Learn Herringbone Crochet with Make and Do Crew

If you’re looking to try out a cool new crochet stitch, Jess over at Make and Do Crew has a new video that’s a great choice — the herringbone double crochet stitch. She also designed a cowl that uses it, so you can make something nice while you master a new skill.

This stitch is beautiful and adds a unique depth and texture to a garment. You can see it above. It’s also a great example of knit-look crochet, which is a pretty big trend right now. It gives your basic crochet a more modern twist, leaving the wearer of a herringbone dc garment looking trés chic and in style.

Jess walks you through the stitch in her video instructions, so you can get started right away using it! Watch the tutorial over at Make and Do Crew. It uses a skein of Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick®, and we recommended a lighter color so you can see what you’re doing while you learn. Pale blues are a good choice for tutorials, as you can see above. Try Glacier or Mystical.

Put Herringbone to Use

Once you’ve got the hang of the stitch, make The Bixby Cowl, pictured above. It takes one skein of Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick® Bonus Bundle — Jess used the color Oatmeal for the sample, but it would look lovely in any of the colors. Alternately, you could get two skeins of regular Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick® if you prefer one of those colors. You’ll also need an M (9 mm) crochet hook. Three 1.5 inch buttons finish it off, and add a nice extra detail.

This is a fairly quick project that allows you to practice your new stitch skill while ending up with something you’ll love to wear. Winter isn’t over yet, so there’s always need for a toasty cowl.
