Crochet Your Own Very Hungry Caterpillar

When I heard a friend of mine had crocheted her own version of the “Tickle Monster” for her daughter,
I immediately thought of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

It was one of my favorite books growing up. I would read it over and over, gobbling all the words just like the Caterpillar eating all food.  As result, I’ve become a voracious reader.

I’ve also become a voracious crocheter.

When I saw this pattern by Twinkie Chan (I’d recommend using Amazing® yarn in Rainforest for a gradient look), I was immediately taken back to my childhood and my favorite book. Make one yourself, along with everything the Very Hungry Caterpillar ate, and pick out items as you read the book together with the children in your life.

For those unsure how much he actually ate:

Although he ate so much … remember he did eventually turned into a beautiful butterfly.  Are there any books that have inspired you to knit or crochet the main character?

  • This book is a real favourite of mine and it was a mainstay of bedtime stories for a long time. Once I was away with my daughter overnight with friends, she asked for a story before bed and I realised I had not packed a book and my then childless friends owned nothing suitable. I told the Hungry Caterpillar from memory and looked up at the “Beautiful Butterfly” bit to see 7 pairs of eyes (all adult) watching me with rapt attention. I think Eric Carle and I gave something to their future children that evening!

    • That’s an amazing story. I’m very impressed that you knew that story by heart. Thanks for sharing!

  • I am rather a newbie at crochet and I love amigurumi. I am a big Splat the Cat fan and made one a couple of months ago and am now working on Pete and his White Shoes for our local library. It is so wonderful to see the kids eyes light up when you can accompany the story with a cuddly character.
