Fifty Fifty: Why Try This Yarn?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

It’s always so hard to stay quiet when we know a new yarn is coming and we have to keep it a secret! Over here in the office we’ve been eagerly awaiting the moment we could share this particular new yarn with you and now is the time! Fifty Fifty is a super bulky single ply blend of 50% wool and 50% alpaca. With other options for similar looking yarn out there, why try this yarn?

Superior Softness in A Super Bulky Yarn

What we’re most excited about is the feel of Fifty Fifty. It’s soft!

We’re aware there’s quite a few super bulky single spun yarns out there on the market these days. While most of these yarns are straight wool or wool and acrylic, we have paired 50% wool with 50% alpaca to create our own spin on a super bulky single. After having worked with a few readily available options we think Fifty Fifty brings in top marks on fiber and feel.

The bottom two yarn strands in this photo are LB® Collection Fifty Fifty. The wine red strand on top is another brand that is 100% wool. If you look closely you can see the difference in the halo that surrounds the yarn. The top strand has more of a surrounding fuzz, while the Fifty Fifty strands have the distinct long halo of alpaca fiber.

Luxury + Speed

Fifty Fifty yarn is part of Lion Brand’s LB® Collection*.

Within the LB® Collection yarn lines you will see lots of natural fibers like you do here in Fifty Fifty. We are excited to pair this luxury fiber blend with the speed of a CYC 6 Super Bulky yarn.

*LB® Collection yarns are only available directly through Lion Brand. Either online (LionBrand.com) or in the LBY Studio in Manhattan or the Outlet in Carlstadt, NJ.

  • I am willing to give all new Lion yarns a try – but why bring out a super warm yarn at the very end of the winter season? We are anxious to begin our DIY projects with colorful threads that remind us of warmer days now – with all the beautiful shades that the warmer weather brings along.

  • About the 50/50 wool and alpaca, does the alpaca fel as well as wool? Would it felt as tight as wool does? Thank you, Elaine

    • Hi Elaine! I’m not an experienced felter, so maybe another reader can jump in and answer. However, a full animal fiber yarn like this will still felt. The scales on alpaca fibers are smaller than wool, so the process may take a little longer.

  • Thanks for your help, Erica! I think I will give this yarn a try. I think it will be easier on my hands than straight wool. Elaine

  • A little bit expensive? $21.95 à ball, can not aford more than 1 or 2…… Otherwise, tempting ……

  • Would love to see a shade of green. Perhaps a hunter green or an olive green? Or a shade somewhere in the middle!

  • Yes, the Fifty Fifty is a little on the high end of price, but it is so worth it. With two skeins you can crochet some finger-less gloves, a 6 to 8 month beanie, etc. This yarn is sooo soft and will be so easy to knit or crochet with. Can’t wait to place my order. LB is one of my favorite yarns to work with.
