Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Perhaps you’re new to the yarniverse (welcome!). Or maybe you’ve always crocheted, but are interested in picking up some needles. If you’re casting on for the first time, we’re so glad you chose to get started knitting with Lion Brand! With these 3 videos, you’ll be knitting in no time. Scroll down to learn a cast-on for beginners, how to do the knit stitch, and lastly, how to bind off once you’re finished. These are the basics to get you started, and you’ll be mastering more skills soon.

Cast On

Casting on is the beginning of every knit project, so naturally, we’ll start there! Casting on creates new stitches. So when you’re starting a new project, you’ll ‘cast on’ the number of stitches you need for the beginning of your pattern. While there are several techniques for casting on, we’ve made a video featuring one of the easiest, so you can get stitching.

What we love about this video is that you get to watch the action several times in a row slowly, in case you want to knit along. If you need to continue to knit along with us, you can always hit the ‘replay’ button!

How to Do the Knit Stitch

The simplest and most important stitch for knitting is… You guessed it, the knit stitch! This stitch is the foundation for knitted fabrics, so it’s the best one to learn first.

At 1:05, you’ll see the direction to ‘Turn like the page of a book.’ This is where you’ll have completed your first row! In fact, if you were to continue row after row the same way, you’d be doing the Garter Stitch. Many patterns are mostly garter stitch, so you’ll find there are already things you can make!

Bind Off

Once you’ve reached the end of your project, it’s time to bind off. Binding off (sometimes also referred to as ‘casting’ off) is the technique for finishing a piece of knitting, literally binding it off of your needles! There are many techniques, but this one is the most common, so we’ll start here.

And that’s it!
