Getting to Know New Basic 175

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

New Basic 175 is a single spun worsted weight (CYC#4/Medium) yarn. Skeins are 3.5 ounces (100 grams) and have 175 yards, which puts the yarn on the heavier side of worsted. It is light and lofty while being warm and cozy. And since it is machine washable you can work it up into the softest of garments.

Working with New Basic

New Basic 175 works up equally well in knit and crochet stitches. Because it is a single ply don’t expect clear stitch definition. Part of the beauty of items in this yarn is the soft halo that surrounds the piece. This softens the look of any stitch work. While that does not mean you should avoid cables (or similarly complex stitches) it does mean you will want to make sure expectation and reality align.

Below you can see a few swatches worked in New Basic. The two photos on the left are crocheted while the two on the right are knit.

Pattern Inspiration

If you need some ideas for your soon-to-be new favorite yarn you can find kits and patterns on LionBrand.com. There are some perfect pieces for layering to bring you through the Fall like the Jules cardigan (below left) or Aleric hood (below right).

New Basic isn’t just for wearables, though. Decorate your home in comfort and style with patterns like the Vibrant Color Afghan and Magnolia Bobble Pillow (below right).
