Join Lion Brand and 49 designers and bloggers from seven different countries as we embark on the 2020 “My Life in Yarn” campaign with the Traveling Afghans project! Starting in January, the Traveling Afghans will set sail from NYC and journey to a new designer every two weeks. Each designer will create a 10″x10″ square to add to the blanket before sending it off to the next person to add theirs. They will each publish their pattern for free online so YOU can follow along with us and create your own knit or crochet afghan! This year-long collaborative effort will feature stories from the designers about their paths as makers, and will give you the opportunity to learn new stitches and make new friends in the community along the way.
1. Purchase a yarn kit now for either the knit or crochet Traveling Afghan so you have everything you need to get started with us when the first square pattern is released in January.
2. Visit the landing page for the project, hosted by Alexandra Tavel from Two of Wands, for the master list of all designers and links to their sites as well as the itinerary for the afghans so you can have a peek at the route they will be taking as they travel around the world: www.twoofwands.com/travelingafghans
3. Follow the designers on social media to get updates on their pattern releases and learn about their maker journeys. There may even be some giveaways to enter!
4. Host a CAL or KAL with your local maker friends! Get together throughout the year in person or online to add your squares. We would love to see YOUR life in yarn too, so make sure to tag Lion Brand Yarn in your posts and use the hashtags #thetravelingafghans #lionbrandyarn and #mylifeinyarn and either #thetravelingknitafghan or #thetravelingcrochetafghan

Nope! You can use your own yarn. Just follow along on the page from Two of Wands. She will be adding links to each pattern piece as it is released.
I’.m so excited about this journey. I am a longtime knitter……..60 years and have an outrages stash of all kinds of yarn. These days I mostly knit for charity, but would love this for my home. Thank you so much for this opportunity.
Happily knitting in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota, aka Up in the Woods 😉
Do you have to purchase the kit to participate in this project?
No! You can follow along on the main page (from Two of Wands) and find links to each pattern piece as it’s posted.

I have found no information about the correct needle and hook sizes.
Needle and hook sizes may vary between squares. Each designer will provide that information when posting their portion of the pattern.
I am a Knitter and Crocheter for 65 years. I love and have made many Sampler Afghans both in Knit and Crochet. My favorites are Cables Sampler Afghan by Barbra Walker all made in One Piece ( not squares or Panels) and the Latest being Mandala Madness Afghan in the round by Helen Shrimpton. with Lion Brand MANDALA Yarn Cakes. I have a wall full of Lion Brand MANDALA Yarn in all colorways.
