Have you heard about Giving Tuesday? Every year, on the Tuesday just after Thanksgiving, we kick of the holiday spirit of gratitude by celebrating #GivingTuesday. Giving Tuesday is an opportunity to offset ‘spending holidays’ like Black Friday and Cyber Monday by giving instead. If you’re thinking about holiday or end-of-the-year donations, then this is the perfect way to join in the fun. This year, we’ll be supporting Project Knitwell, and 10% of the yarn profit from Tuesday, November 27th will go toward their work. For more info about Project Knitwell, and how your yarn purchase will positively impact their work, read on.
If you haven’t encountered Project Knitwell, it’s a beautiful organization to get to know. Project Knitwell was founded almost ten years ago after Carol Caparosa spend time as the mom of a pediatric patient. Her renewed interest in knitting gave her so much peace, she began teaching others. Today, there are sites all over the country that offer programs to help those spending hours in hospitals to learn to knit. Project Knitwell has also participated in studies about the enormous and various benefits of crafting.
Project Knitwell teaches patients and the families of patients to knit, in individual and communal settings. In addition to getting crafters started, there’s a commitment to keeping them crafting. Once folks learn the beginning steps, Project Knitwell donates kits and supplies to keep people crafting, so they can keep experiencing the healthy benefits.
We here at Lion Brand have been believers in their mission for years. We even collaborated with them to publish The Comfort of Knitting in 2015. If you haven’t checked out a copy of this beautiful book, it also makes a lovely gift, especially for a caregiver.
By donating a portion of our yarn sales from #GivingTuesday, we’ll be able to continue to support the work they do to as a leader in therapeutic knitting. You can join in our #GivingTuesday fun by planning to make a yarn purchase on Tuesday, November 27th. This is also a very social campaign, so we encourage you to share about your participation on Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #GivingTuesday. Be sure to tag us, too, so we can celebrate your help in maximizing our gift this year.
