This is Marie from Underground Crafter. I shared a teaser about the Hummingbird Hat and Baby Bird Blanket Knit-a-Long last week.

Hummingbird Hat and Baby Bird Blanket KAL with Underground Crafter, Lion Brand, and Knots of Love

To recap, this KAL includes a hat and a baby blanket in Heartland, one of my favorite Lion Brand yarns. Both patterns are designed for donation to Knots of Love, a nonprofit charity that distributes over 4,000 handmade hats and blankets to people suffering from traumatic hair loss and to infants in neonatal intensive care units every month.

The first KAL pattern, for the Hummingbird Hat, is available here in 12 sizes from 2 lb. preemie through adult large. I thought I’d share my inspiration for this pattern with you.

For the preemie and children’s sizes, I used Heartland in 98 Acadia and 195 Biscayne. These two colors remind me so much of spring in my hometown of New York City. The Acadia is just like the stone used in so many local buildings and the Biscayne is as beautiful as some of my favorite flowers. I even took the 4 lb. preemie size of the hat for a little adventure outside so you can see some of the colors in action.

For the larger sizes, I wanted to use a more subtle, unisex main color, so I paired 149 Great Smokey Mountains with the Biscayne (because who can resist the pop of color!).

When designing the Hummingbird Hat, I wanted to use a stitch pattern that had a lot of stretch to accommodate for partial hair regrowth. I found a stitch pattern that is knit the same way flat and in the round, so you can make the Hummingbird Hat using your favorite method.
