While I was on vacation last week, I went to a lecture on health and wellness. During the lecture I noticed a woman crocheting in the audience, and I instantly felt right at home. Her name was Elaine (pictured right), and I couldn’t wait to ask her all about her project. When I asked, I was extremely happy to find out that she was crocheting preemie hats for a local charity. Charity yarncrafting has always been near and dear to my heart and I truly appreciate all of those who donate their time and energies to such worthy causes.
Elaine even shared a little fun fact with me: Did you know that while crocheting hats for babies, a preemie hat should be the size of an orange and a full sized baby hat should be the size of a grapefruit?
It really is amazing that you never know when you might learn something new about crafts you thought you knew well!

Several years ago, I was asked by an auntie if I could crochet a hat to fit a size Jumbo egg, which would fit her Preemie nephew. Fingering yarn, but I cannot recall the size of the hook.
So many tidbits I’ve learned… too many years have come and gone since I picked up my first crochet hook. When in the audience for a talk such as you are writing about, I tend to be one whom folks gather ’round during Intermission, and become the teacher.

Thank you for the orange and grapefruit sizes to crocheting the premie and baby hats. Now I know if my hat will fit.

I never knew a preemie hat should be the size of an orange! My twin girls were premature and in the NICU for almost 3 weeks. Sometimes I look at photos of them in the NICU and can’t believe they were ever that small. While they were there I was given two crocheted blankets and I still have them. Honestly, I’ll never part with them because I thought it was so kind of someone to take time to crochet them for my little girls. Since then, I’ve done a lot of charity knitting/crocheting because I want to let other mom’s of preemies feel the way I did; that someone cared. It’s so stressful when your baby/ies are in the NICU. I know I felt very lonely during that time. When my daughters grow up I will give them their crocheted blankets to use with their children. Charity knitting/crocheting is a very rewarding thing for both the maker and receiver. 🙂

I’ve taken care of a lot of babies and I’ve measured heads on a normal newborn anywhere from 11 inches to 14 inches. That bottom band needs to be stretchy. If it is tight it may not be usuable. But I can tell you that moms and nurses love seeing the hats and the nurses will pick the prettiest first.
