It’s hard to believe that I’m near the “finishing line” of this Cable Luxe Tunic! Actually, I still have one sleeve to finish–and I will try it on my daughter before I finish the sleeves. The yoke was very fun to do, and I realized that at the end that I could have done this yoke in the round on the 24″ circular needle. If you decide to do that, just remember that you have to knit one round and purl one round to get the garter stitch. Also, if you work in the round with garter stitch, you will still get a “jog” (or a line) at the beginning of the round when you switch between the knit rounds and the purl rounds. Here is what the back of my yoke looked like when I finished:
I bound off on the wrong side of my yoke to create the purl ridge at the top of yoke – which is very pretty. If you do this in the round, then you may want to bind off purlwise at the top. It really took very little time to sew the back yoke seam because sewing up garter stitch is basically sewing under each ridge from both sides.
There is a great tutorial of this sewing technique in the Lion Brand Learning Center. Now here is the yoke seam all finished!
OK, now the only sewing left to do is the side seams, but make sure you sew the underarm seams first that was shown in my fourth post. The sleeve and side seams are just reverse stockinette stitch. Again, I am sewing them with the right side facing, and I simply sew into each purl “bump” at the sides.
I found my edges curled quite a bit, so I spritzed them with a spray bottle and let them dry. This eased those edges to make the edges easier to sew. So now I just have to finish that last sleeve, get the right sleeve measurements, and weave in those ends! Thanks to all of you (especially Connie) who have been answering questions and keeping this KAL very fun! I better get my camera charged to take a picture of my finished Cable Luxe Tunic–and maybe have it modeled as well!

Question for Heather…based on my gauge swatch I’m using a #7 needle for the yoke and body. In stitching the top of the yoke I’m supposed to use a smaller needle. The pattern calls for a needle two sizes smaller than that used for the body. Should I then use a #5, or would the #6 be acceptable? Without a gauge indicator for the smaller needle, I’m a bit confused. Thanks for your help!
Heather says: “Hi, Ann – The pattern calls for a needle only 1 size smaller for the yoke than the needle you used for the rest of the tunic. So if you used a size 7 for the body, then just use a size 6 for the yoke.”

I took a break from this to finish all the Christmas knitting, but have been doing the cabled yoke at night while I watch Sex and the City, and can’t believe how the pattern is clicking in my head and I don’t really have to refer back very often for the cable pattern. I thought it would be so tedious, but it’s really going quite quickly…so fun!

I’ll probably be sewing my sweater together sometime this weekend. Quick question: you mentioned in your post that for your curled edges you just spritz them with water and let them dry, do you have to pin them after you spritz them or not? My edges are kind of curled too.

I HAVE ENJOYED THIS KAL. IT WAS MY FIRST. I AM NOT QUITE AS FAR ALONG AS YOU, BUT AM GOING WELL. I WAS TO FAR ALONG TO RIP EVERYTHING WHEN I DISCOVERED THE CORRECTIONS WITH THE 3/3LC AND 3/3 RC ON THE BACK AND FRONT. I CONTINUED WITH THE 8 ROW CABLE AS ALL 3/3LC AND IT LOOKS GREAT. I ALSO TRIED SOMTTHING DIFFERENT THAT MAY BE TOO LATE FOR MOST; HOWEVER I DON’T LIKE THE BALK OF THE CABLE PATTERNS UNDER MY ARMS, SO I DID ALL MY REPAEATS UNDER THE ARM AS STOCKINETTE STICHES. IT LAYS BEAUTIFULLY AND IS VERY SMOOTH UNDER THE ARM. THIS WAS AGREAT AND CHALLENGING PATTERN, AND LOTS OF FUN. THANKS AND I LOOK FORWARD TO THE NEXT KAL.

I have just finished sewing together the yoke and all the seams and I put it on and I just LOVE it. I mostly machine knit and have in the past 3 years started to hand knit more. Thanks for all the tips. I eagerly read them all and hoped to be able to keep up with everyone. I can’t wait to wear this one to work.

Well everyone, I finished my tunic this afternoon, and after all the little “hiccups” I’m so happy with it, it fits and looks great. Help- I am very behind on this my first KAL and I had never done cables so first I praticed cables on a throw. So I finished the yoke cable and started the back. I did the foundation row and row 1 and 2.I am stuck on the instructions for shape armhole. When it says to work in established pattern does that mean I use directions for each row in the cable pattern?

Hi Marie,
Yes, you have that right. So now, you should just continue with each row in the cable pattern.
Therefore, since you’ve done the foundation row and row 1 and 2, you’ll now do row 3 of the 3/3 cable and row 3 of the 4/4 cable, etc. etc. I would keep track on a piece of paper as you go, that way you don’t get confused as to what row you’re on. Don’t forget to do the needed increases on the RS rows (so now you’ll increase at each end on row 3) until you get your required number of stitches. I really hope this helps…good luck!

I’m working on the first sleeve, size medium, and on Row 1 there is k2 between the middle 2 slipped stitches. Based on the pictures and the back/front pattern, I would expect that to be p2. Am I right or am I missing something? (it’s the same in all the sizes except for 1X. By the way, I’m having a great time. Before I finished the back, I decided to do the yoke so I’d have a better idea of whether I needed to adjust body and sleeve lengths.

I have two questions on modifying the pattern. I think I may want to make mine a turtleneck. After the last decrease on the yoke (94 stitches, large size), should I just make the neck longer, or do I need to decrease more stitches before I do that? Also, in one of the early posts, someone mentioned making this pattern as a cardigan. How would I modify the pattern for that? I’m thinking I would eliminate the 12 stitch cable in the front and make it two separate pieces, with the opening where the cable pattern would be. Am I on track, or are there other issues I should address? Thanks for the help!

I started this tunic in charcoal gray Woolease on 12-30 and finished it this weekend. It’s GORGEOUS! Since then I have completed the yoke on the second sweater in Woolease avocado. My only problem is having enough family members to make this for. It’s one of the most beautiful sweaters I have ever made in 50 years of knitting!! Love It!
