Soft Thick Knitting Crochet Yarn Cotton

“What’s going on with the Studio?” …is the question we’ve been reading in e-mails, blogs, and message boards. The short answer is a LOT! First I wanted to introduce myself to you and say how much I’m looking forward to knitting and crocheting with you all. My name is Patty and I’m the new Studio Manager. I’m thrilled and honored to be part of this amazing new project.

The Lion Brand Yarn Studio will be a place to showcase the Lion Brand spirit of inspiration, education, innovation and contemporary design for yarn crafters.  The Studio will offer classes, workshops, special events, fashion shows, knitting circles, movie nights, book signings and more–if it’s fun and yarn-related, we want to do it!

Our grand opening will be November 18, 2008.  Look for details in our newsletter.

So, here’s where you come in. Tell us what you’d like to do and see in the studio. What are some of your ideas for fun knitting events? Post a comment. We want to hear from you.

On a personal note, as a knitter, being part of Lion Brand family is like coming full circle for me. My mother taught me how to knit when I was a kid, but I never got past a scarf. I really became passionate about it 7 years ago, and I haven’t gone one day without knitting since. My first sweater was a Lion Brand free pattern, the Hooded Knitted Sweater. I knit it out of Homespun. It was the perfect beginner pattern, but I was NOT the perfect beginner knitter. I didn’t understand gauge, and I was a crazy tight knitter, so it turned out to be a perfect sweater for my (then) 12 year-old niece.

Ah well, we all keep learning and improving, and that’s what the Lion Brand Yarn Studio is all about!

  • Yay! I’m looking forward to visiting the studio when it opens.

I would really like to see demonstrations of the knitting machine that Lion Brand offers. I’ve never tried one and it would be very helpful to me to see one in action.

I also hope that the design studio will have all the yarns in every color. I like to make my yarn purchases locally, especially for yarns that I’ve never tried before, so that I can see and feel the yarn. Sometimes the only thing that stands between me and a project is not being able to plan out the colors all at once, or see and feel one of the harder to find yarns.

  • Interesting idea. I might like to visit, too. But where is it?

    Online?
    New York?
    Somewhere on the East Coast?

Note: I’m in California so online is the only way I can visit.

  • I’m SOOO excited about the knitting machines. We will be having machine knitting classes, so people will get a chance to learn how they work before buying.

We will have physical samples of EVERY yarn in EVERY color Lion Brand carries. The yarns that aren’t sold in the studio (we would need a MUCH bigger location to be able to sell them all), can be ordered right from the Studio to be delivered to your house.

  • The Studio will be in New York (Lion Brand’s home). See related post “Breaking Ground on the Lion Brand Yarn Studio in New York City”

  • I cannot wait…if it goes well, would you consider additional studios? Philadelphia would be nice 😉

  • I am so excited about the opening of the studio! I work 2 blocks away and will probably spend most of my lunch hours there. Hope you have classes between 12-2PM, Knit classes, crochet classes anything involving yarn would be great.
I have been to the store 2 x since I heard it was opening in the Fall. Thanks for the update regarding the opening date.

I’ll probably be there everyday rolling around in some soft Homespun!!!
    I am sooooooooooooo happy! Thanks

  • We are going to have daytime classes on Sunday and some weekday evening classes. You could pop by after work and hang out with us! Stay tuned for more info after the new year on other fun evening plans. I’ll look for you in the pile of Homespun 🙂

  • I don’t live in New York, but an idea would be to have yarn tastings. I’m excited for you all.

  • I hope you will have samples of ALL the Lion Brand
yarns in ALL COLORS at all times – it is very difficult to plan a project without being able to see and feel the yarn

  • Patty,
Thanks for a peak into the new LBY Yarn Studio and as I read on the date of the opening….gosh I wish it were sooner….patience is a virture as they say….I am so looking forward to your yarns, books classes and book signings and I hope Vanna White will be there. Here is my story…I started crocheting many years ago….my Mom is a great knitter but even with her excellent expertise I could never get it right…even trying to make my first scarf all those years ago…..although I did at one time decide to make an angora sweather that turned out larger than planned and turned into a vest for an aunt. My next project at the time was to knit a baby sweater for a friend,s new born and again my Mom worked with me but being as determined as I am I tried….until a friend at work….we had began a craft circle at lunch….it turned out to be only the two of us….I had to go and purchase lunch and when I returned I found my baby sweater on the table in a heap of yarn….she had taken it apart and said she was going to teach me how to crochet and she did and over the years I have made so many wonderful things…as for the knitting I have done a few small projects again with my Mom’s great expertise…..PLEASE PLEASE TELL US ALL WHERE THE LBY SHOP WILL BE IN NYC.

  • Patty,

Here is an idea that I have….when the store is open and if it is done by invitation from your online newsletter subscribers…..why not ask those that will attend the opening to bring a completed crochet or knit square….pattern of their choice and then have it put together and as you will imagine this could turn out to be more than one afghan and then donate it.
Now I wait to know where the new LBY store will be and I am marking my calendar for NOV. 18th OPENING.

  • The Studio is on 15th street between 5th & 6th Ave right in the heart of Union Square. We’ll get you knitting in no time (and you can help me improve my crochet skills!). We will be having beginning knitting classes, and beyond beginner knitting classes. We’ll have free demos & free knitting help so you won’t be abandoned after taking a class. Can’t wait to meet you and see your crochet!

  • I wish I could come to New York and visit!
Lionbrand should do something BIG for the grand opening! Something like The World’s Biggest Afghan made with donated squares that could be later separated into regular afghans for Warm Up America.
