Announcing Our Winter 2011 Knit-Along

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Each season we host a knit- or crochet-along, a virtual event in which yarncrafters come together here online to work on one pattern together, share their experiences, and to learn together. You don’t need anything special, and there’s no need to sign up. Simply work on your sweater and check the Lion Brand Notebook at your leisure for new posts with helpful hints and tips (which come out weekly) and share your comments and progress if you’d like!

Last week we asked you to vote for the next project, and your choice was clear: the Saturday Morning Hoodie will be our Winter 2011 Knit-Along project!

Our wonderful KAL host Heather will start with an introductory post next Thursday. In the meantime, you can start thinking about who to make this hoodie for. It comes in a variety of sizes for men and women, so you can make it for anyone in your life. Make it the warm Wool-Ease Chunky recommended, or try something different like our colorful Tweed Stripes or Homespun yarns. You can even make it in cotton-blend Baby’s First for a piece that will transition nicely into spring!

If you have a blog, add the badge below to show that you’re participating (Right click or Ctrl+click on Macs to save the image to your computer; then upload it to your blog). You can also join our Ravlery group here and our Flickr group here.

Saturday Morning Hoodie

If so, I think I’ll be in…

  • Washingtonstste here. Am making this one for myself….can’t wait to get started……..

    • that should read…Washington state….lol…..sorry about that

    • hello from a fellow washington stater!!! east side here

  • Could a beginner knitter work on this? I’ve made scarves successfully, but have never done any cable knit or anything like that.

    • Hi Nienna, if you’re comfortable with increasing and decreasing, reading a pattern, and sewing pieces together, then you should be just fine. If you’re not sure, you can read over the pattern and see if you’re comfortable with the skills or feel comfortable pushing yourselves to try the skills involved. Don’t forget that there are tutorials and skills explanations on LionBrand.com for all the skills in the pattern. Hope that helps!

      • Nienna, the other great thing about Knit Alongs is there are other people to ask questions of or to get hints on how to do things. I just did a Crochet Along for an afghan and learned all kinds of things from the other people who were participating. Please join us!

  • Percilla, from eastern Ky, will make this for myself. Can not wait to get started!

  • Hi. Denise from Rancho Cordova California. I am very excited to see this pattern one. It will be my first attempt at a sweater!

  • Hello, I’m Christina from So. California. I was toying w/the idea of making this for my nephew, & then for my hubby, until I read the posts of folks making it for themselves. Then, I remembered: I haven’t had a new sweater/jacket/coat, etc. in YEARS! Time for the ol’ girl to put herself first. THEN, I’ll make one for my nephews, spouse, sister, aunts, etc. Did I mention my family covers about half of Southern Cal?

  • Hi, Brenda from Hamilton ON.
Love this sweater. Just finishing a hoodie for me so will probably make this one for my husband, although I wonder how easy it would be to reduce the size to fit my 4yr old son – he’d look way cute in this 🙂

    • Hi Brenda, why not try this similar kid’s pattern for your son? It’s in the same yarn and features much of the same styling. Hope that helps!

      • Thanks Zontee, that’s perfect! I already have enough of the wool on hand to complete the child’s sweater. My husband is now liking the idea of a “father & son” combo LOL! 🙂

        • I might make a child’s one for a small girl I know. That’s a better idea for me. I already have a sweater for myself and a vest for someone else in my cue.

  • I’m a self taught knitter and have never tried anything like this! But I’m looking forward to it – count me in on the KAL. Elaine from Indiana.

  • I have a list longer than my arm of projects to knit this year. And I NEVER make anything for myself. So, I think this might have to be an item I make for me. Or maybe my sister. Or my Mom. I’m excited though. It is a beautiful hoodie.

  • I am making this for my husband. We live in Ellsworth, KS.

  • Hi… Sue from Kemptville Ontario… I voted for the red sweater, and I was not going to get into yet another project as I have several already on the go, but after I saw the reply to another knitter about a similar child’s pattern, I just might have to get this going for my granddaughter.

  • Hi this is Tina from Richmond, Vermont and i am going to try this for myself first. I’m beginner knitter and so glad this one won, it looks the easiest.

    • Hi Tina, Nice to see someone else from Vermont. I am in Randolph.

  • Howdy from West Texas, I plan to make this for my husband and hopefully surprise him with it for Christmas in December.

  • Hi, Stacia from Alabama. Im going to try to make it for my Dad for his birthday, but if I really like it I may keep it for myself:) Happy Knitting everyone!

    • OOOOOO… neat idea… I might have to consider it for my Dad…

    • OOOOOO… neat idea… I might have to consider it for my Dad…

  • first time trying the knit along. have been knitting for years, but have a hard time joining groups. hope to be able to complete project. ann 76

  • Hi I’m Laura from New Jersey. I love to knit & crochet. I’ve never done a KAL but I want to try this. The sweater looks very warm & comfortable.

  • Don’t know if I’m talented enough to do this as I just learned, but I really would love to try. I’m Jamie from Florida.

  • Taught myself to knit about a year and a half ago. Never have done a KAL. But I voted for this sweater and am anxious to do this. I think I will make it for myself and see how it turns out. Oh, I’m Traci from Iowa.

  • I think in keeping with my 2011 plan to take care of myself I will be making this sweater for me.

  • Hi I am Gina from New York I will be making the sweater for myself. I picked this sweated because it had an easy level. I have never made a sweater before. This will be great to do with other knitters.

  • I’m just about finish with a hoodie I’m making from the Fall interweave collection. Just need to sew it together. But this looks like another comfortable sweater to make. My son has been wanting me to make him something. Maybe I’ll make it for him.

  • I haven’t knitted in years. Have always loved the ease of crochet. Not sure if this is a good project to “start” with, but I’d like to try. I am Pam from Urbana, Maryland.

  • I’m Cindy from Lake Tahoe, NV. I will be making this sweater for myself. I’m always knitting items for other people or for local charities. I want to make something for myself.

  • Hi, I’m Carol from Portugal.
Just finished the lace inset cardigan (extending the body and sleeves by an inch or so) and have just started the NYC afghan with Vanna’s Choice. I like this hoodie, but have got a supply of Aran weight wool. I think I’d probably jiggle the gauge, make a larger size on size 5 mm needles. Also, the hoodie looks like it would let cold air in at the front. I’d move the toggles or buttons so it would stay warmer. The poor chap already looks chilly. 😉 It would be nice to see a few more photos, if possible, dear Lion Brand – one from the back and a couple with the hood up.
    Thanks very much!

    • Hi, Carol:
Libby, here, from Rockford, IL. Concerning the wide gap in front, I’m with you! Maybe a wider band in front to inlay buttonholes? And more views of the hoodie would be swell. Good luck with the KAL!

      • Hi Carol:
Susan here in SC…glad to see your post. Loved the pattern, EXCEPT I hate hoods and I’d rather run with the bulls in Spain than do a seam…but, if YOU can adjust the pattern to meet your requirements, then, I guess, so can I! Kids version first, to see if the adjustment I make for k/i/rounds, etc, work out well. If I need help, I’ll just call on Libby and Carol!

  • Hello everyone…Happy New Year!!! I’m Theresa -from Reading, PA. I will most likely make 4-5 of these in several different colors to give as Christmas gifts -[for guys & gals] this year… I’m glad this was the winner…

  • Hi,I’m Alice from Vermont can’t wait to start this. I’m making it for my daughter.

  • Hi, Laura from Indiana here. Haven’t knitted (is that a word?) in about30 years, but want to get back in to it. Since my husband likes our house COLD (and I don’t) the sweater will be for me. I’m tall with long arms. Think I need to adjust the pattern??? Can’t wait to get started.

  • OK, first dumb question. How do you know how many balls of yarn you need based on the size you select?

    • Hi LauraB, the pattern indicates 8 (9, 10, 11, 12, 13) balls, meaning that each one of those numbers will coordinate with one of the sizes, with the 8 coordinating with the smallest size and going up. This is the same method that patterns use to indicate the number of stitches (or inches or decreases, etc.) that each size will require at any given point.

  • I just downloaded the pattern and I am seriously thinking about making it for my husband. My only concern is that the pattern was not from the top down. It saves so much time and there is little to sew in the end. If I can figure how to complete it that way, I may start the sweater.

  • Excited that it’s a mens pattern. Making the first one for myself and if it turns out – i’ll venture out for a couple other people. Wish it were a sweatshirt type hoodie rather than a sweater type but oh well – I’ll give a knit and pearl from Whidbey Island, WA

  • What a great sweater! I can’t wait to start!

  • I’m Lily-Maie, and this will be my first Lion Brand knitalong, and I’m really looking forward to it, what a great choice! I’ve been looking for a nice sloppy cardigan for myself, so I’ll make it in a nice, bright colour. It’s going to be great to work with you all.

  • I’m making this for my adult son because it recently got really cold here in Milwaukee. He tried one on at Bloomingdales that he liked that was very much like this pattern. I haven’t done a lot of knitting recently because I am busy developing a large youth art program. I use to be a knitting and crochet instructor so it is time I got re-involved.

  • I’m Marilyn from North Augusta, SC and I’ve never done a KAL- but the project looks fun and I’ll make it for myself, probably, maybe in a bright color.

  • I’m Donna from Louisville, KY. I’ve been waiting to try a sweater, this will be fun to knit with a group. I’ll make this one for me-I have a house in Michigan so this will be perfect for the cold.

  • Hey there, I am Jodi and from PA. I have been looking to make a sweater for myself and this is the perfect project. This is my first KAL and I am excited to start. I have gc for Michaels burning a hole in my pocket, this is the perfect project to just the gc for. Looking forward to starting.

  • I’m Laura from SE Michigan and I mostly Crochet but I can’t wait to start this for my DH!!

  • Wish I was more skilled and ready to take on a project like this.

  • Hi, I’m Megan from VA and I think I’m going to try making it for myself first and see how it turns out 😉 (I’m still better at crocheting than knitting) 🙂

  • Hi, I’m Megan from VA and I think I’m going to try making it for myself first and see how it turns out 😉 (I’m still better at crocheting than knitting) 🙂

  • I’m Leann from Alberta, Canada and I’m going to make this for myself. This will be a great cozy camping sweater! I’m better at crochet than knitting so here’s hoping I make it through.

  • I did not vote for this one. It seemed sloppy looking and looked like it would be heavy to wear when finished. Also there is a big gap in the front where it doesn’t close properly so chilly spring and fall wind would get in.

    • As far as the gap in the front, all you have to do is sew your buttons farther away from center front so it would close the way you want it to fit.

  • Hi. Kappu from India. Am planning on making this for my hubby. This would be the first time I’m knitting something for him. Have knitted quite a few pieces for my 5 month old son….maybe I’ll do one for him too :). Unfortunately acquiring the yarn is not so easy. Will tag along once I get my yarn.

  • Hello! I’m Norma5Star from New York and I will be doing this Knit-Along for the first time. I am still learning to knit and crochet and enjoy getting these newsletters. Well, I will also try the recommended yarns for Spring – I’m thinking something in the emerald or moss color.

  • Terri here, from the great lakes state of Michigan. I’m new to knitting and am looking fwd to giving this a try. I’ll be making it for my hubby.

  • From Southern Indiana and looking forward to finishing a wearable project. Maybe a kal will help me. : )

  • I’m Sheila from Ohio, I am very new to knitting. I am going to try to make this for myself. The only knitting I have done is dishclothes and a purse for myself. trying to broaden my horizons.

  • Wow, I will deffinately add this pattern to my “love this pattern, will deffinately do it some day” collection! I may even go out and get the yarn to day to start it??? But then my blanket will be put aside, my quilting will be put aside… ummm, new project?? Yeah I think so!!! lol

    Susanne from Ontario Canada

  • I really like the pattern, does anyone know how long the knit along goes?

  • I already have the yarn to start; I chose the color charcoal. Will be making this for my sweet son-in-law who loves it when I knit a sweater for him. It’s always rewarding when someone appreciates your hard work. :0)

  • I bought my yarn this am. I have a question though. When you start the pattern it tells you how many to cast on…Is that for the men’s size or the women’s size?

  • LaNecia here fron Spokane, WA.I like this!!! I made a resolution to make my first sweater, this is going to be it. I’ll be making it for myself.

  • I’m Lissa from Wisconsin – 53 yrs old and a knitting addict! I am going to make this sweater for ME. I have only made baby and kids sweaters so far…I am looking forward to this KAL

  • I’m Gila, from Jerusalem Israel. I’dlike to make this, but would prefer to use the regular wool-ease (because I have a ton and cannot buy more yarn until I use what I have!). Do you suppose it will work?

  • Hi! This is Holly from Indiana. I love the look of this pattern! I made a sweater last summer but stopped when it came time to pick up the stitches for the edging. Hopefully, I can learn from making this one and get the other one finished, too.

  • Anyone know how to convert a knitting pattern to a crochet pattern?

  • Well, looks like I’ll be making the Midnight Glamour Pullover by myself.

  • Well, looks like I’ll be making the Midnight Glamour Pullover by myself.

  • Well, Patty, I’m with you! I’m not interested in making the chosen sweater but I really like the dressy Midnight Glamour Pullover!

  • Well, Patty, I’m with you! I’m not interested in making the chosen sweater but I really like the dressy Midnight Glamour Pullover!

    • Patty and CP, that’s the one I voted for, too! I like the tapered look and the 3/4-length sleeves.

  • I’m going to try this one – have never tried anything this ambitious before
    Andrea in PA

    • It’s ambitious but a nice big guage so it should go quickly!

  • I just finished this hoodie and have several suggestions. First, it definitely should be a top-down pattern because raglan sleeves in bulky yarn are difficult to sew together well, and all the seams would be eliminated. Second, the hood instructions are baffling; I just knitted 11 inches and used a 3-needle bindoff for the top. I also worked simple buttonholes and used the “knit-in” method for placing shank buttons into the ribbed front binding. Turned out to be very cute.

    • Thank you.

    • Hi, I thought it was just me that did not understand the hood bind off! Hoping someone can clarify the bind off row on the hood PLEASE. Just finishing the 2nd sleeve,I’m in the UK, not too many good knitting shops near me so waiting for delivery of circular needles.

      • Hi scotwitch, I think Heather’s going to go into detail about the hood when she gets a few weeks into the project, but since you’re making it ahead of schedule, here’s a quick explanation:

The direction reads “At beg of next row, bind off 3 sts twice, 2 sts twice, 9 (9, 10, 10, 11, 11) sts twice – 17 (17, 20, 22, 22, 24) sts.” It is for several rows in a row, meaning that the first two rows, you’ll bind off 3 stitches each at the beginning of each row. Then at the beginning of each of the next two rows, you’ll bind off 2 stitches each. Then for the next two rows, you’ll bind off 9 (9, 10, 10, 11, 11) at the beginning of each row. At the end of these 6 rows, you’ll have left 17 (17, 20, 22, 22, 24) sts.

        Hope that helps!

        • Thankyou! I was going to try on a swatch and see if that was what was meant. Hoodie is for me, I havent made myself anything for years but its a cold winter in the UK this year lol.

  • Hi everyone! I’m Yvonne and I now live in Florida. I’m originally from Wisconsin and had a great bunch of knitting friends (both male & female) and we regularly got together to knit. I miss that “group knitting” very much. I believe I am going to make this cozy sweater for me and I’m going to see if I have enough yarn in my large stash; otherwise off to the yarn shop I will go!

  • Hi, I’m Cara in Castle Rock, Colorado. I’ll be knitting two of these sweaters, one for myself and one for my daughter. Since I chose Lion Brand’s Homespun yarn instead of the Wool-Ease Chunky, I guess my first task is to determine the gauge. Good luck to us all as we venture forth on this knit-along!

    • Hi, I’m Roberta and I decided I needed a thicker more substantial fabric so I chose “wool-ease thick n quick” rather than chunky, so i too will be working on gauge as it is a 9 rather than 14 stitch per four inch yarn. I noticed that the yarn called for is being knit at 10 rather than the 14 stitches per four inches listed for the yarn. Too stretchy for my recipient!

  • I’m Wendy from NC and I’ve never done anything this intricate before…well, I DID knit a sweater (for myself) many many years ago when I was learning to knit. And although I still wear it, it DEF has many flaws in it. I would like to try this sweater, not sure for who yet and I’m hoping it won’t be like many of the other projects I’ve started and never finished because they get too complicated. Never done the KAL so I’m looking forward to see how that goes.

  • I’m a long time knitter. Always looking for a new project even though I have several UFO’s. I’m recently unemployed so I’m filling a lot of time that I don’t usually have with knitting… To keep me somewhat sane! I usually don’t knit much for myself (I’m sure my other knitters would understand), but I think this is going to be for me!

  • I’m Linda from Oklahoma. I really love the look of this hoodie and plan to make it for myself first. All four of my kids (all adults now) will probably want one so I’m sure I will keep busy all Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall! I have five grandkids too so the Childs version will have to be made too, I’m sure!

  • I’m Marie from Virginia, have been wanting to make this for my husband for a while. I want the front borders to overlap for a more secure (no drafts) closing, though. I see that another reader made button holes and buttons, and this seemed to work fine. If anyone has any other suggestions that would involve a slight modification to this pattern — so that there is no gap in front when the two sides are fastened, I would appreciate hearing from you.

  • Hi! I’m Mary from Maryland – Ellicott City. I usually make things for the women in the family, but I’m going to try this for my son-in-law. I haven’t knitted for a male since my son (now 34 years old) was six! Wish me luck!

  • Hi I am Fara from Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. I have done a lot of knitting for others it is time I did something for me and this looks like something I would love to wear. I have not done much knitting on sweaters or Hoodie so this is a challenge I am ready for. I will also work towards buttons or some form of over lapping as well as I do not like the open front.

  • hi everyone, Sara from washington state here. i decided on LB jiffy in the denim color and i am making this for myself. i am so excited to get started!

  • Millie in Wisconsin, and I am going to try this for myself. If I make it in homespun instead (so I can wear it more often without getting too hot!), do I need the same number of skeins? They both claim to be weight class 5, but I would have thought the Wool Ease would be much thicker, and therefore, need fewer skeins.

  • Can’t wait to get started. Been looking ofr a project to do for myself. I’ve never done a knit along through lion brand, so do we register with lionbrand, how do we find out what the supplies are we need?

    • The supply list is included with the pattern. There’s a link at the top of the page for the pattern.

  • I’m in. I’m Chris from Illinois and I like hoods on my jackets/coats/sweaters to keep the cool wind off my head. I’d love to make this hoodie in Wool-Ease, but I have enough Homespun that I bought years ago. This year’s knitting resolution is to reduce the stash. I’m probably making if for myself, I’ll see how it turns out.

  • Hi I am Christine from Vermont. I have never done a KAL and am excited to try it. I am using the Wool Ease Chunky Yarn in Indigo. This will make a nice transition piece from winter to spring.

  • Hi I’m Vickie from N. California. I’ve never participated in a KAL before. This should be fun. I’m making this for my niece’s husband.

  • Roxie from Illinois. I have never done a Knit Along before and look forward to making a sweater for myself, also a new thing to do! I am going to be making mine out of LB Homespun in the #315 Tudor color. I love the pastels and plan on this being more for early spring, late fall use.

    • Homespun is one of my favorites – the stores were out of that as well.

  • hi I’m Sara from Baltimore and I am planning to knit this with some chunky brown wool made from the fleece of our old ewe Blackberry who died at the old age of 16 years. This will be the final project from her wool and nostalgic for me. I hope to make it to fit my son who is far away in the military.

    • Sara I think this is an awesome idea and what a great way to remember Blackberry.
Please tell your son I said “Thank You” for his service in the military. A special “Thank You” goes out to you and the rest of the members of your family that keep the ‘home fires buring’ while you wait for his safe return to your family.

  • Had a heck of a time finding a compatible yarn – JoAnn’s and Michaels were out of Wool-ease. But I’m heading in with Vanna’s so keep your fingers crossed. Should have ordered the yarn from the site!

    • Hi! Im having a hard time with the gauge for this sweater? Ive tried needles from 9-13 cant seem to get right gauge. Am I doing something wrong

      • Hi Bearsandme, if you’re having trouble getting gauge, there are a few options: (a) try a different type of needle; some people find that switching from wood to metal or plastic will change their gauge; (b) be sure to wash and block your swatches, just as you would your finished garment; sometimes, yarn will bloom when washed and blocked, which will effect your final gauge; (c) if all else fails, you can use the math I explain in this blog post to follow the directions of one size with a different gauge than the pattern recommends; just be sure to double-check your math. Hope that helps!

        • Hi Zontee : I appreciate your helpful ideas I will try Thankyou!

    • Hi Kym, since Vanna’s is a #4 (medium weight) yarn and the Wool-Ease Chunky recommended is a #5 (chunky/bulky weight) yarn, it may be a little light for this project. If you have trouble getting gauge, you may want to consider double-stranding the Vanna’s Choice or pairing it with a thinner yarn to give yourself a little more thickness.

  • Hi, I’m Ann Marie from Kingston, PA and this will be my first KAL. I voted for this sweater and I am hoping to have it turn out to be wearable. All the other sweaters I have tried have ended up getting pulled out and made into something else! I love to knit and crochet but I guess I have a love-hate relationship with sweaters.

  • Hi! I voted for this sweater so I could make it for my husband. Then I get to try it on and see if it fits — and possibly make another for myself! Since Lion Brand doesn’t publish womens patterns in my size (I’m a CYCA 5X — hint, hint!) this is the next best thing. He’s already picked the color, and told me that I have to move the buttons over so he doesn’t have “strings” across his chest. LOL!

  • Hi. I’m Happy an ambitious advanced beginner. I’ve been knitting for about a year now. I’m excited!

  • Hi, my name is Umoza and I am looking forward to my first KAL. I live in San Diego and it has been getting mighty cold here lately so this will definitely work!

  • Hi, I’m Kathy from Arizona. Yes it gets cold enough here for a bulky, warm sweater. I’m knitting it for myself. Hard to choose a color tho.

  • Hi – I’m Jo from Ohio. Excited to join the KAL, and try my first sweater! Also looking forward to weekly Lion Brand Notebook.

  • JoAnn from Missouri. I finished my first “real” garment, a cardigan, for my husband for Christmas. Had a house fire in January – no more cardigan. 8( However, my lovely wooden knitting needles miraculously survived, so although I’m late to join the KAL, I’ll be making this up for my husband!

  • Always been a late bloomer so I’m starting as soon as I get my yarn (tomorrow!)

  • I’m getting in really late – it’s Feb 22nd – can I still join?

    • Absolutely! To see Heather’s blog posts about the knit-along so far, just click on “knit-along” under the “Categories” heading in the right-hand bar of the blog.

  • I fell madly in love with this pattern as soon as it was announced, but it took me SO LONG to choose the yarn that I didn’t start on it until about a week ago. I have finished the back and started on the left front. I’m very excited about doing this – it’s my first KAL! I’m Lori from southern Indiana/Louisville area and glad to be in the group!
