When you’re making a sweater for yourself or someone else, it’s important to take a few things into consideration. You’ll want to make sure to select a shape that suits you (or the recipient), the right size, and you’ll want to make sure that you’ve got gauge. Here are a couple of articles from LionBrand.com and the Lion Brand Notebook that will help you on your way:

Great resource but I’d have to say that the ultimate helpful resource on this topic is Dora Ohenstein’s fairly new book called Custom Crocheted Sweaters.

I usually play with the yarn size and the hook/needle size to get what I’m looking for. Maybe that’s why I prefer ponchos, shawls and vests to full-sleeve sweaters!!

I like sweaters, but the last time I made one, it was a cap sleeve, and made it too short to wear when my body decided to expand to a bigger size. Now I’m of the mind to do something, that will work for me as well as other women who are of my same body and size-type. Thanks for the info.

This is great timing because I actually just started a vest as my first big project. I dont want to deal with sleeves. I’ve been practicing stitches with hats and scarves. So now I want to practice shaping something my size. Next will be using fine yarn for socks. My friends say its tedious so I’m holding off but I do plan to tackle it. Thanks for the tips.
