Try This Stitch: Petite Popcorn Crochet

Popcorn stitches are often thought of as chunky, and while they do produce a solid fabric, the popcorns can be scaled down for a more refined look. Worked in New Basic yarn as shown, the stitches become even more muted, settling into the halo created by the single ply yarn.

The square piece in the photos was worked to be part of the Try This Stitch Sampler Afghan.


Materials

The following materials are only necessary if you will be using this as a block in the Sampler Afghan. A yarn, hook, and gauge of your choosing will work with this stitch.

Yarn: New Basic 175 in Mango
Hook: J / 6mm
Gauge: Approx. 3 sts per inch
Finished Size: Approximately 10″ x 10″

Petite Popcorns

Chain 32 (or a multiple of 3 plus 2)
Row 1: SC in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in first sc, *in next sc [yo, insert hook into st, yo and draw up a loop] 3 times, yo and draw through all 7 loops on hook (Popcorn made), 1 sc in each of next 2 sc; rep from * across. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across. Turn.
Row 4: Ch 1, *1 sc in next 2 sc, Popcorn in next sc (as in row 2); rep from *, end 1 sc in last sc. Turn.
Row 5: Rep row 3.
Rep rows 2-5 until piece measures 10″ from beginning, or desired length.
