Getting ready to embark on your next, or maybe even first big project? Fall is almost here, and afghans are great projects for the fall and winter months. Afghans make wonderful gifts, they’re extremely useful, and they can also add an element of decor to a room. Take a look at the patterns below for some inspiration.
Crochet
Football season and the new school year just started, check out the Rise and Shine Afghan made in Hometown USA to make an afghan in your favorite team or school colors! | The Gaelic Bay Afghan is crocheted in a combination of natural shades of Fishermen’s Wool, giving it a rustic feel. Crocheted in 100% wool, this afghan is sure to keep you warm during cold days and nights. | The Sampler Throw is a quirky afghan that allows you to experiment with multiple crochet techniques. Each square is crocheted separately then seamed together to form one piece. It’s a great portable project for those who are always on the go! |
Knit
Using a combination of solids in Vanna’s Choice and variegated shades of Amazing, the Radiant Squares Afghan is a bold statement piece that mixes hues of red and magenta, and cool bits of blue. | The Diagonal Stripe Lapghan incorporates the tweed collection of Vanna’s Choice for a woodsy, natural look perfect for the Fall. This lapghan is perfect for a cozy night on the porch, or relaxing on the couch. | Practice multiple different knitting techniques with Patchwork Sampler Throw knit in Vanna’s Choice. This throw allows you to work on cables, lace, and more – as you create each individual square. Think of how accomplished you’ll feel after completing this! |
Have you started working on any afghans yet, or are do you prefer small projects like scarves and hats? We’d love to hear about your WIPS, share with us in the comments!

I prefer small projects but am currently knitting a lapghan for college age GD. I really like the patchwork afgan but REALLY dislike sewing pieces together.

I’m thinking about making a lapghan for this winter …haven’t found that “I want it” pattern yet though.

I have made afghans in miniature versions for our shut-ins in our church with my scrap yarns…quick, fun and useful. These go from waist to top of feet when seated….and from side to side at hip….nothing to get caught in wheelchair or when trying to get up..

I started out making baby blankets and full sized afghans. I find that while I can make socks, sweaters, caps, etc., I’m happiest making afghans. Have recently added lapghans and shawls to my project list.
