Phoenix Wrap Crochet-a-Long

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

I’m Marie from Underground Crafter and I’m here to kick off the Phoenix Wrap Crochet-a-Long in the versatile and soft Lion Brand Jeans!

Why the “Phoenix Wrap”?

I designed this pattern in support of one of my favorite charities that accepts handmade donations, Sue Rock Originals Everyone, Inc. This is a local New York City organization that transforms new and upcycled textiles into new, handmade clothing and accessories for survivors of domestic violence. Handmade gifts are made with love, and clothing and accessories help to rebuild the wardrobes of domestic violence survivors.

I was inspired by the phoenix, a mythical bird that is reborn from the ashes, to create a shawl that could be a wardrobe staple, something that could be worn in a variety of ways all year round. I chose Lion Brand Jeans because it’s super soft, easy to care for in the washing machine, and because of its versatile, denim look.

You can make your Phoenix Wrap for yourself, to gift, to donate to Sue Rock Originals Everyone, Inc. or locally, or to sell.

About Sue Rock Originals Everyone, Inc.

Sue Rock Originals Everyone, Inc. was founded in 2005. In addition to providing crochet, knitting, and sewing classes for children, teens, and domestic violence survivors, Sue Rock Originals Everyone also coordinates the distribution of handmade garments and wardrobe staples for women living in domestic violence shelters.

Founder Sue Rock has previously been named the New Yorker of the Week by NY1. Watch the video below to find out more!

About the Phoenix Shawl Crochet-a-Long

I’ve designed a textured and cozy rectangular wrap in 3 colors of Lion Brand Jeans with Sue Rock Originals Everyone, Inc. in mind. This pattern is simple enough for a dedicated beginner but versatile enough that more advanced crocheters will want to join in. The Phoenix Wrap will be released in 3 parts to give you time to work on it.

  • Part 1 will be available on Wednesday, August 8.
  • Part 2 will be available on Wednesday, August 15.
  • Part 3 will be available on Wednesday, August 22.
  • Join in by crocheting the shawl. You can make your version to donate to Sue Rock Originals Everyone, Inc. or a local charity, to gift, to sell, or to keep.
  • Share your progress on social media. Tag your project with #lionbrand and #undergroundcrafter. (If you plan to donate yours, tag #suerockoriginals, too!) You can also tag me as @UndergroundCrafter on Facebook, MarieInNYC on Ravelry, or @ucrafter on Instagram or Twitter.
  • If you’d like to chat with other crocheters, join the Underground Crafters Facebook group or visit this thread in the Underground Crafter Ravelry group.
  • Share your completed project pictures here by 11:59 p.m. Eastern on August 31, 2018 for your chance to win great prizes, including yarn, crochet books, a project bag, and more!
  • At the end of the CAL, you’ll have a beautiful wrap to donate, gift, sell, or keep.

Materials for the Phoenix Wrap

The Phoenix Wrap is a rectangular shawl crocheted in 3 sections.

To make this pattern, you will need:

  • Lion Brand Jeans – 3 skeins in each of 3 colors.
    • For my version, I used 150 Vintage, 108 Brand New, and 153 Stovepipe, pictured above. You can use any 3 colors of Jeans or Jeans Colors to get a look that you’ll love.
  • US Size J-10/6 mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge. (Once you have your yarn, visit here to get the pattern for a gauge swatch.)
  • Yarn needle.

  • Looks like a fun new project. I already have the yarn and the hooks. Just waiting for it to begin.☺

  • I have my yarn and am ready to go. I chose jumpsuit (red), stovepipe (black) and khaki for my combo.

  • I have worked for 45 minutes to try and download the Phoenix pattern. I have been led thru a Chrome download and a revelry.com site to no avail. I still can’t get the pattern. What do I do?

  • Sunday K. Bollman, it confused me too but I found it. Click on this link: https://undergroundcrafter.com/blog/2018/08/08/crochet-pattern-phoenix-wrap-part-1-center-panel/
