What To Do When Someone You Know Needs Comfort

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Sometimes there is nothing you can actually do when someone you care about is going through a difficult time.  Perhaps a friend is grieving the loss of a loved one. Or, maybe you know someone who is suffering from a serious illness. As much as we’d like to, it isn’t always possible to do much. But there is value to letting that person know that she is cared for and supported.

That’s why so many people who knit or crochet have discovered how helpful it is to use their skills to create a physical sign of caring in the form of a comfort shawl.  A person who receives a handmade gift understands this. A shawl is like a warm hug.

And, there’s an extra benefit to giving something of yourself away. Why? Because it’s difficult to feel poor or deprived when you are giving. People who knit and crochet shawls to comfort others say that they feel better as well.

So, when there isn’t anything you can do to make things better for someone in need, there is something you can knit or crochet to offer comfort beyond words.

Here are a few patterns to inspire you when you want to knit or crochet a comfort shawl:

  • I have a young cousin who just lost his wife, Any masculine type ideas? Thank you.

    • Blankets and afghans are a great option for men or even women who aren’t into shawls. Sweaters and vests also work well.

On a similar note, I’ve found that stuffed toys and blankies are great for children needing a little comfort and support.

    • Perhaps a wide scarf in masculine colors with a hidden pocket for a photo or keepsake? Hope this helps.

  • These are certainly something to do but knitting any garment would do the same, wouldn’t it?

  • I’ve made pillows for men……maybe add a simple pocket and then they can put something special in it from their dec. spouse?

  • Does anyone have a specific prayer or saying to include with the shawl, especially if you don’t know the recipient personally?

  • I make pocket or mini prayer shawls. They look like a book mark and are easy to mail. I had a prayer card with a charm attached. Something for people to know others are praying for them and something tiny they can take with them anywhere. I got one in a card after I was in a bad accident and had to have several operations. It gave great comfort so now I make them for two churches and a support group. Also great for the left over yarn from bigger projects. I prefer soft yarn, so it’s easier for a person to hold. I have a friend he keeps in the car with him for all his travels. Even made them for a wedding shower for all the guests to pray for the couple.
