Today we’re featuring a show-stopping oversize topper! This versatile layer is more coat-like than your average cardigan, with lovely drape. It feels lighter than it looks, as the yarns used are quite lofty. Check out the knitted Simple Top, available as a kit in our Fall/Winter Style Guide.
The Simple Top combines two of our favorite yarns: Scarfie and Shawl in a Ball. If you’ve never combined yarns before, this design is a great place to start! Just hold the two yarns together, treating them as if they are one, throughout the entire piece. It’s super simple to do, with stunning results.
The natural mélange effect created by combining yarns looks really rich. Plus, it breaks up the striping sequence of the yarns in a distinctive way. In fact, no two garments will be exactly the same, because you’re holding two self-striping yarns together. As crafters, we love how this makes each piece truly unique!
The top’s color palette matches just about everything! Scarfie’s off-white and black ombré blends with Shawl in a Ball’s grey, charcoal, and white ombré for a sophisticated, striking look. We imagine this as a piece you could make over and over again in different color combinations after you start with this neutral classic.
The top’s construction allows for stripes to be worked in different directions on the collar versus the body of the cardigan. We love the visual interest this creates in the combination of horizontal and vertical striping. To achieve this, the collar is worked first. Stitches for the fronts are then picked up along the edge of the collar. The back is worked separately, then sewn to the collar/front piece.
The cardigan’s simple stitches are perfect for relaxing into your knitting, like while you catch up on your favorite TV show. The collar is worked in garter stitch. The fronts and back are worked side to side in reverse stockinette stitch with garter stitch borders.
