Announcing Our Winter 2011 Knit-Along

Each season we host a knit- or crochet-along, a virtual event in which yarncrafters come together here online to work on one pattern together, share their experiences, and to learn together. You don’t need anything special, and there’s no need to sign up. Simply work on your sweater and check the Lion Brand Notebook at your leisure for new posts with helpful hints and tips (which come out weekly) and share your comments and progress if you’d like!

Last week we asked you to vote for the next project, and your choice was clear: the Saturday Morning Hoodie will be our Winter 2011 Knit-Along project!

Our wonderful KAL host Heather will start with an introductory post next Thursday. In the meantime, you can start thinking about who to make this hoodie for. It comes in a variety of sizes for men and women, so you can make it for anyone in your life. Make it the warm Wool-Ease Chunky recommended, or try something different like our colorful Tweed Stripes or Homespun yarns. You can even make it in cotton-blend Baby’s First for a piece that will transition nicely into spring!

  • Could a beginner knitter work on this? I’ve made scarves successfully, but have never done any cable knit or anything like that.

    • Hi Nienna, if you’re comfortable with increasing and decreasing, reading a pattern, and sewing pieces together, then you should be just fine. If you’re not sure, you can read over the pattern and see if you’re comfortable with the skills or feel comfortable pushing yourselves to try the skills involved. Don’t forget that there are tutorials and skills explanations on LionBrand.com for all the skills in the pattern. Hope that helps!

Then, I remembered: I haven’t had a new sweater/jacket/coat, etc. in YEARS! Time for the ol’ girl to put herself first.     • Hi Brenda, why not try this similar kid’s pattern for your son? It’s in the same yarn and features much of the same styling. Hope that helps!

    Just finished the lace inset cardigan (extending the body and sleeves by an inch or so) and have just started the NYC afghan with Vanna’s Choice. I like this hoodie, but have got a supply of Aran weight wool. I think I’d probably jiggle the gauge, make a larger size on size 5 mm needles. Also, the hoodie looks like it would let cold air in at the front. I’d move the toggles or buttons so it would stay warmer. The poor chap already looks chilly. 😉 It would be nice to see a few more photos, if possible, dear Lion Brand – one from the back and a couple with the hood up.

Loved the pattern, EXCEPT I hate hoods and I’d rather run with the bulls in Spain than do a seam…but, if YOU can adjust the pattern to meet your requirements, then, I guess, so can I! Kids version first, to see if the adjustment I make for k/i/rounds, etc, work out well. If I need help, I’ll just call on Libby and Carol!

  • OK, first dumb question. How do you know how many balls of yarn you need based on the size you select?

    • Hi LauraB, the pattern indicates 8 (9, 10, 11, 12, 13) balls, meaning that each one of those numbers will coordinate with one of the sizes, with the 8 coordinating with the smallest size and going up. This is the same method that patterns use to indicate the number of stitches (or inches or decreases, etc.) that each size will require at any given point.

  • I just downloaded the pattern and I am seriously thinking about making it for my husband. My only concern is that the pattern was not from the top down. It saves so much time and there is little to sew in the end. If I can figure how to complete it that way, I may start the sweater.

  • I did not vote for this one. It seemed sloppy looking and looked like it would be heavy to wear when finished. Also there is a big gap in the front where it doesn’t close properly so chilly spring and fall wind would get in.

    • As far as the gap in the front, all you have to do is sew your buttons farther away from center front so it would close the way you want it to fit.

    • It’s ambitious but a nice big guage so it should go quickly!

  • I just finished this hoodie and have several suggestions. First, it definitely should be a top-down pattern because raglan sleeves in bulky yarn are difficult to sew together well, and all the seams would be eliminated. Second, the hood instructions are baffling; I just knitted 11 inches and used a 3-needle bindoff for the top. I also worked simple buttonholes and used the “knit-in” method for placing shank buttons into the ribbed front binding. Turned out to be very cute.

    • Hi, I thought it was just me that did not understand the hood bind off! Hoping someone can clarify the bind off row on the hood PLEASE. Just finishing the 2nd sleeve,I’m in the UK, not too many good knitting shops near me so waiting for delivery of circular needles.

      • Hi scotwitch, I think Heather’s going to go into detail about the hood when she gets a few weeks into the project, but since you’re making it ahead of schedule, here’s a quick explanation:

        The direction reads “At beg of next row, bind off 3 sts twice, 2 sts twice, 9 (9, 10, 10, 11, 11) sts twice – 17 (17, 20, 22, 22, 24) sts.” It is for several rows in a row, meaning that the first two rows, you’ll bind off 3 stitches each at the beginning of each row. Then at the beginning of each of the next two rows, you’ll bind off 2 stitches each. Then for the next two rows, you’ll bind off 9 (9, 10, 10, 11, 11) at the beginning of each row. At the end of these 6 rows, you’ll have left 17 (17, 20, 22, 22, 24) sts.

I miss that “group knitting” very much. I believe I am going to make this cozy sweater for me and I’m going to see if I have enough yarn in my large stash; otherwise off to the yarn shop I will go!

Since I chose Lion Brand’s Homespun yarn instead of the Wool-Ease Chunky, I guess my first task is to determine the gauge. Good luck to us all as we venture forth on this knit-along!

    • Hi, I’m Roberta and I decided I needed a thicker more substantial fabric so I chose “wool-ease thick n quick” rather than chunky, so i too will be working on gauge as it is a 9 rather than 14 stitch per four inch yarn. I noticed that the yarn called for is being knit at 10 rather than the 14 stitches per four inches listed for the yarn. Too stretchy for my recipient!

  • I’m Wendy from NC and I’ve never done anything this intricate before…well, I DID knit a sweater (for myself) many many years ago when I was learning to knit. And although I still wear it, it DEF has many flaws in it. I would like to try this sweater, not sure for who yet and I’m hoping it won’t be like many of the other projects I’ve started and never finished because they get too complicated. Never done the KAL so I’m looking forward to see how that goes.

I’m recently unemployed so I’m filling a lot of time that I don’t usually have with knitting… To keep me somewhat sane! I see that another reader made button holes and buttons, and this seemed to work fine. If anyone has any other suggestions that would involve a slight modification to this pattern — so that there is no gap in front when the two sides are fastened, I would appreciate hearing from you.

They both claim to be weight class 5, but I would have thought the Wool Ease would be much thicker, and therefore, need fewer skeins.

I’d love to make this hoodie in Wool-Ease, but I have enough Homespun that I bought years ago. This year’s knitting resolution is to reduce the stash. This will be the final project from her wool and nostalgic for me. I hope to make it to fit my son who is far away in the military.

  • Had a heck of a time finding a compatible yarn – JoAnn’s and Michaels were out of Wool-ease. But I’m heading in with Vanna’s so keep your fingers crossed. Should have ordered the yarn from the site!

    • Hi! Im having a hard time with the gauge for this sweater? Ive tried needles from 9-13 cant seem to get right gauge. Am I doing something wrong

      • Hi Bearsandme, if you’re having trouble getting gauge, there are a few options: (a) try a different type of needle; some people find that switching from wood to metal or plastic will change their gauge; (b) be sure to wash and block your swatches, just as you would your finished garment; sometimes, yarn will bloom when washed and blocked, which will effect your final gauge; (c) if all else fails, you can use the math I explain in this blog post to follow the directions of one size with a different gauge than the pattern recommends; just be sure to double-check your math. Hope that helps!

    • Hi Kym, since Vanna’s is a #4 (medium weight) yarn and the Wool-Ease Chunky recommended is a #5 (chunky/bulky weight) yarn, it may be a little light for this project. If you have trouble getting gauge, you may want to consider double-stranding the Vanna’s Choice or pairing it with a thinner yarn to give yourself a little more thickness.

  • Hi, I’m Ann Marie from Kingston, PA and this will be my first KAL. I voted for this sweater and I am hoping to have it turn out to be wearable. All the other sweaters I have tried have ended up getting pulled out and made into something else! I love to knit and crochet but I guess I have a love-hate relationship with sweaters.

  • Hi! I voted for this sweater so I could make it for my husband. Then I get to try it on and see if it fits — and possibly make another for myself! Since Lion Brand doesn’t publish womens patterns in my size (I’m a CYCA 5X — hint, hint!) this is the next best thing. He’s already picked the color, and told me that I have to move the buttons over so he doesn’t have “strings” across his chest. LOL!

  • JoAnn from Missouri. I finished my first “real” garment, a cardigan, for my husband for Christmas. Had a house fire in January – no more cardigan. 8( However, my lovely wooden knitting needles miraculously survived, so although I’m late to join the KAL, I’ll be making this up for my husband!

  • I fell madly in love with this pattern as soon as it was announced, but it took me SO LONG to choose the yarn that I didn’t start on it until about a week ago.
