A Beret That’s Good Enough to Eat!

A lot of my projects often are related to food because I’m inspired by a concept I like to call “good enough to eat.”  I’ve made berets that look like strawberries and pancakes and recently I crocheted a beret that looks like a “Jammie Dodger,” a jam -filled sandwich cookie.

My husband and I are big fans of Doctor Who. So as we prep for watching the Christmas Special this year, I wanted to make something unique, but still “Doctor Who” related.

When I saw this crochet pattern for Jammie Dodger amigurumi, I was instantly inspired to make a beret.  I used Vanna’s Choice in Toffee and Cranberry because her line is full of natural-looking shades, making it perfect for very realistic, food-related crochet.  Using a basic beret pattern that I memorized, I modified it so that I would have four pieces (top, jam disk, jam stripe, bottom,) that would eventually be all sewn together.  To create the more cookie-like texture you see, I alternated between half double crochet and single crochet stitches; front and back post-stitches were use to create the ridged edge; and for the “heart” I used a really large adjustable ring, sewing a smaller circle underneath in a heart shape.

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite berets because it looks like a normal beret at first glance, and when people realize it resembles a cookie, it’s so much fun.

  • will you share the pattern?

    • Like I had mentioned, I modified a Lion Brand pattern alternating crochet stitches to get a very textured looked. Beyond that I’m afraid I do not have a written pattern because I have memorized this beret pattern. Sorry I cannot be of more help.
