  • hello to all and a very very Happy New Year;
    I am rather new at crocheting and i only know the basics like single, double and half and i am proud to know those and i am looking for a very very easy double crochet pattern for a blanket to make for a man and the man is about 5’8″ tall and i found one but it calls for a P or a N hook none of which i either have so my question to anyone here is may i use a g or an h hook or does anyone else have a similiar pattern to this that would require a g hook – i like using the g hook. please respond back at kitty7734@msn.com and again, i don’t know what my website is and my email is kitty7734@msn.com and thanks.

  • You certainly can use a different hook size, just remember you’ll have to make more stitches and rows to get the same finished measurements. Also a smaller hook will just take a little longer and have tighter stitches. I use those hooks to make lots of afghans and they are very warm because of the density. Remember you can use a pattern as a starting point and change it to make it your own. Happy crocheting!

  • Welcome to a great hobby and lifestyle. Oh yes…crocheting will become a lifestyle! As Cyndy said, you can change hooks if you watch your gauge and keep in mind that the finished project will look a bit different. I always use patterns as an idea tool and then change them up to suit my wants or designs. You might want to try the larger hooks soon as they are very useful when using thicker yarns and large projects. Good luck and happy hooking!

  • Hi Linda! Welcome to the wonderful craft of crocheting!! Just as Deanna and Cindy said, you can use whatever size you like. I would suggest making a few small squares using different sizes to see what you like! It’s really what you prefer. I don’t always follow the directions and my favorite is the J hook. It’s just kind of in the middle of the road. You can’t go wrong with single and double crochets! Whatever you decide to do, it becomes your own beautiful creation. Bigger hooks make bigger stitches and in my opinion, helps get the project done a little faster! I hope this helps and have fun!!!
