The film Julie and Julia has inspired one knitter to take her own challenge: knit and blog about all 48 projects from Nicky Epstein’s Knitting on Top of the World. Beginning in January, Mary will knit one garment per month in the order that they appear in the book. She’ll be tracking her progress on her blog. Until then, Mary is preparing by purchasing yarn and supplies, making gauge swatches, and choosing the perfect color combination. It’s an enormous and inspiring task. Best of luck, Mary!

WOW, thanks so much for mentioning me and my (somewhat deranged) new project here!
Coincidentally, I just received some of the new LB Collection Superwash Merino Yarn in the mail, in a perfect soft blue called “Sky”. I’m going to use it as a substitute for the yarn in the Second project in the book, the Copenhagen Shawl.
And, what is even better, I purchased enough yarn to make two shawls, figuring I could hold a giveaway on my blog for some lucky reader who would like to knit along with me on that particular project!
I’m also really looking forward to knitting (and wearing!) the Celtic Hooded Coat, a cably, twisty masterpiece that is knitted in Lion Brand Wool-Ease Chunky. In that gauge, it should go quickly, and it will be a much-beloved and much-worn garment, since I live in the frozen tundra of Minnesota!
Thank you for your great yarns, and the increasing variety of type, fiber content, and sophisticated colorways you’re choosing. (I’m hoping you’ll open a Lion Brand Studio out here in Minnesota at the Mall of America, like the one you have in NYC, someday soon!)

What an undertaking, Mary! Cooking every day is one thing, but knitting a project every month is quite another. I do hope your fingers can hold up for a year. At the end, I, along with others I’m sure, will be curious as to how many hours you spent knitting and what the total cost of the yarn was for the entire year. Looking forward to seeing your creations…knit on!
