This simple crochet stitch is used as a block in the Try This Stitch Sampler Afghan. It is easy to memorize and works up quickly. It is a good alternative to single crochet if you’re looking to keep the stitch simple, but add a touch more visual interest.
As you work this stitch make sure you are not unintentionally adding stitches at the beginning or ends of the row. It is advisable to count every few rows. Also, take care to work the base chain rather loosely for this pattern.
The following materials are only necessary if you will be using this as a block in the Sampler Afghan. A yarn, hook, and gauge of your choosing will work with this stitch.
Yarn: New Basic 175 in Grey
Hook: J / 6mm
Gauge: Approx. 3.5 sts per inch
Finished Size: Approximately 10″ x 10″
Chain an odd number of stitches (for the sampler afghan begin with chain 33)
Set Up Row : Work 2 sc in 3rd ch from hook, *sk 1 ch, 2 sc in next ch; rep from * to end.
Row 1: Ch 2, turn. *Sk 1 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * to end.
Row 2: Ch 2, 2 sc in first st, *sk 1 sc, 2 sc in next ch; rep from * to end.
Repeat Rows 1 & 2 as desired (until 10″ in length for sampler afghan).
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
sk = Skip

First the directions say to chain an even number of stitches, then it says to chain 33 (an odd number) for the sampler afghan. Even number or odd number of chains to start?

Thank you for pointing this out! It should be an odd number to begin.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention! The “ch” in row 2 should be “sc”. The instructions have been updated to reflect this.
