4 Tips for Spring Socks

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Socks are the perfect project for spring and summer. They’re small enough to be portable, so you can work on them everywhere from the subway to the beach. Best of all, you won’t have a lot of yarn resting on your lap, so you can keep cool while crafting! Here are 4 tips for you to get the most out of your spring sock-making experience:

Socks1. Use fun, bright colors! Celebrate the beautiful color palettes of spring by incorporating them into your socks. Sock-Ease shades like Lemon Drop, Cotton Candy, Sour Ball, and Lollipop are perfect for adding a pop of color into your wardrobe.

2. Choose wool. It might sound crazy, but wool socks are great for warmer weather. That’s because wool is a very breathable fiber, and it will actually wick away some of the moisture from your feet.

3. Select the right pattern for your yarn. Solid and semi-solid shades are versatile enough to be used in plain and intricate patterns. Self-striping and variegated colors can obscure more detailed patterns, so it’s best to use them with simpler stitches.

4. Try new techniques! Top-down, toe-up, heels, toes, magic loop — there are so many different ways to make a sock, so challenge yourself to try something new.

  • I love magic loop socks and take a pair to knit everywhere, airports, car trips, lazing in the back yard. In the last three years since I started making socks I must have made two dozen pairs, adult and kid sized, to wear and to gift.

  • I am working on my first pair of socks using the Magic Loop method.   I think I am addicted.   I am going to try to make all the people on my Christmas list a pair of socks for Christmas.   My next lesson is doing the heel, I hope I can get that part down as easily as the cuff part.

    • After my first pair of socks last year made cuff-down, the traditional way, I tried Cat Bordhi’s “Personal Footprints” technique.  Just finished pair #2 – so much easier than turning a heel and doing short rows!  I really recommend it!

      • Where would I fine the Cat Bordhi’s  “Personal Footprints” technipue?  You can send me the information at lindaclasslylady@aol.com

      • Hello Janie ~
I just joined Lion Brand Yarn Newsletter and came across your email. I too knit socks and have never heard of Cat Bordhi’s “Personal Footprints” technique. I knit socks the cuff-down way. Could you tell me where I can find this method – it would be interesting to try.
Thank you for your time on this.
        Sincerely,
        Jan Miller

  • What is the Magic Loop method? Any links would be appreciated. Thanks!

    • Go to You Tube and search for “Magic Loop Sock Instructions.”   Also there is one of the simplest book I’ve ever followed – “How to Knit Socks – Three Methods Made Easy” by Edie Eckman.  The one long circular needle is the Magic Loop method for knitting socks.  Enjoy!

  • I just started my first pair of socks on a 40″ magic loop. I’m knitting two at a time . It was a bit of a challange when I first started but now it’s going fine. Haven’t gotten to the heel yet. Hope this turns out okay. Hate doing two different socks one at a time.
(Second sock syndrome) Where can I find Cat Bordhi’s pattern like above is talking about?

    • Hi, D.  Cat Bordhi’s Personal Footprints is actually a book which you can find online on sites like Amazon.

  • Janie, can you please let me know the Cat Bordhi technique also?  I’m sure many of us would like to know anything that makes knitting easier.  FYI, in addition to the Magic Loop method (instructions available online), I also use the two cable method, since I hate using double pointed needles.  Instructions are also available online.  This method makes it possible to knit even the smallest stitches in the round without seams. I have converted many flat patterns this way, eliminating ugly, fat seams.

    • Hi, Craftygirl.  Cat Bordhi’s Personal Footprints is actually a book which you can find online on sites like Amazon.

  • what is a magic loop?

    • Hi, Bjohnson. The magic loop method utilizes a long circular needle to knit a smaller circumference. There are lots are great YouTube videos demonstrating the technique. I encourage you to take a look at them — it’s my favorite way to knit socks!

  • Has anyone tried Wendy Johnson’s Toe Up method?
