How to Knit the Hygge Look + A Special Giveaway!

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

If you haven’t yet found the Hygge in your everyday, now’s your chance! We’re sharing two great chances to knit the hygge look, and add some cozy to your space & vibe. This Danish movement swept our nation and given a new sparkle to cold nights, and we’re feeling the squishy benefits in yarns & projects. Kristy Glass Knits shares a favorite pillow project, plus some heart-felt thoughts about quick knits. Plus, a simple & stunning knit kit, to add some hygge to any room instantly. Make sure you comment below… we’ll be having a special giveaway, and all commenters will be eligible!

Kristy Glass Knits: The Big Bold Pillow

Kristy Glass is all about how to knit the hygge look! She reached out about a particular project she had in mind, and here’s the sweet video she posted:

She’d worked up the fabulous cowl you see her wearing, and felt maybe it had gone too quickly. She was looking for a project to spend the evening with – and then the Big Bold Pillow caught her eye. The project calls for our Wow! Yarn, and the Big Stix circular needles, and you can whip it up in one sitting. Below, you’ll see the pillow pictured in Non-Dairy Creamer (white), but you could cast it on in whatever color suits your space.

You’ll need your own pillow form, and one smart commenter suggested matching the pillowcase to the yarn you plan to use. Our Wow! comes in a generous handful of very fun colors, and you’ll be happy to invested in the Big Stix for any jumbo knitting projects. Kristy Glass offers this tender idea: if working up this project for a friend or loved one, try holding them in your heart while you’re crafting. It’s like a one-hour meditation, sending good vibes their way!

Knit the Hygge Look: The Calais Afghan

If a blanket is better-suited to your space, we’d love to introduce you to the Calais Afghan.

Calais Afghan

Calais Afghan

This beautiful knit hardly looks like a beginner project, the result is so stunning! Just look at that beautiful edging. It’s not only a beautiful piece that will add a focal point to any room, think of the lovely moments you’ll spend cozied up underneath!

The Calais Afghan works up in 8 balls of our LB Collection Wool – a super bulky, 100% wool that we adore. You’ll also want to pick up a pair of Lion Brand Super Circs – our circular knitting needles made specially for enormous projects. They’re Size 50 (25mm), and measure 45″, and are surprisingly light-weight. Even your biggest WIPs will become portable on these handy circs!

Our Special Hygge Giveaway!

We’ll be choosing one comment at random to receive some special hygge treats. The lucky winner will receive ‘The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living’ and our Big Bold Pillow Kit! Good luck!

Cast on Coziness

We so hope you’ve enjoyed these very hygge suggestions, and the special video from Kristy Glass Knits. We’ll be taking a page from her book, and the next time we knit for a loved one, we’ll make a point of having them in mind while crafting. Let us know if you’ve crafted anything particularly hygge lately, or if you’re inspired by one of the projects above!

  • Lovely projects. I keep reading about Hygge and these big knit projects, but have yet to try other. Love crafting for others and love the sentiment about “holding them in your heart.” Everything I make is made with love – especially for someone else – and I literally put love into them, often praying for the person I’m making it for. Such a great sentiment.

  • I have not tried Hygge knitting.

Candles, comfy socks and blankets, pillows to lean back in while finishing the sweater I’ve been crocheting for my best friend in the lower 48, a cup of tea and the long, dark winter nights are enjoyable. Warm, thick blankets are great for watching the Northern Lights dance in the sky.

  • I have tried in crochet size 15 mm hook and just used multiple strands held together, made a large doily that was 3 ft in diameter, and in knitting it has been as big around as a medium sized banana, I bought some of those giant novelty pencils that come out a few times a year, they are 14 inches long, not as thick as a large banana but a decent sized banana, i glued the plastic tips on over the lead part, then then used sandpaper to make them smooth all over, I used 8 strands of worsted weight rug yarn held together and made myself a floor mat 3ft x 4ft for my patio. It was fun hard on the hands and shoulders, the crochet version was hard on the wrists.I really liked both items.Have never tried the stuff made for these projects though.

Now that she is getting a little older, she curls up right between us and falls asleep. That’s when I pull out my knitting, knowing that I can work on it without her trying to play with it! • I watched Kristy’s video and loved the yarn. I have so been wanting to try it.

  • Looks like it would be a quick project with BIG reward. Thanks for the giveaway

  • It’s in my list of things to try but haven’t managed it yet.

  • No, I haven’t tried yet, but you know I’m going to! Looking forward to picking some up at my local yarn store this weekend, and getting the pillow done as a gift for a friend.

  • Would love to try this! Such a simple yet elegant look.

  • Live this!

  • A great hygge project!!

  • I’d love to make this!

  • I haven’t tried this but I would love to. The larger stitching seems like it might be easier to do as apposed to traditional knitting. Also the larger stitches can be more comfortable to people who have emotional and skin issues. The weight of the yarn can be comforting. Also to some people like me, who have skin dsorders, the smaller stitches can feel hard and abrasive. The larger stitches could feel softer and less abrasive to the skin. Thanks for the give away. This is something I would like to learn more about. I think the book would be an interesting read. Thank you.

  • I haven’t yet but have heard about it and am very intrigued!

  • We have gotten 170 inches of snow this winter, more on the way. I am ALL about coziness and hygge this winter, and am working on a blanket as we speak!

  • I’ve knit up a hat that’s pretty hygge with the biggest faux fur pompom that I could find on top! I’d love to knit up some hygge homewares 🙂

  • Thank you for sharing how much you don’t care.

  • Everything looks so cozy! I can’t wait to knit up that blanket!

  • Looking forward to trying this!

  • I haven’t tried it but it looks like something I’d enjoy!

  • I have not tried anything Hygge although I come from Scandinavian ancestry.

  • Not yet but I’ll try it soon!!!

  • Would love to try it. Never heard of it before.

  • I would love to try this! The blanket looks really cozy.

  • Sounds lovely.

  • We try to incorporate hygge in our house and it makes life a little less chaotic. I haven’t tried any projects with the huge yarn yet but I would love to! I love making bulky scarves and hats. I can’t imagine how nice a giant bulky throw would feel like.

  • I usually think of the person I’m knitting for, and if that person is me, I’m just enjoying how comfy I am. So I guess I’ve tried half of the trend! I’ve never knitted with yarn and needles so BIG. I’d never heard of the word hygge, but since I’ve looked it up I realize this is something I’ve had in my life for a while now. Take a deep breath. Smile. This is it.

  • Hygge is distinctly Danish and represents the simple pleasures in our lives. Warm and cozy come to mind and a hand knit sweater, blanket or pillow illustrated that. Light a candle and cozy up with a huggable pillow and emery the simple pleasures around you.

  • Awesome! Love it!

  • wonderful giveaway good luck to all nice

  • No, I have not yet- but I am totally enamored with the idea of Hygge
