgeous! I can see me wearing it soon. 🙂

I just finished my first shrug and can’t wait to start this one!
Gloria
Looks like fun! Maybe I’ll give it a go.

I’m so excited I already started. So far..seems fairly easy. Thanks so much for the pattern!
Debbie
How fun! I had just downloaded this pattern last week. Then I got the email about the KAL. I’ve never done one, but am looking forward to it. Must go get the supplies on my lunch hour today.

Great Looking Shrug, looking forward to doing it.

Lovely pattern. I’m looking forward to giving it a try.

This is a 1st for me. Reallly new to knitting, but it’s a habit I have bad……
Can’t wait!
Robbin
I love this shrug. I am hoping to find the time to do this KAL – and the justification to buy the yarn!
Leona
Hi Everyone! I would call myself an advanced, but constantly, learning/enhancing my skill, type knitter. I have toyed with the idea of a shrug previously, but never saw one that was as appealing as this one! This project will be a birthday gift for my niece so I hope I succeed! Thanks for this opportunity…this too will be my first KAL. Yay!!!
Stephanie R.
New to knitting and never heard of a knit along. What a terrific idea!
Julie
I’ve never tried a KAL, so I’m excited about this one. Lots of new knitting skills to learn and a beautiful shrug when I’m done!
Felicia from sweetgeorgia
For years now, I’ve been a big fan of Stephanie’s designs… I’m looking forward to knitting this beautiful little shrug… and I’m even dyeing some yarn specifically for it… It’ll be the perfect thing to wear on cool summer nights in Vancouver!
Jennifer
Great project–very pretty.
Mary
I’m new to KAL, too, and what a great pattern to start with!
Elizabeth Delisi
I love the textured stripes on the sleeves and back. Great shrug! And I especially love that it comes in larger sizes. Not all of us are a perfect size 2. 🙂 Thanks for making this available! Can’t wait to get started.
PatGLex
Like someone else earlier on, I bought all the stuff for the Cable Luxe Tunic, but didn’t get a chance to start it before the weather started warming up! (I’ll save it for a fall project…) I love shrugs, although I’ve never made one, and I’ve collected bunches of patterns, intending to make one. I think this will be the one I actually do make — it will be so helpful to be “accountable” to a group!

Oooh! This may be a good use for some of the yarn i purchased at the Maryland Wool and Sheep Festival! Looking forward to joining all of you!

The shrug looks gorgeous!! I love the back. Now off to the shops for the yarn.

I’m looking forward to knitting this! IT looks like so much fun and I think I’ll get a lot of use wearing it too!

I will be doing this KAL. Can’t wait.
Thank You.

Very nice pattern. I am looking forward to this KAL. Thanks for the chance to participate.
Jennifer
Wow, I’ve been looking for a shrug pattern. Thanks!
Astrid
Wow, this looks like it will be a lot of fun. Gonna try my first knit-along! Great pattern!

I plan on making 2 of this shrug at the same time. One for me and one for my sons girlfriend. I am a novice knitter but know the basics and can read instruction well. I can’t wait to see how it all turns out. This KAL should keep me on task as I need some encouragement now and then.
Lynda Kent
this is a fabulous idea – i can’t wait to get started – gotta get me some more yarn though – yikes – i better hurry
Leslie
I was looking at the pattern in order to go buy the wool. All I can see is 5 balls in the order section. Is it correct to assume that all sizes can be made with 5 balls?
Zontee says: Hi Leslie, I’m not sure where you’re looking, but in the Bill of Materials, it says 5 balls and then lists alternative quantities of (6, 7, 8, 9, 11) for the rest of the sizes (M, L, 1X, 2X, 3X). If you’re ordering from our website, be sure to change the amount in your basket according to the amount you need for your size of the shrug.

Can’t wait to get started on my first KAL – thanks for the inspiration to join in with the lovely pattern. It may be a bit of a stretch for my skills but with all the online support, I can’t go wrong!

Hi!! I’m from Brazil and have been knitting since last year, but I hope I’ll be able to make this beautiful pattern. Thanks for the opportunity!

Thanks for the download. This is a true KAL with sizing and style for every knitter. Looking forward to it!

I can’t wait, I have tried to teach myself to knit (as I usually crochet since I was 8 yrs old) but couln’t. Friends have tried to teach me but I couldn’t get it. I went to a class at A C Moore and still couldn’t. I went to a class at a public school at nite and had the most wonderful teacher and met a great group of knitters whom I still meet with every two weeks at B&N to knit. I am going to try this, it’s my first KAL and I am 64 years young. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to have all these new friends to help me through.
Toodles!

Yeah! I am so excited about this KAL. I love this beautiful pattern. I bought a soft yellow cotton/acrylic blend yarn so it is a little cooler and I can wear it in the warmer weather here in North Carolina. Thank you Lion Brand for doing these!

Oooh what a great knitalong – I’m in for this one!
Carrie
So excited for a new project!
Lucy
I am in a knitting group and am discovering wonderful patterns for knitting beyond the traditional dish cloth. This pattern looks extremely challenging for me, but I am ready for a challenge, with a little hand holding. I recently tried to knit socks and a summer tank for my little one, but neither project worked out. Feeling very frustrated and ready to start something new – especially if there is online help included. Thanks for this. I look forward to participating in my first KAL…
Karen
This will be a perfect Christmas gift for my daughter and daughter-in-law who live a half-mile from each other and share clothes! I’ll pick different colors…and they’ll be delighted! Thank you!
Deborah Weaver
OH MY! I’m entranced by this pattern! but, oh my! Can I do this? Is it too hard ? ? ? Scared, but excited, I’m gathering my materials! HOO HAW Let the fun begin!
Lesley
Can’t wait to get started on this one. What a beautiful pattern in such a lovely yarn. I think I’ll make mine out of the teal LB organic wool.
Patti
This is really lovely – I’ve never done a KAL, but I’ve always wanted to, and I’ve always wanted to do a top down. Can’t wait.
Ruth
This is my first attempt at something like this, I will be keeping track closely, just so I don’t lose my mind. Scarey
Susie
Excited to see this! I will try to get my act together enough to follow along.
Laura
I’m not sure whether to make this for me or one of my daughters. I haven’t knitted a shrug like this but I have crocheted a few and I’m looking forward to seeing the differences.
Judy Nies
I’m in! This is perfect for my daughter.
Laurel
Great shrug! Looking forward to working the pattern with the group.
Libby
My first KAL too, and I am fascinated by the idea of knitting along with so many other people, worldwide! Like everyone else, I’m inspired by the lovely pattern and the top-down technique too. At first I was wondering if I would choose a colour for my daughter, but nah, I think this one should be for me!
Lezli
I’m excited to get started! I’ve never done a KAL before and have the Fitted Knits book and love the designs. This should be a great summer shug to have.
Kerry
This is an excellent choice for a KAL — suitable for all ages/figure types. I’m looking forward to getting started!
Nancy Ingram
I have been following Stephanie for about 4 years. Love, love, love her designs and have done quite a few. Please comment on the sleeve width and how we can adjust it. I am not heavy, but the sleeves do run tight. Do we just add a few extra rows to make them a little larger? Many thanks, I am looking forward to this one.
Nancy
Stefanie says: Hi Nancy!
Great to hear from you. We’ll talk about this more as we go through the pattern but my favorite thing about TDR (top-down-raglan) sweaters is just how adaptable they are. It’s totally possible to add stitches to the under arm without adding bulk to the body of the sweater. If you add rows, you’re also adding width to the body itself, so I’ll show you how to add stitches just to the armhole section.
Stay Tuned!
Stefanie.
Mary
Its’s such a cute pattern. I can’t wait to get started!
Shannon
What a beautiful item…makes me want to run out and buy the yarn straightaway. Elegant; it would look lovely with a simple dress for a special occasion…
Nancy Ingram
Nancy here again you would think I would have Stefanie’s name spelled correctly after 4 years!
rose morisoli
My friend and i both like this. i think we will both try it. Now to find the perfect yarn.
Taima R
I am up for the challenge. Excited to see how it goes.
D.J.
I had already printed this pattern out as my next project and now I have a KAL too?!? Too fabulous!
SnowCat MacDobhran
I might actually try this. I usually don’t like bolereos, but I like how this actually has a back.
Judy Nies
This is perfect for my daughter whio is going to college in the fall. I’m a “constant knitter” always looking for a new project. Thanks.
dani hartvigsen
I am still purchasing the needles that I will use. Because of my guage (and the yarn that I am using), I will be using a size 6 (instead of a size 8)in the 29″ circular knitting needle. Do I need to also decrease the size of the 40″ circular needle from a size 6 to a size 4 then, or would I go ahead and use the size 6?
Zontee says: Hi Dani, you’ll want to get a smaller size needle then. A size 4 should be fine.
Jeanne S
A little intimidated, but itching to get started.
Lori
What a lovely, classic looking shrug. Way more elegant than the usual circle shrug you find out there. This will be my first KAL, but I can’t wait to get started.
Cindy
Looks just like the project for me. Glad i receive the emails!!! Thanks again!!!
Zora
I’ll be making 2 – daughter and DIL.
Chris Schneider
This will be just the motivation I need to actually finish a project!! I’m in!
Betty
I love shrugs and this is the most stylish I’ve seen yet. Can’t wait to get started!
Barbara
As per the post #20 by Lani on 4/30/09 I would like to see the width of the arms before I start this project. I think they look too tight from the photo and there is no measurements on the schematic drawing. Is it possible to increase the sleeves slightly for more comfort, especially if we are going to wear the shrug over something with a little bit of sleeve, since they are worked seperate from the body? Would appreciate any suggestions from the designer before I invest time and money to find out it doesn’t fit well.
Keri
I can’t wait to start, I have some Noro Silk Garden that will make a beautiful shrug I’m sure.
Letha
I’ve been a fan of Ms. Japel for quite a while and am very excited to see one of her designs featured on this KAL.
Eileen
This is a beautiful design. I would LOVE to knit along but I am a beginner knitter. So far I’ve only made simple scarf, hats, and gloves. I took a look at the pattern and it just seems confusing. Is this pattern too advance for my level?
Loretha
Looks complicated, but I am going to try to participate in the knit along, this will be my first knit along, and I have been waiting for something simple. But everything looks complicated.
Amélie
This is my first time in a KAL. Nice project to start with!
BEB
I’m looking forward to finding out what a knit along is all about!
Cora Shaw
I am soooooo excited. I had actually bought the book before the KAL had been announced…lol.
This looks like fun!
Cora
Julia
This really is a lovely shrug! I’d love to see it on a few “real” people to know whether or not I’d it would complement me. I’m sure it would look great on my daughter, hmmm. . .would she wear it?! I’ve made other wearables–sometimes have to try a couple times to get it right, but I might give this a whirl! Gotta finish up some other projects first, though, but I’ll enjoy following along.
Barbara
I’m glad to see a stylish pattern in 3X
Peggy Mathis
I love Glampyre Knits, and I love the KAL. Thanks LionBrand!
Nancy Mc
Beautiful. Can’t wait to start. I have been following glampyre for a while now!
N
Maureen
Thx for a classy pattern in a large size
xox
Carol McClain
I downloaded the pattern and showed it to my daughter on Sunday. I have been wanting to knit her a shrug. Found one she likes! This will be my first KnitAlong. I have been knitting for 55 years–taught myself @ age 9.
Dazie
I’m in! I’ve been looking for over a month now for a shrug to go with a sleeveless dress I bought and this looks right up the alley!
Pamela McKee
What a beautiful shrug! I have been an avid fan of yours Stefanie for many years now. I first learned of you from knitty.com and have been following your work ever since. You are truly gifted and I am looking forward to making this beautiful creation of yours (and hoping to win a copy of your book)!
Sarah
I was so excited to see this in my inbox as I had recently been drooling over the glam knits book in the local university book store. I often admire sweater patterns but know they are probably not for me because they aren’t tailored enough. On the other hand, the more tailored, the more shaping etc, and as I have very little experience with the nuances of shaping I tend to stay clear of anything that looks like its heavy on the counting. I’ve knit one shrug to date, but it was essentially a wide scarf that I seamed on both ends to create sleeves. I’m in the middle of my first sweater (for my boyfriend) and am just about to start in on the shoulders, neck, and then the sleeves. So this pattern seems like an ideal way to jump in to a more fitted pattern, play with new shapes and colors, and learn something new in the process.
I would love to try this pattern with long sleeves…
DeborahKaye
Having never knit anything like this stylish shrug before, I am really looking forward to attempting this pattern with the guidence of the knit along community! My daughter will love this!
Denise Koster
I enjoy knit alongs, but I am so slow! I’m just about ready to start the first KAL–and this is what, number four? Oh, well. I’ll catch up or I won’t. Denise
Angel S.
I love the shrug, especially the back-beautiful!
Alesia
Thanks again for this opportunity. Having just recently taught myself to knit (still learning…)I think this is a great way to learn more. Looking forward to it!
Van
I love Stefanie Japel’s designs. Great choice for a KAL.
Sarah Lancaster
Pretty pattern. I’m looking forward to it. I especially like the texture on the back. I think I’ll have to flare the sleeves out, since I can’t stand tight sleeves on my arms.
California Annie
My first KAL… I’m very excited to try this out. I’ll be making it in a larger size but short waisted so I’m sure I’ll be needing help. Looking forward to your insights and combined wealth of knowledge.
Leanne Suplicki
I LOVE this shrug, but I’m a crochet-er, not a knitter. If anyone converts this, could you possibly share? Or does anyone know where I could find a similar style in crochet? THANKS! 🙂
Zontee says: Hi Leanne, if you’re looking for similar crochet styles, go to LionBrand.com and click on the “Patterns” tab. Use the drop-down menus to find the garment with the specific craft you want and the type you want or try different combinations. For a great crochet shrug, try our Four Seasons Bolero OR for a similarly ribbed crochet sweater, try our Side-to-Side Cowl Neck Sweater.
laura
One look at this pattern has me all excited to complete the lace shawl I’m almost finished with. . . so that I can start this! I think I’ll choose a burgundy or blue as green makes me look sick. Grazie for the gorgeous pattern!
Tamara
I’m so excited about this project and the idea of it being a KAL! It will be my first complete sweater; I’ve knitted arm wristers and shawls, but have yet to put them together. I’m also hoping to find some local knitters to join in on the fun.
Laura G.
This is a great KAL! I’ve always wanted to join one, and this a project I really like. It’s also great that the designer will be on hand in case I run into a tricky bit. Thanks Lion Brand!
Laura G. New Jersey, USA
Melissa
Pretty! I’m looking forward to making it my first big project! (beyond the usual hats and scarves)
Sharon
This looks very exciting. Will have to find some cool colour in Cotton-Ease as I am allergic to wool.
Pat S.
Looks like a fun pattern – I plan to make it for my daughter-in-law for Christmas!
Steph G.
What a gorgeous shrug! This should be a fun knit! 🙂
Jenny
This is such a beautiful shrug. I can’t wait to make it!
Susan
I am a long time beginner. I basically just knit hats, and scarfs. The pattern is probably beyond my skill set, but the shrug is so adorable that I can’t resist leaping from my comfort zone, and taking up the challenge!
Kim
Very cute shrug. And I’ve never made myself a sweater…only baby ones. This is a great place to start. YAY!!
Pam
Alright I have never done this before but I really like the shrug so I am going to jump in and give it a try. I have stayed with beginner things for too long. Can’t wait to see how it turns out.
Pam
This looks like fun. I have never done a knit along. It looks like a great project.
Angela
This is my first KAL and I can’t wait to start! The shrug is very cute so it will be a great gift… or addition to my closet. 🙂
Dolores R.
It’s always fun to compare knitting notes and this one will be no exception. Count me in; this will be fun!
Devon M
This is my first KAL and I am really excited about it! I am notorius for starting a project for myself and never finishing it! Hopefully this will motivate me to finish it! I only 22, stylish and love to knit but I have a hard time finding patterns that are something I would actually wear so I am really excited about this one! I really love this pattern and can’t wait to get my supplies and get going on it!
Jodie
Well, I’m still working on the last knit-along project, lol, but this one looks fun, too! She who dies with the most unfinished projects wins. 😉
Norma
I haven’t knitted anything in a long while so I am can’t wait to get started.
Jackie
I am not sure what level to call myself, I enjoy knitting and have done some harder than others, projects but I love the shrug and failed at one using really large yarn and needles. I look forward to following the KAL.
Kathleen
Beautiful pattern. I am anxious to try it–and finish a great gift for a special daughter. I need a new project, and this is just in time!
Borie
I bought the book a few months ago, but didn’t start anything yet.
I love shrugs, so this is an excellent chance for me to start this one and get some help, if needed.
Thanks for organizing this KAL.
su powell
Wow, great looking shrug
Donna
My first time as well. I’ll try to keep up! hahahaha
Was wondering if LB wool would do as a sub?
bethany link
too cute.. hope that i can catch up with ya..
Nita Stonehocker
This is my first Knit a long, the cable was too intimidating to attempt. But this is a beautiful shrug, I hope to be able to complete. What a wonderful free pattern to receive.
Thank you
Bev Adam
What a fun KAL, love the colour of the shrug in the picture, may have do one in something similar. Am joining the Ravelry group right now! (I have too many things on the needles – but what the hey!)
Laurel S
I just love Stephanie Japel’s stuff and I am intrigued by the KAL idea. Looking forward to it!
Kelley Hagemeister
This looks so cute! I can’t wait to get started!
Leigh
I really love this pattern, it is a beautiful shrug. Can’t wait to knit it!
Leslie
Hi, I would love to make this darling shrug with the KAL. I don’t know if I have the skills to do this, but am hoping with the online help from this blog that it will be possible. I recently learned to knit socks on my own by following a pattern and detailed instructions I got from the internet. This should be a lot of fun!
Pat LaPorte
What a lovely project! And just in time for Mother’s Day! Each year, I make a small something for each of my girls (daughters and daughter-in-law) for Mother’s Day. It’s my way of expressing my gratitude for my children, without whom I wouldn’t get to celebrate Mother’s Day in such a grand fashion. This beautiful sweater will be this year’s gift. Done for each in her favorite color, they are sure to be a valued addition to my girls’ wardrobes. Thank you. It’s perfect!
Maija
This’ll be my very first Knit-Along – I’m very exited!
Marcie
I am learning how to needle knit and it is a bit different from knitting looms and crochet. I am working on a Foulard Shawl right now and it is very interesting. I may have to fit needle knittng in with my other crafts just have to learn more about it.
I love loom a’ longs so this knit a long is great for me as I may learn something new.
Thanks for the chance.
Marcie
CiCi
I’ve never done a knit along, mostly because I am a very slow knitter, but will enjoy learning from those ahead of me.
Deborah Hansen
I love the color and shaping of this. Can’t wait to start!
Marta
I love a challenge and am looking forward to starting this project, my first shrug, my first knit-a-long. I have been knitting for many years and am always looking for something new. I thank you for this opportunity. I have never used the cotton-ease that many are saying is a good fibre. I may just use it because I am considering this for warm-weather wear.
Kay
I can’t wait to start. This is my first kal and am very excited to join. I will be able to dedicate some time to knitting and this will be the project I will work on.
Gayle
I’m very excited about this pattern. My daughter has been wanting a shrug and I just haven’t gotten around to it. This will be my catalyst. Thank you for the opportunity to do this in a community.
Marina
I am so excited to join this KAL! I have been wanting to make a shrug and this one looks great. I already bought my yarn, swatched, and even cast on. Can’t wait to read Stefanie’s posts.
Tammy
What a pretty shrug! I love Stephanie Japel patterns.
Nanzie
I’m thinking this will look great in pink and be just what I need to add to my wardrobe. I have only made myself two things to wear and haven’t felt overly pretty in either one. I hope that I will be pleased with this project. It’s so hard to know how something will look on myself until it is finished. Here’s hoping. Nanzie
Barbara
I’m looking forward to knitting this. Stefanie has beautiful patterns and I have her other book, Fitted Knits.
Margaret
Love it… can’t wait to start.
ashley
this looks like just what i need right now. i have been bored with the usual blankets and wraps. i have never been part of a knit along, so this will be fun for me to take part in. thanks! and i can’t wait for the next instalment. 🙂
Barbara
I love the elegant look of the shrug. I just started to knit in a big way. this will be my 1st KAL. Can’t wait
Teresa
Gorgeous shrug! Not sure if I’ve ever been so excited to wear a shrug! 🙂
Donna
I need a shrug, so this came at the perfect time–and a perfect excuse to stopy by the Studio and add to my stash; Just hoping I can keep up!
Jeanette
What a beautiful shrug!
Heather
My niece will love this. Can’t wait to start!!!
Bethany
I’ve never done a KAL, but this shrug SCREAMS my sister’s name! I now know what I’m giving her for Christmas this year! I’ve only attempted one piece of clothing before this – a sweater jacket that ended up a little too big. I usually knit scarves, hats, bags, wristers and dishcloths. I’m VERY excited to do this with guidance from all of you!
Karen
This looks great. What a beautiful pattern- and I just finished a Stefanie Japel design, so I’d love to do another!
Next stop is the LYS!
Lisa
I also am excited to try this shrug! This will be my first KAL and I am really looking forward to it!
Diana
What a great sweater — love the back interest, and the year-round potential for my climate.
Tricia
This is a beautiful pattern! Thanks for offering it and the knit-along. 🙂
Fay from California
I knit a shrug in a beautiful, jewel tone, light weight blue wool for my daughter when she was 24 and thought it looked too small, so I never put the pieces together. I was about to take it out and assemble it for the heck of it, when I saw the KAL designer pattern. Decided to make it for daughter’s 26th and hope the itty-bitty shrug will fit a future grandchild!
Andrea Sawyer
This is a great idea, I like the idea of a large knitting community getting together on line.
Michelle B.
Looking forward to this KAL. I found 40″ circular needles on ebay because I couldn’t find them at local stores.
Jean Layton
Love this shrug, finally one that covers all of your back. Can’t wait to cast on.
Rhonda
This is interesting. I’ve never participated in a knit along, but this sounds like fun!
zobagi
Hi, I’m Agnes from Budapest, Hungary and I’d like to participate. I have been knitting for years yet it will be my first KAL. The shrug is gorgeous, my sister will love to wear it. 🙂 I’d got just one obstacle: Lion Brand threads are not available in my country, which will force me to choose another brand for the project. Sadly.
Leslie
I really like the pattern you are shaing with us. I intend to try it but not right away. Keep up the good work
Kymme
Wow! This looks like great fun. I’m thinking Vanna’s choice in the eggplant. LOVE that color!
Kymme
Wow. I’m thinking of this in Vanna’s choice in Eggplant!
Debbie
This looks like fun.
Kabira
Very beautiful pattern!
Judy
Very excited to try this whole KAL thing! Especially for such a pretty project. I would say that I am an intermediate knitter. Can’t wait to get started.
Suzan
I am not such a great knitter. I would like to try this. I have problems with getting the right size. I hope to make this one fit.
I love the pattern.
I will look forward to the first post.
Debbie
Thanks for the great blog and chance to win. The shrug looks like something my daughter will love. Debbie
anna schneider
This is my first KAL. Hope I can keep up with two younguns running around!
Kim K
This is my first KAL. The shrug is absolutely gorgeous. I can’t wait to start. I have been crocheting since I was a child but just started knitting about a year ago. This will make a wonderful gift for my daughter’s birthday!
Laura
This is my first KAL! What a great project!
Donna Schulte
What a great idea. This is going to be fun.
Wendy Kranz
This project looks very interesting. I have been knitting and crocheting for many years. Haven’t had time the last few years, but this looks like an interesting project to get back into knitting. Winter is just about upon us here in Australia so a good time to start again.
Claire
This knit-along looks like fun! Gorgeous pattern! Plus what a great project to try out the LB Collection Organic Wool Yarn!
It looks like I am going to have to order my yarn online, so I may be a bit late getting started.
Renee
I too am a first time KAL-er, looking forward to it. It is a loveley pattern, I think I will do mine without the textured stripe pattern though. Good Luck everyone!!!
Margarita
I love this kniteraction (interaction)! We just lost another good yrn shop to the economy, so, when onc can share here it Great!
Thanks!
Tracy Bricchi
I am looking forward to getting started on this shrug. I have some cotton-ease in my stash that I bought for another project that I think I will use.
Andie
Hello,
This is such a cute piece. I have always done projects where gauge doesn’t matter as much, haven’t done any wearables. I learned to knit about 3 years ago, but really started plugging away at it to learn more and get past scarves since February, when I was recovering from surgery! I live in Texas, so light sweaters for the cold restraunts/offices are what works best, and this project seems to fit!
Sandra Dailey
I recently purchased a similar pattern. But this one looks like it might be more interesting and fun to make. With the longer 3/4 sleeve, it will serve as a nice jacket for spring and fall. I’m looking forward to making it.
Catherine
Very pretty pattern! I’d like to use a varigated yarn I have. Will that work?
Zontee says: Hi Catherine, it should work, but depending on the kind of variegation, you may get pooling or stripes (which you may or may not like depending on your tastes), so you may want to see if other people have made sweaters with your yarn to see if you like the effect.
Gaye
What a great pattern! I am SO looking forward to starting! I am also excited to be sharing my progress around the world. Thanks to everyone involved.
Jen
wow, what a great pattern! Very much looking forward to this KAL 😀
Diane
Love this shrug! I have some blue denim colored yarn that I’m gonna use. Can’t wait!! This is my first KAL.
Anna
I love the KAL and CAL. My skills are becoming better because I am using new stitches. Keep up the good work!!
Susan
This pattern looks like fun. Hard to decide what color to use. I like the roundness at the sides. Looking forward to seeing what different yarns we all use
Diane in Canada
Looking forward to this KAL. I’ve never followed through a blog before. Charming pattern.
Carrie
Can’t wait to get started. My first KAL project outside of a regular class and my first project completely for me. Most of my knitting is for my daughter and gifts.
Darlene Sanderson
This pattern looks really nice. I wish I was better at knitting!
Liz
Beautiful! I love the color!
Izzy
I shall certainly be joining in for this, it looks very stylish. Thanks for doing the KAL!
Lora Vander Hulst
Can’t wait to start this, thanks for letting me join in.
Karen Linnell
This is my first time to respond to KAL. I love this pattern. I am pretty much a crocheter
and haven’t knitted for quite awhile. After seeing
this pattern I am anxious to start KNITTING again!
Thanks for the inspiration.
Joanie
I have been looking for a good pattern for a shrug. You see them ever where.
Elizabeth H.
Looks like a great knit along.
Tara DiLenge
This shrug is beautiful! Can’t wait to try it! I am a bit nervous that it is ” intermediate” but I really like it so I will give it a shot!
Trish
I’ve been looking for a “shrug with attitude” pattern. Thank you so much for making this available!!
Janet
What a beautiful piece to start my first KAL! So excited to get started! I am an advanced beginner to intermediate from the Southeast.
Fern
What a thrill!! A world wide community KAL!!! From knitting for my daughters in the 70’s to my granddaughters, I’m sure it will be a thrill working with the designer of such a gorgeous “fitting” garment. I’m challenging each one in our group to take the plunge. This will be fun. Thank you.
Cheyenne
This pattern is so cute, I wish I had more time to knit it. I have too many projects on my needles that I have to finsh first.
Judy MCCaskill
This will be my first knit-along, although I read and followed along with the Tree-of-Life Afghan. Looking forward to this one!
Connie
great sweater in an awesome color!
Deborah
This maybe a duplicate, I am excited about joining this KAL, this is my first attempt at knitting a shrug so I may have questions. thanks
Betsy R
I am a midwife who crochets and knits. I usually take my current yarn project to my births. There’s something so relaxing about having a midwife in the corner, knitting…
This is my first time to join a KAL, and I look forward to it. I am an adventurous knitter, always looking for new things to try, so I am looking forward to this project, even though my husband always accuses me of finding projects for which I don’t have a needle or hook, so I have to buy a new one…and I will have to buy a new circ to complete this project.
I began crocheting when I was eight years old, and am self-taught. I loved to take a doily or shawl and figure out how it was made so that I could replicate it. I began knitting later, when I was an adolescent.
lindolyn
I am looking forward to knitting this, I am a intermediate knitter so this should be fun
Leah
I’m so exited since this is my first knit along. I’m a university student studying engineering, so knitting is how I relieve stress! I can’t wait to see the finished product.
Beverly Nulik
I knit for four daughters, four grandaughters, and five great grandchildren. I’m sure someone will want this shrug.
Loree
Sounds like fun to knit along with others. This shrug has beautiful details. I, too, need to be aware of the gauge as I always seems to get it too small.
Jacky Daniels
Gorgeous little top. Look forward to starting yet another superb KAL
Tobi
This is cute. I’ve knitted for years, but never did a KAL. If I can only finish some of my WIPs I might have to try it!
Cristina
It’s my first KAL too and I’m looking forward to trying to keep up and having a great shrug to show off!
Cindy
looking forward to the first KAL post!
Jan
Looks interesting to make as a gift. Look forward to the knit along. My first time.
mgiocond
Ya hooooo count me in. I just have to
make this for three of my teenage granddaughters. I know they will just love it.
This is my first KAL. I have all my supplies, downloaded the pattern, all set for tomorrow.
Good Luck and Happy Knitting to all who will be doing this Shrug.
Omayra
I am excited about this KAL. I have never even heard of KALs before but this sounds like an interesting way to connect with other knitters. Plus this shrug is very beautiful. I want to make this for a friend who is about to have a baby. Shrugs are great for expectant mothers b/c there are no buttons or closures involved 🙂
Charlotte
This will be the first clothing article I have knitted in about 25 years. I want to make it for my daughter who is allergic to wool and since we live in Gulf Coast Texas, I think the cotton-ease will be a much better choice for me. The pattern is beautiful and I am excited about making it.
Charlotte
vintagerockchick
JUST when I had vowed not to start anything else until I have finished (at least some of) my other projects!!
Linda Wenrick
Was glad to see that it is longer for us wider hip ladies. I can’t wait to try this. This is my first time trying you knit-along.
Ann
I have knitted for 4 years and just found your blog today.
It’s great.
Thanks.
~Ann
karisue
This is all new for me. I have years of life experience but not much with knitting and non with KAL. I am always looking for something chic that my new daughter might like. My son has added two treasures to our family and I want to make his wife something to celebrate her first Mother’s Day. Hoping she will dig it!
Marcie (with the flutes)
This will be my first KAL, but I love the look of the pattern and it looks like something I could wear! (LOL). I look foward to participating.
Linda
Newbie here and looking forward to following the KAL!!
Gloria
Looks really neat. I may be tempted to get some yarn and join in. I’m always looking for something to put over my shoulders.
Sheryl
Hi,
I just started to knit and love it. It is one of the things I can do to relax me. I never done a knit along but looking forward to start and make this beautiful sweater.
K Low
What a great project! Not sure I can join this time, but love the pattern.
Sherry
I’m such a slow knitter that I don’t know if I can keep up with you. I may give it a try anyway.
laura l
WOW, this could really get me going. I have high hopes of progressing my knitting skills. It should be fun!
Barb Johnson
This will be my first KAL. I have some beautiful heathered wool that I bought ages ago that I plan to use for this project. How long is “ages”? So long that no one at Lion Brand even remembers making it!
Dominique
Oh! this looks like fun! I can’t wait to start! It’s the first thing I will knit that I can actally wear!, and my first KAL!. I live in Ecuador and this is a great experience!!
Kathie
This will be my first KAL too, and I am glad you suggested other yarns to use. I am very allergic to wool, will the look be much different? This looks so classy. This will be for my best friend leaving on a long cruise this fall and thought this might be just what she needs.
Zontee says: Hi Kathie, the general look of the garment will be the same, but as with any case where you substitute the yarn, it will not look exactly like the garment shown.
Audrey
This is my first KAL – looking forward to it!
karen dewilllers
The KAL idea is super cool. I am worried it will make me look too ‘fat’ but I’m willing to give it a chance.
And this will be the first sweater I make for myself.
Judy
Beautiful shrug. Thanks for sharing the pattern with us. I am going to make it for my sister.
Grace
Even though I have been knitting for a long time I always seem to get bogged down on one point or other in a knitting project. Now, I see there will be a lot of support and so many people who will be there to “help” anwer questions. Can’t wait to begin.
Jenny
I’ve been knitting for about a year now, this will be my first KAL. I’m so excited to work on this beautiful pattern!
Gail Lush
This is my first knit along. I have tested my gauge for this fabulous shrug and can not seem to get it right. I am using a yarn that is 4 (medium) 100% acryllic and find that the width is correct at 4 inches, but the length is too short at 3 1/2 inches. I tried going up a half size with needles, but this just makes the width too big and the length still too short. I’m not an experienced knitter, so perhaps I have misunderstood how to check for gauge. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am looking forward to knitting this shrug. The pattern is beautiful. Thanks for posting it.
Zontee says: Hi Gail, generally speaking the gauge for width is more important than the gauge for length, as most patterns (including this one) gives you a length to which to knit until. Because you’re getting a shorter gauge, it may take you more rows than someone else to get to that length, but you’ll get there.
Susan
I have been knitting for over 40 years and have never made anything like this before nor have I participated in any sort of group. This should be fun!
Trish
Interesting.
DEENA
LOOKING FORWARD TO STARTING THIS PROJECT..ALWAYS WANTED A SHRUG!!
I will also try to make one for my daughter who turned 19 y/o today!!
Linda M.
It’s a beautiful design. Great for an evening cover-up this summer.
Linda M.
Karen
What fun! I can’t wait to get started! 🙂 Going to get my needles warmed up, not that they ever get cold! 🙂
lou
hi:
I’m new to this but would like to knit along.
Rita
This sounds like fun.
Jamie
Since Im allergic to wool and get all hivy from it. I’ve decided to make this with the lovely and soft Moonlight mohair from Lion in the rainforest color. I just recently scored a bunch at a killer price, and I think it will make it even more glamorous. I might even have enough to make a matching evening bag!
Dani
This looks like a great easy pattern. I can’t wait to give it a try with my newly aquired knitting skills. I started taking knitting lessons so I could knit with my mother and I am finding I may enjoy it more than crocheting. Looking forward to this garment.
Lucinda
What a beautiful project. I have been knitting felted hats for 3 years which required my learning to use circular needles. Thanks for the opportunity to KAL something spectacular.
Holly
Looks beautiful, I better get digging in my stash if I want to do this knit-along. Looks like a lot of ribbing. I see why fit snug and flexi.
Connie
This looks so nice. Can’t wait to try the pattern. Thanks
Pamela
This will be my first knit along. I have been knitting for over 40 years and it always excites me when I see the different variations on patterns from yester-years. What is so lovely about this pattern is the fitted look at the waist and the creative neckline. I am looking forward to knitting this pattern and reading all the comments posted on this site.
I knit or crochet most days – for family, friends or charities – in the car, on the bus, camping, travelling or watching TV. For me it is very relaxing and everyone loves to get something homemade – it is a gift of made with love and greatly appreciated. Time to get ready for the hockey game . . . Go Canucks Go!
Riki
Lovely pattern – my sister got me some yarn to make her something but didn’t specify WHAT! and I think this will be perfect! Thanks for the KAL, I love them! Living in Bangkok it is pretty hard to find knitting friends to compare notes with (though fluent in Thai I don’t have the knitting terms down and they mostly crochet here).
Helen Spencer
I wasn’t planning on knitting this garment until I saw the closeup and the wonderful detail. Raglans are my favorite style. So, I’m sold, but plan to use Lion’s Woolease for my yarn of choice.
marilyn holter
Hey there, first time for group knitting as this although have taught knitting. The pattern looks beautiful and cannot wait. May I substitute yarn as wool I have difficulty with.
Blessings, marilyn
Zontee says: Hi Marilyn, please see my response to Lindsay’s question (#47) for non-wool recommendations.
Marina Stefanovic
I was just looking for a shrug pattern, how fun!
Debra Agostino
This is a beautiful design. I can’t wait to start my first wearable garment and my first knit along..
Trysha
I am looking forward to wearing this great poetic piece! Great choice!
Kathryn
This looks great for the summer can’t wait to get started.
kathryn
Terri
this is my first KAL also…have knitted lots of scarves, socks, hats and baby sweaters but never a wearable for myself! Looking forward to it!
Rachel
I am so excited about this KAL!! I have never participated in one before but can’t wait to get started! It will be so wonderful to be able to talk to other people and get help when needed!! This shrug is so cute!
Peggy
This is really nice. I think I’m in. Thanks.
Laurinda
Thank you for the opportunity to learn and get help on this great pattern!
marivan
oiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
i kiniting, but dont inglish…rs
Debbie Smith
I can’t wait to try this. Looking forward to seeing how this will come out.
Arlo-Ann Hobbs
This will be my first KAL and I’m excited about the pattern. I belong to a Prayer Shawl Ministry and most of my knitting has consisted of Shawls and Chemo Caps, the last two years.
Arlo-Ann
Liz
an’t wait to begin!
Renata Hazelman
I’m so excited – I love Stephanie Japel’s designs – very sexy and delicate!
Yay!!
Mary
Great sweater. I love the design and need a new project. I can’t wait to start. I’ll be knitting along and waiting to see the progress! Enjoy-I know I will!
Raine
Hi Raine here from NW wisconsin.
This is an awesome pattern that I am very interested in making for my daughter! She would wear it well! Her birthday is in August so if I can get some money together I am going to see if I can get it together for her 13th birthday. This is somewhat of a challenge because I have only been knitting for less then a year but I have made LOTS of items for various charities as well as many gifts! Thanks for the inspiration!
Susan Levine
I downloaded the pattern over the weekend and bought the yarn today. I can’t wait to start it. My daughter loves shrugs and I know she’ll be wild about this one!
Kathi
Greetings from KCK. School’s almost out and I’m ready for a new project! Way cool pattern, can’t wait to get started.
Jennifer L.
Love the pattern – just moved it to the beginning of my knitting queue!
Annette Boersma
This looks like fun. Do you think it can be done with basic beginner skills?
Zontee says: Hi Annette, please see my response to Lisa’s question (#283).
Haley
I’ve never done a KAL before, but this looks like a fun pattern. I might just have to join in. Thanks for sharing your pattern with us for free.
Jeanie
Hello to all my companion knitters.
I am a novice to knitting, but I love a challenge. This pattern really provides a good incentive.
I appreciate the opportunity to reach out for assistance. I will certainly need it!
Jeanie
Dianna
This looks really cute and I’ll try to keep up. Thanks for sharing the pattern.
Alison
I’ve never done a knit along; this will be my first!
DH (California)
I’m definitely in! Off to download the pattern!
Kay
Awesome pattern. Thanks for sharing the pattern. I’m doing one for my granddaughter.
Katie
This looks like it will be so much fun! But I’m worried about keeping up. I work full time and go to school full time. How quickly will the shrug be done? Do I have to do a certain amount each week?
Zontee says: Hi Katie, as I said in this introductory post, you can work at your own pace — there’s no “deadline.” We’ll be working on it for 6 weeks, but the blog posts stay up, so you can always put it down and come back to it as needed.
Lori Kay
I think I’ll try this one!
Darlene
I was so excited to see this as a KAL…I have wanted to knit this for a while and now I have the incentive and the help to get started on it!
This Thursday is my 45th B’DAy and I think this would be a nice gift to me!
Tammy Parsons
I am very excied about this. I am just learning to knit so cant wait to get started
Bevsyarncrazy
Hi, I’m Beverly from Maine. I love the look of this pattern and look forward to working on it with all of you. Thank you for making it available and in such a wide range of sizes.
I have been knitting for seven years now. I also crochet and spin yarn.
Denise M
I love this pattern! I think I would prefer a lighter weight yarn – I wonder how it would look in the recycled cotton? Sand or sea shells. I have been looking for a shrug pattern that doesn’t look like it was designed for a 12 year old, and I think this one might be it. I can’t wait to start!
Donna
This is sooo cute. I tried to design a shrug and it just did not have proper proportion. I am so excited to see that this is designed in larger sizes, as soooo many patterns out there are only shown in smaller sizes. Looking forward to creating it ! ! !
Lea Ogozelec
I’m in…but, I live in Roswell, GA, just above Hotlanta, so I will be doing it in Cotton-Ease as suggested above. I used to teach knitting for Phildar years ago, but recently found the Lion brand site and have been knitting like crazy lately…2 baby sweaters and a baby blanket in the last three weeks!
Judy
This is a beautiful sweater- mind you everything in that book is just amazing! Thanks for sharing. Mom and i are sharing the book and she is going first so this way we can go at the same time 🙂
Judy
This is one of the best looking little sweaters that I’ve ever seen. Can’t wait to get started on it.
Aine
Love it! Excellent choice for a knitalong.
Carmen
This looks like such an irresistable pattern. I have trouble finishing articles of clothing, so maybe this is the inspiration I need.
Cynthia Stevenson
What an incredibly neat idea…a Knit-a-long. The pattern looks fun and I want to give it a try. I look forward to doing this but I must admit I knit so very slowly that I’ll be the last one done. A quick intro…I’ve been a knitter for 51 years, crocheter for 30 and tatter for 25. I love to keep my hands busy. I have a business website (I did not list it as I do not abuse my handwork friends with business) but for my handwork a blog and it is mostly tatting. Peace, Cynthia
Tammy
Love her website! Looks like a nice pattern. I’m a novice knitter so it would be a first for me. T
colourmyworld
My first KAL too and I can’t wait to learn more about top down raglan. I wouldn’t have the confidence to lauch into something like this otherwise.
Andrea
What a wonderful shrug to expand my knitting abilities. I can’t wait to join in!!
Joy
I’m a beginning knitter, but thought I might be able to keep up with this challenging pattern if I knit-along! It’s so gorgeous I couldn’t resist! Away we go…..
Jacly
Beautiful shrug! I am going to love knitting this one. Can’t wait!
Betty Bredemeier
I’m in too! I’ve never done a KAL and it looks fun. I love the pattern. Thanks
I’m excited to do the KAL. Thanks for the cute pattern!

Jerrie
Got my yarn–can’t wait to start! I love Stefanie’s designs!
Janet Moran
Just what I am looking for – can’t wait to get started.
Linda Carroll
HI! Linda here in albuquerque, been kniting for oooo lotsa years, machine knit also. this adventure looks just great fun. Nice meating all of you.
Ann Bento
I’m an avid sock knitter. Seeing this pattern, I’d like to take a break from socks and give this a try. I love knitting textures, and this pattern looks interesting. I especially like the idea of minimal seaming to finish. This will be my first KAL, I’m looking forward to it!
mavis
have never done a knit along before. this looks like a great pattern to start with.
Debbie
Love this shrug. Bought my yarn and got started. The yarn is knitting up beautifully. Can’t wait to hear everyone’s comments as they get started!!
Mary
I’ve never done a KAL but this is the exact pattern I think I need to have. I’m going to give it a try, wish me luck!
carol
Such a cute pattern!! It will be interesting to read the designer’s comments.
Rachel Armstrong
I just might join in on the fun!!!
Lillie
This pattern has the sophistication missing in most shrugs, which makes it very appealing. Of course, the more intricate pattern also makes it a little more challenging, no doubt, so I’m a little nervous. But, hey, nothing ventured nothing gained, right? Let’s get started!
Luci
I think I’ll give it a try
Denise H.
This will be my first knit along! It’s almost like going to knitting group.
Nina Knox
I’m going to try this. I knit and quilt. I have a couple of baby things I’m knitting right now for upcoming grandchild due June 8. But I’m very interested, so I’ll follow up on Thursday!
Jo Rave
I have just learned what KAL is~ what a fun way to learn together.
Simone
a wonderful challenge for a newbie!
goseigirl
I’m craving a spring knitting project and am thrilled to join the knit-along. This sweater pattern is perfect for me. It’s fitted and won’t swim on my petite figure. I can’t wait to buy my yarn and get started.
Jennifer
What a gorgeous shrug! I’ve browsed through the author’s other book “Fitted knits” and can’t wait until I’m experienced enough to make one of her patterns (only been knitting/crocheting for about 6 months). In the meantime, I only have ~8 days to finish the winter lace afghan that I’m making for my brother and his bride as a wedding gift 🙂
Randi
This looks like fun (and a challenge)- thank you!
heather
I can’t wait to get started. I’ve knitted a few simple things but feel I need to challenge myself. I’ve never knitted anything with a pattern but I think I will be able to get it. 🙂
Ticia
Can’t wait to try it – the pattern is beautiful!
Terri
This sounds fun..count me in!
Jennifer W
I love the pattern and can’t wait to get started. I had started the last KAL but ended up knitting a very complicated cable sweater for my husband for Christmas and by the time that was finished the KAL had ended. 🙁 I’m going yarn shopping tomorrow and will make this up for my daughter or granddaughter for Christmas.
Many thanks for the pattern.
Laurinda
I would love to win the book, for when my skills are a little better (I’ve only been knitting since February)!
Ruby White
I have not knitted for a long time, but this looks like a great shrug pattern I am going to give it a try.
Rebecca
Yippee, skippee! I saw a circle shrug pattern somewhere else just the other day & rejected it as “nice, but I don’t understand the pattern”. Well, is today my lucky day, or what? I’m just in time, & probably have the materials somwhere in my vast stash (blush – it’s been neglected of late!). Thanks for making my day! Oh, I’m also new to KAL’s. Really, all I have to do is log on & follow the bouncing, ah, needle? That’s it? I’m open 2 new stuff! I’ll be there!
Zontee says: Hi Rebecca, just come back to blog.lionbrand.com on Thursdays to see new posts, or anytime by clicking “knit-along” under the “Categories” heading on the right-hand bar of the blog to see all posts related to knit-alongs. Comment on new posts when you want to, or just read and work along.
Chris Kreglow
Wow! This will be my first KAL and what a way to begin. I hope I can keep up with this. Thank you for providing the pattern. I need all the help I can get.
Chris
Roxanne
Let’s not shrug this one off. We need to jump into this one and join in. What fun!!! How can we lose when we have so many wonderful ladies willing to share and show the results of this wonderful pattern.
Whoopppee!!!
Don’t we love Lion’s Brand yarn and Stefanie’s Glam Knits pattern? Thanks to them both for sharing.
Hugs,
Roxanne
Darlene
I am new to KALs and this pattern looks like a fun challege. I consider myself to be an intermediate to advanced (not expert) knitter. I like designing my own patterns but this pattern intrigues me enough to try it. I look forward trying this venue and meeting some new people.
Kathryn Morris
I am saving a copy of this pattern for future use. I can see one of my nieces wearing this shrug.
I have baby things to work on for a grandbaby, so can’t participate in the knit along at this time.
Deb
This looks like a fun project. I have recently started to branch out from “flat knitting” (scarves and shawls)to more challenging items like socks and a tank top for summer. I have never done a KAL before and amlookin forward to it.
Yulia
This is a very pretty shrug. Very interesting design!
Susan K.
Sounds like a lot of fun… and maybe doing a KAL will keep me focused to get it done in a reasonable amount of time!! (there are a lot of WIP’s in my knitting bag!!!)
Knitting Nana
This may be the first KAL I do at the right time. I have made the Twisted Trees Afghan and the Cable Luxe Tunic, but both times had other more pressing projects to finish, so got to them after the KAL ended. One advantage to that was being able to read the posts and avoid mistakes or problems others had. Right now I have one child’s sweater to finish, and that will be done within a week or so, and then on to the KAL>
Sherry Anderson
Love this pattern! I may just have to knit this along with you!
Tiffany
This is such a beautiful piece! It is both retro and updated (does that make sense?). I love the avocado color that Stefanie chose and I am excited to work on this piece with people from all over! 🙂
Sandy Knight
I am really looking forward to participating in this KAL – awesome!!!
Beth
I have been wanting a nice shrug for some time and considered asking a talented friend to make one for me. When I saw this pattern, I knew I wanted to try it myself! This will be my best chance at getting it done. I have minimal experience in both knit and crochet (mostly beginner or easy stuff), but love doing both while making articles for a charity group and nursing home residents. I never seem to keep anything for “me” so now I will try this KAL and see if I can keep the shrug as my personal TLC hug.
Karen
This is my first KAL. I’m excited to get started on such a gorgeous piece,
Sarah
This looks like an awesome KAL! I’d love to participate now, but I don’t have a yarn that would work for this in my stash, and I don’t have the money to afford more yarn right now. Ah well, I’ll definitely have to try out the pattern once I can buy more yarn!
Kathy M.
What a beautiful sweater! I’m starting to knit again after a 30 year break. What fun to do it with other knitters!
Verlee
Like many others I have a number of WIP’s but this is such a beautiful pattern I will just have to have another! This will also be my first knit along and hopefully I can keep up.
Katia Colavito
I live in Indianapolis and have never done a KAL. I LOVE the sweater and hope it is not too difficult for me. I am a new knitter and sometimes I am plain old dense..when it comes to instructions and have to be shown the way. I love Stefanie’s sweaters from perusing the book.
Happy Knitting.
Kathryn B.
Looking forward to my first KAL. Will be using Cotton-Ease. I’ve used it for numerous other projects and just love it. Can’t wait to begin a project for myself!
Kristina
I am looking forward to working on KAL with one of Stephanie Japel’s beautiful patterns.
Julie Boydell
I love the high neck and long length from the back; I hate cold draughts! We’re just coming into the cold season in Australia, so this looks like the perfect first project of the season. I hope I can keep up 🙂
Angela
What a great pattern! This is my first KAL too. 🙂 It’s probably the most challenging pattern I’ve decided to try to-date. Perfect!
Marie
This is my first knit-along and I am very excited. I hope this is the first of many knit-alongs for me. Thanks for sharing the pattern.
Rhonda
I just opened the email about this KAL, and I’m looking forward to two firsts – my first KAL, and my first ever SHRUG!! I’ve wanted to knit one for a long time, but just never got around to it. Now I have a good incentive to get going, plus, I love the pattern. Thanks so much.
Rhonda
Rhonda
Oh my goodness, I just looked at the time! And I wanted to get started knitting this gorgeous shrug right away…guess that will have to wait til I get a little sleep…good morning all 🙂
Christina
This is my first KAL. I learned to knit because I can’t always find sweaters that fit. Now I have problems finding fashionable patterns in my size. I’m glad this pattern comes in larger sizes and is slightly longer than most shrugs. I am also interested in yarn alternatives since I am allergic to wool.
Debbie
I am so excited! I have never participated in anything like this and it sounds like so much fun! I am homebound and my girlfriend just brought me a ton of yarn! It was her mothers and she had passed away and I was looking for something to make for her as a kind of thank you for this wonderful gift! She will look so adorable in it. I could never afford to buy such a pattern and it has been years since I have done anything this intricate! I read about the book and the author. I would really like to have this book! I have plenty of yarn to use now! It’s all Lion Brand! Please consider me for this book. Thanks, Debbie
Sanju
This is my first KAL and yes I am excited. I am just wondering whether I will be able to finish it before I grow in size 🙂 But I will give it a try and definitely my best try.
Merrylee
wow, this is a beautiful pattern, I can’t wait to get started!
Katie
Ooh looks like fun! I’m not sure if mine will turn out as well as others but it sounds good.
Mette
This is my first KAL and I cannot wait!!!!
Helen Ho
I had not join the last KAL in December/January, I would do it this time because of the fabulous choice of Textured Circle Shrug. Trust that it would be fun with so many people doing the same thing and am sure that I would improve my knitting skills from this project as I have not tried a “raglan from the top down” yet.
Thank you Lion Brand for organizing this kind of exercise.
Cheers!
Martina
What a beautiful pattern – and a great yarn! The only thing I´m not sure about: Which color should I choose?
Rubie
What a perfect combination! Japel and LBY. I was debating buying Glam Knits because I knew once I owned it I would want to spend way too much on yarn. This way I can stay in budget by using woolease and having the author guide us through the conversion and any other problems that mioght pop up. Thanks to all involved.
Aisha
Hi my name is Aisha, not sure yet if I will join in as I am still fairly new and not confident enough to join in, but will def be back to look again
AmyD
I’ve never tried a shrug nor a KAL, this sounds like fun!! I’m excited to get started!!!
Brendalee
This is really my first time ever joining a KAL on this website. I really love this website, especially Lola cartoon. Well off to download the pattern and supplies. Hopefully I will have access to good yarn, being that I’m in Egypt. Thanks.
Erica
Okay, you got me. I’ve never done a KAL before, but this is it–I can’t resist!
Carol Freeman
My first KAL … and a little more ambitious than the hat and clutch I’ve tried. We shall see. Off to the store this weekend to get my yarn!
Vanessa
Thanks Stephanie , what an awesome pattern , of course all your designs are fantastic.
Cannot wait.

I’ve never participated in one either – but this looks like fun and that shrug will be a great gift for my daughter!! Beautiful!
Sandi
I am so excited to knit something along with a group. I live in a fairly small town in Michigan, and there are no knittng clubs in the area. I have wanted/needed a shrug for a while and this is a great opportunity to treat myself with my knitting for a change.
marie sierra
i am looking forward to this fun and challenging project! thank you lion brand! i hope to make this for my dear sister
Karen
This is an amazing project and I can’t wait to
start it–it really caught my eye!
Sue
I think I’ll make this for my college-bound daughter!
Amy Ross
This shrug is beautiful and I just can’t resist trying it!
Susan Geiger
This looks like fun. I have never done this before but i am going to give it a go. I was wondering if I can substitute organic cotton to make it a little cooler for summer..
Vicki
This is a great pattern, I can’t wait to get my materials and get started.
shelly
I will definitely try this KAL- I love shrugs, I love the fact they’re just enough coverage to keep the chills off, but do not keep you too warm. This pattern is so versatile, casual and glam.
I’m not really great at keeping my gauge, but I’m going to try my hardest to stick with it.
I will go look for my yarn today. Can’t wait for the first post.
Barbara
Pattern looks so nice with collar compaedt to another shrug I have done, this is classy. Looking forward to making it an FO.
Kitty J
I love this pattern. My daughter and I just started Stephanie’s turtleneck tube vest. I would love to make this for my daughter and grandaughter to wear while in Greece, they are going in June.
roxana
Once there was a time I was knitting every day. For some time this became almost impossible and last couple of things I knitted took me more than one year to complete.
I always wished to knit a shrug and I want to try the Knit Along for the first time.
mollie
Looking forward to this – what a fun activity!
Carol
I am brand new at reading your blog. I’m very excited about getting started.
dani hartvigsen
I had a question on post #739 that hasn’t been answered. Maybe it was just missed?
But my next question is: If my sample swatch is right on on the width, but I had to knit 30 rows to equal 4″, what do I do? Also, if I didn’t use stockinette stitch in my sample, do I do my sample over with the stock, rev. stock., and then I should be on?
Zontee says: Hi Dani, if you go back to your first comment, you’ll see my answer.
As for your new question, please see my response to Gail’s question (#903).
Mary
A great pattern! If I want to substitute yarn, what is the best way to determine the correct quantity to purchase — number of yards or total weight of yarn?
Zontee says: Hi Mary, please see my response to Susan’s question (#535).
Christin
I’m a big fan of Japel’s work…no boring or frumpy there! I’m so looking forward to this project! Even my two-year-old is enthused about going to “the yarn store!” & who couldn’t use another shrug 😉
Debora
These KALs and CALs sure help motivate and create community. This will be my first “big” sweater. i have made a couple of baby sweaters — one crocheted, one knit — but this will be exciting! Thanks, Stefanie and Lionbrand Yarns!
Sandy
The pattern looks like fun….
I’m going to need an extra set of hands to keep up with all the knitting I want to do… and another house for my stash of yarn…
Eileen
Lovely design.
Heather Azzarello
I can’t wait to get started, I just need to pick a color from the great choices!
Veronica Brooks
Like so many others who have posted, this will be my first KAL. Can’t wait! I am having knee surgery soon and this will help me get through the recovery without going stir crazy. Can’t wait to go pick up the yarn. Knit on folks!
Chris
This is the first KAL for me too; the pattern is lovely – I can’t wait to get started!
KAY
Still working on the CAL, but I might try this. Not as good a knitter as a crocheter but I love texture.
Jean
Looks beautiful – I am new to knitting and trying to teach myself as a way of relaxing.
vivienne
thank you very much for the beautiful pattern, I feel very fortunate to be able to have this pattern, it’s exactly the type of knitting garment that I’ve been looking for, both the colour and fit are just superb. Thank you!
I’ve been reading through the pattern in preparation to begin knitting but don’t quite understand the instruction “work 1 row even”, what does “even” mean? I have a very good understanding of knitting techniques and have done a lot of knitting over the years and just can’t wait to start on this. Thank you once again!
Zontee says: Hi Vivienne, “work 1 row even” means to work the row you are now facing as either an entire knit row as an entire purl row, depending on what the last row looks like. If the last row looks all like Vs facing you, knit this row. If the last row looks like little bumps facing you, purl the row.
Laurie
Have never done a KAL…hope I can keep up. Semi-beginner so some of the terminology may throw me for a loop but I know this group will help me through. Can’t wait!!
Pamela
Looks really good! Hope I can keep up the pace!
Pam Volzone
In concordance with Beth Kay’s post above, I would also appreciate some suggestions for non-wool organic substitutions for this adorable shrug. I do see some mentions of other knitters using Cotton-Ease, so I will start a gauge piece using this, but any other suggestions are welcome. A silk blend would be very elegant – but I just have so little time to shop. Thanks.
Zontee says: Hi Pam, I responded to Beth’s question. Click here to read it.
Marla
Great shrug. Looks fun to knit!
Marla
Great shrug! Looks fun to knit!
Eileen
I love this shrug! I downloaded it last week and put it in my pile of “To-Knit” patterns. I love the patern, but will knit it in another color. My first KAL too!! Hopefully I can participate!
Nancy Sebesta
When I opened my Lion Brand newsletter and I saw this pattern, I immediately printed it out to begin when I finish my Wallaby sweater (by Carol Anderson of Cottage Creations). However, I may begin knitting this now and along with the group as I desire it so much! Such great style for us “peasant stock” built ladies and beautiful color yarn that I can hardly wait until work is done and I can go purchase my supplies. Good thing my Wallaby is almost done and school activities are completed so I can knit on this!
Tracie
I participated in the last KAL and it was extremely helpful. I cannot wait to start this one!
Bethany
I have Fitted Knits and Glam knits is on my wish list. I’m going yarn shopping for this baby today. This will be my first KAL. Woot!
Channon
Great KAL! I’ve downloaded the pattern and can’t wait to pick a yarn and cast on.
Pat
This is a beautiful pattern and look forward to learning new stitches and participating in this my first KAL.
Laura
I am going to try to make two. One in cotton-ease and one in Vanna’s choice. Ordered some yarn last night and going to buy the rest today so I can get started. Can’t wait!
Rachel
I love this. I have been scouring the stores to find a cute shrug to no avail. I can’t wait to get started on this KAL!
Maryann
Love the shrug! Ideal for us Florida knitters. I have been a beginner/intermediate knitter for far too long. Made miles of flat work, scarfs, baby blankets etc. and truckloads of hats on circular needles — but never anything with sleeves. This is my chance to soar to the next level with the support of fellow yarn lovers. Thank you for such a practical and elegant project. Will take the earlier suggestion of Cotton Ease yarn.
TWO STICKS STRING = BEAUTIFUL THINGS
kristalg
I’m excited to try this new KAL. Never done one before, but this shrug is so cute!
Teri Farb
Can’t wait to start!
sarahbeth
This looks exciting. I think the yarn for this will count as part of my Mother’s Day gift!
Karen Hughes
This is my first knit-along. I hope my knitting is up to it. Thanks for sharing the pattern.
Cherry
This shrug looks perfect to make as a suprise gift for my sister who has lost 100 lbs this last 2 years! Now she has the glam figure to wear it! Can’t use wool though, so I may switch to cotton-ease like Laura. Love it! Looking forward to starting!
amelia
ooh… i wanna knit too! If I can find the time for this one with all the other ones… let’s do it!
Kathy M
This sounds like fun and the sweater looks cute!
Donna
This is one pretty shrug! Cannot wait to knit!
Debbie B
I’ve been a fan of Lion Brand products and your extensive pattern library for quite some time. It’s great that you’ve gone outside your own patterns to someone else’s for this KAL!
Patricia G.
What a great pattern you will be teaching! It will be my first try at something other than a scarf. What do you think of adding beads to my yarn around the end of the sleeve and around the neck and front edges?
I have some yarn from our alpacas that is lace weight that I might double to get the right thickness, but still remain light. I am so excited to start!
Zontee says: Hi Patricia, adding beads sounds great! Hope you’ll share your photos when you’re done with us. Don’t forget that two strands of category #1 (lace weight) yarn is only equal to one strand of category #2 yarn. The recommended LB Collection Organic Wool is a category #4 (medium) yarn, so you may need more strands to get the desired thickness. Make sure you’re on gauge before you start.
Sherry
Great construction – looks complicated and tailored, but it’s actually quite simple.
Cara
Fantastic! I’m a big fan of Stefanie’s designs and can’t wait to start this one!
Thanks!
Elaine Hodges
I’m already working on Fitted Knits; really glad to see this book come out. Thanks!
Joe
This is a lovely pattern! 🙂
Sharon H
Glad to see the extended range of sizes, and the extra length.
Jill Morrison
This will be the first piece that I knit that is not a child’s piece or a scarf..I am so excited! And I am finally making something for myself!
Alethea Bushaw
I also have restarted knitting after a long while. Our ladies group at church has been knitting Chemo hats for cancer patients. I would like to try another pattern, perferable one I can wear. I did make a pair of the Tube Socks. They turned out fine, so here I am. I’m sure I will have questions so glad you all are here. I look forward to joining the KAL group as I have never done anything like this before. Can’t wait to get those needles clicking….alethea
Irma Pryor
This circle Shrug will be my first ever knit along. I plan to use cotton yarn for this project in order to be able to ware it this spring and summer. So I am very excited to start I will be picking up the yarn this weekend.
“I can’t wait to participate.â€
Reggie
This will be my first KAL. I usually make only small projects because I have trouble actually finishing bigger ones (get sidetracked to something else), but this is so nice….
Jamie
cute little thing. Might try it, as I have hard time getting to friends’ houses for similar deal, just too darn busy these days
Does Lion Brand Yarn have a FB account?
Zontee says: Hi Jamie, we don’t at this time, but we hope to have one very soon!
D Padgett
Ok, I’m in! I feel more comfortable crocheting, especially after finishing my sister’s monster sweater! But this is too cute not to try! Knowing I can ask questions will really help! KAL here I come!
Doris Boon
Last Christmas younger daughter received a ski-type honeycomb pattern pullover. I’m just finishing a cardigan for our older daughter which is a raglan twist cable type and have asked and our daughter-in-law and she accepted for me to knit her gift this year, type to be decided. After seeing this new shrug, I just hope I can fit in a surprise for the pullover daughter as it is perfect for her. She is laid-back and wouldn’t mind receiving the present with needles attached.
Leisa
One of the prettiest shrugs I’ve seen. Love the color.
jacque
This will be my first knit along, too. Can’t wait to get started. This little shrug will be perfect for those days when the office feels below freezing!
susan
This is a pretty shrug. I’m not sure about making it in wool. Could an acrylic, cotton, silk or blend be substituted?
Zontee says: Hi Susan, see my response to Lindsey’s question (#47).
Kelli
I can’t remember if I ever commented that I’m in or just said it out loud! 🙂 But I am definitely in on this one. It will be my first knit-along (I’m very new at this) and my first “garment” piece, I’ve only done scarves and blankets so far…wish me luck!!!! Oh, and thanks again for hosting it!
Jo-Ann
I am excited about this KAL. Beautiful shrug. Hope I can keep up.
Claire C
this is so cute i cant wait to start 🙂
Nieves
This is a very nice pattern and I love the fact that it’s given in a range of sizes. I love the color as well, but as I’m allergic to wool, I hope I can find it in cotton.
I’ll probably make several – for me, my 2 teen nieces and my daughter (though in my daughter’s case it would probably be a full sweater, unless I can get tips to make it in extra small)
Sarah K.
Yay! This pattern looks really cute, can’t wait to start on it! This will be my first knit along, and I’m excited to see how it goes!
Robin Zalob
I can’t wait to participate in another KAL!!!!! Please keep them coming. It has certainly helped my knitting and crocheting to improve.
Rebecca
I have not done a knit along, but this one sounds like fun. Since school is almost out, the timing is perfect. Thanks.
Karen Thomas
I’ve been looking for a new project and this will be my first KAL! I’m going shopping this afternoon and can’t wait to get started. This will be a bit of a challenge for me but I’m game!
Karen
Noris B.
This is my first knit along project, can’t wait to start it.
Tina Carone
This looks like lots of fun! I usually do sock KAL’s but think I may try this one just for a change.
Carol
I live in Tyler, Texas and I am going to challenge myself with this project! No more hats, shawls, or scarves! Time to graduate to something more challenging and this beautiful shrug is just the ticket. Many heartfelt thanks to the author for including us Goddess-sized ladies out there who are 2x-3x. We love to look beautiful too!
As for the yarn, since it gets very hot here and I would like to wear this over sleeveless attire for a dressier look, I am going to try this pattern using Cotton-Ease as suggested.
This will be fun and informative!
Ruth
I have GlamKnits and have planned some day to knit the shrug, so I am very excited that it was chosen for the KAL. I love to knit with people and always need help so this is ideal.
Sondra Farrell
LOVE IT!!!!!looking forward to trying this..this will be my first KAL…and first intermediate item in a while…got away from knitting..just gotten back into it recently..I think I am up for the challenge..thanks for the pattern and fun.
Amber
Can’t wait to start this KAL it will be my first one through Lion Brand. Looks like fun.
Jerri
Have just downloaded the pattern and am picking up the yarn this weekend, can’t wait to get started. This will be a stretch for me, I don’t consider myself an intermediate knitter. This will be a good challenge.
Irene
I love shrugs & this is a most beautiful pattern to work on!!!
Theresa Brown
This looks like a fun project and I’m going to try really, really hard to finish it! Thanks for a cute design.
Kelly
I am SO excited this is my first KAL!
Sharon
What is the purpose of a shrug? I had a grandmother who wore them, and she let me borrow one sometimes. I could never get warm when wearing one. If my back is cold, then my front is cold, too.
Mickie
This is my first kal. Guess I need to go get supplies. Shrugs are so cool.
Cindy
I love this pattern! Hopefully the KAL will keep me on track and prevent another UFO from forming! This is my first KAL so I hope I can keep up. I just ordered the yarn and can’t wait to get started.
Alisa
Love the motivation to continue to learn more!
LisaM
This looks like a great choice. I have not made a shrug and the range of size choices make this very appealing.
Nicole M
I have not been knitting very long and I look foreward to improving my skills!
Beverly Laude
I’m going to try this one! Maybe this KAL will give me the incentive to move “up” to something harder than a hat!!
Neesie
I’m going to try this one! It’s my first KAL, but might give me the incentive to move on to something harder than a hat or scarf!!!
li
LOVE this KAL! Thanks for doing it.
Iona
I have never done a KAL before, love the pattern so will give it a try.
nicole bulger
This looks like an interesting pattern, and now I have an idea on what to make my sister for Christmas this year! I’m also looking foward to following along with everyone else and exchanging comments on what works and what dosent.
Marisa
Yeay this will be perfect for my first KAL 🙂 I’m a beginner so hopefully this will help me improve.
Diane Hutchins
This is a really cute shrug! I plan to knit it in cotton yarn and will probably shorten the sleeves for the spring and summer! I’ve never done a KAL before and look forward to it!
Amy Gresens
I love this shrug and also love Stefanie Japel’s patterns! I have her Fitted Knits book. I have made one sweater from that book and am currently working on another. I am excited about the knit-a-long!
Pia
Great choice for a KAL! This is a cute little sweater . . . I may join in with some repurposed alpaca yarn that I have.
Sabrina
I going to try the combination of larger needles and a cotton yarn.
I can never seem to follow instructions — anyway. 🙂
Thanks for offering this fun event.
Diane Swanson
I learned to knit in 4-H when I was about 9 years old, put it down for many years and started again last year at 52 years of age! I’m loving it again & can’t wait to participate in this KAL!
Jenny
I just finished the crochet along and loved it! This is such a cute and sophisticated design, I can’t wait to begin. Yarn choices are always the hardest for me, so I’m looking forward to see what Stephanie suggests. Also looking for more affordable yarn that will do justice to the design.
Sue
Perfect timing! I have been looking for a nice pattern for a shrug to make for my son’s girlfriend, and this is just what I was looking for! I can’t wait to get started.
Sue James
Beautiful! Looks like a really extraordinary pattern, and so nice to see it is written for a good range of sizes. Will definitely add to my “to do” list.
Amy Floyd
I love the look of this one. Will make it for my granddaughters. So classic!
Ellen
I am new to the list and I am new to KAL. This shrug looks like the perfect time to try! I am a 55 something Red Hatter and love to knit and crochet.
Lynn
Great pattern. I love shrugs and will try to keep up with the KAL.
Quincy
Can’t wait to start yet another project! Wooooo hoooooooo!
Cynthia
I love the pattern!—creative and wearable. I’m in!
Dvora
Hi all. I am excited to check this out. I will need to find a local non-wool substitute since I am allergic and live in Zurich. 🙂
Cheers.
Debbie L.
I really like the pattern but am not sure that I’m experienced enough for this. I’d like to try it tho. This will be the first KAL for me.
Devon Banse Dougall
Hi Everyone,
I will probably be crying for help with this one, as I need it to be very lightweight for this warmer weather. Pretty, pretty pattern – thanks, Lion Brand for doing this!
Cheers!
Gloria
I’m excited about the knitted Circle Shrug, I’ve been wanting to make one, now I’ve got the incentive. Can this be made in cotton ease or organic cotton? I’m not really a wool type person!!!
Milen
My 1st KAL and will be the 1st time knitting something for myself. Very cute pattern. Looking forward to get started!
Anna
I think I will need help on gauge. I knit a baby shrug that ended up fitting my 6 year old!
Leslie
I like the fitted nature of this shrug. Although I’ve never even tried a shrug on before I would like to do this. I have two questions. 1) Can this be done in cotton or bamboo of the same weight? 2) Is the yardage correct? It’s more than I would use for a normal loose fitting cardigan sweater.
Yours in Needlework,
Leslie
SuzieQ
Looks like fun..will be participating..something to make me dig out my knitting needles from storage..
Caroline Blecherman
What an exciting KAL! I think I will make it for my daughter.
Jerri
Hi,
My name is Jerri and I’m JWInc on Flickr, Etsy and Ravelry. I’ve been knitting for 3 years and can make socks and sweaters and am now attempting entralac, so I guess you could call me an “advanced beginner”?? Maybe? I’ve also been crocheting for 9 years now.I’m 30 years old and a new stay-at-home mom of a hilarious 3 year old boy! I look forward to this knit-along, as it will be my first! 🙂
Deb Perras
What a gorgeous shrug. I have only knit one thing (a sweater) at an intermediate level and that was in a class, about 15 years ago, but what the heck, I’m giving it a try. I haven’t done a lot of knitting and just recently picked it up again. I’ll keep you posted.
Ann
Great pattern for my first KAL!
Gina
I am what I might consider an advanced beginner/intermediate knitter. It will be interesting to see how the shrug will turn out!
Kim
When I saw this KAL and the shrug I thought it would be a lot of fun and a challenge since I am fairly new at knitting. But then I talked myself out of it that I should focus on the other projects that I have planned. But then I went to Micheals today and was looking at the yarn. When I saw they had some Vanna’s Choice yarn that would look gorgeous in this pattern for only a $1.00 a skein how could I pass it up! So I guess you will be counting me in.
maylene oliveira
I am very excited to start this KAL. I saw this pattern a couple of days ago and was very excited. I love her patterns especially this one. i have knitted several of her other patterns from her first book “Fitted Knits”
Thanks again
Maylene
Rosie
First timer to a KAL and looking forward to the experience as well as the project (too cute!) to complete. Intermediate knitter of 6 years and ready for a more textured knit to move me on up to another level of knitster!
Cynthia
Hi,
This will be my first KAL too!
I want to knit a gauge, but I’m a bit confused. What stitch do I knit the gauge in? The textured stripe stitch? or the seed stitch?
I’m interested in possible yarn alternatives, because I’ve made a vow to use up my extensive stash whenever possible, versus buying new yarn.
Thanks!
Cyn
Zontee says: Hi Cynthia, you should make it in the textured stripe. See Stefanie’s post for more on the gauge swatch.
Danna
really like the style of this shrug – hope i can follow along
Joyce
I think this is a great choice for a KAL. I have never participated in a KAL before because I was not interested enough in the pattern. This one is really nice
Jennifer W
Dani,
In response to your #739 post, I find that if I go down 2 sizes in the large needle size to meet guage then I go down 2 sizes for the smaller needle. I’m not an expert so maybe Stephanie will address your questions when she begins posting.
Jennifer W
Dani,
In response to your post #1041, I find that usually your length in the pattern usually instructs to you knit until the piece measures x number of inches so it shouldn’t matter but resubmit your question to Stephanie when she begins posting here.
Jennifer W.
Estelle Green
Thanks for choosing a shrug. I’ve wanted to try one but as a beginner I know I will need help. With a KAL I can ask questions and read the posts.
Thanks
E
Brenda
I’m also interested in yarn choices–the lighter ones? Excited to get started!!
Zontee says: Hi Brenda, as I’ve said above, Cotton-Ease and Nature’s Choice Organic Cotton are nice choices for warm-weather alternatives. Quite a few people seem to be using the Cotton-Ease. Good luck with your project!
DORIE
I am looking forwrd to this new expirence.
dedra lee
can’t wait to start knitting again
Becky
Love the shrug and can’t wait to go shopping for some yarn. Can’t decide on a color yet…
patty
Nice pattern for my first KAL-I think it will make a nice gift for my daughter-any ideas how to shrink it(size-wise) for 2 little granddaughters?(sizes 6 & 10)? Or does anyone know of a shrug pattern for little girls using yje 4-ply yarn? Thanks!
Zontee says: Hi Patty, here’s a sweet pattern for girls using a category #4 yarn that I particularly like.
Please note that when you talk about 4-ply yarns, there are two meanings. One, is the UK/Australian meaning of a category #1 (fine, fingering weight) yarn and the other is a classic-looking construction technique of yarn (like Vanna’s Choice or Wool-Ease). I wasn’t sure which you meant, so I’ve recommended a category #4 thickness/weight yarn, which is what the Textured Circle Shrug is made in. If you’re interested in a different thickness/weight of yarn, please see our Yarn by Weights chart.
Jan Vafa
Hi
I’ve always wanted to knit a shrug, but haven’t had the courage to try it on my own. This one is so nice – and it comes in the Plus sizes! I just have to try it… Now to work this in around school work…
Jan
Kelley Poulos
I’ve never done a knit-along, sounds fun.
pam frenchak
This is the first KAL that I am going to do- the shrug is exactly what I have been looking for. thank you, pam
crystal
I’ve been looking for a good shrug pattern and this looks great. I haven’t knitted in many years but hopefully it won’t take long for me to get back into the groove.
Heidi
Perfect! My sister and I are looking for a project to do with each other but also get help from OTHERS!!!!! Just waiting on the 40″ circulars! Our stores didn’t carry anything longer than 29″!!!!! And that is enough to make you go crazy!!!!!! Looking forward to it!
Heidi
Sandy
What a lovely project for a kal. I did the tunic on the last kal and it turned out beautiful. So beautiful that I got to make 3 of them because all of my girls wanted one. Maybe I can actually make this one for myself.
Melissa Rummel
i can’t wait to get started. i’m a little confused on some of the stitches, but i’m sure i will figure it out! so excited!!!!!
Julie
This shrug looks like a real winner. I am completing my first Lion Brand CAL right now and have throughly enjoyed myself so I thought I would join in and make this great pattern too.
thanh
I love, love, love this pattern and am really excited about this KAL.
Sericea
I’m going to give it a try, I’ve never made anything more complicated that a diaper cover before, so here goes nothing…I’m excited!
shannon
I really like stephanie’s designs…they are so classy and timeless. I have her Fitted Knits book, and she gives good advice for those of us looking to alter patterns to achieve a more custom fit- good for those of us worried about the sleeves;)
Judith
I am so glad that i subscribe to this website. it is the only way that i can get hip new paterns to knit. My local yarn shop dose not stock new paterns. lol My grandmother has some of the same paterns in her stash
shawna
i love this pattern, i cant wait to make it!
Leighanne
I’m so excited to start this pattern as my first KAL! What a beautiful way to challenge myself! Thanks.
Rose
This is going to be my first every Knit Along.
I’ve never done anything more than knit a large rectangle that I then sewed up each end to make the Criss Cross Shrug that was on the Lion Brand website…my sister-in-law absolutely fell in love with it…I’ve made many, many scarves but I really want to learn all I possibly can about making more advanced, beautiful projects.
I consider myself an advanced beginner knitter…I can basically follow a straight forward pattern using knit/purl/knit 2 together/make one, etc…I get very confused when it comes to making something that will turn out to be shaped into something gorgeous, so I’m hoping, with everyone’s patience and help, I’ll be able to do this…I’m not so good at reading instructions and understanding them…I’m more a visual person…if I see someone doing it, it makes it so much easier for me to wrap my brain around it…so I’ll most likely be asking tons of questions if we get to something that I don’t understand about knitting the pattern.
Thanks for “listening”…look forward to this.
Anne
I too have never tried a KAL. This pattern is very tempting and looks like one I would like to try. I’ve read some of the earlier comments and also wonder about the width of the sleeves…. I have done a fair amount of knitting, most recently socks for Xmas and birthday presents so I’m ready for something different. Now to download the pattern and pick up the needed wool. Can this also be done in a cotton or cotton blend, and if so any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Zontee says: Hi Anne, please see my response to Brenda’s question (#1157).
Sadie
I am going to give it a try!
Kathy
I’ve never done a knit along or knitted a sweater, so both will be new to me, but I’m going to give it a go. Now to go download the pattern and get my supplies!
Patty T.
Oh! This is going to be fun!!
I’ve never done KAL before!
I’m making this for my daughter… I know she’ll LOVE it!!
(Hmmm… now what color???)
Suzy DeHaven
I’m new to the list. How did you guys get this so early ? I’m in. I’m a new knitter of 5 months. Wish me luck 🙂
Stacey
Hi, just got my e-mail and this really sounds like fun!!! I’ve been knitting for almost two years, but have been a crochet nut most of my life!! To her chagrin, my grandmother was never able to teach me knit, but the crochet I picked up fine! I am really excited! Thank you for this opportunity!
Karyl
Had seen this pattern and decided I HAD to have it,
THEN saw that it was going to be a knit-along-piece! What a wonderful coincidence! Though, I must admit, I am NOT using the color shown, nor am I using wool (allergic). Am really looking forward to doing this with a whole bunch of other yarn-lovers!
Lorien
Ooh! I think this would be fabulous in cotton!
Seirretta D.
Hi, love the pattern. I’m going to join, this will be my first KAL and I am not a very good knitter (just teaching myself) so I am hoping to be able to do this. Wish me luck. Seirretta
Eva S.
I’m an intermediate beginner and would love to make something I can wear other than scarves and hats. Other sweaters I have attempted have not had the correct fit (either too big or too small) so I’m hoping this KAL will help me make corrections before I end up with a garment I won’t wear. I’m looking forward to having help and support from fellow knitters!
Deb
My name is Deb. Ilive in Oregon. Looking forward to this knit along.
Laura
What a great pattern! I have twin girls, so I may end up making two!!!
Lili
have wanted to knit with company- Question-is there an advantage to knitting continental style versus American/English style? it looks as if it might take less time to finish?
Zontee says: Hi Lili, some knitters find Continental to be a faster method of knitting. It can also be useful for patterns with Intarsia. But since changing the way you knit can make you significantly slower when you first learn a new technique, it may not be worth it for you to switch just for this project, especially if you’re happy knitting American/English style.
Rosemary
Great idea a KAL. Hope I am not too far behind just will start casting on tonight!
Suzanne
I love the shrug too. I have had some yarn stashed for something like that, so I get to start now 🙂
Cool!
Lori
Hi All; This is the first time particapating in a KAL and am anxious to meet fellow knitters and share tips and techniques. A shrug is a great design element for your closet. I have a beautiful mohair that would be fun to wear.
Sweet!!
Judy Nies
I want to join the KAL. I’ve downloaded the pattern, bought Vanna’s Choice, Eggplant and now I’m going to knit the guage. But what do I do to be able to read and follow the blog? I’ve never Blogged or read a Blogg. Do I have to go through all the old messages by going from link to link everyday? Is there a shortcut?
Thanks,
Judy
Zontee says: Hi Judy, you can go to blog.lionbrand.com on Thursdays for new posts. Throughout the week, the blog is updated with other content. If you’d rather skip over all of that other content, simply click “knit-along” under the “Categories” title on the right-hand bar, and the blog will show only knit-along-related articles. We will also include a link in our weekly e-newsletter each week for the blog.
Lorraine Zimmer
I just got this email from Lion Brand, printed off the pattern for the shrug and now have to find the yarn I want to use in my huge stash! I am from Chardon, Ohio and have been knitting for about 5 years. I actually learned from my Great Aunt June back in 7th grade but then I didn’t have any local family/friends/store that knew the craf. So I taught myself cross stitch (my Grandpa taught me needlepoint)and I also learned to crochet in 5th grade (but really only have dabbled in crochet since–you know I have a baby blanket which I have almost completed, intended for my niece who is now 19 y.o.). Those UFO’s just keep growing. But I am almost done with my Snug Booties (sewing and felting is all that is left to do)and now feel I am ready to challenge myself with Stefanie Japel’s Textured Circle Shrug. I have never blogged, or participated in a Knit-A-Long so I will do my best to keep up, even if it means doing it “after hours” – when my 4 y.o. daughter goes to bed! Now just to be able to stay awake….

This is my first knit-along. I am a well-seasoned knitter so the only difficult part will probably be getting at it and getting it done. I am glad that the blogs will be posted for some time because though I want to make this item, I work full-time, plus I train dogs two evenings a week, so we will see how this goes. It will be nice reading other comments and hearing of others’ progress as well.
Judy
Never have done this before, can’t wait to try it –
Allyson
I’m a little late in signing up, but this looks like a fun pattern to try. This is my first KAL, but it sounds like a fun way to work on a project (and maybe I’ll be more motivated to finish!).
Linda Schneider
I’ve been meaning to do a KAL and this one looks perfect. The one sweater I knitted turned out way too big once done, even tho I checked and rechecked my guage so I’m looking forward to the help!
Barbara
Looking forward to my first KAL. My daughter will be my model for this one.
Wvalgae
After a winter of making things for others this looks like a great opportunity to make something for myself!
LilChickadee
This would be a fun first KAL!
Lynn
This pattern is so cute! My daughter would look great in it. Is it going to be easy for someone who doesn’t have a lot of knitting experience? I’ve knitted a couple baby afghans and a scarf. I’ve been crocheting for about 40 years.
Zontee says: Hi Lynn, this pattern is an intermediate pattern. See my response to Lisa’s question (#283) for more suggestions.
nada
Very stylish and the color is amasing but I wish if It was a crochet pattern
Lolita Dally
Oh wow! Gotta do it! Susie
Dianne Frascone
I am so looking forward to attempting the beautiful sweater but my question is about the method of casting on. There are several types. Which one is recommended?
Thank you,
Dianne
Zontee says: Hi Dianne, you’re right that many types of cast ons exist. Personally, I like the cable cast on for sweaters, as it’s nice and stretchy. You may also want to post your comment on Stefanie’s latest post and get her opinion/the opinion of others working on the sweater.
I always do a long tail cast on.
Stefanie
Angela
This will be my first kal. I’m hoping it goes well! 🙂
Regina
My first KAL as well, now I must look up the cable cast-on!
Jennifer
Love your yarns and your patterns as I knit lots for cancer patients (I’m a recovering one) as well as family!
Michele
I am a newbie to knitting … I have taught myself through how to web videos & enjoy it very much. I have one question … how much yarn is in a ball of yarn? I cannot find the answer! I would love to participate with you, however, I don’t know how much yarn I will need! Thanks for your help!
Michele
Zontee says: Hi Michele, LB Collection Organic Wool has 185 yards per hank. You can find all of the specs for any of our yarns by clicking on the “Yarns” tab on LionBrand.com and selecting the yarn you’re looking for. You should see all the details at the top of the page, but if you don’t, make sure that you click the plus sign ( ) to expand the details. On all of our patterns, you can click on the name of the yarn(s) in the materials list to go directly to its details page.
Heather
Woah! There are a ton of people on this KAL. This is my first one… I’m very excited! Stefanie Japel is my hero!
janice
sophia 30th april i always knit a size larger than stated
Kristine Stewart
I’ve made some of Stefanie Japel’s patterns before. They are actually not as scary as they may seem for such a lovely finished garmet. can’t wait to get started! Been eyeballing the Glam Knits book for a long while now.
Stacy
This is beautiful! Looking forward to participating!!

Yeah, Another reason to shop for more yarn!!! I’m looking forward to this.
In answer to your question, Michele, this particular yarn is 185 yds or 170m to a ball. Most yarn have the yardage on them, though I have some so old in my stash that they just have the weight in grams. 🙁
I taught myself to knit two years ago. It’s worth the effort. Before that, I was a crocheter.
Krista
This is my first KAL and I’m looking forward to it. I just need to get my yarn…the fun part!
Louise
I’ve been looking for a shrug to knit – this will be perfect! I made the tree of life afghan as a baby blanket for my great-nephew last summer, so this will be my second KAL. Thanks!
Kristi
Can’t wait to get started. I have a nice cotton yarn I think I will use. Just need to do the gauge swatch and I am ready to knit. Down in the back for 3 weeks so should be able to move along nicely. I did the Tree of Life Afghan last year and the CAL in March. Thanks for KAL, love the pattern.
Paula Lynn
This is just what I was looking for to knit for my Mother, for Mothers day. I bet I could pull this off, the patteren looks easy.
I can’t wait to see how many people show their circle shrugs. this is gonna be neat.

Been knitting forever(35 years), never done a KAL. I’ll add it to my endless list of projects that I’m happy to add to. Gives me an excuse to go buy more yarn 🙂 Hate seaming, can’t wait to try this pattern. It looks gorgeous!
Joanne
I recently finished a shrug using Vanna’s Choice. The pattern was horrible and I have decided to unknit that shrug into this new one. I did the same thing with another sweater and turned it into the Tree of Life blanket. I gave that to a friend of mine who is a cancer survivor along with Sid Sheldon’s “The Giving Tree”. Both of us cried for a long time….knitting is such a cleansing hobby!! Enjoy everyone!!!
GJ
Just opened my e-mail and read the information about knitting the shrug. Checking to see if I have any yarn in my stash to use before I purchase the recommended yarn.
The shrug looks great. Can’t wait to get started!
Julie Boydell
Hi Keri #747,
You read my mind! What colour? I’ve got 84 which is a gorgeous pink/orange/brown with a hint of green 🙂
BJ
What a great shrug. Thanks for having sizing for those of us that are a bit beyond the norm.
Geeta
I’ve never really been a KAL person… before now! I’d eyeballed this pattern before but was sitting the fence (no offense, Stephanie… actually, it’s because I have “Fitted Knits” and frankly want to knit so much of it that I’m sort of paralyzed by desire).
But then I saw klara84’s circle shrug on Ravelry:
http://www.ravelry.com/projects/klara84/textured-circle-shrug
I’m so in, it’s not even funny. I love how she’s thought up so many stylish ways to wear the shrug. That sash just threw me over the edge.
I’ve narrowed my yarn choices down to two: either wool (Jojoland sport in this delicious ripe magenta) or cotton (Knitpicks Shine Sport in Orchid. Mmmm)Anyone has a suggestion to help me choose?
Hurrah. I’m looking forward to this.

Finally had time to check this out. I think this would make a great graduation present for my granddaughter. Know which yarn to use — hmmm.
Can’t wait to start.
Dale
Thanks Zontee! re: post #608
I have definitely learned in the past that if my brain can’t visualize what I’m being asked to do, just do it! Either I see what’s intended once I’m done or I get a little intuitive feel as to whether or not that’s what is definitely being asked for. It’s just scary when you’re not really sure, you go on with the next steps THEN realize it needs to be corrected. RRRRRiiiiipppp! augh! Well, knitting does teach one to keep going!
Lucy
I’ve never been part of a knit along but this shrug looks perfect. I’ve been searching for a project my mom would be proud of – she gets all my firsts!
Quenby
Wow! Really interesting design–architectural yet feminine…this will be my first KAL…and organic wool, nice!!
Mary Alice
Hi everybody,
This will be my first KAL.
I’m very excited.
Sheri
Wow, I didn’t know that I could take a knitting class online. This is awesome! I ordered the kit but I am glad Stephanie mentioned that Cotton Ease yarns could be a substitute because I have them in my yarn repository (i.e. my closet). 😉
Zontee says: Hi Sheri, we’re glad you’re joining us! The idea of a knit-along is more of a cooperative effort than a class. We’re all here to teach (and learn from) each other. Stefanie, as our host, serves as a guide, but everyone who’s participating should feel free to chime in with tips and thoughts.
Anne Harnesk
I have only recently found the Lion Brand site. This will be my first knit along too. I have ordered the wool as Michael’s in Edmonton does not carry the LB Collection Organic Wool.I hope it arrives before next week. I wish the Canadian stores would carry more of the “out of the ordinary” wools!
Do you have to subscribe to Ravelry to follow along?
I’m really looking forward to this!!
Zontee says: Hi Anne, Ravelry is a members-only site (that’s fun if you’re interested in joining), but you don’t have to join to follow along. You can just knit, follow along here on the blog, and comment. OR if you’re on Flickr, you can join our group there.
Nancy
Hi everyone, this is my first KAL too. Can’t wait to get started. Have my yarn, needles and instructions. Now it is time to go and wait for my son to get out of school. Time for my gauge swatch.
Grace
Sounds like fun…never followed a KAL before and this may help me stay on track and finish. It is a cute garment. If it comes out good make make severak as I have 4 daughters!
Carole Jacoby
I am an O.C.D. knitter and would love to participate in the Knit-Along. However, I have gone beyond my tolerance level and can no longer work with wool at present do to allergic bronchitis. Do you have any other fiber suggestions in making the shrug?
Zontee says: Hi Carole, please click here to see my response to Beth K.’s question (#113).
Jennifer Zhao
Hi, can I just find the host post without go thru all the responses? I am sure this responses list will be a lot longer then this (its 1,234 responses for now). What is the url for this blog? Thank you, jennifer
Zontee says: Hi Jennifer, does your web browser not have a navigation (URL) bar at the top of the page? If not, you may need to go to “view” and select the navigation bar. The Lion Brand Notebook is at blog.lionbrand.com. New posts by Stefanie will appear at blog.lionbrand.com on Thursdays.
A trick for finding a specific person/term: Hit Ctrl F (Open Apple F on Macs) and the type in your search term, then hit “find.”
If you’re referring to the URL bar when you’re commenting, it’s for your website. If you don’t have one, leave it blank.
Jane
This is my first KAL, and I love the pattern.
I also enjoyed the Moderne Jacket Crochet-Along. I plan to use some lightweight wool from my stash and will start swatching this weekend!
Diane
This is such a cute pattern. I think I’m going to make it for myself for my next cruise. I always freeze at dinner! I’ve been knitting 40 years and made a poncho type thing for my daughter last year for her honeymoon cruise. She really liked it, but I wanted something with arms so I didn’t ‘flap.’ This looks perfect.
Betty
Cool shrug! Can’t wait to start it
Kimberley E.
This is my first KAL or any other kind of group knitting projects, and I am nervous as anything. I tend to start and work really fast at the beginning, but life always intervenes. But, this one I will try to do one step at a time and keep at it. I love the pattern and look forward to the challange. I’m a very sloppy worker when the piece is for me, but I want to try to do better work this time, even if it is for me! 🙂
De-De
Great choice for a KAL, and it’s generous of North Light and Stephanie to donate such a pleasing and versatile pattern – and in larger sizes, too! Thanks to everyone involved!
Mirl56
This KAL should be fun and interesting. This is a great design. I’m a bit worried about getting guage – I understand in a circular design both row and stitch guage are equally important. Anxious to see any tips that the other kintters can offer.
Marilyn
Helen
Hello and many thanks for this fantastic opportunity – I am new to knitting and with some help (an explaination of stocking stitch and reverse stocking stitch) have completed the guage sample and have started the cast on. Can any one help me with kfb and pfb I cannot figure out how to do this and it is getting quite messy. Perhaps I should have started on something a little easier but the challenge is good and the end result hopefully amazing.
Zontee says: Hi Helen, you can find explanations of most abbreviations at LionBrand.com by going to the Learning Center tab and clicking on “abbreviations”. Click here for kfb instructions. Pfb is the same thing, except you purl into the stitch instead of knit.
Marilyn
Great pattern choice – so cute! I’ve got my yarn and needles ready to go. Hope to learn a lot from all the participants.
Julie
I am excited to work on this shrug. I have only been knitting for 6 months and am currently working on my first wearable piece…the first pattern from “Fitted Knits”. It is coming out nicely and I find Stephanie’s patterns easy to read and beautifully designed. But I need to put that project aside to start on THIS. This KAL will be a great learning experience for me, and if I am successful the shrug will be a great wardrobe addition.
I have started and am still in the swatching stage. I am up to size 10 needles now. I noticed that most people have had to go down in needle size, so I hope I am not doing something wrong.
Julie
For Helen #1244
KFB means to knit through the front loop and then the back loop. PFB means to Purl through the front loop and then the back loop. You knit through the front as usual, but don’t slip the stitch off the needle, and then knit through the back loop of the same stitch so as to create an extra stitch. Likewise for the Purl. I learned this while working on the pattern from Fitted Knits. It creates a neat bias around the shoulders.
I am certainly not an expert though and hopefully someone else can explain it better.
Nancy
I can’t wait to see this finished!
Maureen
Hi All,i am a little nerves in starting this I knit a little and NEVER done any thing to wear. But it LOOKS great. I* am looking forward in doing this wuith you all. At least I now uif I have any questions you all are here to help. Can this be done for a beginner Someone who does not knit a lot but crouchts more? Thank you I hgave 2 daughters and would love to make them each one.
Maureen
This is my 1st KAL too.I am hoping I can do this It will be fun in doing it wih everyone.
Michelle
Today its snowing outside so the shrug seems like the perfect project to start. What yarn to use, what yarn to use…. the search for yarn is definitely part of the fun.
Penny
I saw this shrug in a catalog and fell in love with it. I thought it would be perfect for my DDs but it surely wouldn’t be offered in my size. Well, hallelujah! It comes in my size and it looks like a very interesting project. Thanks to Lion and to Stephanie for offering a great KAL.
Deb
I’m looking forward to knitting this shrug. I usually don’t wear them since I think they’re for younger people than I—But because this one is long in the back, I feel it’s good for anyone! I can’t wait to get my yarn and get started. Thank you so much for posting this pattern for free!
Michelle
Some of the yarn is measured in metres instead of yards here’s my yardage conversion for the different sizes. 807 (986, 1076, 1345, 1524, 1703) I’d like to see metres included for the instructions next time too please.
Mandy
This looks pretty cool!
I like patterns because it means you can use whatever color you want so the possibility’s are almost endless! You can make one to match your prom dress or make one to be the color of you favorite church dress or skirt! This pattern will be a nice one to add to a collection!
Shirley
I am always needing something on my arms to stay warm and this is so cute that I know it will fit the bill. I just hope that I as a beginner have enough sense to finish it.
Carolyn Summerhays
Will the posts be updated each Thursday? Or how will know when the next session will be.
Zontee says: Hi Carolyn, yes, there will be a new post at blog.lionbrand.com every Thursday. You need to go to that main blog homepage (NOT this one, which will not change) to see new posts.
Reatha
Hey I love what was picked. I’m in and so excited. I did the lux tunic last time and really enjoyed the knitting and the sweater all winter. I think I want to make this out of cotton and in a denim blue to go with all of my jeans and tanks this summer. Ok, off to buy some yarn.
Julie
I already have yarn and the book for this project but it’s been waiting for me to get around to it. This has inspired me to go and get it out right now and make a start.
Joann Osborn
This is all new to me as I’ve never belonged to a KAL and I’m not even sure my hand knitting skills will be enough for this shrug, but I like it so much I’m ready to chance it. Thanks for the great pattern.
Audrey M. DeNeui
Hi!
I have a question. I have started on the shrug, and I’m assuming that KFB means the same thing as PFB, except it’s knit instead of purl in the same stitch? Also, are we really supposed to be increasing on the right side row?
thanks!
Audrey
Zontee says: Hi Audrey, KFB = knit in the front and back of the stitch. The explanation’s at the bottom of the pattern under “Abbreviations,” and if you’re looking at it on our website, you can click on the abbreviations for more detailed explanations. Increase following the directions, a kfb is not that noticeable no matter which side you’re on.

On May 2nd (message#302) I asked if this pattern could be adjusted to go to the waist or hips and have not noticed any response. Is there some other place where I could get some assistance with this question?
So far I have picked up some helpful advice re:use of other Lion Brand yarns and the conversion of yardageneeds. I think I’d like to make this in cotton or cotton blend.
Please and Thank you.
Kathy
Awsome! I love the color and have a friend that this would look great on. So I just have to do this for her. I usually Knit because I like the detail, however crocheting is more relaxing for me. I just have to finish one of my current projects before I start this–and I am a true crafter, I already have the yarn in my stash. Thanks for all you do for us. I also appreciated the designer host will be the author.
Jeanette
This would look *fabulous* on my daughter. Great KAL!
Carolyn Anderson
I’m an avid crocheter who is learning to knit and this seems like a perfect way to do a nice project other than scarves. (after all how many can one own?) I’m going to the store now to purchase the yarn.
Nancy Profitt
This is my first KAL and I’ve always wanted to knit a shrug. So far my biggest project has been socks. 🙂
I am up to the point of starting my sleeves and doing my shrug in a size medium. Am I understanding the pattern right – that I just work even until my piece measures 7-1/2 inches, and just ignore the DEC ROW section? Thank You.
Zontee says: Hi Nancy, if you’re working the small or medium size, that’s correct.
Net16
I have never participated in a knit along or knit blog. Is there a specific time for the KAL to start on Thursday?
Zontee says: Hi Net16, no, the new posts (articles by Stefanie) appear on Thursdays, but you can read them anytime and work at your own pace.
Dawn Vo
Can’t wait to get started on my first KAL— daughters knitting along, also. This is great!! Thanks !!!!!!!
Melissa Rummel
Hi! I am doing the medium size, & I just got up to the 204 stitch row & worked the even row. Now, the pattern says to break yarn. Am I supposed to leave a little of a tail for later? Then I start on the separate sleeves from body, am I supposed to start this on the size 8 needle? What do I do with the yoke? What does scrap yarn mean? I know I have alot of questions…. I am so excited about this shrug & cant wait to see it completed! Thank you for your help!
Kris Harrison
Hi, I am a nervous starting to knit this projects as I am a beginner, only knitted scarfs and afghans. Looking forward to something more challenging. Read the pattern a couple of times not quite sure if I understand it but I will keep trying. Just trying to figure out the beginning and how many to cast on.
Kris
Kristie K
I’m onboard. The shrug looks chic…hope it will be just as chic for this big-girl in the 3X! LOL I never did a KAL, but I have just branched into clothing…right now I’m knitting the cute (free) family hoodie downloaded from the Lion Brand site in Lion homespun yarn for my youngest son, in a gorgeous yellow. All my other honeys are all watching progress and getting pushy for their own hoodies! But, I like doing more than a single project at a time or I get BORED.
Pamela K.
Interesting use of ribbing.
Jenni
Decided to make this after a long break from knitting, had already started it when the email about a knit along arrived. Never knitted raglan down before so I’m delighted to have a knit along to consult when it all gets too much! Lovely pattern to re-ignite a hobby with. May actually finish this one!
Joyce
I am going to give this shrug a try. I did the CAL and it is almost finished and I am quite pleased. Love reading the blogs – is there any way that the most recent date of a blog could be on top rather than the bottom? I am doing mine in a very deep purple. I also love the pattern and the different stitching. I don’t think I will get bored with this one. Thanks for having this KAL.
Linda
I am excited to get started. I am working on my gauge swatch and hopefully I can master the pattern. I have never knitted a fitted garment only ponchos and scarfs. Thanks for allowing me to try my hand at this along with others!
Margaret
Looks like a great pattern. Just finished Retreat Cardi and I’m ready for another of your wonderful patterns!!
sillyknitter
lovely shrug…gotta knit it
Maria
This is a great pattern. I look forward to learning how to fit the pattern as I knit.
Faye
I love all of Stefanie Japel’s patterns. I am up to the rev st part. I may do mine in 2 colors.
Cindy
This is my first knit-along. I have been a knitter for several years, but mainly knitted scarves, hats, and a few boxy sweaters. This is my first time knitting something fitted. I am very excited about it, and having regular postings keeps me inspired and motivated.
Briana
I am excited to join in my first KAL, I’ve been knitting about three years, and just have to say, I absolutely adore the last shrug I knit, from Fitted Knits. This will be my third Stefanie Japel item! I am using I Love This Yarn! in Seaspray Stripe, on size 7’s. Stefanie, you rock!! All of your patterns are just gorgeous!
Faye
I am a little confused about the rev st part. If you do five rows of rev st starting on the right side and then 6 rows of st starting on wrong side, you end up with it looking the same on the front. What am I doing wrong? Thanx. Faye
Nancy Y.
For Faye #1286,
First you do your 5 rows of Rev St, then when you start your set of St st you begin with a purl row. That is 2 purl rows. You don’t do 6 rows of St st. I know it was quite confusing until I just did it and it came out right. I hope this helps.
Viola
I finished the first part of the KAL last night. Thank you stephanie for the great instructions. They helped alot. I have been knitting for only about 8 months and any tips help. Can’t wait to finish and wear this shrug.

Hi all. Getting a late start but excited to begin. First KAL. I’ve never even tried on a shrug but this one is so cute i can’t resist making it. we’ll see.
Trudy
I first learned to knit when I was about 12 but my teacher did not show me how to hold the yarn. She said I would eventually learn that. I never did. I just always let it dangle and would pick it up for each stitch. I loved knitting and knitted that way for more than 40 years, but it was a slow process. Several weeks ago a friend showed me how to hold the yarn and the knitting went much faster. I love it even more now. I was so excited to be able to participate in the knit along. I realized this would be a good way to improve on the technique and learn new things with weekly instructions explained. I have finished up to the separation of the sleeves and did that in 5 days. I am amazed at how much faster I can knit now that I hold my yarn correctly. I’m also more relaxed and it’s easier on my hands. This is great. I can’t wait to see what the next project will be.
Melba Durham
Hello, this Shrug KAL is great. I am totally enjoying it and presently on the last ‘leg’, meaning the Neck Trim. I am one of those who knit by hand, by machine, crochet, tat, etc, etc and always enjoy a new project, easy or advanced.
Santy
I am a beginner knitter. I downloaded the pattern over a week ago and just bought the yarn Vanna’s Choice. Thanks to Zontee for yarn substitute 🙂
I can’t wait to start it…but I have a question about the yarn Vanna’s Choice. On the label for gauge 4″x4″ it said to use a 5.5mm needle. It took less rows so I changed the needle to smaller but how much smaller can I go without making the knitting too stiff?
Are there any tips about how small the needle can go from the suggestion on the label?
Thanks you
jackie
i was reading through my old emails and discovered this KAL. It looks great.
i am a grandma of 8 who has been knitting for the past 35 years. i also crochet, embroider, cross stitch, weave a little, make soap and candles among other things. This looks like alot of fun.

Liz
This is nice….I have always liked raglan sleeves….they always fit so very well.
Karen
I am so excited! This will be my first time to knit along with you. I learned how to knit in school but set it down until about a year ago. About 25 years between there, lol. My neice wants this shrug so I’m hoping, with some luck, I can make it for her. Love the Lion Brand website and all the great ideas and patterns. Keep up the great work.
Helen
Zontee & Julie thanks for your help with comments re my question 1244. The learner center is fantastic. I have finished my shrug and love it. Could not have done it without the knit along. Fantastic. The learner center is my new best friend. Many, many thanks.

I wondered if anyone can help me with the textured circle shrug pattern . Im now on the neck trim and am working on the “Inc rnd 1†row. However I seem to have too many stitches between markers. Im knitting the size 36- 38, and I followed the instructions of
“Work to first marker, *[k1, p1, RLI, p1] 13 (15, 17, 18, 20, 22) times, [k1, p1] 1 (1, 1, 1, 0, 1) timeâ€
And as I’m doing the second size I carried out the “k1, p1, RLI, p1†15 times, then “K1 P1†once. However rather than reaching the marker, I then had 15 stitches left before the marker. Please can anyone help as its driving me mad!
Ive checked again and again and I have the markers in the right place, and picked up the right number of stitches at the start but it still doesnt work 🙁

I just read your info and it said that you make soap–I would like to try but need help
thank you

I’ve skimmed almost 1300 posts, but don’t find the question that I have, which makes me think that it must be me who’s reading the pattern wrong. Here’s my question:
I’m up to the part where you start the sleeves. I transferred 58 sts to the larger needle. Then comes the DEC row (RS). It tells you to dec 2 sts in that row and then says there should be 67 sts remaining. Am I crazy? How can you decrease from 58 and have MORE sts left when you’re done?
Zontee says: Hi Linda, read Stefanie’s posts on Separating the Sleeves form the Body and the Sleeves, where she gives a breakdown of each step of both sections of the pattern, which should hopefully help. (Click the orange links to go to those blog posts.)

I don’t understand the increase rows. They don’t make sense to me. It’s very frustrating after getting to that point in the pattern!
Zontee
Hi Kfriedlander3, sorry to hear that. Shoot an email to us at support@lionbrand.com with specifically what’s confusing you, and we’d be happy to help.
